Because that wasn't the subject. It's also not a given that all libertarians support abortion. In order to support abortion AND individual rights you have to assume that the pre-born are not individuals. That's not a political question. Whatever the answer is it cannot be found in politics. For lack of an answer the present situation is you either believe the pre-born are not people and can therefore be scraped out, or you DO believe they're people and either have the right to live or (in some cases) you believe it's still okay to kill them. One thing you CANNOT be is a libertarian who believes the pre-born are people AND subject to arbitrary execution at the whim of others.) Nor do you have to be religious to watch Fox News. And a particularly nasty, hate-fueled one at that. It's also not a given that religion and libertarianism are incompatible. The subject at hand was libertarianism. Being a libertarian means your true god is INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY, even when people use that liberty to do things you personally think are childish and silly. I'd die for your right to worship Sky Daddy. Jefferson and Adams mocked the whole idea of Christianity and organized religion in general in their personal correspondence, but were obviously prepared to give their lives for the right of Christians to believe and worship as they chose. WHAT you do with your liberty is not important to a libertarian. The fact that you HAVE liberty is all that's important. Doug also jokes about a$$-f*cking. A LOT. Is Fox News not a real news outlet because they didn't broach that subject with Doug? Not everything Doug says is about libertarianism. In fact, it's a fairly small part of his act over the years.
@@mqbitsko25 For starters, Doug Stanhope is pro-choice. Many of the same "pro-life" people are also pro-war, pro-death penalty, and anti-social services. Once that baby is born, they lose interest. You may not be religious, but you are aligning yourself with nitwits who think that Planet Earth less than 6000 years old and was completely covered by a flood less than 4400 years ago.
Stossel is a libertarian. He always asks questions as if coming from the anti-libertarian viewpoint because he wants his guests to articulate their libertarian views.
David Kramer I know less than nothing about Stossel, but that interview style works best (imo) for revealing a person's honest views on a matter, and how strongly they hold those views. David Feldman, another comedian, and podcaster, uses the same approach. Of course, with Stanhope you know that the answers are always completely honest, which makes most the talking heads terrified, and real people love him, or at the very least appreciate him..
On the left... We have a human. On the right, a mindless puppet . There's more truth, honesty and heart in a single Stanhope bit than the news will ever share.
It is hilarious that Doug actually did have punchlines for the assisted suicide stuff, but the statute of limitations wasn't up yet, so he couldn't tell them =p
When I was young a cop pulled me over, I don't remember why, I didn't get a ticket....Point is, he told me, frankly, that the seatbelt law was actually for the cost savings and convenience of keeping most of the body in the car when a fatality occurs... I believe he used the phrase "So we don't have to hunt the highway for pieces..."
And that's exaclty the point Doug Makes...what do you own if not your own body? Of course the law is there but it's just fucking stupid because we gave them that power...
A birth certificate is simply a record of where and when you were born and who you were born to. It doesn't say that the state owns you, it only proves to the state that you exist.
Considering that libertarian used to mean classical left wing anarchism I don't think libertarians have much room to talk when it comes to "stealing" terms. Most political terms are broad, sweeping and largely meaningless.
I really am impressed with the job they did on editing Doug's routine. It got most of his points across, and the areas that it didn't (the marriage portion,) Doug filled in the blanks. I highly doubt anyone watching this took him seriously, but at least he got some air time to voice his stances. Many people don't even get that much....

+NomTheFood Naaa he's right, there's really no such thing. How the fuck can you be libertarian if you support government with strong fiscal control? Don't believe every picture on the Internet.
The original libertarians were against authority, including in the workplace, which means they were against capitalism. Google it before you say I'm wrong.
Its funny, Im not a Libertarian at all, I am conservative in alot of my political beliefs, I disagree with most of his beliefs but I JUST LOVE Doug Stanhope, I love his honesty and courage even though i dont support his political beliefs!!
I've always liked Stossel, before I even gave a shit about politics, he just seemed genuine. Too bad a lot of people see "Fox" and make up their minds off that. Cool vid.
I am Libertarian. The thing is, I don't see it as a party. It's just part of my identity. It's not a club for the rich because rich people don't want libertarians, they want to create libertarian parties and trick people into supporting them. Libertarians are against corporate welfare. Corporations love government money and protectionism of their monopolies. Libertarians want corporations to fend for themselves and not give money to politicians in exchange of legislation that supports business.
No Stossel. They do not want a government to tell them what to do. They want a government which does what the people tell them to do. Stop running errands for the ultrarich.
I don't understand why Stanhope is on Stossel other than for exposure which is fine. That being said I can't believe Stanhope doesn't think Stossel is a douche. Can't see these two drinking a beer together.
Agreed. Dennis Miller should have never ventured into the political arena without first examining and then adhering to virtuous, personal principles of consistency and reason.
I may slap the next person who says "It's a free country." For one thing it's NOT. But beyond that "freedom" is not rare or precious. It's UNIVERSAL. Every human being on the planet is free to do what his government allows. What's the difference between an American and a North Korean? We have a later bedtime than they do. Mommy lets us stay up until 10. They're in bed by 9. That's it. That is the ONLY difference. Both are "free." LIBERTY is rare and precious. LIBERTY is the right to do what your government lacks the authority or the power to stop no matter how it feels about it. LIBERTY is what the Constitution tried to enshrine, but we literally never gave it a chance. We looked at it, high-fived each other, then buried it. Literally.
The interview was a little bit awkward but they're both libertarians who support maximum freedom when you get down to it. The intention behind this interview was all good.
It's too bad John didn't spend time with Doug Stanhope. One of his most endearing and popular pieces is about Sarah Palin and shows the man's sensitivity and political acumen. Hopefully the folks in attendance got to see this side of the gentleman and hopefully you viewers will look for some of Doug's "softer side" routines... Spike Murdock, Poet-at-Large
I havent watched much Stossel, but it strongly appeared to me that Stossel was making those arguments as a devils advocate and to test Doug, not that those arguments expressed his personal opinion.
Problem with mixing comedy and politics is, it only works 1 way. You can make comedy out of politics but the other way round makes you look dumb and naive.
More people with opened minds should hear this man's take on the obvious and spread his words..I find myself quoting Doug daily and if questioned I always place credit where it is due right on top of Stanhope's brilliant bald pointy little head...PeaceOrElse
I believe most people would still wear seatbelts, perhaps even more people with simply an education campaign without tickets. It's really not that big of a deal and if person x abandons family he would still be responsible for the children abandoned I presume. Also if we want more marriage, we really should allow gays to be married. I am not a Libertarian, but I am a freethinker, unlike most Libertarians.
The fact that Stanhope made Stossel look like such an imbecile is not surprising in any way; the fact that he did so so effortlessly should give us all reason to pause, and be a little disturbed by the pathetic state of television hosts, and how absurdly ineffective they are. Stanhope appeared to be sitting there as though he knew that it was necessary to be patient as though he were dealing with a mentally slow child.
I love Doug, but even he looks a little baffled to be interviewed in such a serious setting on his comedy. I guess this is more proof that stand up comedy is the last stand of real truth.
As much as I dig Stanhope, I prefer watching Stossel getting the shit slapped out of him by Dr D, it's almost as funny as Hogan putting Beltzer out while Mr T tells the audience "It's okay...He's just sleeping."
@YesWeCantaloupe Of course it's good. But again, if it leads to overfishing then there will be trouble in future. This hunt for infinite GPD growth is not possible with finite resources.

Though I agree with you that the CURRENT political parties in the USA are no good, I don't think eliminating the political system completely is a good idea. People come together and form parties and put out candidates that are meant to help/guide(the ones today don't do a good job obviously). A REFORM of the political party system would be better since we need some someone/a group (at least at this point) to make decisions about which way the nation should go...

It is convenient for Fox News to not play any clips of Doug blasting religion and pro-lifers.

stossel realized he wasnt a libertarian after talking to doug...

And a helmet is a brain bucket
you don't own your own body, its called a birth certificate. Registered to the state. you're owned.
Further proof that Doug has a valid point. Government shouldn't be involved.
And that's exaclty the point Doug Makes...what do you own if not your own body? Of course the law is there but it's just fucking stupid because we gave them that power...
he pointed that out
A birth certificate is simply a record of where and when you were born and who you were born to. It doesn't say that the state owns you, it only proves to the state that you exist.
Okay, I know Stanhope registers libertarian, but if you listen to him long enough, he comes off as more of an anarchist.

Quite an accomplishment by Stossel, he even managed to make Stanhope uninteresting

Love Doug. Last bastion of sanity in this insane world.
A surprisingly good interview for FOX òϿ
surprising good I also thought- well posted.

Fuck I love Stanhope, if I was gay, Bringo would have a problem !
Doug Stanhope seems to be more left libertarian than right libertarian considering some of his stand up material
good

At times the laughter sounds to me like that of an artificial laugh track...
I've always liked Stossel, before I even gave a shit about politics, he just seemed genuine. Too bad a lot of people see "Fox" and make up their minds off that. Cool vid.
Stossel has always been relatively decent. Also, usually so calm.
i agree, theres just so much crazy in fox news that ppl avoid it entirely
We totally get Doug here in England...and we want more!
yes we do !!

"You own your own meat."
expolited by FOX, I am more liberal than you could comprehend and Doug is my hero!!!
At some point Stossel realizes that he is being had but it took awhile for the light to come on…..now that's entertainment.
I wish Stanhope would have talked about Sara Palin's youngest kid and what it did to her body
I was at that show in Seattle! Thanks for the nostalgia!

This John Stossel guy must be a riot at all the parties. What a tool.
the last few seconds are like the coyote running out and looking down, realizing he's gonna fall.
Doug Stanhope and Bill Burr, the ONLY two comedians I'll watch and listen to anymore.
This was the first time I saw Doug sober.
"Fighting the frizzies at eleven"
Well, that was... awkward. We love you Doug.

Who asks for it? Isn't there money involved in that too?

it's easy to dismantle Stanhope but he's still hilarious
Go ahead.
doug was so sober!
They totally left out the point of the marriage skit. The actual real point of marriage is for money sharing, splitting, taxing, etc.
Was very lucky to get front row seats in Athens Ga to watch Doug go off on whats wrong with our lives.
Agreed. Dennis Miller should have never ventured into the political arena without first examining and then adhering to virtuous, personal principles of consistency and reason.
I love me some Doug Stanhope!!!!!!!
"thanks to John Ashcroft, you sick Bible attic!"
Of course Fox isn't going to air his views on the pledge of allegiance, abortion, work, religion or nationalism.
Wow.
That's the first time I've actually seen a piece of wood talk.
I don't think Stossel expected Stanhope to be so much better than him at this haha.

There's definitely some suppressed emotion from Doug at the end. Looks like he might start crying.
Doug Stanhope for pres 2014
Doug should run for something! I'm sure he's on "We The People" side!
This seems like the only serious interview he actually gave a shit about.

handfasting was the old way of marriage, only needed one witness, who could be anyone, no clergy
Seems like Stanhope is more of a left-leaning civil libertarian, and Stossel is more of a quasi-conservative pro-business libertarian.
Don't worry about it. They don't like my name either

John Stossel's terribly inert as a host in this. At least Stanhope was there to try and keep it real.

When was this Stanhope episode first televised, what year?
