I still have both my Paduak N4 and Vintage models. I saved up for so long to get those guitars way back. I remember opening the case and being surprised at the size. I’m a big guy and they looked like toy guitars on me. But that didn’t stop me rocking them live for years.
My paduak N4 I got signed by Nuno when they toured the U.K. in 2008. And it’s actually a 1 piece body which is apparently not very common at all. Weighs a ton but sounds immense.
All the love to Nuno. Such a dude and huge inspiration to me. Great video

Hi guys, Chopper here, cool video, I used to assemble all the N4s in the late 90’s when the custom shop was in Chicago on Elston Ave, it was great being part of such a talented team and cool to build guitars with Nuno’s name on it. I literally assembled hundreds of N4s between ‘96 and ‘01. Those double necks were quite a challenge. Keep Rockin’

Was at Extreme’s Green Bay concert on 9/21 at Epic Center. Small venue and was a great place to see Nuno light up the stage with his incredible guitar playing talent. Always wondered what he was playing going back to the early 90’s. This clip opened up my eyes to the N4/Washburn brand and I’m looking to add one to my collection. Thank you all for posting this Washburn Nuno moment. Nuno kicked ass, Extreme kicked ass and that guitar kicked ass. Thank you all!

A long time ago, back in the late 90's, I had two N4's - one actual Padauk model (which I was told was very rare and handmade in Chicago, Padauk body and neck, ebony fingerboard, black headstock logo, found it in a pawnshop in Maine for $1200), and another quilt top model with a swamp ash body. I sold them in the early 2000's but miss them, they were truly great guitars, especially that Padauk model, it just felt so good to play.

Almost 20 years ago, I bought a sunburst N4 on the internet from a brick and mortar shop in the US (I'm in France). UPS delivered a cardboard box containing a metal case and... no guitar in it ! Turns out the the guy had forgotten to put the guitar in the case. I was pretty pissed off, as you can imagine (thought I had been scammed). I contacted the shop, and the guitars was still hanging on the wall in the US. I ended up receiving it a couple of days later in a gigbag.

Great video, so interesting to have all this details about Nuno's work horse . My first guitar was a black N1, loved it, and did not even know who was this guy name on the headstock. I just loved that guitar and played it every week after college at the guitar shop until I could afford it with my first summer job. Actually the guitar made me discover Extreme 😁. 10 years later I bought an N4 Davies at a really good price to a guy who preferred Les Pauls. This guitar is an absolute joy to play, perfect body, perfect neck and it is true it ages with you 😅.

This was a wonderful video! I also remember that for a short bit of time in the mid/late 90s, when Nuno initially went solo, he was playing Washburn Princess guitars. I always thought they were visually beautiful guitars! I would love to hear why Nuno made the switch from the N series to the Princess series, and why he eventually made the transition back to the N series.

    • @hd73vsjs8xveu3

I've got 3 of them. Well, one is a CT which was the update. I think it was mostly a rebrand. He also cut his hair and went through about 5 different bands: Nuno (Schizophonic); Mourning Widows (the tattoo was the logo used for them: a really decent trio with a great sound kinda darker funky grunge with solos); Population One; later came Dramagods which was another incarnation of people he had commonly played with in different variations over the post Extreme years.
Post grunge Extreme took a huge hit and were out of fashion, but Nuno was always a wonderful musical chameleon and loved the grunge era.
They are really light guitars. REALLY light. Really really nice stock setup even with the Washburn pups. They're my favourite guitar. I think they're so beautiful and genuinely unique looking which is pretty hard to achieve by the late 90s!
I've never played or seen a N in person but I get the sense it's a flatter profile than the P the P feels quite compact and chordy compared to other guitars I've played.
It has that cutaway but it's a set neck so the cutaway is just carved into the wood itself. I actually stripped the paint off my CT and finished it with oil because I love the N guitars but just couldn't buy one it would always feel like I was just trying to be him at least this way I can play guitars my fave guitarist played an people have more or less these days never even seen a P model before let alone realise the link to his period with them.
As for the return to the N4 I always assumed it was his true identity and he moonlit with the P for a while (I always wondered if ultimately this was a money thing) he was always gonna go back.

Eddie Van Halen had been seen and extensely photographed playing bare wood body guitars before he would spray paint them as Frankies. If you actually paid attention, you would have caught Nuno clearly referencing seeing other players with bare wood guitars over the years - he specifically mentioned Joe Perry, who was playing that raw Strat years before Ed. At the time that Washburn approached him, the overwhelming majority of guitars on the market were solid finishes, and the N4 stood out as something different.

I'm 53 years old, I've been playing electric guitar since 1989 and listening to Extreme since 1991. I'd like to point out a few things because I have the impression that Nuno tells a different story each time: 1) In an interview from the early 90s, Nuno said he had owned a Jackson at the beginning of his career and had voluntarily removed all the paint (and considering how much Jacksons cost at the time, it doesn't match what he says in this interview) 2) on the cover of Extreme's first album and in the Kid Ego video, Nuno plays a black guitar that is not mentioned in this interview 3) in other interviews from the time, Nuno said the body of his first N2 is an unpainted body he bought directly from the Schecter factory (and not in a guitar store as he claims in this new video) 4) Washburn guitars have not been found in any store in Europe for at least 20 years and I would like to understand why

You should have asked, or ask next time if you can, Why do Washburns come poorly adjusted when they leave the factory?
mine arrived poorly adjusted, the strings 2 miles from the neck with a lot of tension.... All of us who have currently purchased a 4N have had to take the guitar to the luthier.
This is not very normal if the guitar costs 3300usd.

Boring fact: I was good friends with former drummer Paul Geary's girlfriend in the 80s who turned me on to, "The Dream" as they were called pre-Nuno. We used to go see them at The Channel in Boston all the time. One of my fondest memories is of a booze cruise out of Boston Harbor we took with The Dream rocking the waters. So much fun we had back then. Shout out to Jannine G. for turning me on to them.

The Channel! My band Tizzy opened for Skid Row there. We opened for Extreme at Narcissus too. What a blast from the past.

12:36 It's so true!! I've sanded the paint off 3 of my guitars and they all sound warmer and better to me. Tung oil is cheaper, and easier than fancy finishes that were layered and wet sanded to a mirror like finish and don't let the wood vibrate. Yeah, I'm tellin' ya but you don't have to listen. lol.

I just got a brand new vintage N4 and had to send it back because the quality was so bad. Fret work was worse than anything I’ve seen. Body felt like it was cnc but never finished. Fine tuners were garbage. Neck felt great but I was so bummed out. Especially cause the neck was actually centered and didn’t have the high E super close to edge like many are causing roll off. Blows my mind that a guitar that costs $3500 has worse QC than a Harley Benton. My search continues and thankfully my padauk is perfect.

The Washburn currently, the 4N, are poorly adjusted from the factory...you have to take it to the luthier.
My friend bought a Washburn 4N and told me, he lives in Thailand and he tried several 4Ns and they all fit poorly.
      A month later I bought the Washburn 4N and I felt it was a 600usd guitar....that guitar couldn't be worth 3300usd!!!!. I have a 1995 Washburn N2 and it felt much better!!!
After being at the luthier and making a good adjustment, everything changed....now it is my favorite guitar!!!!!
I don't understand how such an expensive guitar can reach the customer without being properly adjusted....that doesn't happen with Ibanez.

@@danig77 yeah it’s unreal. I’ve never seen frets so bad. The felt like sand paper , had nicks in them and the ends were beveled so bad. Every one was sharp with burs. I did a quick set up and it played awesome but felt like crap in so many ways. I could have sent to my luthier and almost did but that’s j just not acceptable for a new guitar at this price point. I have lots of expensive guitar like Tom Anderson’s, prs , Hamer, fender etc as well as a few cheapies like offshore shelters, Charvel and even a few Harley Benton. Man the 3 Harley’s were under $500 Canadian and are on par with some of my USA fenders in terms of QC and fit and finish.

@@sugarprobe bought it out of pure nostalgia, I have had my N2 since 1995... I saw extreme in Madrid in June and I thought do I have high-end guitars, Fender, Ibanez, Yamaha and I have never bought the guitar of my dreams ?
I looked for it all over the planet, my friend lives in Thailand and there were 4 guitars, same model....here in Spain there was nothing, no distributor.
I wrote to Washburn, they didn't respond... I spoke to Sweetwater and I reserved a Washburn but finally, by surprise, one arrived in Spain and a store called me.
The 4N is small but these models are larger than the one from the 90s, it is still a small body but not so much.
The frets are like they were in the 90s, normal finish...it's not a bullet style.
I think it is a high price for a guitar of this type but, as I said, nostalgia makes us pay for it.
I think Washburn is still alive because of Nuno...in a few years he will die and these guitars will depreciate quite a bit.
