Micro center in seattle would be nice considering washington has all the major tech companies such a microsoft, apple, google, and amazon. I'm from seattle and there is best buy and target but no micro center, frys electronics customer service was non existent when they were around before they shut down. There is office max and office depot too but these stores pale in comparison to micro center with the exception of frys electronics. I used to shop at frys electronics since it was cheaper to find stuff that I was looking for since they had stuff that I could not find at radio shack before radioshack shutdown. The employees at places that i mentioned all said to look on amazon, some of the stuff I used to buy on amazon always says unavailable since they were cheap and affordable. I prefer to shop in stores rather than online so I know exactly what I'm paying for and I can always return or exchange what i paid for.

Skip to 6:19 to get to the point lol. TLDW is that the processor has diminishing returns at higher resolutions which is obvious. Still beneficial though and even outperforms processors that cost more and it's also on a new AM5 socket that will be supported for years to come. Basically just get a 5800X3D if you're limited on budget but know that it's on a dead AM4 platform.

    • @Derpynewb
      @Derpynewb Рік тому +11

Thats not diminishing returns. Thats a gpu bottleneck.
Cpus don't care about resolution. If it can hit 60 at 720p it can hit it at 8k. Gpus on the other hand . . .
If you prioritise high fps then a strong cpu is important. Games you play and how much fps you want dictate how strong ofc.

We should also consider that anyone in a position to spend a minimum of $1600 dollars (usually more) on a 4090 is not usually looking for where they can cut corners on their build. Price-to-performance really only matters when you’re limited by your budget. (Admittedly, that is most of us but most of us also can’t afford a 4090 no matter what cpu we pair with it)

    • @dhLotan
      @dhLotan Рік тому +33

There's two factors at play here too. If you go AM4 there are no CPU upgrades coming for you. If you go AM5, you will not only have the best, but it will bottleneck later and you have upgrade potential. And like you said, people buying 4090s are splurging and I doubt they go prior gen/budget on the other parts after dumping that much into a GPU 😂

But in all honesty, CPU just doesn't matter all that much for 4K and even 2k. My plan was to use the 7600x as a placeholder until the X3d chips came out 4 months later - but I've been happy with it and there's not really anything to gain as I don't play at 1080p

That computer lasted me until 3 months ago when I got sick of awful fps in WoW raids so I built a 7800x3d with a 7900xtx in a MSI Mag x670e Tomahawk mobo. Since AMD actually supports their sockets for more than 2 generations I'm looking forward to actually upgrading this computer in the future instead of building a whole new one. @Night_Hawk_475 Рік тому +1

@@kovrcek I don't think 3600/cl18 is that slow when it comes to DDR4. it's 10ns first word latency, which is around the cutoff for diminishing returns. (And matches the latency from the DDR5 set). And while ryzen is extremely memory-speed sensitive, the x3d variants were much less so than the normal versions of the same CPUs, for both the 5800 and the 7000 series x3d chips.
Though I do agree with you that it would be interesting to see further comparisons that get into testing more differences between the CPUs at varying ram speeds, but at the end of the day I do think the main point that DDR5 builds in general are still priced relatively high for their performance. (It's a good performance increase, but an even bigger price increase), and if you're going to pay this much for a modern system you should think of it as an investment into being able to upgrade more smoothly further down the road, since AM4 is at the end of the line and there won't be options for faster CPUs, SSDs or RAM coming out in the future for AM4/DDR4 systems.

So imho better to skip it altogether as it's not very good investment in future, I'd buy the fastest AM4 build instead, by doing this you save money for a better GPU = better perf in all games basically (be it 1080p or 4k). If performance is not enough in future you can still buy faster GPU and re-use it in your newer build. AM5 is not worth it simply for games - PCIe 4 is not utilized fully, hell even gen 3 is not being utilized to full potential today. And if you are gaming at 4k it will be only GPU dependant. Games were and still are mainly GPU bound, faster CPU/RAM can benefit you only in specific cases (1080p, competitive games) where faster GPU benefits you always. Or for the saved money you can buy better monitor, mouse, audio, chair etc. And in 4 years buy AM6/Intel new platform which will be heck lot faster and better and much more mature (no bugs, frying chips, memory training issues etc.).

No. 7800X3D allows me to upgrade my GPU later to the 6080 or 7080 without having to upgrade my CPU at the same time. It also allows me to use FSR/DLSS when games get to GPU demanding. If I went with a 5800X3D, FSR/DLSS stresses the CPU more and therefore may have little to no effect on future games. The 7800X3D also allows me an upgrade path, 5800X3D does not

Nobody really needs more the 60 FPS and that frame rate can be feed to graphic cards even by an i5 12400 or an AMD 5600.
People prefer to crank up details and resolution anyway then run a game at 1080p at medium detail for insane refresh rates and modern GPU are generally the limiting factor. Having DDR5 over DDR4 for the current CPU really don't brings enough to justify throwing money at it, unless the prices are very similar.
Unless someone upgrades CPU every year, in which case AMD is the only way, and I would question the price/performance value of that, by the time we'll really need a new CPU, DDR6 or 7 will be a thing and DDR5 will be extremely cheap, especially in larger size, which now are almost unaffordable.

What wouldn’t really make sense would be someone building their first system today and going with AM4. If you’re very constrained budget-wise, it’s an option. The AM5 compatible components are still pretty expensive so building a new AM5 system is going to be pricey.
I know “future proofing” isn’t really possible, at least not long term future proofing but AM4 is essentially a dead socket. There won’t be any new motherboards or CPU’s made with AM4 sockets so you’re limited to whatever currently exists. That can mean aggressive discounts so if you want to build a very capable AM4 system, it’s totally possible and will definitely be cheaper than AM5. It would just suck to spend all of that money knowing that the only thing you’d be able to carry on to your next build would be the GPU, the case and the storage. CPU, motherboard and memory will all have to be bought new. There isn’t much of an upgrade path for a newly built AM4 machine.
Part of this whole PC gaming thing includes having to eventually bite the bullet and build an entirely new system when socket generations end and stop receiving support. If you want to board that plane early, expect to pay the first class prices. It sucks but it’s how it goes.

A few arguments to consider too when building a new system instead of upgrading:
AM4 is EOL, AM5 just started, with a bit of luck you can update in the future with going for the 7800X3D route
DDR5 is going to perform better going forward when upgrading graphics card later in the future, you have to keep them fed with data somehow as they get faster.
Generally more PCI-e lanes on AM5 chipsets and CPUs across the board, useful with the move to NVME drives.
Nothing is a good enough reason to consider when merely upgrading existing systems though. With that being said I went from a 5800X3D to a 7800X3D but I am crazy. :D

Beyond that, the whole premise of the video is the relative value of the chips, and none of the pricing info is at all relevant anymore so you can't even make the same comparison he makes here.
The 5800x3d is still $300 but the 7800x3d is down to $350, the cheapest AM4 and AM5 itx boards are now $100 and $140 respectively, and the DDR4 kit in the video is down to $57 while a comparable value kit of DDR5 is $78, all based on micro center pricing.
All together, the price difference between the two setups in the video has fallen from $380 to $111, which actually feels perfectly fine when you consider that all of the components in the AM5 set up will be forward compatible while none of the components from the AM4 system will be.

you don't understand that what you're asking for won't inform you of anything.
i'll explain~ FPS is a result of a combination of GPU/RAM/HD or SSD/and CPU. When you test component performance you need to "control" for "variables" in your testing. so if you want to benchmark a cpu you need to do it with a test that DOESN'T test the GPU/RAM/HD or SSD. in short, you need to find a test where the performance of those other 3 variables is uniform, predictable, and does NOT impact overall performance, and does NOT cap the upper or lower limits of your CPU test results. Following me so far?
The problem you run into is while you can control pretty easily for RAM and storage, you'll notice that graphic cards are generally the bottleneck in most games/benchmarks. This means in order to accurately test the speed/ability of a cpu you need to bench it in a situation the graphics card is NOT functioning as a bottleneck.
The easiest way to do this is to bench a game in low 720p or 1080p resolution, as the higher the resolution the more likely all you'll be benching is the graphics card.
How do i know this? because whenever you look at a FPS performance graph with 1 gpu, and many CPUs being tested, and the graph is a flat line of performance, say every cpu is showing 70FPS at 4k, then you know that what you're really seeing is the graphic card's max performance. in order to view which cpu actually is better than the others you need to see them in a situation the graphics card and other parts aren't impacting the performance.
Which is why most game benches for CPUs are in 720p/1080p, and most gpu benchmarking is done in 1440p or 4k

The issue with your argument here, is that we don't just buy a CPU to play games today. We buy a CPU to play games multiple years from now. And most people don't only have one graphics card paired with the same CPU, people tend to upgrade their graphics card. The whole point of using a graphics card like a 4090, is because in a few few generations, mid-range cards will perform like a 4090. At which point, the level of performance you are getting will become more CPU limited.
Additionally, the cross-gen period is coming to an end. We are going from the very slow Jaguar cores in 8th gen as the baseline, to the Zen 2 based CPU's in 9th gen. We're already seeing games capped at 30fps due to CPU limitations. (For example, Starfield.) CPU requirements on PC, especially if you want to keep targeting 60fps or higher, will go up significantly. And I would imagine memory bandwidth requirements going up as well.
Then there's the power efficiency difference. This thing is only hitting 40W usage in Battlefield 2042 at 120fps+. I've seen no benchmark of it going more than just a bit above 60W.
That's why investing in AM5 now over AM4 makes a lot more sense IMO. Of course, if someone is already on AM4, then getting a 5800X3D makes more sense.

@@itsJPhere I don't think that necessary makes sense to me, if my budget can allow AM5 now! Let's say I spend €800 on AM4 now (i have slower performance), then I spend €800 on AM5 in say 3/4 years, when it to is at it's end of life. I'll still have lower performance to whats available at the time I upgrade. So, total spend €1600 over say 6/7 years! On the other hand, I spend €1000 now on AM5 now and I have higher performance now! In, say 3/4 years, i buy new faster AM5 CPU at say €400, total spend €1400! and better performance over the entire lifespan! After say 6/7/8 years it's time to invest in a new platform either way, that's true, but if I got AM4 and later AM5 at end of life I wouldn't have had the same performance over the lifespan! I suppose we all have our strategies, and all are valid to each of us personally, but mine has always been not to buy the the newest top tier thing, but certainly to buy the platform with the longer lifespan, and then upgrade just the CPU later. Of course not factoring GPUs in to this, that's a whole other can of worms. And personal budget will always be the real factor, unless you're a lucky rich so and so.

The real reason why the 7800X3D is honestly a bad buy is because its barely faster than its competitors while also being a nearly $500 on an 8 core in 2023. If you already have AM4 the 5800X3D is a no brainer, but building new, you can get a 14 core(6p+8e), 20 thread chip that murders it in productivity and total system management and is within 10 percentage points of a 7800X3D’s performance while costing around as much as a 5800X3D. Nevermind the 13700K that has 2 more p cores and 4 more threads thats within 5 percent or less performance wise of a 7800X3D in gaming while being somewhere between a 7900X and 7950X in performance and costing the same as a 7800X3D or a lot of times cheaper at around $390. Hell even the price drop of the 7950X has it stepping on the 7800X3D’s toes and while its slower in gaming it IS a better CPU overall. I just dont nearly $500 plus tax is justifiable for a predominately gaming CPU that is highly lacking in everything else for its price range. And yet these are the same people that probably were talking a lot of trash back when the 9900K was nearly $500 at a time. Mind you, at a time when the 9900K was a LOT faster than anything else on the market and it wasnt even close. Even then i think the complaints were pretty well justified, but now with another nearly $500 8 core that actually has extremely stiff competition and a core deficit for its price range, the same people are quiet

For many titles if you load up the GPU enough the CPU is practically asleep, there are exceptions but you really need to look at your individual use cases. In this particular scenario, yes those CPUs are completely useless, they do absolutely nothing that you are actually going to notice playing these games. That doesn't mean there's no reason for them to exist, they are good in other scenarios and they will run future titles better, of course if you upgrade on the regular this is also irrelevant, but right here, right now, in these games: pointless.

This is just an opinion, but I think this is sort of bad advice. If you're in for an upgrade, it's always better to push toward a newer platform if possible because of the life of the socket. Am4 supported Zen 2 all the way through the end of Zen 3... That's a 6 year life cycle on the same board... If AMD rides the AM5 socket for as long or longer than they did the AM4 socket, you're looking at 2 upgrades on the same board. You get the initial upgrade to the Am5 platform, and then you will get one more toward the end of its life. I think what you're saying is great for people who adopted AM4 early. But if they already own a later version chip, such as a Zen 3 for an example, and are looking for an upgrade, I think the additional cash for the push to AM5 is worth it, solely for the overall lifespan of the system. 5 years from now the zen 4 and Am4 socket will slowly be pushed to the backburner for more powerful AM5 chips later, and that's where the change to Am5 makes the most difference, YOu won't have to buy all new components to just change CPU's if you wish to do so on newer Zen4 chips, or even Zen 5 later down the road. While I agree that going with the 5800x3d would have been more cost effective for you right now, it wouldn't have been over an extended amount of time. Price versus cost. The price of it might be low, but how much is it going to cost you over the lifespan of the chip?

Sure AM4 / DDR4 / 5800X3D is pretty solid currently put it's not like AM5 / DDR5 / 7000 series CPU's aren't likely to have a bigger advantage going forward so it's not somehow irrational to spend a bit more money now to build a system that is solid for many years to come. Sure, $400-$500 is a lot of money for most people but when you are talking about holding on to a PC for several years in the grand scheme of things it's really not that unreasonable of an investment.
Personally, seeing as I use my PC for more than JUST "gaming" I went with the 12-core Ryzen 9 7900X which is just as good as the 7950X as well as the 5800X3D (varies a bit from game to game) at gaming while being more than capable (I don't run a business where time is so critical hence the reason I didn't get a 7950X) in non-gaming work-loads for $425 USD. Plenty of folks "game" as well as use their PC for other more CPU "core" intensive" task.
Sure the 12-core 7900X loses to the 8 core 7800X3D in certain games generally when I'm already getting like 200+FPS @1440p on my 2K -240hz monitor / RTX 4090 but the difference between getting say 200FPS vs. 220FPS is a non-issue for me personally seeing as I don't game for a living and 12 cores is very useful outside of JUST "gaming" so paying less $425 for a 12 core 7900X vs. $450 for an 8 core 7800X3D makes a lot more sense.
So if you want a CPU that is great OVERALL (Gaming + Production, etc..) the 12 core Ryzen 9 7900X at $425 is certainly one of the best deals currently. Yeah it cost more to "get in" but it's not like there are no advantages to this. Resist the "crack high" of the "current thing" mentality (meaning how it matches up TODAY only) - it WILL come back to bite you in the ass later more often than not.
Anyways, the RTX 4090 believe it or not isn't somehow "too powerful" for 1440p - It's not JUST a "4K card" as many seem to suggest. With maxed out settings + Ray tracing, etc. 1440p is more than enough to utilize the RTX 4090 while achieving far superior frame rates vs. the same settings at 4K. Personally I'd take 1440p@ 90+FPS over 4K / 60FPS any day of the week. I have both a 1440p - 240hz IPS monitor as well as a 4K -120hz - OLED - VRR LG TV - 1440p - 240hz is my preference overall with my RTX 4090 - Ryzen 9 7900X - 32GB DDR5 6000Mhz/ 30CL system.
There's also the scenario of much faster paced FPS games (240FPS+) where running at 1440p makes more sense vs. running at 4K with an RTX 4090 - This isn't just a "4K card" and this will continue to make itself more apparent in the years ahead. Overall I think the RTX 4090 is best for people who want to play the most demanding games at 1440p/90FPS+ at MAX settings w/ ray tracing and so on. I think the same will be mostly true with the RTX 4080 as well but probably not at "MAX" settings and lower FPS and to a lesser extent the RTX 4070Ti game dependent of course.
