You know you need to burnish your brakes if you see pitting or rust on the rotors. When in the cooldown period, you do not want to come to a complete stop or hold the brake down. You want to keep moving, that helps cool the brake pads and rotors down. You can warp your rotors during this process by holding the brake while stopped with hot brake pads. I do recommend burnishing your brakes every few months if you are a user that does not use brakes and use regenerative braking. Otherwise, at least once a week, brake somewhat hard when out driving. Then you will not need to go through this process.
