  • 12 things I buy as a frugal minimalist.
Frugality isn't about depriving yourself of possessions or experiences. Frugality is about spending your money with intention and not wasting anything. We live in a highly consumerist society where often people spend a lot of money just for the excitement involved in the purchase, but if we learn how to live more frugally we can buy our time back and ultimately have a better, more simple life.
I have spoken a lot about not spending money in my videos, but in this video I wanted to talk about what I spend my money on as a frugal minimalist.
"12 Things I Buy as a Frugal Minimalist"
    1. Freedom
Freedom is very important to me. I do not want to spend my life worrying about money or making it. I buy my freedom through low living expenses, savings, and index funds. These three things allow me to spend less time worrying about money and more time living.
    2. A Beautiful Location
Nature is something that is very important to me, so I want to live in a place that has beautiful nature. I decided to move to Colorado because I wanted to spend more time outdoors and I am willing to pay more for that.
    3. Spending Time with Mother Nature
Most of my hobbies include doing things outdoors like hiking and biking, and the good thing about this is that it does not cost much money. I spend money on gear for these hobbies, but once I have the gear I do not spend much money.
    4. My Mental Health
Doing things like going to coffee shops, concerts, and breweries are things I don't mind spending money on because I think they are really good for my mental health. These are not just drinks, but they are experiences.
    5. The Occasional Restaurant Trip
I like eating at restaurants, but I do not do it all the time because I do not want to lose appreciation for them. I limit myself to eating out, but I still do it frequently.
    6. Weekend Trips
Instead of doing one big vacation every year, I prefer to do multiple long weekend trips doing things like camping. Camping is pretty cheap to do and so I don't spend too much money doing it.
    7. Visiting Friends and Family
I do not mind spending money on flying out to different parts of the country to visit friends and family. I do not want money to stop me from seeing people in other locations.
    8. Peace of Mind
Anything that gives me peace of mind and stops a worry I will spend money on. For example, if I need to replace tires on my car, I won't even think about it and do it because I don't want to worry about anything dangerous happening.
    9. High Quality Items
Anything that I plan on having for a long time, I buy high quality. I prefer to spend more money on something that works then save money buying something that doesn't work.
    10. Health
I spend more money on high quality foods and a gym membership because I believe that you can't do anything unless you have good health. I will never try to save money at the sake of my health.
    11. Ownership
I prefer to own things rather than pay in payments. I like to know that things are mine and I do not want to have to worry about missing a payment or people calling me regarding an item.
    12. Exploration
Travel is the only thing you can buy that will make you richer. I like to spend money on traveling to different parts of the world and having a good time.

Buying fresh spinach. I eat a done of it in smoothies, steamed, and raw. I tried to buy the frozen stuff but I don't care for the texture or taste of it.

One of my best mini vacations was when my son and I drove to Washington DC to the Smithsonian. We stayed at a fairly inexpensive place and the museums and sights were FREE. It was an amazing 3 day trip and I’ll never forget it.

Totally agree about socializing. And restaurants definitely have to be better than what I can do, and im a darned good cook. Also I'm debt free, mortgage free, with savings and investments. Not from inheritance or lottery tickets. Just from following a budget, working a regular job, and living below my means. It can be done.

Hi Austin. I like your ideas except for home ownership. I bought a home last year and my mortgage is the same I was paying for a studio apt. I have 6 times the space. Room to allow my brother to stay rent free while he applies for disability...he had been living in a shelter for 4.5 years. Also, I run an airbnb out of my finished basement that pays half my mortgage. Buying a home has been a blessing to me and my family. Also, Im a disabled vet so I dont pay any property taxes.

    • @angelalaskodi3459
      @angelalaskodi3459 2 роки тому +6

I agree. I live in California and pay $300 per month property tax, my home is paid off. If I were to rent this home, it would be at least $2,500 to 2,800 per month. So buying does pay off big time.

If you get these 4 Categories under control, you are set for life.
*Transportation* We usually use our E-Bikes for transportation w/ a bike trailer in tow.
*Housing* We have DIY Solar which reduces our Power bill from $350 to $250 a month. Remember we also charge our E-car 1x a week. We do not pay a water bill. Our home is smaller than the average home so that helps cut costs.
*Food* We grow 50% of our food. Dirt is a a natural antidepressant
*Health Care* We are on Medicaid 4 months a year to avoid paying a $100 a mont fine in Calif.Receive 20% off of our power bill due to re-certifying each year when we are on Medicaid and have no income. We work a small, home-based business seasonally

Fantastic info. As you said at the beginning, everything is not for everybody. My biggest take away from your videos is how you realized what’s important at such an early age and stage of your life. You didn’t succumb to social expectations and are living on your own terms. While a few of the comments may pick apart your elements of your message: Eye on the ball, people…eye on the ball. Many of us got caught up in consumerism and made a lot of financial mistakes. Got into this frugal/minimalist lifestyle later than sooner.
    Keep up your messages.

Good perspective. You spend money on experiences and things for a better term that contributes to your life. I would add. If you are driving a beater and your goal is let's say a Lamborghini, don't first buy a VW, then a BMW then a Mercedes and finally your dream car. Save and invest for your dream car and when the time comes, buy it in cash.

#7 is what I want to start doing. I have family that I have not seen and I need to put aside my lazyness and just take short trips to see them. My mother is too old to travel like she use to, my sister has too many kids to pack up and see me and my place in San Francisco has no parking so it's hard for people to come see me. I think since I do love my family, it's my job to suck it up pack up my dog LOL and get my butt out there. I move every year sometimes every other year state to state sometimes out of the country, so travel is something I just see as stress.

The question about whether something will carry on costing you money . I have a pony which costs me a fortune but for me is worth every penny . It’s a good question and sometimes the answer is yes but is still worth it . Thank you , I love your channel ( 64 year old woman from Derbyshire , England )

Wow, you're a very rich person! Do you cover pony's expenses yourself? If so, how did you earn that much? You could be my role model...

My hubby loves going to the cafe everyday. He spends at least 1-2 hours there, out of my hair 🥰.
We can afford it, absolutely great for both our mental health.
