I had a bunch of neons some years ago and they all died for some reason, the Cardinals are way more hardy and think their colors pop way more. Love the Cardinals!
Cardinals don’t like a lot of motion in the room outside their aquarium, and no amount of dither fish or cover will help, so they’re not ideal for little kids. But… They in groups of 20+ they are super fun to watch if you have a peaceful house.
I have hard water..the neon tetras have done very well in my water. And are the first fish I see when I walk into my home office in the morning ..love them
Live your content! I love both and especially together in a friendly community planted tank. Now a days, neons are hardier than they used to be. Cardinals used to be wild-caught only, now only captive bred mostly. Always a pleasure.
Both are terrific but I prefer the cardinals based on look alone. I have had a group of 14 in my 34 gallon for over a year now in my relatively hard water--been my hardiest fish! At the LFS's in LA they are generally $3 for neons and $4 for cardinals.
Amazing video. It's what I'm considering for my next tank. I'd love for a part 2 to this comparing the Neon to the Green Neon to the Black Neon. I'm debating between the 4 different kinds...the cardinal, green neon, black neon and normal neon....just don't know yet! It's only a regular 20 gallon, so I can only choose 1 kind. Thanks for the video!!!
Black neons are 100% the easiest to take care of and they are very outgoing compared to the rest. Cardinals are very skittish in my experience, they freakout at the slightest amount of movement in the room. Green neons are the most shy, they love to hide and not be seen and many people share this experience with them. Regular neons are great, but finding healthy stock is difficult because they are mass produced. Black neons have none of these cons, in fact they have no cons. They are outgoing, school very tight together, and if you have ever seen them in the home aquarium you'll know the name Black neon does not do them justice. They have a beautiful baby blue color to them once they settle and color up. And black neons only cost 2-3$
I love the cardinal and neon tetras, and they're hard to find in my area right now, problems with their shipments dying as soon as they come in. So I'm definitely looking for reputable and will have to order online.
Cardinals are more vibrant than neon tetras but i would choose neons because they're smaller there i can have a larger school. I do plan to setup a tank for cardinals in the future.
Jason should I worry about my ph? I have well water rich in Iron and sulfur so I have a water softener system that softens my water to a extremely soft level, but leaves my ph between 8.2 and 8.4 I tried lowering it with tannins but it's pretty rough keeping the numbers stable that way.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks that's what I have decided but I really value your thoughts and was curious if I was correct in my thinking. It is very cool that you try to answer fans questions. 👍
I want to keep Cardinals so bad! I had about 30 neons in a 55, and I'm down to 6 to 8. I don't know what happened, but when I moved my tank to the basement-they would just drop one-by-one.
I have more experience with cardinal tetras. They've done really well for me. My water parameters are 7.8 pH, 200 TDS. In my established aquariums, the pH is 7.0. Cardinal tetras are active fish. I think that a 10 gallon aquarium is too small. A 20 long is the minimum tank size that I would choose for a group of 10 or so. My current group of cardinal tetras are doing well in a 29 gallon aquarium. The oldest one are almost 5 years old.
Hey, I’d really love to run this stocking plan by you and your viewers for review as I’m in the process of setting up my first tank. 20G High, Heavily Planted M & F Honey Gourami Pair 1 Bristlenose Pleco And 10-12 tetras but I dont know if cardinals, neons or embers would be best.
@@PrimeTimeAquaticsI think I’m going to go with embers after watching some more of your videos because my tap water is a little on the hard side for cardinals or neons and I don’t really want the extra trouble of using distilled water and botanicals in such a tank. Thanks for all the guides!
@PrimeTimeAquatics thank for your reply...as of today no death is reported...i hope they settle down in my tank...im a rookie and i dont know abt water temperature hardness etc etc i just use tap water 🥲

I know that is common advice that is best to buy neon tetras from a local breeder, but guess what...if you live in an area with hard water...there will be no local breeder. 🙁 But still want to keep tetras, so I'm making the swich to Rasbora, with those, as many as you put in the tank, is as many as you are gone get, losses are rare if any. Usually the only differences between neons and cardinals people mention or care about is size and color, but my priorities lie in health and hardiness

Cardinal for bigger tanks, neon for smaller ones. Both are great ❤

Cardinals all day long so beautiful! I have around 20 of them and they are the main focus of my tank!

Have fun!
I have both. They all stick together. Sometime soon Ill order cardinal from Flips.
I love love love our Neons, we have ten now in our ten gallon planted tank and they are gorgeous little dudes.
You can't beat the Cardinal Tetra. Pure Beauty.
I have had Neons live for 4-5 years up here in upstate NY 🤓🐠

What's the orange yellowish tetra with neon tetras @ 4:22 ?
Glow light tetras.

Would red cherry shrimp be safe to keep with them in a large planted tank like yours with 40 cardinals?
Cardinals should be too small for the adults but the young would be at risk, but a large planted tank should offer plenty of hiding places for them
Any big fish 5”-6”in that will be peaceful with either of these species? I’m assuming no, but considering Severum or EBA
Most medium size cichlids will wet them. Maybe pear gourami?
They'll become food quickly
Cardinal, I would pick based on your info.
What's going on always love your videos.
Have you heard of neon tetra diseas, a type of fungus usually growing on their upper moth/lip.
Ya - that can really rough tough to treat!
I have both. I like the cardinal a bit more. Neon are nice as well.
Cards are unavailable in our local stores. As are many slightly exotics.
Green Neons are my favorite. I just don't care for the red. Ember tetras now, they would be my favorite bright fish.

Looking for a suggestion for a centerpiece fish for a 120 gallon tank that has an assortment of about 100 tetras???
Empire gudgeons, peacock gudgeons, honey gourami, apistos, rams?
Still cant understand how most other fish channels send to the uk.i also just received tee shirt from australia.

How about breeding them? If you had a large school of both would they school together?
Breeding is the same. They can sort of school together. 😀

for me, just as hardy, I have green neons and cardinal tetras together
Greens have been fairly hardy for us.
