Awkward. I can't imagine how it went. Did he do it a day before it or when they were giving you sleep inducing drugs. I would at least wait until after the operation so my future wife wouldn't be upset by the possibility of death or serious injury. I dunno, it's strange for me

This is exactly how it went with my husband, up on a hill, except no cameras, we were alone, and it took like 15 seconds total. Special moment that only we shared and it was a genuine surprise.

Millennial here. Our proposal was very LA ish. We were waiting for an hour long wait for kbbq and we were hashing out the details about moving in together. We are both professionals and talked about the tax benefits of getting married. We said yes and then we got a table before the 1 hr wait. It was magical 💕💕💕

I am not going to defend her words, I'm just going to highlight that (especially America) there is a hard focus on girls and getting married.
They are being prepared for this day, from the beginning. They draw this as children...their weddingdress. They play bride and groom.
People tell them that they need to look their absolute best on their weddingday, because THAT is the day they become a wife (after which you are mainly seen as a mother, not as a potentially available woman.) It is the day that is about "them" and "they get to decide" how everything looks.
I'm not saying I agree with any of this, because in my country, the focus is not on the decorations or the music or the food as much (there's not even a dinner or lunch provided, usually.)
But that is how I see many American girls being prepared in life. Their weddingday is the 'only day that is theirs and on which they get to look their absolute best."
Hence the crying, the tears, the fights...this is "the most important day in their life" and that has been said to them since the moment you asked her to marry you. And probably before that, when she was a child, a girl, a teenager, a woman.
Just saying. If that weren't the culture, maybe the women would be more like Finnish women or...French women. Less hysterical and upset about weddings. And they wouldn't feel as if it was their last day of feeling beautiful.

Are you one of those people that excuse and attribute women’s bad behaviors to the “culture” or the “patriarchy”? It is insane to make this argument at a time when people are not getting married nor having children. The marriage rate has been falling for a while now. So “the culture” (which we’re pretending is pro-marriage) is doing a terrible job. Perhaps there other reasons why girls tend to “prepare” and look forward for marriage. “The culture” isn’t always the answer.
I’m not saying that the culture doesn’t affect how we interact with the world, but don’t pretending women are just mockingbirds, incapable of behaving badly on our own.

My husband proposed after I knew him a month! He just said "Ya wanna get married" and I said "Yeah, O.K"....and then we got a license and a day later a minister dropped by my house after he got off work at Sears that night and we got married in the living room! both got up and went to work the next day!! Had a bottle of Annie Green springs wine and a pepperidge farm frozen coconut cake....still married almost fifty years later!! moral of the whole story: whole thing cost around $15.....and no pictures, nothing, I did not care for all the hoopla and did not want to make a big broadway show out of it, suited me fine.
