- Q&A with a comedian who has entertained audiences with his bad taste and unapologetically libertarian tirades for nearly 30 years.

_________
No comedian is as idiosyncratic and outspoken about their politics and their habits as Doug Stanhope, who dresses exclusively in Goodwill castoffs and has written irresistibly weird and readable books about everything from helping his terminally ill mother commit suicide to celebrating the on-the-road debauchery that ended in his getting happily married.
Stanhope has entertained audiences with his bad taste and unapologetically libertarian tirades for nearly 30 years. In the early 2000s, he cohosted The Man Show with Joe Rogan, including an episode where he entered a boxing ring against disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding and took a bit of a beating.
Reason caught up with Stanhope at FreedomFest, an annual event held this year in Memphis, where he performed a characteristically uncensored set that had the audience alternately groaning and laughing. We talked about why he's dreading the presidential election season, how he survived COVID's effect on touring, what he likes about psychedelics, and why he prefers creative independence over mainstream acceptance.
Stanhope is one of the best stand ups ever.
He's the best alive
right up there with carlin, bruce, pryor, hicks, and dave chappelle earned his place there as well. just waiting on bill burr to have one more outstanding moment ane he's easily there as well.
@@chadpaulsen2953burrs done
@@chadpaulsen2953 you forgot Louis CK, Patrice o Neal
@@chadpaulsen2953really? You rate him up there with them? Can you recommend his best work?
"Im not famous enough to know if I've been canceled." LOL
Stanhope always seems to lay low and you don't know what he's up to then out of nowhere you see him pop up somewhere. Glad he's still an hilarious malcontent.
malcontent is the word to describe him

Doug Stanhope has been one of my favorite comics since I first saw one of his specials in the early 2000s. He's the reason I know where Bisbee is.
In 1977, I gave a German hippie looking guy a ride. He was going to Bisbee. So its been a cult thing for a long time. I have never been.
@@eddenoy321this is my favorite story of today ❤
Stanhope in the mid 2000s produced 3 of the best comedy albums I’ve ever heard. Anyone that likes great comedy should go dig them up
True but I think Beer Hall Putsch was his pinnacle.
Deadbeat is one of the GoaTs.
Deadbeat Hero & No Refunds & Beer Hall Putsch are pure masterpieces, I wish there was video from 'Something to take the edge off', that album is genius. Word Of Mouth is pretty epic for its day as well.
I love the way that Doug respects originality and artistic freedom. I wish it was more commonplace.
I wish it was more commonplace because because people are so boring.

Lou Reed's brother asks good questions.
Doug is the last bastion of sanity in this insane world and my favorite fellow curmudgeon. Thanks Doug for all the great advice, deep thoughts and especially all the belly laughs.
Well, there are one or two others, but he's my favourite.
Chappell and Burr are geniuses for sure but Doug is the comedian I love most.
If you pointed a gun to my head. I couldn’t think of 5 Bill Burr jokes to save my life.
I’d make up 5 banger jokes about how I was about to die. Before I guessed 1.
All three are capable of interesting story telling.
For me Burr is the only one to abandon their foundation, completely changing fan base. I don't hold it against him or saying it's not funny, rather it's not for me.
Fuken LOVE Burr, Stanhope, Kevin Hart, Louis CK, Segura... But Chapelle just doesn't do anything for me, never has. No disrespect, but I've never understood his overwhelming appeal.
agreed, but D. Tosh's stone-cold style (also a friend of doug) will also be there, I mean fucking in the shower, until someone flushes the terlet and spoils the party for us all.
@@supermarioisacat You have an amazing ability to be exactly wrong about everything.
The interviewer should have avoided stopping Doug constantly while he was still finishing a thought
Feels very rushed fs
i think it was prob just edited and he wasn't interrupting him in person
Stanhope is one of my favorite comedians.
He's the comedian...
🐐
Just one of? A man goes around in strange suits raving about the injustice of our mediocre world for years and he doesn't get a podium finish? Is he top 10? If you get taken on stage at a concert by the headliner, do you say into the microphone 'this is one of my favorite bands'? :D
frt, he's one of my favorites.
@@cosmicmuffet1053 lmao, he's in my top 5 easy. can't give him a podium finish as those spots are reserved for Carlin, Chappelle, and Pryor.
I worked at the Funny Bone in the 90s. Doug was our headliner one week and we were hanging out with him after the show, as you do when you work at a comedy club. When it was time to go back to his hotel he walked over to the horrible painting of Yakov Smirnoff, took it down, stuck it under his arm and walked out with it. It was hilarious. I wonder if he still has it?
My favorite all time comic. I respect how fearless he is.

Doug was born in 1967 and Nick Gillespie was born in 1963.
Nick is just 4 years older than Doug, and he's acting like "I'm from a different gEneRaTion than you" and "This was probably before your time".
You're basically the same age buddy. Chill.
Nick is trying too hard.
…I mean what’s up with the leather jacket indoors…in the summer…during a heatwave.
It's because he 's so cool and it makes him look like he actually has shoulders. Maybe he could wash his hair AND get the hair cut of an ADULT, not a 14 yr old.
I LOVE DOUG STANHOPE. I HAVE LISTENED TO HIS BOOK AT LEAST 5 TIMES - ANY TIME IN LIFE WHEN IM FED UP WITH EVERYTHING I LISTEN TO THAT BOOK AND IT MAKES ME FEEL HUMAN AGAIN. I CANT STOP YELLING.
I have the same question as above
LOUD NOISES
Have you tried reading it?
Got a chance to meet him before a show in Orlando, and he was so damned cool. Really friendly and grateful to be there. Wasn’t at all what I expected. Love Doug!!!
That's good to know.
I have never heard of him so I will have to check some of his comedy out.
@@serpentines6356lol hope no subject is off limits for you lol he’s dark but his material has a soul and heart underneath the chaos
I met him after an Amsterdam show and he sent a lovely reply to an email I sent.
Will always have a spot in my heart! ❤
Stanhopes a real renegade. Theres no one else like him
“I was pretty young then back when I was born”. 😂😀
Love Stanhope! Brilliant, one of a kind, makes me smile.
Stanhope is a living legend. Unfortunately he won't be recognized and acknowledged for his genius until after he is already gone. If u have the chance to give
him his flowers now, don't hesitate.
he would rip on you for saying that and I would laugh!
@@russpoore8997 he wouldn’t rip on me. He would ignore me, and simultaneously shush me and talk over me pretending not to hear a word of what I said. And he would half laugh and then say something like “this is exactly why we quit inviting rando people to the house, all they ever do is act like peeping Tom’s and then when I finally have to walk out there to the gate and tell them to go to the Shady Dell, they only have two default modes. they either get all tongue tied, or they get all gushy…shit, I’d tie my own tongue if it meant I never had to hear someone profusely compliment me ever again. Tracy, cocktail!”
Flowers? You mean mushrooms 🍄 😅😅😅
Doug, norm, Bill but, Dave attel, are the kind pure comics I love. Many of the greats made the turn. They hit this point in their career where instead of commenting on the world, the start prescribing how it should be. Cosby, Carlin, Bruce, Williams, and now even Chappelle transitioned to "public intellectuals" and it's a shame. We got plenty of people out there telling us about the world of shit we are in, but there are very few guaranteed laughs to be had. God bless Doug. 👍
Agreed and it sucks that most up and coming comics now use that as a blueprint to build and keep their audience. I'm not sure exactly how it started or who to blame but I think it's fair to say there have been enough comedy podcasts about wokeness. Norm's weekend update in the OJ era, now that's how you talk about current events 🤣
Lewis Black started doing the political crap. I was so mad when I paid to see his show and it was all change the world crap. I paid to hear him say FVCK at least 50 times and he failed to deliver 🤬
I agree with you mostly but I don't believe Carlin ever jumped the shark as his observations of the absurd started to focus on the larger organizations of people as they became more absurd and extreme, religion, politicians and the culture of consumerism. Williams was always very sad inside and the world outside seemed like it was getting too harsh for him to stick around which sucks because he was so gentle and kind and we needed more not less people like him. 😥
@@1ManNamedDan Yeah you are prolly right there, I was prolly just being a usual hyperbolic internet version of me. I love all these folks, full stop. Comedians are the people who I most feel like writing thank you notes too. I love me some music, and movies, but a good 2 min bit can literally right the ship for me mentally pretty much no matter what is going on. With Carlin sometimes I think the reason I tend to be harsh on him is that he is so sorely missed. Everytime I see some old stuff of his it just illustrates how much we could use a guy like him in the world these days. :D Good lookin out.
@@cluistube I feel the same as you about how a well crafted thought can lift the spirits in comedy music and on the screen. I've tried my hand at stand up and will probably try again because i've suffered and I want to make a crowd uncomfortable because that amuses me. Keep it light amigo.
This guy is one of the greats. He's so underrated. Never get tired of listening to the way his mind works.
"So underrated"? Supercilious nonsense. I like him, you like him, the rest can go to hell.
Nick had me laugh with good questions "what fuels your apathy" lol
"Where do you get your ideas from?"
He should've said, "I don't care."
He's not apathetic; he's insightful and sentimental.
Yo! I just commented on this. I smiled. It's a good jab. Stanhope rolled over it like a mac truk 🚛 fucking legend.
Fonzi said Doug is too young to know about the son of sam? First, Doug IS old enough to know about it. Second, how's this sound? "You're probably too young to know about Hitler." Do you have to be alive during an era to know about it? Doug is a legend and shouldn't have to suffer awful interviewers.
He was such an insufferable stiff. The way he kept trying to categorize Doug as Libertarian was embarrassing. How is someone so painfully unfunny and lacking in charisma gonna interview a comedy legend like Stanhope?
The joke Nick referenced at 41:35 was Bill Hicks, not Mitch Hedberg
Doug is my spirit animal!
Doug is a peoples comic - after his set, he hung with about a dozen of us, did another 20 minutes in the lounge for us and offered all kinds of insight in the standup workd
His new special should be called "Defeated"
I flew to London to see him live in 2010, thinking he had a couple of years left in his life before drinking himself to death. Can you imagine my disappointment hearing his health is better than mine all these years later. (Joke, calm your tits.)
He's very honest for being a libertarian, I would guess a few of the down votes here are from Trumpers being angry that he seems more negative about him than Biden. I've also seen him express doubt about libertarianism working before, I think there is more leftism than rightism in him, especially talking about Hicks etc.
Most intelligent people are swerving both sides of the road. Because it’s the only sane way to be. Making everyone and everything political and jumping to judgment over one belief and assuming the rest has gotten old and tired. It’s obtuse.
These days the endless political hammering comes from the left as far cities, schools, sports teams, New Years fireworks, even candies pushing the lgbt/trans flag, blm agendas, etc.
Before, most schools, sports, fireworks, candy companies didn't push a political agenda.
Unfortunately, it's everywhere now.
Ugh!
I don’t mind people running down Trump. He’s a clown. But the people trying to take him out are much more dangerous because they actually understand the system and how to use it to establish dominance. Trump just goofs around and accomplishes nothing of significance-either for good or for ill.
It always feels like I'm being sold a used car on this channel
Whatever you do,don't look under the bonnet.
Hood,if you're American,sorry.
I mean I'm not sorry if you're American...
That was a memorable episode of Louis. Doug played a talented but failed comedian wallowing in his anger rather than harnessing it the way Hicks, Stanhope, and others did. The ending is left up in the air.
It was yeah. Dark as shit, almost to the point of being maybe darkest shit they've both ever done.
I think you misunderstood most of that character.
The ending wasn't left up in the air, at all, it was pretty final, pun intended
i just realized robin williams being inspired by doug in that episode, is a lot like the dude from joy division who was inspired by Werner Herzog's film Stroszek. That film has the same theme of this guy who fails at life and offs himself, and that was the last thing he watched
There's a movie where he plays a similar role. The Road Dog.
Too bad Nick kept stepping on Doug's responses.
Getting a snow day really did feel like winning the lottery 🤣🤣🤣
That Footloose joke XD
A Doug Stanhope quick joke ends up being funnier than a typical mainstream comedian's special.
The older I get, the more I identify with him.
Im digging the key lime suit
He buys all his suits in Thrift Stores😂
Vacuum salesmen first suit?😅😅😅Or peppermint schnapps rep suit?
24:30 - if anyone still thinks doug's just a degenerate drunk comedian, he is, but he's also ascended to an exceptional level of humanity. the bit about helping his mom pass (with dignity and humor) is another poignant example of the quality of clinician he represents. if there is a creator, it was merciful to us all for bringing such a talent to this planet at these surprisingly retarded times.
the lesser known GOAT. The archetype of an era. The real underground road dog. Doug's the best. Good shit.
One of the best of the best comedians in the world. Norm, Burr, and Doug.
And dave and louis…top 5
Does Doug Stanhope do dark comedy? Well, one of his stand up specials is called,
"Before Turning the Gun on Himself". He's a comedian's comedian because his peers are envious of his DGAF attitude and his natural ability to swim in deep waters where they dare not wander. No Refunds was an epiphany for me, and I've been following him ever since.
His sincerity is palpable and his bits are self aware and hilarious. I think he is comfortable with his sizeable fan base and a fairly modest homestead in Bisbee. Doug Stanhope has managed to keep his integrity and success in tact.
Before turning the gun is my current favorite. The bit with the hooker talking economics had me in tears from laughing so hard.
I live down the street from Doug and he hates that he's labeled as a libertarian. He did that crap for a couple years in the 2000's and been distancing himself from it ever since.
Maybe cause many libertarians nowadays are way too much to the right than being above it and Doug doesn't like Trump. There are libertarians who actually transcend that but i can speak for my country where some dude that carries that nickname publicly is a major rw douchebag who is nothing but a hateful shill. So i guess the term got hijacked by hacks.
Last I heard Stanhope was denying he was a libertarian at all. BTW, I think Saul Goodman stole Stanhope's style.
The difference is the internet.
Doug and Patrice, best comedians of all time, glad Stanhope is still around
My two favorites!!
I've never heard of the gentleman who is interviewing Doug , but I don't think he asked even one bone-headed question during the entire time . And as a result we saw a relaxed and engaged Doug .
Still can't believe Doug Stanhope quit smoking maybe one day I will
Doug says something hilarious

Stanhope is the only comedian I've bought merch to support. Been my favorite since I first saw one of his sets in the late 2000's.

This was a nice fun interview. Great suit. Also stanhope and stanhope fans are great. Love comedy and stanhope is my fave alive comedian.
He has always bought his clothes in Thrift Stores😂
Doug is, and always will be, my favorite comedian. One of my favorite people that’s ever lived. His “No Refunds” special changed my life. So many of his jokes, thoughts, and feelings in that special were exactly what parallelled mine at the time. It was uncanny. Yet I was not hearing anyone else say these things anywhere else. I fucking hate most celebrities. They’re worthless, spineless shills. But Doug is always Doug. He’s always been a kindred soul to me. I found out years later that he grew up fifteen miles from me in my birth place and first home, Worcester, MA. I practically grew up in Worcester. It breeds that type of people. 😂
"What's fueling your apathy?" is near accusatory and he couldn't care less, Stanhope is a Legend.
Credit to the interviewer as well - Always nice to see a comedian have genuine laughs themselves.
Saw him in Milton Keynes about ten years ago. Best stand-up ever.
Introducing the host of the 2024 Grammy Awards, Doug “Music is Rape” Stanhope!

_The Righteous Gemstones_ would be a show Doug might enjoy.
'I was pretty young back then, when I was born'. Classic.
Stanhope is therapeutic.
Absolutely my favorite comedian of all time. I met him years ago at a small club, and he was exactly like he is here. Beyond down to Earth. It's so cool when our various heros are what we hope them to be. Great man.
He changed, but then I though, he has always been changing.
He doesn't say all the words he thinks and is trying to say, like a bad cell phone connection, fill in the skipped words.
Surfing comedy zone website and lo n behold, Stanhope, one night only, last September. I couldn’t order two tickets quick enough. I hadn’t been so excited for anything in YEARS, as I was to see one of my favorite comedians live. What a legend and he killed, of course. Hope to catch him again before one of us lies in a box

50/50 odds of him inviting you in for a drink
Great intterview! You're the best Doug!
The loose relaxed tone of this is great.
Great interview and questions hopefully done again in a couple years with drastically different questions for varieties sake.
I love Doug so hard. Got to hangout with him once in flagstaff. I can't believe he didn't snap on this dude interrupting him constantly. Why ask the dude questions if you're going to talk through his answers?! Dear lord!
Sounds like he quit smoking!
Congrats!
Greatest living comedian!
I’m new to Stanhope and love him - nothing under the table. Very risky territory for a comedian and Doug plows right through and he’s solid. We need honest comics not muzzled right now. PC screamers shouldn’t attend comedy shows…Respect.
Doug Stanhope....The Patron Saint of Brisbee!😅
Doug put Brisbee on the map.
It starts with Stanhope’s “Fishing License” bit which is one of the most insightful commentaries on what “The Land of The Free and Home of The Brave” landscape has deteriorated into.
@41:24 Interviewer assigns a Bill Hicks LSD joke to Mitch Hedberg.
Fan since the Wise Acres Bootleg.
I agree, Stanhope is like Norm but more underground. Every comic knows him and worships him, but since he's nowhere to be seen, he just never comes up. He's Lenny Bruce reincarnated. Think about it. Lenny Bruce comes back, what would he do? He'd dissolve into obscurity after making a giant impact.
Brain Douche FTW
I love Stanhope but his last gig in Glasgow was an absolute rabble. 😂
My favorite comic!!
He is the Hunter S. Thompson of comedy.

Its because of obfuscation and lies, there is no longer any perspective available.
He's starting to sound like Gilbert Godfrey. Love stanhope
I would like to say that no president has ever affected my life but the Affordable Care Act has directly affected my life positively I went from 20 years old until I was almost 30 before I had adequate health insurance. I had one shity job that held me hostage with health insurance but that was also so overwhelming you never even had time off to go to the doctor it was so exhausting.
He’s the best, that guy!
Doug Stanhope is underrated and arguably my biggest influence as a comic.
