People don't like to register that their existence *necessitates* the suffering of other living things. You could be the most eco-friendly hippy out there; your living space, food, and power still comes at the expense of the broader environment. In short, there are very few environmental problems that can't be solved by there being fewer people.
Truthiest truth of environmental protection. I've had a vasectomy and I wait for the day some breeder tries to out-eco me. One further point: a child doesn't only mean the ecological burden of one more person, but you have to account for the possible offspring of it. So if you create 2 children, that'll be one person's worth of extra weight on the globe for as long as they on average produce another ~2 children. (2 kids -> one extra string of people because the dad and the mum get one each.) And to those who might think Doug is too much, take a look at the thoughts of Pentti Linkola, a Finnish radical environmental philosopher / econazi. He basically recommends everyone just kill themselves already, and calls any war or act of terrorism a happy event.
Doug Stanhope just said what so many people believe but are too afraid to bring up in real conversations. I've lost more than a few friends by saying this exact thing. It's a shame and a detriment, not only the planet, but society as well, that this is a forbidden topic of discussion worldwide. Those who dare to bring it up are ostracized. Doug Stanhope is bravely using his platform to promote a lost cause (intelligence).
For the anti-abortion religious fanatics out there . . . your interpretation of "faith" is what is creating hell here on earth. Ever increasing populations forces the quality of life index to spiral downward for the vast majority. This is an economic metric. Even now, under and unemployment is a daunting reality facing many. This is NOT going to improve with ever increasing populations.
Well said, thank you for pointing out with humor what I've thought about people for years. If I were a comedian, this would be the type of thing I'd say.
People respond that we could just consume less and the Earth could sustain a LOT more people... but why? Is there a quota of people that we are short on? It's true enough that many developed countries are actually seeing reduced birth rates... but still positive none-the-less. So yes, you can solve the sustainability equation with more people and less consumption OR we could all enjoy our current consumption rates and solve for X the number of people where that consumption rate is sustainable. Suddenly things like over-immigration and advances in industrial automation become non-issues.
He is so right. Talking about overpopulation is one of the biggest taboos today. This is one of those moments when I'm glad we have comedians to breach those walls of discussion.
Interesting how some dunces below can't comprehand how a single baby can increase your carbon footrpint exponentially. I guess they've never heard of grandkids, or great-greatkids, or great-great-grandkids, etc.
I don't like to defend total idiots, but Stanhope is right that the government and the media combined make us intentionally ignorant on the fact that not having anymore kids to work for them as labor slaves of capitalism would be the actual only way to make sure there's still what we now think of "mother earth" in a few hundred years. At this rate, regardless of denial, there will be a soggy too hot to breath in shitty ass storm full of plastic in even a hundred years. The scene from Spaceballs of an emperor breathing his own private cans of air will seem less silly and more of a fact as the elite further protect themselves from the world they made us create.
A single baby? currently the sub-replacement level is at 2.33 children per family as a global average to replace both parents;therefore one to two children will not increase the carbon footprint as each previous generation dies off and is replaced by a new one. White western ethnic groups are currently below this level. The problem is in developing nations where more children are required due to high mortality rates. The only effective tool to curb increases in population is an increase of wealth.
In about 600 million years the CO2 levels will fall below sustainable levels needed for C3 carbon fixation photosynthesis. Meaning, if the plants die so does all life on earth, and this is not caused by humans. Even if we can avoid that, the earth is doomed to die in about 1-3 billion years anyway, and we face an natural extinction event anytime within the next 250 million years. So whats the point? Why is mother earth more important than progress? we can only escape this fate by colonizing other planets, and once we are able to do that, no one will give a rats ass about protecting environments, because the cycle of natural destruction and entropy will prevail and we would have to adapt and move on. Basically mother nature is a bitch. She kills all life and then eventually offs herself, and since the dawn of man we have tried to escape her.
Grant Green I of course accept the fact that the end of both humanity and earth are inevitable, including another million risks you did not mention. The idea that we have any place beyond the moon that will be hospitable to us before humanity is no longer is a laughable amount of optimism. The earth is our only home, the species will cease before we advance any further than a base where maybe a million of the seven billion of us get to go escape to on the moon. And then what? Enjoy the most boring life ever on a satellite where you spend most of your time thinking about things you can't do anymore. I don't even think the earth is our mother. But regardless, it is our host and it's all we'll ever know, it's the best thing available to us and all we deserve.

If anyone saw the second series of the TV show 'Utopia', I reckon that the opening sequence of the final episode was ripped off from Doug's routine here, and was just as funny because it was directed at a breeder and her son.

I remember being in 5th grade and the Earth's population was over 6 billion (around the year 2000). Now it is over 7 billion. The planet could use a break with humans.
Overpopulation isn't a problem. People are wealth. More hands = More work. More minds = More inventions. More of everything = More scientific progress, and last I checked, science and technology solve problems. If anything, we should be educating people and elevating everybody's standard of living, not contemplating each other's worth to society and measuring our relative consumptions. Fun Fact : The fastest way to depopulate a people (short of biological weapons) is to educate the women.
"Limited Resources"? Every time we run up against a supposed resource limitation, technology moves us away from it. Did you know we had worries about peak coal in the 1800s? Now coal is cheap as dirt. Oil will be the same soon. Computers are making paper obsolete. Fresh water reervoirs are unnecessary because we can make seawater potable. And "Limited Space"? Look at how many people are crammed into the tiny isle of Japan, and how much unused space there is in Canada. Farming in the state of Texas alone is sufficient to feed the world, were we to actually care about our fellow man instead of whining on youtube about how people other than you should just depopulate.
+LordDyhalto How many more fucking people do selfish, greedy folk like you want? We have approximately 7 billion people already here. That's way more than we need to make things better. Plus we live on a finite planet with equally finite resources which are slowly being eaten up. Do you not get responsibility or understand the basic fact that actions have consequences?
What, in your limited world-view, would it take to "make things better"? Like, do you believe we need to achieve some kind of fantasy utopia of equilibrium/sustainability? Or are you one of those naive folk who think the Earth is in danger because of human activity? Personally, I think "make things better" constitutes us zipping through space, exploring new solar systems and galaxies. Actually, our race is doomed if we don't because some cosmological extinction level event will make everything we've ever achieved for naught. It'll be tough, and *we're going to need a lot of minds*, but we managed to get from mere Flight to a man on the moon within 70 years of each other, so it's doable.

If anything, we should be educating people and elevating everybody's standard of living, not contemplating each other's worth to society and measuring our relative consumptions.
Fun Fact : The fastest way to depopulate a people (short of biological weapons) is to educate the women.
LordDyhalto Except your failing to take note of limited resources, limited space, eventually we're going to dry the "wells" dry.
I share your sentiment absolutely, the responses here in favor of depopulation was becoming demoralizing.
Nailed it. Awesome
Ben from work showed me this, loved it
Brilliant!! :)
Finally, someone who speaks what I've been thinking.
Thanks! Will check out this band now ;)
I love this guy. He is so funny.
I am graduating with my undergrad in May, and I started a fund for a tubal ligation for my graduation present. It's really nice that people are giving me money for something I've wanted all my life...
