    One thing I love about this scene is that the Imperials don't screw anything up. The captain makes the right calls, based on the information he has, his XO, when asked, as already anticipated the need for the boarding party and has them standing by. Everyone is doing their jobs well and that speaks to good leadership. They know what they're doing and they're good. So when Luthen out plays them, that makes it so much cooler.

      Actually they did: they were tricked with that port side engine trust into increasing the power of the tractor beam, thus making the counterfeit measures effective with no time for them to react. Its so subtle its brilliant!

    • @billionpod
      @billionpod Рік тому +196

      @@zichiro No. They were tricked but not in the way you stated. The port side thruster "malfunction" was to disguise the arming of the countermeasures as they produce a heat signature Luthen knew the Imperials could detect. Reversing the stabilizers and "trying to get away" is what made the captain call for the tractor force to go up to 5; thus making those countermeasures highly effective and impossible to evade.

    2:40 Luthen asked the droid what the tractor force is, and when it responded he realizes that the tractor force is too weak for the countermeasures, so he powered the thrusters to try to bait the cruiser to up the tractor force. What a magnificent detail

    • @sergioveraruiz5384
      @sergioveraruiz5384 9 місяців тому +26

      I dont think that; the tractor force is to weak for the countermeasures? that have no sense, he asked the droid to know the force but when he realizes the tractor force was level 2 he thought of escaping using only the power of the engines because he did not want to go to combat, luthen always gives priority to discretion, if you pay attention the ship almost exceeded the tractor force but the imperial patrol ship is to heavy so he is stopped by her , Seeing that the engines could not overcome the driving force plus the mass of the ship, he went to plan b, because luthen always has a plan b

    • @catchaaron
      @catchaaron 9 місяців тому +109

      @@sergioveraruiz5384 I get how one my draw that conclusion, but there are elements of Luthen's decision-making process here that challenge your interpretation. First, when the tractor beam is engaged, he doesn't immediately punch it to get away while he's at his farthest distance. Instead, he does the decoy burn so he doesn't have to power down his engines (he justifies his noncompliance as being a one-man job trying to deal with a malfunction). That was necessary to buy him TIME to further arm the countermeasures.
      Second, he is aware of that Imperial ship's capabilities. We know this because his first two actions are to get a false id (because any Imperial patrol will check that) and identify the ship hailing him (Cantwell-class as noted by the droid). He knows that if he tries to run, the Cantwell has the capacity to increase the tractor force. Even the Imperial officers are baffled by what seems to be a stupid decision to try to run from them. That brings us to WHY the tractor force had to be increased: he's releasing tons of small objects to be pulled by the tractor. A weak enough tractor force won't pull them so hard as to destroy the emitter, just like a pebble lightly bouncing on the hood of a car is negligible. Take that same pebble and launch it at a ridiculous speed... now you're talking about damage. A higher tractor force ensures that.
      Third, I think the Plan A & B labelling here is off. His plan A was the Alderaan ID deceiving them into letting him get away without confrontation. Plan B was the violent approach with the countermeasures and shoot-out. A would have been preferable, because the Empire wouldn't then be on the alert for his ship having all the abilities it has. Plan B puts a red flag on that ship type, especially once the Empire eventually figures out the Alderaan ID was false.

    stellan skarsgård is an absolute boss in this scene. Going from a cool customer to a badass in the span of a few minutes. His physical acting is unreal, I especially like the part where he is unfazed by the tie fighter detonating over his ship - he's just in the zone.

    The Fondor is a droid! This amazes me, since I don't know SW's ships at all, except for Han's Falcon and Ties. This droid advises, calculates, plans. In the very first ISB meeting of the series, someone mentions a Fondor had been stolen, among other aircrafts mentioned by names. It would be interesting to watch the whole season by paying attention to the Fondor. I hope we get to learn it's backstory and how Luthen made it so smart.

The regular ties are cheaply manufactured and inferior in one-on-one dog fights due to their limited viewport. Meanwhile the TIE/sa bomber is capable of sending a homing missile at its target. Guess which one Luthan and Fondor took out first?

    Gotta love how he goaded them into turning up the tractor beam's power so that the explosive flechettes could easily sail towards their target - they had to 'charge' but most likely had no form of propulsion to keep them a low profile on scanners - you would probably route ship's power into them discreetly, similar to how blaster power packs could be used as an explosive. And faking the engine burn allowed that power routing to go unnoticed. Someone might complain that the ship had no shields, but it's pretty well-known that you have to disable shields to pull someone in with the tractor beam in the first place.

    • @alphamineron
      @alphamineron Рік тому

      Energy Shields won’t stop accelerating physical shards the size of a cannon ball anyway, and Matter Shields like the one on Scarif requires heavy infrastructure that you can’t put on a ship. So people can’t call shields here
