I used to think buying this or that would uncomplicate my life but I was just throwing money out of the window, Austin Williams. I was buying things to impress others when I was a young man with no gray hair. I used to want what everyone else had but now I want only what I want and because of that mind frame I have more money to buy healthy food that I cook at home. When all is said and done -- regardless of age -- health is exceedingly important and I'm glad I got off the hamster wheel. My hair is now gray but that's okay.
I want my life back - less time wasted shopping for things I don't need, more time hiking/walking and spending more time with those I love. Now THAT is living!!
I want to be excited about having things rarely rather than often. Vivi on ‘What Vivi Did Next’ allowed herself £10 to spend on Christmas treats and seeing her excited about an orange was financially life changing for me!
Learning from past mistakes. Never ending shopping trips for things I didn’t even use once. Saving the planet now by buying less thus being a financial minimalist.
Mine is because my husband is the one working while I’m with the kids. The more we spend the more he has to work and be away from us. So I try to keep our expenses low for him, also so our kids can have a very secure future with financially stable parents to give them a great start!
I adore you. Older black female American. Abhor consumerism. Reject peer pressure. I lead, I don't follow. Stumbled on your channel. A vegan. Don't eat out. Very scornful, so I prepare my food always. Misery loves company. When they don't see me with the latest "stuff", they assume I can't afford it, little do they know. I just choose a simple life. I enjoy saving, and hate spending. ☺️
First off, I’ve binged watched pretty much all of your UA-cam videos today! I have to say that you are extremely relatable and skilled in conveying your message without being condescending like other minimalist preaching UA-camrs. As an older man nearing his fifties, I realized in my mid forties what it meant to live life with intention, appreciating the little things and living with less. At your young age, you are very wise about the priorities of life. I have to point out that the statements you make about life holds true (and spot on) and I hope you continue to spread your message to those who believe materialism equals happiness. We both know it isn’t. Keep up the excellent work and best of luck with your growth on YT! You’ve gained a follower in myself!✨
My grandmother live through the depression, she was so creative with everything in her life. She sewed her curtains, then made them into clothes, she made slip covers for her furniture, she made things from the margarine tubs, and just never threw things away , instead she found a creative use for them. People today have no creativity, they run to Walmart for every need instead of thinking outside the box and finding solutions that do not cost money!!
I am a Latino who lived 15 years in Central America and now, most of my life I have been living in the US. You nailed it about Latin countries having a strong family and community structure. This is my theory on how I view the American culture and Latino culture. In the US, people love to spend their free time or leisure time going to the mall or store to buy something. In Nicaragua for instance, people spend their free time or leisure time going outdoors, visiting family or friends or meeting up for a drink or coffee. People over there go shopping only when they need something. The social life in those Latin countries is 10 times the social life in the US. Friends and family will knock on your door without calling to announce a visit, they just show up and it is perfectly fine. It’s 2 different worlds buddy.
Exactly, 2 worlds. One of my big theories is related to transportation and city design. In the US things are so spread out, so you have to drive everywhere. Being in a car takes away the small interactions that create a community. For example, in Ecuador you walk and take buses everywhere, and when you do this you would have small conversations with the tienda person buying eggs or see friends as you walk to the market, or even on the extremely crowded buses there was this deep sense of equality and community. Everyone was miserable, but we were equally miserable crammed in this bus, lol. This just made you feel like you were a part of the community, rather than an individual in a car. In the US, cars and how spread out everything takes away from these tiny interactions that make up a community and take away from these interactions that are so important to human mental health. The comparisons between Latin America and the US is very fascinating. This topic will probably be in a future video :-). I really enjoyed reading your comment, Jorge!! Thank you!
@@ElAgustin that is correct about interaction in public transportation, etc and the fact that here in suburban cities everything is spread out and most people drive their own cars. For that same reason in Latin America you see crowded streets of people walking and interacting during rush hour b/c a good percentage of people do not own cars. I guess that this is a different topic and a video discussing this will be interesting to watch. On a side note, I subscribed to your channel and enjoy your videos very much. They contain a wealth of information and my hats off to you for inspiring many people. Look I am not frugal at all. However when you get to a certain age (close to 50 in my case), you certainly start thinking about retirement. Being frugal now certainly will help in having a decent retirement. I guess it’s not too late for me. My goal will definitely be as you state in your videos. Sometimes having a family to support makes it extremely hard but I know it can be done. Saludos amigo.
@@ElAgustin Idk, I think it is something else. Here in Spain most people have cars. Still, families are strong networks, always there to help when a recession strikes or any need arises. People enjoy coffee or beer together on a regular basis, with friends or workmates. Maybe it has something to do with us moving less so we tend to have our family somewhat closer, but I think it has to do with culture. It might be our Catholic background that instilled the idea that helping others and sharing is a must, richness means little and family is sacred but we cannot conceive the idea of a millionaire sibling and a struggling one. Grandparents take care of the kids to help parents, adults move back into their parents house if the market is slow or if their parents need help, brothers share flats when they grow up and need some help, nieces and nephews move to their uncles and aunts house if they need to go to university in a different city and anyone helps anyone else finding a job or selling a flat or finding a good car deal. It might be cultural after all.
Love your channel Austin! I would say the US had community about 40 years ago. Families lived in walking distance and most people in your community were of the same status. So people enjoyed simple time together. But now as people become more successful financially they move to more affluent areas and states away. There is also tv and social media always telling you , what you have is not enough. It was enough until you turned on the tv or went to the store. I appreciate you and your channel.💗
I love that you don't focus on saving.money on certain purchases but rather on how limiting consumption makes our live richer in numberless ways. Since I've become frugal and switched focus from consumption to creation, my money anxiety has disappeared. Now I can devote my energies to books, music, movies, creating delicious food. You are a very wise (and funny) young man. Muchas gracias!
i am 59 and have recently become a financial minimalist. my husband has us on no-credit living. we only get an item if we have money in the checking account. we don't touch our savings. we pay for road trips on cash. if the debit card can cover it then we purchase it. we only buy necessities.
I just wanted to share, a friend from work went on a multi country trip after her cancer diagnosis and was blown away when she was on a beach in Africa the locals shared the fish they caught with her. And cooked right there on the beach. They clearly didn’t have much but we’re so so happy. Many people have reported this on visits to very poor places. You help us to have gratitude and be happy enjoying nature and simple things.
I've been a minimalist since 2014. We were going to move house (and then didn't!) As I was packing, the thought occured to me that maybe I didn't want to pack and move all this crap! I cannot tell you how many loads we took to the charity shops (filling a our Ford van and even a trailer pulled behind it!) I've been decluttering ever since (it's amazing what still finds it way into our home) Now, I'm rededicating my to minimalism!
I just discovered your channel and I am hooked. Thank you so much. I feel like I had lost myself for the past 22 years constantly buying things that I don't need but because of your channel I am focusing now on the most important things in life and one of them is to spend my money intentionally and save more so I can have the freedom to do the things that really make me happy in life. Thanks again.
I’ve been thinking about this concept “financial minimalist” for awhile now and to be honest, didn’t have the guts to get on board till about 6 months ago. Thankfully some major life events happened that have propelled me to this lifestyle I’m now in full pursuit of… but it took me having to overcome some major issues involving my ego. Learning to be okay with people thinking you are poor or boring or can’t pay your bills or lack good taste/style (whatever that means) has been something I’ve needed to come face to face with. I think most people overspend to prove to everyone else “I’m doing great!” But when I really think about that behavior, that’s actually overcompensating. A quiet confident person doesn’t have a desire to tell people (let alone strangers!!) that they are doing well financially. Ahhh this has become a favorite topic of mine to talk about and my husband and I are loving your videos! So cool you’re in Colorado, we live in CO as well. ✌️😀
Biggest example is cars…people buy brand new and lose $1,000 the minute they drive it off the forecourt as it is instantly now a second hand car. I buy low mileage 10 year old cars that have been driven by grannies, you pay less than a quarter of the new price. 😄
What I don’t like about the FIRE movement is that they only live for the future (once retired). You only live once, so enjoy a little. It’s okay to go to the coffee shop, eat out once a week. Just set a budget.
It's also down to necessity. In India the families are close knit, look after the elders and each other. Living in multi generational households. In India there's no state pension unless you work for the government and its hard to get a job in government. There's a lack of state benefits and so family look after each other out of necessity. It's about survival.
H P, So close knit that according to Unicef almost 30 million children are abandoned every year. I'll spare you the details of how a lot are abandoned. Forgotten the percentage of disabled & elderly that are abandoned. Wouldnt be holding up India as an example if family unity. Such a horrible society with the caste system. Almost impossible for people to rise out of poverty.
And they don’t kick their kids out at 18- which leads to the kid not being there for the parents as they age and become needy. Now we face the blowback of the culture we created here
I agree 100% with you, Blanca. Austin Williams' resonates with me as well. It's as though he's talking directly to me in his video. And it's wonderful his subs have jumped and I couldn't be more proud of him. He really cares.
Watching your video reminded me of what my Grandfather told me when I was young ! You Spend Your Health to Get your Wealth ! Then spend Your Wealth to get your Health ! Keep up the Great work of teaching the World about Life !👍
You are a breath of fresh air, Austin. Money is important but it needs to serve you. Too many people waste their lives in pursuit of money. It only takes a few smart financial decisions to totally change the quality of your life. (Take this from someone who bought a beautiful home alone on a minimum wage job). Make your furniture from fruit crates, raise your kids in a tent. Do whatever it takes to have a life that you can love.
If you're wondering about the tent, I knew a family that pitched a tent on someone else's property while they saved the down payment for a house. I knew another family who bought a house and then raised their four kids in the basement, so that they could rent out the rest of the house to pay the mortgage.
Always such a great perspective. Money and frugality but not for the goal of riches or just money itself- you always get to the heart and what matters. so good
I love what you say. I wish I had you younger people with your minimalist ideas. I grew up with the buy, buy, buy! It's a tough thing to try to live with. I love it now that material things just don't matter to me. I have given away most of my stuff & trying to narrow down to just have what it takes to live on. I got everything that I have by not using credit cards & what a mistake that was. I am paying them OFF as soon as possible & getting rid of them....for good. I am going to use one of them to buy with to make the 5% payback, making sure I can pay it off monthly! Thank you for the ideas!!!! I'm 80 years & having the best time doing all this minimalism!!!
Hermano. I love your Chanel. . Finally i got all the points together. Some I already knew and got reinforced on your videos. I knew the reality of money And the bad relationship people have with it, the way they look at it. After all I’m not that crazy. Im very happy. Mortgage paid off money on the bank. Just got back from Oaxaca Mexico my home country, learned a lot on my trip. Life is good. Gracias.
spot on my friend, as a young man growing up in a poor country I was the happiest, first world changed me, I don't have that feeling anymore, something was lost and I'm still desperate to have it back..
Good sir, I believe you are spreading a good and balanced middle path message to the world. I very much empathize. My old path involves minimalism with gaming (d&d and video games for recreation and collaborative storytelling alongside travel experiences) as well well as elements of Buddhism. Please keep on doing what you’re doing!
Keep yourself balanced and humble. This is the key to life! My cousin and I figured this out in our 20's and it gives you another perspective in life. Otherwise, you'll be focusing on the wrong things that don't really matter for your well-being.
Just found your channel and find your way of living to be such a huge inspiration. I love your videos!! Muchas gracias por ser como eres, Saludos desde Uruguay
right on Austin, iam a man after your same heart,I went to the Dom. Rep. iam a min. also, i will retire there, in a few weeks. dont need much money, every thing paid off. good luck, thank you, nice to see someone that is knowledgable and authentic
Excellent video, I resonate with all 10 reasons as well. This reminded me a lot of the overarching principles in "Walden", "Your Money Or Your Life" and "Early Retirement Extreme", books I highly recommend.
I'm loving your perspective! When my kiddos were little (I'm 63 now and my kids are in their 30's), we vacationed in Pentwater, MI. There are some nicer, expensive homes to be sure, but mostly, there are older homes that are well kept. Nothing is super fancy. We LOVED it! The pressure to be 'the best' or 'perfect'. It was so relaxing! And then of course, we come home and the pressure to be 'moving up' or to have the perfect house so that the value goes up - oh the STRESS! My youngest son got his Associates degree from our communtiy college and got grants. Not only did he go for free! He has over $2000 left over!
😥I spent 5 years at a community college, spent another 5 years at a University and than 2 years getting my graduate degree in Accounting. For me school was always hard but I had nothing better to do so I stuck to my accounting major and just pushed through. I don't think the school system is for everyone but I do believe in education.
My husband enjoyed going to school, he went part time, so it took a while. He started at 25, spent 8 years for his BS, 4 years for his Master, then 4 more years for his 2nd Master. By then, he was in his 50s 🤣🤣🤣. I think it would have been better if he went to school full time.
My mom grew up in poverty. I grew up firmly middle class in the stuff obsessed 80s and 90s. My mom had to make her own toys out of found items. She is light years ahead of me when it comes to creativity, problem solving and imagination. All the toys I had around me actually decreased my creativity and less appreciative of things.
I started as an accountant, so to learn quick how to manage money. I always had savings; I bought second hand cars and motorbikes. I bought older houses and did a lot on rebuilding’s myself, I had never has loans from banks. I do not want to work for greedy banks. So, had / have villas, a lot of cars and motorbikes. And NEVER money problems.😊😊😊😊 On school, they teach you a lot of BS, except how to learn manage money.
Wow as I watch more of your videos ( I just discovered you last week ) I see so many similarities in the way we think about life, money, relationships and the world around us. Great job keep it up! Saludos para ti chico!
It makes my life richer. Life is contrast, and you need to create experiences that make you thankful. A tiny example. I had stopped enjoying sweets before sugar was steady dripping into all of my meals. I decided: sugar is a treat and have a cake or a chocolate bar on friday afternoons. It tastes like heaven.❤ and I save a ton on groceries, as cereal, snacks, Jam, sirup, ice-cream, bisquits, etc. don't make It into the cart. I'm healthier, happier and have more money😅
Came across your channel about a month ago and I love every single video. I was a shopping addict for so long but now I'm starting to embrace living a simpler life. Every penny counts! Can you do a video on how you use your computer to budget? I just do my budgeting on paper, but I want to learn to do it on my laptop. Thanks Austin!!!!!
Wow I just watched a video from 6 months ago and your vid quality is amazingly better. Better video, sound, editing and your delivery is even better! Your channel is gonna blow up!
Just make opinion, buying is better. But mortgage and taxes and everything associated with living in a home has to be the same or cheaper than renting month to month. Eventually rents go up but mortgage stays the same . Also when you rent and move you just get your deposit at best but if you stay long enough and sell you take something maybe not everything you paid into living there, but at least something. But buy smart!
I love seeing someone my age (well almost I’m 29) that shares my values and speaks with such intelligence! Keep the great content coming. Your my favorite UA-camr ❤️
I like your perspective. My problem is if I can't walk out of my job today and be financial secure, I'm forced to deal with issues like bad bosses, market changes that make my job not necessary, down sizes, having to go to work when you don't want to. It takes my freedom away, and debt just makes it even worse.
That's why it's important to at least must have done something today that will give a big contribution to your future. Don't stay long working with bad bosses if you are capable of changing the narrative in the near future.
You are an inspiration to the true value of economic truth and value of modern life. I live the same values and economic understanding. Please continue with your truths. Maybe people will begin to understand your true message. Again, Bravo to you!
Another great video Austin congratulations, I liked that you mention than there is no better society they are just different. Your spanish improves day by day keep on practicing.
What are your thoughts on home ownership? I have owned homes but have rented over the last 10 years because I like to move every couple of years. At 48 years old now I'm just not sure if I should invest in a home or keep renting. Thoughts?
Hi. From day 1 I found your channel and listened to you I have become your fan because you speak/talk with sense. I have learned from your humble experience. Keep making videos because I can't help myself but to listen to your videos attentively.
This is awesome, I’m wanting to be more of a financial minimalist so that I can put more money and time into my business. Also I’m still in college but I want to have a more simple life even when I get a job and then my part time business. So the extra money I can use to help people and travel. I pray God helps me in this consumer society that keeps us comparing. It’s important to stop and reflect to remember how blessed we are at the current state.
It's never too late to become who you want to be, as long as you're capable of educating yourself and making sure that you can enhance your knowledge in whatever craft you're gonna get into. In investing, it's very important that you equip yourself with knowledge in order to successfully hurdle all the challenges that may come your way.
Me encanta la idea de libertad financiera, quisiera saber como hace con el seguro médico porque es demasiado caro si uno no está en un trabajo que lo patrocine en parte
"Community" IS a material possession. There can't be one without the other. A "community" that has nothing is not a community; it's a horde of landless, homeless, broke, stray stragglers who will likely disperse and die soon.
Me parece que no vivió en la costa, porque ahí son súper consumistas. Vienen a Miami solo de compras !!! Especialmente los de Guayaquil , hay muchos malls y todos es caro pero igual las personas se endeudan para tener cosas inútiles en mi opinión.
What is one reason you are a financial minimalist?

Your videos always resonate with me. Btw it’s great to see your subs jump from 600 to 3k+ in a week. Much deserved!
I agree 100% with you, Blanca. Austin Williams' resonates with me as well. It's as though he's talking directly to me in his video. And it's wonderful his subs have jumped and I couldn't be more proud of him. He really cares.
Yes. He deserves more. Waiting for the day Austin gets a million subs. Hopefully soon. All the best.
Thank you! It's so wild!
I sub when it was around 3k, by the time im writing this, its already more than 5k
Money and frugality but not for the goal of riches or just money itself- you always get to the heart and what matters. so good
i am so much happier now that i practice minimalism
I knew the reality of money
And the bad relationship people have with it, the way they look at it.
The less you own, the less responsibility you have as well. So true!
you could write a book full of all this wisdom
What your said about Ecuador was spot on in regard to homelessness. I have often thought about that same point.
Yeah, it's so interesting how you see poverty, but no homelessness.
What an amazing video. Thank you :) I am on a journey to simplify my life.
Love the way you talk about your vision of life and money. So much passion !
Gotta live with passion!
Austin you are wonderful.... subbed and liked ! great content !!!
This is probably your best video. I am learning a lot from your financial tips.
Less is more! I agree with you! Claro que si! 😃
I really enjoyed your video. What a refreshing perspective on life. Your segment on loss of humanity was so true.
Happy Monday and Memorial Day! Always watching your videos.
Happy Memorial Day to everyone in the United States. Enjoy your Monday, Vita. Cheers from Canada.
I am like you... Frugal but wealthy. Saludos desde Colombia 👍
Thank you so much, Austin Williams. Another awesome and insightful video. A+
Haha that’s funny. I might start grading UA-cam videos when I comment too 😅 A+
Superb video!
Thank you for sharing.
Very enlightening. Easy to get lost in a big city with regard to community.
Thanks for changing my life
Wow as I watch more of your videos ( I just discovered you last week ) I see so many similarities in the way we think about life, money, relationships and the world around us. Great job keep it up!
Saludos para ti chico!
Right on! Glad we think similar!
@@ElAgustin hey great minds, and good looking guys, think alike LoL🤪
Hablas Español muy bonito! Me encantó el video.
At age 70 I have never been married. My funeral will be my wedding and the "Angel of Death" will be my bride.
I was married one time. It lasted for six months. I'm now looking for someone to marry again. I'm 65. 🙃
Sounds great. At least you have a plan.
Your content is great. Excellent principles to live by.
Guy you are a realist
I like love your language waw
Sombody is talking to me waw
I agree with this.
I will add it to my ever growing list!
I don’t care about being part of community but I agree with your minimalism ideas You are very smart
I would love to hear more about the lifestyle in Equador and how it differs from a more consumerist society
This was an awesome video buddy. Totally agree with this.
Wow I just watched a video from 6 months ago and your vid quality is amazingly better. Better video, sound, editing and your delivery is even better! Your channel is gonna blow up!
Thank you, I am trying!! Learning as I go!
I adore you too !!!! Jacqueline here 👋 You keep me on track 👣.....! Happy Thanksgiving ...
Thanks! Happy Thanksgiving!
@@ElAgustin it was a frugal one. Free Turkey from work
Hi Austin….any ideas on rent vrs home ownership…I like your content and very relatable to the average person.
I guess I have the title "UA-camr" now! haha
Thank you, Tim!
So wise to be so young thank you
Another great video Austin congratulations, I liked that you mention than there is no better society they are just different. Your spanish improves day by day keep on practicing.
Start with this book from Fumio Sasaki: "Good Bye Things".
So much wisdom in this chanel, plus delivered in a very interesting and enjoyable way. Instant sub for me.
Gracias!
Lovin' the Spanish! Great info...thanks
Great video Austin! Saludos de una venezolana desde Phoenix 👏👏🌵
!!! Me encanta el acento venezolano. Es muy divertido!! "no vemo" en vez de "nos vemos." jaja
@@ElAgustin Si, las personas de Caracas hablan muy rapido y omiten la ultima consonante en algunos casos. I'm enjoying your videos 👏👌👏
I am starting to live as a minimalist too.
Love your channel! 💚👍
Thank you!
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!!!!!
What are your thoughts on home ownership? I have owned homes but have rented over the last 10 years because I like to move every couple of years. At 48 years old now I'm just not sure if I should invest in a home or keep renting. Thoughts?
Rent in the best neighborhood possible and keep buying your freedom back.
Hi. From day 1 I found your channel and listened to you I have become your fan because you speak/talk with sense. I have learned from your humble experience. Keep making videos because I can't help myself but to listen to your videos attentively.
I appreciate the encouragement!
Gracias amigo
As a Dutch viewer you mentioning Jeff Bezos and the bridge in Rotterdam made me smile!
Haha! It's crazy how far UA-cam reaches! Austin's apartment to the Netherlands!!
☺️ muchas gracias Austin me encanta tus videos!!

You are the nicest 💛 ❤️ 💗 💕 💖 💙 💛 ❤️ Spanish speaking person I have ever met.
Muy Bien !!

Great video
Noticed, pins on his world map on the wall ❤
Wish I'd known you when I was 18
So what’s your thoughts on purchasing a home? Is that something you see yourself doing down the road?
Eventually! All in time. Now I prefer the landlord fixing things!
Lovely Comment.
God Bless
Young fellow, you've got the knowledge of someone twice your age. How I wish, I was only 10 years younger. Keep up the good work.
It's never too late to become who you want to be, as long as you're capable of educating yourself and making sure that you can enhance your knowledge in whatever craft you're gonna get into. In investing, it's very important that you equip yourself with knowledge in order to successfully hurdle all the challenges that may come your way.
I agree with u Olga. I just started!
I know spanish because I know italian. Very similar languages.
very nice video
Me encanta la idea de libertad financiera, quisiera saber como hace con el seguro médico porque es demasiado caro si uno no está en un trabajo que lo patrocine en parte
"Community" IS a material possession. There can't be one without the other. A "community" that has nothing is not a community; it's a horde of landless, homeless, broke, stray stragglers who will likely disperse and die soon.
Saludos desde Alemania 🙋♀️
Gesundheit!!
Me parece que no vivió en la costa, porque ahí son súper consumistas. Vienen a Miami solo de compras !!! Especialmente los de Guayaquil , hay muchos malls y todos es caro pero igual las personas se endeudan para tener cosas inútiles en mi opinión.
Here's the most important rule for living a simple life and being a minimalist- don't get married.
Haha who hurt you? 😂
Hi! Love your videos!!
