Grit and Grain: The Story of Bourbon County Stout
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 лис 2015
- To the employees of Goose Island, Bourbon County Stout has always been more than liquid in a bottle. We’ve always known that, but to what extent we had no idea. A lot has changed at Goose Island since the first batch of Bourbon County Stout was brewed and barreled in 1992. As time marched on, the folklore surrounding Bourbon County Stout became as rich and layered as the beer itself. Fact starts to blend with myth, and myth takes away from the process.
That’s why a group of Goose Island employees set out to uncover the full story of Bourbon County Stout. What we found was a story larger than we had ever realized. A story that uncovers a large cast of characters, crosses state lines, and spans generations. From the loggers that down the American White Oak used to make bourbon barrel staves, to the distillers that fill and age bourbon on those staves. This is Grit & Grain. This is what it really takes to get Bourbon County Brand Stout into your hands.
This video series influenced me to start a UA-cam channel. I'm thankful for the people at Goose Island who made us a part of the story.
How on earth can this only have 3k views. So well done! Two thumbs up!
Just saw it after the black friday release haha
Tim Dotterweich You posted the link to this video in a goose island bourbon county beer review thread. Thank you for sharing this great content!
I watch this every year in November around when I have my first BCS of the year gearing up for Black Friday. My own holiday tradition
Probably one of the coolest things I have ever seen.
Thanks, friend! Cheers!
I'm going to attempt my version of this lovely beer in the following weeks! Figured I could age it in a Balcones barrel!
I just got a bottle, got home and put it ice, by the time this is halfway done, I’ll be sipping and 💨 like a king, know dat🚛💨🔥
3 sips and 2 bong rips later on lit😂😂, this is really really strong “beer” if that’s what you want to call it. It’s ,more like a bourbon/beer mixed with slightly sweet and a velvet finish. Be careful if you’re a beginner like me. This with a good strain of medicinal is fuego🚛💨🔥
Bought a '22 case last year and a '23 now on Black Friday at Costco. It is so rich that your palate, tongue and gums are impregnated with flavors that stand out. An amazing sipping beer in a snifter glass. I plan on storing several of these bottles and let them age. It'll be even smoother and more complex.
great video about the original bourbon barrel aged stout
Great video. Great music
Hey guys! I'm a brewer from Brazil and I have written and synced portuguese subtitles for this video. I've sent it for approval and I'd be very glad if you guys accepted it! Cheers
I thought this was an amazing video. I loved how it hit on so many different angles, from the original batch #1000, history and info about bourbon, the amazing craft of coopers, the forests and mills in Missouri where American White Oak is harvested and aged, the mind blowing Goose Island barrel warehouse, what all goes into the different variants of BCBS, and the truly unbelievable story of the 35 year old Heaven Hill barrels, not to mention Pappy 23 year old barrels. As of March 24th 2016 this video has only 4,862 views and 3 of them were me. How is that even possible? No matter your opinion of Goose Island or BCBS, or their recent corporate purchase, this is a top notch documentary style video about a legendary beer, and one that could never have been produced without having the resources a parent company like InBev can provide. Kudos.
What a fantastic doco. Well produced, well finished, well rounded. Sounds like a good bourbon or stout!
This is a very well done video. My friends and family will have to watch this before I share any BCS with them...
+wakez89 To drink Bourbon County Stout, is to know Bourbon County Stout. Cheers!
Love this beer so much. So great getting to experience the creation. Well done!
This was 48 minutes well spent. Thank you and cheers!
just got my Boubon County 16 today ready to crack open as I'm watching 😏
Watching this and sipping on a 2019 BCBS. Life ain’t so bad.
Watching this for the first time sipping on some lovely 2020 BCBS #4 Stout and I totally agree.
@@elborrachosobrio9979 I haven’t tried that one yet, but I have tried the base stout and caramella so far. Loved both. Did you enjoy the #4?
@@rongriffith625 how was the caramella ? Just picked up both of those today
@@ThatGuy-sc5rx Its amazing. It’s like a liquid apple pie. EDIT: I’ve also tried the #4 now. It was friggin’ delicious, too. Also tried the Kentucky fog and hated it.
Yes sir it was awesome, I actually bought a couple more bottles to have on standby 😎. I do look forward to trying the rest of their Bourbon County lineup.🍻
Have 2 bottles of 2018 BCS in my fridge now, give me a couple hours and I'll be drinking one.
That was a fantastic documentary, very well produced and extremely informative and entertaining 👏
Good shit !
You guys should classify this under documentary, too! Not just entertainment. This is extraordinary! I like history
"I like Beer!🍻"🎶
Thus us beautiful. And reusing these barrells, i get this feeling these barrells are characters in this story...just like the employee! Very important!
The logging and sawmill part made my heart ache.( in a great way!)
This is what was here when I was very small. Honest men working hard.
Now we have a big town.
I miss trees and twangs.
Thanks for some really interesting points and views into Burbon and 🍺 Beer!
Here's to a long life of brewing and doing!🍻
What an amazing video.
+Steve Licht Thanks, Steve!
What a great video, and an amazing beer. The first time I had this was at Top Hops in New York 2016. It was the 2013 vintage and took me over an hour to drink. It blew my mind. Massive flavour and smoothness. Makes your taste buds do cartwheels.
I'm trying to get my hands on some Bourbon County in Oklahoma! Cheers!!
Shame its not being supplied to the UK market now...I've just acquired 11 bottles of the Goose island 2021 Bourbon country stout today. May the 10th, 2024. Its beautiful stuff, at 14.4% abv its the perfect imperial stout.
I've probably drunk more imperial stout than most folk, and goose island's is/was perfection. I've already drank 12 bottles of this beer over the last 2 years, since it arrived here, but its now almost impossible to source or find in the UK as of May 2024 its all but sold out.
There are of course many other great imperial stouts, but Goose Island, Bourbon County Brand Stout, always stands out, for its consistent high quality, body, bouquet and full flavour. No idea why they stopped shipping it here..I heard it was some political/internal issues with the beer giant InBev (who acquired goose island just over 10 years ago), calling the shots.
Shame if this is so, this beer has been discontinued here since 2021 in the UK and is a smack in the face of all who supported and purchased it.
It saddens me that so many great independent breweries (ie the CEO's and owners) eventually sell out to the beer giants like Inbev, to make a handful of staff/owners super rich! These super beer giants then proceed to destroy the very brand they originally bought, by withdrawing sales, no doubt to help push or promote other more profitable beers in the UK! Shame on goose island for selling out and shame on inBev for treating us Brits like this!
Got my first bottle of this recently... Looking forward to cracking into it soon!
Everyone is an ABInbev hater until Black Friday comes along. Lol.
Great little doc. Loved it. I am still waiting to try a bottle of it... Been waiting too long. Curses for living in BC, Canada. Who was the band playing at the last little bit while you were all cheering???
33:42 dream goals right there.
Bravo. Just Bravo. And thanks to Greg Hall for stealing the show. Cheers!
great video, any info on the music? liked a lot of the transition music.
seems a lot of the music is from the black oil brothers. great music!
It's all from Black Oil Brothers. Great Chicago band!
Cool video
Did the directors/editors of Chef's Table make this episode? Damn. So many similarities and very well done.
Nope. The whole Grit & Grain series was done in house by Goose Island folks. Glad you enjoyed it, David!
Got me and my brother a pair of 2018 (15.2 abv) bottles.
Can’t wait to pour it down the ol’ hatch 2 nights from now as I watch the Islanders move up 2-1 in their series against Bruins right here on the Island.
Cheers!

I would like to be able to subtitle this video so that people in my country can know the history of this amazing beer. Would that be possible?
I get up at 4 am every Black Friday every year to get me hands on BCBS
You all should do a beer that is finished for a year in islay scotch casks!
It's the only time will do rare until we do it again. such a shame
I have watched this video 10 times. My only issue is where can I get some??!! Maybe I am looking in the wrong place? I googled "where to buy Bourbon County Stout" and not much comes up. There IS one site does have a list of stores, but I can't believe that the nearest is over two hours away! I am only 45 minutes from Albany, New York. Man I need some help :( Great video!!

So was this supposed to be helpful? Yeah, I saw that part. Thanks.
+iamfugazi1969 it's released once a year on Black Friday and gets bought up pretty quick, it's also generally not on shelves. You have to ask for it
ok thanks
If you are able to get to Clinton Gourmet Market on 10th Ave (NYC)...as of today, they still have some bcbs in stock. My buddy was visiting and brought me some back to the UK.
Hopefully no QC issues this year. Drank my Barleywine after the refund window had ended, and drank both BCBS before you issued the most recent refunds for those. The BW was definitely off, but only the 2nd BCBS was starting to turn
They actually pasteurize it now to avoid those issues. Last years batch was plentiful and NO infected bottles. Cheers
There's no listing for the band that is playing throught here, unless I missed it? Anyone know who the band is?
Hey friend - If you check out the credits, you'll see that all music was written and performed by The Black Oil Brothers. Cheers!
Sorry..I was looking in the description and should have let the credits run. Thanks and cheers right back!! :D
28:12 "Sanitary tanker"
Were they to blame for the infection this past year?
+Jeeto "...theory is that the lactobacillus lurked in the tanks used to transport the beer from the brewery's barrel-aging warehouse to its Fulton Market bottling facility."

www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20160715/BLOGS09/160719858/goose-island-recalls-two-more-stouts
yeah, thought so. Either in the tanker trucks or the hoses/pumps used to get it in and out of the tankers
How do you down vote this?
Absolutely fantastic video, sublime beer, but terrible music. De gustibus I guess.
