    Thank you for this informative video! I've been a Logic Pro user for decades. Years ago I started buying 3rd party emulations to improve my mixes and have stuck with them. You have showed me that Logic Pro has updated their plugins more than I realized and I need to revisit them.

    Great overview! I’ve been in recording since the early 70’s but never really understood what made the different compressors unique. I learned a lot from this video. I haven’t seen any other discussion of vintage compressors that really got under the hood like you did. Thank you!

  • @jakestewartmusic

    Thank you for this! Can you please took a look at Logic's Alchemy as well? The filter types and VA waveforms have all sorts of abbreviations that hint at what they're emulating, but they're difficult to figure out.
    For example- Mg (probably Moog Minimoog), JP4 (probably Jupiter 4), CS (probably CS80), ARP (2600? Odyssey? Solina Strings?), but the ones that evade me are DC, BL, Eml, sq16...And what are Vintage 1/2 based on? There are even more in the filters that seem to suggest origins, rather than just BP/LP/HP which is self-explanatory.
    This would be a great addition to the series, because I think these are still largely a mystery! I know Alchemy was created by Camel Audio, and according to an old SOS article from 2009, Camel licensed their waveforms from a company called Galbanum. Perhaps there are some clues there

    • @sangstersounds
      @sangstersounds  11 місяців тому

      You are welcome! I would say for the Logic compressor gain staging is not as important as for hardware compressors. As long as you are at a reasonable level somewhere between -18 and -6 and definitely not clipping you will get a good result.

    Nice vid!
    One thing though I've never really see the 'Opto' as an LA2A emulation. Reason being that it still lets you choose the attack, release, and threshold values. Also its doesn't do the two stage release thing (50% of the GR releases quickly release followed by a slower release) the LA2A does. Lastly the detecter circuit has an eq (although on the unit it is adjustable) where it boost the high end, you can also do this in the plug side chain but its not 'baked in'. So if its an 'opto compressor with valve makeup gain, and full set of controls', I'd say its closer to a Tube Tech CL-1B
    But hey thats just me being picky lol, if it sounds good, it is good! Again, nice video!

    • @sangstersounds
      @sangstersounds  11 місяців тому +1

      Thank you so much for this perspective! I never considered that it might be a CL-1B and not an LA2A but it makes so much sense. Everyone online says it is LA2A just with different controls, but you may have changed my mind! I think because the GUI is white I just immediately agreed that its LA2A just with different controls haha. I am also not nearly as familiar with CL-1Bs as I am with LA2As but your points are so valid!

    As I understand it, the distortion settings only work as you approach the specified output setting (0dbfs as default). Does this setting also apply to any signal that is being manipulated by the compressor? Thank you for your explanation and sharing some audio history with us as well!

    • @peoplelikefrank
      @peoplelikefrank Рік тому

      If you turn the compressor plugin on, the signal is processed, manipulated by the the plugin. Even if the compression settings are ‚off’. This goes also for the distortion setting which gets more audible the more compression is applied.

    • @sangstersounds
      @sangstersounds  11 місяців тому

      From my testing the soft and hard distortion settings apply saturation to any signal coming through the plugin (even with no compression happening). The clip setting needs to some type of gain boost either input gain or makeup gain to effect the signal. All three apply more of their effect as the gain is raised. Hope that helps!

Today, you can actually hear it compress, two decades ago, not really.
