When you're mixing a song with several rhythmic and melodic elements it can be difficult to keep the vocal sounding thick.
Layers, of guitars, keys, drums, bass and synth elements really take up a lot of room in the mix and they can easily over shadow the vocal.
Fortunately, I have a tried and true technique for thickening the vocals, and I have asked my friend Chris Selim of Mixdownline to recreate it for us using cubase.

Hi Friends, I hope you're doing marvellously well! Many of you have emailed me asking about Cubase! It's a DAW that's been around for many years, one of the first and best ever MIDI softwares it rapidly has become a wonderful DAW for audio editing and mixing as well! Here our friend Chris Selim demonstrates how to achieve the Vocal thickening trick in Cubase that so many people love to us! Thanks ever so much for watching! Many thanks Warren
thanks warren and chris !! cubase rules !!
Amazingly simple explanation!
Thanks Darlene! Yes Chris is marvellous!
Thanks IWant! Ha Chris rules!
Could you do a similar thing with strings and get a more realistic live effect?
Kudos for acknowledging other UA-cam tutors that did similar work using other DAWs. That's a pro move :)
Sir, superb technique..keep it up the good work. God bless you.
I am recording an a capella song and just stumbled across your video as I was having trouble with the warmth of my lead vocals. That trick really worked - thank you very much :)
I've literally never messed around with those settings, and wondered what they were for.... all the while doing this manually and chopping and adjusting like one of Dave Pensado's videos lol. OMG... You just saved me tens our hours of my life back. haha. Thank you so much for this.
gosh! i am a cubase user that i learned from my dad and uncle from before cubase sx. so i did not recognise this delay section, what it is really done. thanks alot. it is amazing!

Good vid, clearly explained
I learned so many new things from this video haha. Have you ever thought of doing something similar to an electric guitar to thicken it?
great vid indeed!!!
Thank You So Much It Works Great And Love The Video.
Thanks ever so much! I’m so glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Nice one Chris
Amazing trick! Can't wait to test it myself!
Thanks ever so much my friend!!
Very cool. I was especially pleased with how subtly it thickens the line. I definitely see a lot of use for using this on choruses and other “big” parts of a track. Thanks so much for sharing.
On a side note, it took me by surprise to hear her singing in French at first. I thought I was losing my head. Haha. Lovely voice though.
i love you ...thank you for this video
Thanks for the video. I will be using this technique, gratefully, but with a heavy heart, for it definitely makes the vocal sound more "produced", which is what we assume people want, in the same way that many producers seem to assume that people want autotuned vocals, but it sounds in your case (as eg at 7:22 when it's dry) like you have a beautiful vocal that stands on its own two feet. When you add that effect, it adds a sheen, but it loses something.
Great video!
I use a slightly different approach. I double my vocals (sing them twice) and add these thickening only the doubled recording, plus whispertrack and doubler.
But I actually wanted to say: Great and extremely well explained tutorial, really great.
Holy shit thanks a million, just used this trick on a session and damn it sounds way better now. Thanks!
That is a super cool...and super easy trick....and....it sounds damn good!!! Thanks for the tip.
It's just a cool trick, Chris!
Very nice ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
very nice
I'm a long time Cubase user - since 2003 (and a recent PLAP member). Came here after watching Warren's thickening video and wanted to see what would be different in the Cubase video. Man, I learned a couple of Cubase features I never had looked into. Double Bonus! Thanks!
Fantastic! Wonderful to hear Stefan! Great to be able to help! Special thanks to Chris!
That's so cool Stefen, happy the video was helful :-)
Had to play with the pitch a bit. But when you can get them in to retake their harmonies this works a treat, 😭♥️
I make DNB up front dance music, this technique will surly go down a treat in my upcoming productions!
Right On ..... Nice ....Thank You
Chris rules!! Thanks ever so much!
Chris! Amazing!!! Thank you! I finally got it :)
You're welcome brother!
Yes, agreed! Chris Rocks!
Dude that’s dope! I use Adobe audition but im sure the same principles apply!
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
I’m a Cubase user. I make electronic music. I’ll sure be giving this technique a go. Great video 🤘🏻
Thanks Tom! Have a marvellous time with this technique!
Thanks Tom, Enjoy!
Just use cloner or chorus effect, why suffer yours 🤔
cool to see Chris Selim on this channel! Followed his channel since he started and it is cool to see how quick he is growing!
Thanks Chris! Yes, Chris Selim is a great guy! I met him through Lij Shaw, another wonderful mentor to many!
Thanks Chris! Happy you came to watch me on this channel :-) Warren Rocks!
Aw shucks thanks Chris! You Rock! Let's do more!
Great explanation of how to do this effect manually. I must point out, however, that there is in fact a plugin preset in cubase that does almost the same effect. If you open the "cloner" plugin, which is stock with cubase, there is a preset called "4 voices" and it is essentially the same thing, pitch shifting and delaying multiple copies of the track in stereo. The great thing is you can set it up as an effect and send to it just like a reverb or delay.
Hi SignalsMusic yes, there are great plugins that do similar things! This really depends on what kind of controllability you want! I love having printed effects! Obviously not everyone does! Have a marvellous time thickening vocals! Many thanks Warren
Thanks for pointing that out. You can definitely use Cloner or other plugins. My intention in this vid is to work this technique without the use of any plugins. Which gives me a bit more control overall. Like Warren, I like to print my effects when I can. Thanks for your input on this, much appreciated :-)
What control do you have over it that cloner lacks?
I'm a Cubase user and make House/EDM. Tried Ableton and Reason and way prefer Cubase. Thanks for the great videos.
Similar principle that Eddie Van Halen did with his guitar rig in the 90s he used 3 cabs, the two outside cabs were wet , the center was dry. The left outside cab was pitched a few cents up, and the right one a few cents down, and the center one was dry, he used an eventide H3000 rack harmonizer for this
Hi Eric O'Reilly marvellous comment! I actually create this is my hardware H3000 on my mixes!! P.S Eddie rules!!
Great video Chris!
Yes, marvellous work Chris!
Thanks :-)
Cool, thank you :)
Thanks ever so much
You did it like a pro...sweet trick
Thanks ever so much!
Thanks I will try this,, would of been nice to have seen the effects you added tho,,,
Good one!
Hi JulianFernandez thanks ever so much! Marvellous
Thank you, my friend!
Thanks Chris. Good trick ;)
You're welcome... and I'm gonna say Thanks Warren ;-)
Thanks Fabien and thanks Chris for the great video! Marvellous having you on board!!
I have seen a tutorial simmilar to this technique. The difference was, the offset of the thickening tracks was always negative, so they played sooner than the main lead vocal. Then they used a delay plugin on each of these tracks with only wet signal and delay time modulated by LFOs (I believe these were S&H synced to the song tempo). These eight track were shifted in time by a variable ammount and were shifting constantly, so the final effect was like there were 8 diferent takes on the vocals.
damn that's nice!
thanks'
Wow. That did't sound like a choir at all. I thought it id going to. It still feels like one lead vocal. That is so cool.
Wow. I've never thought about thickening vocals like that. Not sure if it also would apply to metal vocals. But i'm going to try ;)
nic .. tanx fore you
Wow thanks a lot for sharing this ... So useful! My request, I want to improve my voice compression , have some advice on how to EQ the voice and know how to deal with its space in the mix, can you help me please,
Hi love this trick just tried it on a couple of songs I’m working on. Thanks
Just wondering if you can use same trick for accustom guitar maybe with 4 tracks?
Thanks
Adam
Thank you David Cross!
Hi Matt Smith haha really? Not sure, but I’d take it! Haha
They're twins! media.gq.com/photos/59e78fa7855d3303830d1557/3:2/w_560/david-cross-apology.jpg
But seriously, I did enjoy the video. Would love to see more Cubase focused stuff as that's my platform of choice.
Lol!
Haha grey beard? I better not grow one or I might look like him too! Haha Happy to be able to showcase Cubase! We here at PLAP are about showcasing every DAW and bringing people together! No one platform is giving us any money so we are blessed to give real information and beholden to any Advertisers! Have a marvellous time in Cubase! Many thanks Warren
LOL... I actually have a bit more hair though, I'll remove my cap next time Lol...Happy you enjoyed the vid brother. Cubase is a great DAW :-)
Good day Chris the stuff you do is great but can you do it with stock lug-in's on cubase 5
I died when he said 'we're gonna apply the same Logic in Cubase' ...get it?!
you must be off your fruity loops to have a decent reason for that, bet your in a garageband! fucking audacity lad
hehe
Thanks for this video . This technique should be applied to raw vocal track or mixed vocal track ?
cubase is the best
Hey Chris. Great vid.... big thank you as always. I'm wondering though is it normal to have a slight phasing after you've went through this process? In my case I copied this exactly and while it sounds thicker for sure the vocal group sounds like there is a slight phaser fx on it? Is this normal or do I need to tweak something?
I use cubase for rock and metal. didnt have alot of luck with pro tools on a pc it would stop working in the middle of a session not saying pro tools sucks. Haven't tried pro tools in years. Hell I'm still using cubase 7 lol thanks for video
Lol... as far as you have something that works, that's all that counts :-)
Agreed Matthew! Whatever DAW works for you is the one to use!!
Wow man, it really sounds so much better and you don't hear that it are multiple voices. Thanks for sharing this. B.t.w. what is the name of the singer and the song?
Hi
Chris this is all good, can you do all this in cubase 5 Pleas.
Great video! I have a question: Why do you use several copies of this vocal to create a thickening effect instead of using an onboard Cubase Pitch/Doubler Plugin like Cloner that offers 4 voices with individual fine tune and delay? Is the soundquality maybe better than those plugins?
Dope! and Lit!
How did you arrive at the MIX VOX track...??? Whre the new submix/groups(Doubler) was sent to...
Hi Chris,
Are there differences in the doubling/widening characteristics using the technique shows here on this video and the technique were with 4 doubling channels using CB Cloner Plugin?
Thanks for your great videos!
Amram
I think theres a VST for this called Doubler made by Waves :)
I would love to see this done in Logic Pro X without any third-party plug-ins. Great video nonetheless! 👍
It looks like you are using Cubase Pro. I am anxious to try this technique, but I have Elements 10.5 and don't get an option to "Global Transpose" anywhere that I can see. Does Elements have this capability, and if so where should I look to find the transposition control? Thanks for this tutorial, you have an excellent way of explaining things.
Great stuff Chris and thanks man..I have a question please.Whenever i create a new stereo audio track to record my vocal i cannot get a balance between the left and right, after recording the vocal and looking at the wave, the right side is much larger than the left and the audio gets one sided..Can you please tell me how to configure a stereo audio track properly please? Thank you sir.
Reply
What shortcut was used to copy the original vocal track to the others while staying in perfect sync with each other on the timeline?
Hi my name is Nirmal F Robinson and recently I purchased Cubase pro 10 and want to know that when I record Vocal which plugins I can use only cubase pro 10 not external plugins.
cool trick man, is this something that should be use through the whole track or is it a just chorus thing, how do people use it?
Hey Chris Thanks for the previous response to my problem( hope that u remember)PLEASE HELP ME OUT once again , I m using UR22 mk II audio interface and the CUBASE AI 9.5, also the headphones and the condensed mic that come in the recording package . I m a beginner in music programming. MY problem is related with Audio recording. After I complete the drums and synths programming , when I try to record the vocal track I see that the whole other tracks get mixed with the vocal track automatically as if I have done the Audio MIXDOWN. This happens even when my headphones and speakers volume lowered to zero but does not occur when I record vocal in solo mode . I have set two individual MONO tracks in the input bus and one stereo track in the output. Please let me know if its a configuration problems?????
So...we only have to add microtonal harmony? Dope!
Thank you Chris and Warren for this great Video. I have a question though. I've done this before but it sounds weird. I hear it on your vide as well. The vocal stack sounds artificial. English is not my first language so I am probably missing the correct terminology here. Kinda like robotic. Is it just me or is it suppose to sound like that. Could it be phase issues? When you slightly delay each track? Thank you!
il y a des Français qui écoutent. Some of us are bilingual😊. My voice was recorded on Audacity. On the Cubase 11 pro of the composer, it lacks energy and sounds muffled though the same mic was used. Will this trick help make my voice come out more is what I’m wondering… Subbed and 👍🏼 🦂😊❤️🌊
how do i fine-tune in cubase 5?
hmm, ive done things similiar to this, when i layer bunch of synths. Usually it gets very loud when i stack the layers. I usually just tone both tracks down in the mixer (Probably not the best way to do it) How does it not get extremely loud when you stack the same track together 4 times per pan? Do you have preset this in your template or is there something im missing?
Furthermore, would you recommend spreading the pan on the different tracks equally or should you always keep it 100% L/R
Amazing bro..but this trick also use in cubase 5?
7 month's and no answer....
Wonderful, thanks Warren and Chris! Hey Chris, you actually use that Presonus M80 pre for much? I've had one for years, but due to having a good selection of pres, I mostly only use the M80 for extra stuff on drums like bottom snare mic, far room mic, etc.
Thanks for the great comment! Chris, can you take this one? I hear great things about Pre Sonus, but don't have that much experience with them! Have a marvellous time recording!
I mainly use it when recording drums for Over Heads, bottom sn, Room etc...My main preamps are the Vintech 473 which I like a lot. Thanks for watching!
MixdownOnline haha same! I actually use the IDSS knob as an eq! Roll it up past 50% on your rooms to tame the top end a bunch while adding some saturation at the same time. Win!
Diesel Dungeon Studio Dude, I do the exact same thing Lol!
MixdownOnline haha Awesome!
