Baylans fighting style is so incredibly unique, to me it looks like he has mastered the ability to very slowly let out the dark side during a fight, as if he can increase the power withdrawn from it on command, without getting consumed by it. I'll try to explain: 1:09 Baylan looks cautious and nervous, but clear of mind, he is fighting Ahsoka with his past Jedi training and knowledge. His next few strikes and dodges are direct, powerful and according to the book, but can't seem to catch Ahsoka off guard. 1:34 Baylan realizes he needs to do something to get the upper hand and you can see the exact moment when he decides to "fuel himself up", the music gets going, his entire style suddenly changes as if he is fighting with natural instinct. You can see how his fighting style is still very Jedi-like, but you can also see how he has given his own twist to it over the years. He still looks slightly nervous, but not cautious anymore. 2:28 Ahsoka lands some kicks and gets Baylan down on the ground, he realizes again that his previous efforts were not enough and lets even more of the dark side in him. 2:45 Baylan stands back up and comes for Ahsoka again, when he enters the frame, his entire stance looks menacing, he stopped being cautious and is now also not nervous anymore, the confidence he has in that walk towards Ahsoka is terrifying, this is close to peak Baylan. 3:10 When he sees Ahsoka throw Shin against the rock, he is absolutely done with her, he knows he has to end the fight now. He gets Ahsoka down on the ground in 2 strikes, and when Ahsoka blocks the 3rd she even has to use the force to help. At this point he has basically won the fight, and upon realizing Sabine doesn't want to destroy the map, he takes his chance. now go back to the first timestamp, 1:09, tell me that isn't a completely different Baylan standing there. I love Baylan, and Ray Stevenson executed him flawlessly, may he rest in peace.
The reason for the heavy strikes and over powering of her with his blade has been explained that he and Shin lightsabers crystals are unique in the sense where they give weight to the light saber blade. Which is also why they are orange and have that unique sound upon activation. Traditionally - which you probably already know - the only thing of any weight when wielding a lightsaber is the hilt. The blade itself has no weight. But Balons and Shins do. I thought this bit of lore was pretty awesome. Shin and Baylon were two new great additions to the Star Wars universe.
@@BlkBoyAwesome I've only heard that they wanted Baylan to fight like a medieval knight wielding a longsword as opposed to Ahsoka's more dexterous kendo style of fighting, for choreography's sake. Was the actual weight and the origin of these orange lightsabers officially confirmed? I quite like the idea of lightsabers that are actually heavier to wield.
@@Urizen777 From Screen rant: According to the sourcebook, great lightsabers were a unique kind of lightsaber that were larger and heavier than traditional sabers. Much like the large great swords of the Middle Ages, great lightsabers were difficult to wield one-handed, and instead forced the user to use both hands. This allowed the user of a great lightsaber to channel their strength into powerful, long strokes. While the saber may unassumingly look similar to any other lightsaber, the reinforced hilt made each strike deadly. Ahsoka had never faced anyone with a great lightsaber before, which was likely why she was overpowered in the duel.
@@Urizen777 Also from Screen Rant: Baylan Skoll’s lightsaber is different, though. It evidently does have a certain heaviness to it, one that is more pronounced when the lightsaber is active. It's likely Baylan’s lightsaber is something known as a Great Lightsaber, a rare weapon specially designed for larger and physically stronger Jedi. The hilts were heavier to accommodate a longer blade. It’s also reminiscent of the crossguard lightsaber Cal Kestis eventually wields in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which is noticeably heavier and less agile.
@@BlkBoyAwesome Very interesting. thanks for the info! As someone who is a HEMA swordfighter, I like this idea, as the difference in weight and type changes the way you wield the weapon completely. This lightsaber fight feels quite different... I get the feeling that they are not just trying to hit each others lightsabers, but almost every stroke had the potential and the intent to kill behind it unless blocked.
It's always fun to see a competent Form I practitioner. In this case he had the strength advantage too, which allowed him to essentially bully Ahsoka while running a solid defense that her Form IV/Form V wasn't working against since she is permanently a "jabber" in technique. Baylan snuck in a Form IV attack to generate power for battering Ahsoka's guard at one point, but that just made his obvious commitment to Form I shine that much brighter. I'm sad the actor is gone, he was giving life to that character.
2:00 Baylen looked so sick right there! When I first watched I thought he was walking away for a split second then used his momentum to swing back at Ashoka
The choreography in this is amazing, its a mix between the speed of the prequels and the steadiness of the OT movies, Baylan uses his superior strength to bash ahsoka while also maintaining skilful moves, and ahsoka using her speed an acrobats to fend of Baylan, by far the best choreography in the Disney era of star war, too bad Ray Stevenson passed away, he carried this show
Rory McCann is a great choice for recasting the role though (he played Sandor Clegane in Game of Thrones). I can see him playing Skoll quite well and with a bit of makeup they should be able to get him looking pretty similar to Stevenson.
Loved the sounds of the sabers. This scene was dope. I really thought every light saber duel in the prequels would be epic I mean every last one lol. We did get some good ones tho but not every one lol
Never seen someone swing so heavy. Almost like when you box a much heavier fighter. Even blocking would have you getting dominated by their size so you must move around.
True. That's Asoka's most glaring mistake here. Trying to mach his strength. Should have relied in speed. She is no joke, but Baylan was just in another level. She could barely keep up. The moment she burned one hand, it was game over.
Far out! He has such a mountainous gravitas to him making him my new fav in SW. I’m so gutted he passed on but he left an everlasting impression. Just wow! So much about Baylon that made him stand out from his stoic nature to his fighting style. Was a great form for his stature!!
Does anyone else recognize that at 2:08 that the "knob" at the far left of the screen is an upside down motorcycle clutch basket? Can't believe it took me this long to notice lol
The only issue I have with this fight is they almost stand around at times during the fight. It would be nice to see them go in for killing blows instead of standing there waiting for the next move. Take for instance when Baylan picks up the rock at 1:56 to 1:59 Ashoka just stands there watching him pick up the rock and fling it at her. In that moment you could’ve had Ahsoka go in for a strike, Baylan block it and then throw it at Ahsoka. She could’ve either quickly cut it in two or got hit by it and quickly have to recover.
I don't know enough about the choreography that went into this. Everyone in the comments keeps mentioning martial arts and kendo. However, what I'm seeing from Baylan is primarily a more medieval-European fighting style, as if he was using a heavy broadsword. Again, I don't know for sure. Personally, I always thought the sword techniques in Star Wars were more Japanese inspired.
Severely is a strong word. I don't personally think she could win in a fight against him 1 on 1 even after her experience in the world between worlds, but I think they were pretty close to matched, in his favor obviously.
The fighting style of Baylan really reminds me of QuiGon Jinn, not that aggressive and pushy, but still powerful. He knows how to use his height and his strength as a weapon. Very impressive
I love how Ahsoka saves her reverse grip, the Form she’s most skilled at, as a last resort, as most duelists in this age wouldn’t have faced that before
Him fighting like a medieval knight. Fight with strength pushing his opponent by pushing them down. What a contrast to the more fluid and agile way Jedi normally fights. It's so good.
Me: Ha, this old man doesn’t know what he’s gotten himself into. Ahsoka is a clone wars veteran. Nobody can beat a clone wars veteran 😂 Also Me:…… Hmm? Huh, come again? Baylen? A clones wars veteran too? …….. uh oh 😐

I wonder why Ahsoka didn't use both of her sabers. I don't know why but watching her only use one feels illegal because I'm so used to seeing her dual wielding.
With his super heavy style he probably ends up bashing one out of her hands, leaving her with one anyway. But she did a lot of acrobatics and Ataru, so maybe she could have slipped a second saber past his guard for some cuts to wear him down.

I'm finally watching this series, and I notices something interesting right from the start (I'm on 1st episode still). Ahsoka acts a lot like Anakin did. I'm not sure if it's on purpose or what, but it feels like the actress watched the prequel movies and copied him a bit which would be fking amazing because if you think about it, Ahsoka would act a lot like Anakin. She was really young and impressionable and copying his every move, so when I saw Ahsoka just standing in a room talking to that other chic I'm just like "wtf she's acting just like anakin". 2:00 Baylen looked so sick right there! When I first watched I thought he was walking away for a split second then used his momentum to swing back at Ashoka
Don't mind me, just lamenting that we could have had Baylan Skoll as the sequel trilogy's main antagonist.
1:40 I love this, feigns the overhead strike which gets Ahsoka to back up and follows the strike through for a more powerful blow
I love the stances they take, Ahsoka is a very samurai approach, while Baylon’s is a very 14th/15th century European knights stance.
Loved the sounds of the sabers. This scene was dope.
I really thought every light saber duel in the prequels would be epic I mean every last one lol. We did get some good ones tho but not every one lol
2 season warriors fighting with a lot of training
I still absolutely adore Stevens' portrayal of Baylon. What a sendoff performance.
My favorite part 1:20 looks so badass
Never seen someone swing so heavy. Almost like when you box a much heavier fighter. Even blocking would have you getting dominated by their size so you must move around.
True. That's Asoka's most glaring mistake here. Trying to mach his strength. Should have relied in speed. She is no joke, but Baylan was just in another level. She could barely keep up. The moment she burned one hand, it was game over.
I love the complementary fighting styles. Baylan fights like a European knight, and Ahsoka fights like a Japanese Samurai.
So sad that we won't get to see the end of Baylan's story.
Yes we will, the character has been recast to be played by Rory McCann (Sandor Clegane in Game of Thrones).
She could’ve either quickly cut it in two or got hit by it and quickly have to recover.
shes not as calm as yoda
It’s amazing to see other lightsaber colors orange and white hopefully the purple lightsaber gets some love again
1:41 god i fucking love that spin
It might have looked cool, but reality is turning your back on an opponent leaves you open for an attack.
@@pauld674do you not realize how MUCH momentum that gets you? Did you see how HEAVY his strike was
I don't know enough about the choreography that went into this.
After that first counter, Ahsoka knew that she was severely outclassed.
Was she outclassed? She seemed to be winning until she toasted her hand and that was with only one lightsaber.
@@ChuckFinelyForevershe was def outclassed lol
@@DatKakashii Maybe, just didn’t seem like it from this fight
Severely is a strong word. I don't personally think she could win in a fight against him 1 on 1 even after her experience in the world between worlds, but I think they were pretty close to matched, in his favor obviously.
Just LOL. Ahsoka is the equivalent of a jedi master by this point, with a ton of field experience to back up her efforts. He is no match for her.
The fight looks breathtaking at 1.25 speed. And it even reminds me Yoda or Maul fights, which are the best
It'd be even more breathtaking to see Ahsoka's choreography from the 7th season of The Clone Wars in live action, but Ahsoka is older here, so ok
Maybe if both actors werent 60 years old it would be faster
I love how Baylen uses the Lightsaber like an actual sword
You can tell the exact moment that Ashoka knew she could not be him.
The fighting style of Baylan really reminds me of QuiGon Jinn, not that aggressive and pushy, but still powerful. He knows how to use his height and his strength as a weapon. Very impressive
Tbf to Ashoka, most of her duels, unless against HIGHLY skilled opponents, would've likely ended at 1:28. But Baylan was clearly no lowly Jedi
Next to Obi V Vader in Episode 4, this is the absolute slowest lightsaber fight I have ever seen.
I love how Ahsoka saves her reverse grip, the Form she’s most skilled at, as a last resort, as most duelists in this age wouldn’t have faced that before
That is mostly because that style is something that looks better aninated but doesn't work as well in live action.
Him fighting like a medieval knight. Fight with strength pushing his opponent by pushing them down. What a contrast to the more fluid and agile way Jedi normally fights. It's so good.
1:34 When he brute force their swords clash down with power.. Terrific face act! Using Anger from the dark side!
Me: Ha, this old man doesn’t know what he’s gotten himself into. Ahsoka is a clone wars veteran. Nobody can beat a clone wars veteran 😂
Also Me:…… Hmm? Huh, come again? Baylen? A clones wars veteran too? …….. uh oh 😐
The great saber is honestly refreshing to see.
It’s nice seeing new colors clash
Her samurai ninja mix Vs his very much knight style is a interesting vibe to this fight.
When I was a kid, before the prequels gave us Hayden Christensen, this is how I always envisioned Anakin Skywalker.
A lot of miserable ppl in here 😂 as someone who watches combat sports, I can appreciate the different fighting styles for their own beauty
I actually enjoyed the show a lot more than I though I would and Baylon is a huge reason why.
In the Jedi Academy Game, one could choose a fight style between: normal, fast, and strong. Well, this dude use the strong style
While this fight ain't particularly well choreographed i love the atmosphere and tension behind it, something that alot of recent SW duals faild to execute
I do appreciate that Disney Wars gave us cool new colors in live action: Dark, Orange, Yellow, & White. Just wish the choreography was better.
The choreography in this is top notch, perfect balance between prequels and originals
@ everyone is entitled to their opinion 🙏
@@cbf1plus868 This is a star wars thread, so I'm sorry, but you do not get to be this reasonable and polite.
Now, I'm gonna need you to whine about Disney while explaining to us why you are right and why others are not true star wars fans. Please.
To restore balance in the universe.
That ignite sound...priceless
I wonder why Ahsoka didn't use both of her sabers. I don't know why but watching her only use one feels illegal because I'm so used to seeing her dual wielding.
With his super heavy style he probably ends up bashing one out of her hands, leaving her with one anyway. But she did a lot of acrobatics and Ataru, so maybe she could have slipped a second saber past his guard for some cuts to wear him down.
Baylan's style definitely is djem so. Maybe a little ataru to compensate for the lack of mobility.
Love the orange lightsaber, orange was my fav color as a kid and after taking some internet quiz big surprise that's what I got. I would totally use the both the light and dark side in fights or life in general in the star wars universe because ill always believe in balance.
Everyone quiet, the only adults are in the room
One thing interesting about this is that He was not a Sith, and she was not a Jedi. It's a fight between a rogue Jedi and a dark Jedi
Been awhile that Ashoka fought with an actually force user, and Baylan used to be a jedi
Endlich mal wieder ein vernünftiger Lichtschwertkampf
Dude, is my video on half speed? Why they're so slooooow......
1:44 the jedi saber, bends haha
Like how she opens with a neutral stance. Meanwhile, he opens with form 4 stance.
Baylen is exactly the kind of Jedi we needed to see a survivor of the Purge doing what he had to to survive even if it was dabbling in the Darkside
Baylons lightsaber style is so methodical. Strong solid stances, power attacks, high defence, minimal movement. Like fighting a tank.
It’s the same style as anakin but with more control.
How far Pullo has come ❤
I haven't watched this show yet because Disney™ Star™ Wars™ isn't real in my mind, but this show screams old samurai movies, & it's winning me over
Ahsoka should have surprised him halfway through by whipping out her second saber and dual wielding.
Baylan Skoll is easily the best character in any newer Star Wars by far, Ray Stevenson did a perfect job and fit for that character, sad that he passed away, great actor, and would have loved to see him further as Baylan Skoll. :(
I think him and Dooku would be great friends if he survived. There pretty similar in many aspects specially about the jedi
hm, it would be interesting to see what would have happened if she had shot at the orb while holding it in her hand. She would have destroyed the orb and her hand..
I can already tell I'm going to like this show, unlike most star wars stuff these days.
That little grin is ominous she knows shes the shit with a light saber
The choreography is still slower than any of Hayden's at 0.5x playback speed.
Everybody is slower than Hayden, lmao. Didn't they say that Hayden had to slow way down for Rosario? I think Ariana kept up with him pretty good.
Baylon's technique is like a mixture of Darth Vader's technique and a old Anakin
Fun fact, Baylan Skoll and his apprentice Shin Hati, share names with the sons of Fenrir. Skoll and Hati will devour the sun and moon in Ragnarok in Norse myth, that is just extremely clever
Probably because filoni is a fan of wolves
Loved baylans greatsword kind of fighting style, looks great. Dawson needs to imorove her fighting skills, like she is very dedicated but she lacks the physical capability to move and lookg good. Her acting is very good. Give her some training and give this show the acolyte fighting team and we will have ine hell of a season 2... also recast baylan he is so necesary for s2
This show had some really great stuff, also some weak stuff but this scene was great
I still hate how Ahsoka holds the grip of her lightsabers in this show, but damn, they dressed it up pretty.
Shin Hati, the Little My of Star Wars.
This was a good scene.
You can really feel the power in Baylan’s strikes
