Nearly 40 years ago, Nuno Bettencourt walked into Mouradian Guitars Co in Boston where Pat Badger was working and they formed a bond that would change their worlds. In March of 2024, Pat Badger and Nuno Bettencourt, of multi-platinum band Extreme, along with their tech, John Thayer, invited PG’s John Bohlinger to talk through their current rigs.

Would it be possible to have Nuno's tech offer a download of Nuno's GT-8 patches?
@@n0nyabznss I'd love that too! I've dialed in some of the sounds pretty close on mine, but not all
@premierguitar Just FYI, the name of the pick company they use is Grover Allman from Australia.
Pat is so underrated
Pat is an amazing bass player and great vocalist, I agree
I love that Nuno is a "shut up and play" and "it's all in your hands" kinda guy. He's not whoring himself out for a sponsor. He's not trying to sell you the latest pedal or whatever gear. His effects are sub $500 for everything lol!! THE GOOOOOAAAAAAAAAT
Pat seems like such a nice guy. So humble and calm
I'm glad they're back and flourishing.
Absolutely, Roll on Extreme 7 😂❤❤❤
Me dos!
Nunos too frikkin good for Extreme to not be playing together. And he belongs with them
Indeed. They got caught up in the wake of grunge wiping out pop rock/metal.
Pat is a really down to earth guy and so overlooked it’s ridiculous
Bohlinger does such a great job with the rig rundowns. His demeanor makes the artist comfortable and they are very enjoyable. Great interview with the EXTREME dudes.
And he's so passionate and curious! He really loves what he does
Pat is a very underrated bass player ! Love this band !
Nuno in my top guitarist list but so glad you done Pat's rig, gets a bit overlooked and does an awesome job... Nuno and Pat really compliment each other🤘🤘🤘
Love how Pat is like so many of us grinding on Reverb over a few hundred bucks on a $1k-$2k bass, when most of his peers are just snatching up whatever they want at twice the price.
I like how Nuno's amp/pedal rig is basically the rig I had in high school and figured it wasn't professional enough so I "upgraded"..............475 times.
Apparently I was already set. 😂
Pats part love the shoutout to the Mouradian’s! Was so lucky to have met him and service my stuff before he passed growing up.
Jim Mouradian was an awesome guy. He worked on several of my guitars and basses. So missed. RIP
Nuno could play a trombone and sound like Nuno. He achieved what every guitarist wants to achieve: he created his own sound which sounds like no one else.
It’s great to see Pat. He is one of my favorite players. So underrated.
protect nuno bettencourt at all costs.
The guy is a gem
I can't believe you're actually doing this! I remember requesting it back when you did the Brian May, Slayer and Hunter Hayes rig rundowns. Ultra stoked you got to do this one at long last :D
Awesome stories from Pat, such a great and humble guy! Thanks for this video!
In case anyone does not know, Bill Lawrence's widow Becky and daughter Shannon still make his designs accurately at Wilde Pickups.
Mouradian did all the repair and setup for my basses in the 80s-90s, great to hear about Pat's in his familiar accent.
Pat is such a great guy and for me, one of the best sounding rock bassplayers of the last decades!
So glad you folks are including more bass players in the rig rundowns! Thank you thank you! Keep it up! 😀Be well- Brent, VT
Extreme Rocks!!! Pat is the GOAT and Nuno always be the numero uno. Period.
Lol
At 02:55, It’s a Seymour Duncan 59 in the neck position of the N4’s, not a JB.
Nuno seems to keep it simple.
Not a bad rig Rundown...
Tight sounding
This was AWESOME!!!
thanks for watching!
Pat played a black Mouradian at the Freddie Mercury tribute show - super cool
Nuno is in my top 3 forever and always
Love how simple Nuno's rig is.
Pat has one of the most recognizable sounds in bass. His sound is such a huge part of the whole Extreme package.
Wow Pat is such a sweetheart
Grover Allman is the pick company who makes their picks for anyone wondering. Also, I think we too often overlook what speakers/mics are used in/on the cabinets. Makes a huge difference, The only thing I thought was missing on an otherwise stellar rig rundown. Nuno is tha man. Pat is the Nuno of Bass. Love these guys.
Thanks for filling the blanks Mr Miller.
Cabs are mostly overlooked.
Punchline era live cabs were insanely good sounding.
For the mics, Nuno did a live show with Rick Beato recently, he said that he always uses a 57 and a 421 side by side. For the speakers, I have no idea but he's such a Van Halen fan that I'd guess he has some greenbacks.
@@Stef140 Yes, I recall that about the mics. Just wish they would talk about the placement and types in general more. Nuno has definitely used Greenbacks. But unsure of these new cabs he's been using on this tour.
@@leytoncole3381 Such a unique and cool tone at that album
From tech John Thayer: Nuno's speakers are Celestion G12T-75s. This guitar speaker combines a huge, tightly controlled low-end and aggressive mid-range with a softened top-end.
So great to see these guys back, happy and killing it!
Well done John and team! This was great!!
Pat Badger is such a nice sweet guy !!
A cool story about Nuno's Washburn 4N: his current favourite guitar - 4N - is actually his standard signature Washburn N4, but from the early 1992* (*corrected by the 1st owner to be 1991) run which was made by Stephen Davies - these are considered superior to later pieces. It was purchased new by another kid, Joe King, who then performed a bunch of mods to the guitar (including sanding the neck thus giving it this distinctive feel) and after many years sold it off on ebay, when he changed his music taste. At one point it was then purchased by Nuno (maybe even from the 2nd owner) and rest is history we know. There is an amazing video on UA-cam from the 1st owner of the guitar, Joe King, called "The Untold History of Nuno Bettencourt's Washburn 4N (1991 to 2005)", where he details all those years with the guitar, how it was purchased, all the mods done to it - look it up, it's an amazing piece of history and a great story by itself. A bit of a shame that nobody at Washburn (and Nuno himself to be honest) ever acknowledged the early story and where all the intricacies of this particular guitar come from. Myself I would be thrilled to find out the story about my most cherished guitar and would love to share it. No hard feelings towards the tech, given his quite short tenure with Nuno :)
Hey, I'm that guy, the first owner of Nuno's 4N. Since the interviewer was asking pretty direct Q's about its history, I'm glad someone posted this. One correction, the 4N is a 1991, in fact serial #910815. Cheers!
Love it dudes , thank you for getting Pat in there , I appreciate it .
Thanks John for the epic content. I look forward to your Rig Rundowns. Love reading them in the magazine, but totally dig the effort you do with these interview episodes. Thanks again and well done!!
Nuno, what a sport.
Gotta love Nuno. Not many players on his level would show up in person for their rig rundown.
So great to hear Pat given some rig time too . Great episode featuring my favourite band
Awesome. Seen them twice on this tour they were brilliant both shows. The album is fantastic also. ROCK ON EXTREME
Pats the best, man. Besides being such a super nice guy and a solid bassist, I don't think a lot of people realise just what a voice he has. Triple threat this dude.
I have a whole new respect for Nuno. Old school. 2 guitars. 9v in the Rat. Unreal.
I have been waiting for this! Long live Nuno.
Nuno Bettencourt is insanely talented I recently seen them back home in Boston I was fortunate enough to be front row and I caught three of Nunos guitar picks
Always EXTREME!
I was sitting right there for this...too cool!!
Also I totally appreciate his love for Eddie Van Halen I am a die-hard Van Halen fan at heart Thank you for keeping his memory alive Nuno
What a great interview. Nuno has always been a hero of mine and Pat is so underrated. Not only is he a great bass player, but a great vocalist as well. Rock on!
What a effin great guy!!
Nuno is such a humble guy . The rig is in the fingers!
pat is such an awesome dude. such great stories. what a great rig run down \m/
Those Mouradian basses are really great basses, I got to play one years ago and it was like a piano. But if you look, the shape is actually a C and an S, based on Chris Squire's signature. Some of them have pinstriping to highlight the C and S, but once you see it, you always see it!
love this rig rundown!
Nuno is the man, Pat is such a great bass player and a great singer too.
Love Extreme and I passed that love to my kids which went to their first Extreme concert on March 8 in Orlando. We had a blast!!
❤ great stuff
Hell yes! Nuno is a legend!
So great Nuno showed up!
Such an awesome show, both Nuno and Pat seem like such down to earth people.
I saw them in Tampa and they were so amazing. Caught a pick straight from Nuno that he threw after the last encore song, I’ve never caught a pick I was so excited! Can’t wait to see them again soon!
Saw Extreme in Rochester, NY, not knowing their discography… and damn was that a show!!! They gained another fan from me. Nuno is a charismatic, talented dude, on and off the mic.
Nuno is definitely an absolute beast of a guitarist, man, such an insane player and definitely super versatile from Extreme to his work with Rihanna (which was how I actually first heard him, I don't listen to a lot of Rihanna but his playing with her was great as well) and he's a super nice dude from everything I've seen of him as well
Those basses have epic stories!
I am still completely bewildered (and I will continue to shout this from the rooftops!!). Washburn needs to get their sh*t together and bring back/recreate (exact specs - tapered headstock, curved back, made in Japan) their festival series acoustics!! I've owned a Tanglewood since '79, it is and will always be my #1.
This same or similar model has been played by the likes of Nuno, J. Page, B. Dylan, G. Allman, Chaquico, Hiatt, Francis just to name a few. How a guitar manufacturer can ignore this legacy is beyond me. The current iteration doesn't touch the quality of these original models. Washburn... WTH?!?!?
The industry is dead
Great guitar and bass! One of the best live bands out there! Gary kills in no matter what project he's doing
Love the Mouradian's kodo's!!! Love!!!!
I was at that show!!!
Pat's old Hamer looks amazing.
No body mentioned speakers? Large dust caps. T75s?
Cool down to earth.
Nuno with his great humor.
I can feel something funny will happen. 😂
Pat with his hat, really proud where he's coming from.
You guys are awesome.
Legends.
He seemed Blazed. Rock on
Hes so fumny and such a nice guy. What a killer guitsrists too of course..❤. Great rig rundowm. ❤
What a bunch of great guys having a blast talking about fun gear. Thanks for doing this. Don't forget to reschedule with Ty Tabor!
I was trying to figure out what make Pat’s basses were. Neat story.
Awesome! Thanks so much
EVH will forever be the GOAT but Nuno comes as close as I think anyone could possibly get to matching King Edward's mix of blazing but still melodic lead playing and superhuman (and underrated) sense of rhythm. Seeing him tear it up from the front row 2 weeks ago was more amazing than I ever thought it could be. He's the last of the breed now that EVH is gone.
Saw that same Hamer on Reverb. Still looking for one I foolishly let go twenty+ years ago. Glad he scored one!
Pat and Gary are two of the nicest people!! I've met nuno before, but never got to talk with him at length. being close with the Mouradian family, I've seen the evolution of these fantastic Rock Legends! Everyone know nuno is a unicorn... but Pat is a monster!!!
Fun fact: the bumblebee guitar was also Dimebag's absolute favorite. When he passed, Eddie donated it to the family to be buried with him.
Nuno is numero UNO!!
It's JOHN!! I saw him at his last gig with Lynch in Leesburg Virginia!
Hi Everybody ¡ im from Puerto Rico play guitar too and my Story is back like 1991 Extreme played in Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, with opening act Meat Loaf ¡ What a Show i was lucky that i was Working with the sound and i was assigned to help Nuno,s Guitar Tech and it was an Awesome Experience for me i remember that when Nuno came for Soundcheck i was holding his Washburn Acoustic Guitar with the same Gear that Guitar Player Magazine had shown in his Tour Interview The ADA Preamps, 2 4×12 well torn cabs¡ yeah incredible for me i did not met him cause i think he saw me holding that guitar and his guitar tech kind of like man here is the Boss so i just move i remember him with a knee brace insane show i was at the Mixing Board man✌🎸🤟
As happenstance has it the stripe configuration has a '4' at the base of the guitar and the man known for his N4 now has his version of this classic!
I totally understand what he's saying about the thickness of the paint on the guitar pick The three that I caught during the show you could see that it's losing the paint from being held and also from strumming the strings
No doubt Nunos guitar stories are humbling and i always enjoy hearing them, but wow Pat's bass stories are amazing too!
Extreme are an incredible band, if they’re playing in your city definitely go see them.
Pat is such an underrated background vocalist of the band singing all the high stuff - funny how so many bass players can sing high, especially Michael Anthony. lol
His voice carries Extreme these days. I love Gary, but his voice is pretty worn out, Pat still sounds awesome, though.
That’s a perfect size guitar for someone like me being the same size as Nuno!
My wife asked, "Is John Malkovich high?"while Pat was talking, now I can't unhear it.
Saw them at the Ryman!!!
Nice!!!
Man, Nuno better not go on some of the forums, he'll get roasted for that GT-8 and DSL2000. 🤣
Nothing wrong with the 2000
@@ivorhardenI’ve got Plexis, jcm, Friedman, Mesa and I never stop plugging into my basic jcm2000 dsl. It just works.
@afterstars I'd like to get my hand on one. Loads of players were using them before 2010 when stuff like the jvm came out.
@@ivorharden Really nothing wrong with whatever gear people want to use but some of the forums there's too much cork sniffery.
He’s packing venues with that GT-8 and DSL2000 behind him
They were great at this show at the Ryman.
Bello/Magnifico.☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️👑💥
I'm glad you two are coming around on the stingray! A few years back (when Ian's red stingray was in the giveaway), it seemed like the both of you were off the music man train!
Next, you need to go grab a bongo. The toilet seat spaceship bass!
My story. Huge fan since porno came out when I was 15 or 16.... Bought an N2 new in 91 or 92 , because I couldn't afford the N4 (sitting right beside it in the store) which was about 600 bucks more. 😢 . But still have my N2 today and play it every day. The amount of hours I have on it is insane. Bought my 10 year old at the time a 92 N2 I found cheap , we rebuilt it together and he's now 17 and SHREDS !!! He really is amazing. .... And I still don't have an N4. Wish I could find one that's not 3 or 4 grand. Just cant justify it right now. But have saved searches everywhere hoping for one day.
Everybody love nuno
Quite a few number of years. Bold prediction Cotton
It's a Seymour Duncan SH-1n '59 on the neck position. Not the JB (SH-4)
Pat Badger is such a cool dude.
