    I’ve been using Logic for about 15 years. I know how to use it, in a way, but severe depression has stopped me from being as productive and creative as I want to be. I have written tons of little tunes, but not completed one piece of music, even though I would love to one day. I’m 61 now and life is harder than it should be. I really appreciate your videos. They help me to understand a bit of about ‘Planet Logic’. Thank you.

      You might think I'm trolling but you're describing the symptoms of adhd just as much as a depression. I know it's deemed 'trendy' now so you may roll your eyes, but you should investigate it.
      Note, I also have tons of little tunes, and cant finish. Look into this adhd thing, you may find some answers, some reassurance and some relief.
      Peace from Ireland

    Showing PhatFX use opened my eyes to using multi-fx differently. Thanks for this insight. Great video on compression here.

    The stock Compressor is easily the single best stock plugin of *any* DAW.

    I've been messing with PhatFX for about a few months and it continues to impress me. One of my favorite uses is for electric bass gtr. Combining the distortion, filter, bass enhancer and compressor modules, you can get a real full sounding bass. The distortion module can dial in up to 3 modes in serial.

    Really good. A bit like Waves RVox - i.e., one "knob" but you don't really know what's going on under the covers. Great technique in using the stock compressor to see the effect - gonna try it out now!

    The value I see here is really just the built-in limiter, but of course the limiter plug-in can handle this, and not handle it 'with blinders on'.
    There is definitely a value in using one's ears and not getting lost in all the knobs, so we should do that, but there is also a much greater value in understanding what all the different tools in the stock compressor (and I count 17 different useful tools not counting sidechain tools and the 7 basic compressor modules) are capable of, and knowing how to apply them strategically.
    Phat FX has some great stuff in it, but its compressor module can't do one single thing beyond what the stock compressor and limiter are able to do, so I have to ask-why even bother? Unless you haven't done the hard work of learning and understanding what all those tools are even there for.
    In 2005 we were still in a world where hardware ruled and nothing could compete. But it's not 2005 anymore. Things change. Logic's compressor rocks. Some of the emulations actually have more tools than the originals they were emulated from.
    I see much more value in knowing how to use each of those 17 useful tools and applying them strategically than I do in working 'with blinders on'. I'd rather have a toolkit with 17 useful tools in it than one with only 2. Wouldn't anyone who is serious about their work? I hardly think there is a professional engineer anywhere who has neglected to do the due diligence of understanding how to use all of the tools in their kit, intimately.
    In any creative endeavor, there really just are no shortcuts. People looking for shortcuts are never going to amount to anything. Let's just do the work and give the world our gift instead of phoning it in.

      you're missing the point entirely in an effort to brag about your expertise..He's showing people a feature of logic. its nothing to do with hard graft or whatever you're fetishising, he's just saying theres this thing and you can do 1 knob compression on it.

    • @tomlewis4748
      @tomlewis4748 Місяць тому

      @@reganovich You've missed my point completely. You've apparently failed to understand a single word. The most diplomatic term to describe what you've inferred, for some unknown unhinged reason, would be 'looney tunes'. Should I s-p-e-a--k s-l-o-w-e-r?
      And there is not one single word said about whether I have expertise or not, which is ALSO completely beside the point. None of this is in any way about my ego or anyone else's. That would be ridiculous. The point is that a video designed to show that Logic has a shortcut weak version of what can be accomplished with their stock compressor by using something else while your eyes are closed is less than helpful and appears to be nothing more than an excuse to post a video. Disappointing from a source that is typically the most helpful source for Logic on YT and who I wholeheartedly support.
      It's also never a good idea to have wishful thinking that you can do what needs to be done with one effing knob. Or with your eyes closed. Those knobs are there for a reason. Every single one of them. If you apply yourself, even you can learn how to use them. Shortcuts only fool you into thinking you can accomplish something by doing as little as possible, and doing as little as possible is not how anyone ever excelled at anything. In the history of the world.
      One knob? How effective is a guitar with one string? A piano with one key? A car with one gear? Dream on.
      Go look up fetishing, if you think you can actually understand the definition, which I sincerely doubt. Using it as an attack word has little effect when it has absolutely nothing to do with the topic, revealing that all it is, is an attack. And a toothless one, at that.

    Call me crazy or that I have bad ears, but the difference beyond getting louder is so minimal that I can't understand why people obsess over this kind of thing.

      I think the downside of getting great music and music info on UA-cam is that we are unfortunately at the mercy of poor Youttube sound. The nuances that are being explained are lost to us because the sound we are getting from YT is trash, especially if you're not also watching it on a sound discerning speakers (like an iPad or cellphone). All that to say, compression makes a huge difference when correctly applied, but you're not gonna hear and experience it through a YT video.

    • @MonsieurVersatile
      @MonsieurVersatile Місяць тому +2

      It's not about being loud, it's about being consistent in volume. You can do the same thing (sort of) by simply automating the volume or riding the fader, of course. But compression can also add all sorts of desirable sonic artifacts that simply adjusting the volume won't, like forward/backward position in the soundstage, subtle (or not) distortion/saturation, adding punch and drama, creating a rhythmic groove, even the perception of being more in tune. It's an incredibly powerful tool but often takes a while for beginners to appreciate and understand its very real benefits.
