Great video, you have inspired me to start a fish tank young man. I’m 92 years old and my wife passed 8 months ago so I have been looking for things to keep my mind off her. This will be the first fish tank in the 92 years I’ve been alive. Thanks young lad.
Romans 10:9-10 “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. ”
Much love and cheers for you. Must b heartbreaking to lose such a long time companion. This also inspired me to restart my love for aquarism and after reading your comment made me want even more.
Pretty awesome young man. At 74 I just picked up tropical fish keeping again. This makes the 4th time in my long life that I have done so. I have always been forced to give it up due to too busy a schedule. Now that I am retired I am getting back into it. I love neons and did not know they could be bred so well in captivity. I subscribed and look forward to some benge watching.
I've been having a lot of anxiety and when I found this channel, I started watching it to calm down. I find your content very soothing and informative.
I so agree. This guy is so informative and really great for making you feel great apart from the fact that he is so good at breeding and caring about fish.
I’ve bred Neon Tetra’s when I was in my twenties. It just happened without trying in a 55 gallon aquarium. I never how it happened, but I was excited that it happened. Over the years I just repeated the process. I had many hiding places in the tank, so about 1/3 of them would survive to adults. I’m in my mid 60’s now. I’ve had other kinds of fish, but I’m returning to Neon Tetras soon. I enjoyed watching. Thank you for sharing.
I had the same experience in my teens, I had to give alot of them away because I didn't have room in my tank. I did nothing special at all. Never knew they where "hard" to breed.
Some advice from an old chemist, add a de ionising resin cartridge to your RO unit, your tds will go to zero. RODI water! I use it in all my tanks. ps I love your channel, well done.
How do your fish survive if you have no minerals in your water? Fish need a bit of minerals to have a healthy bone structure and micro elements to keep them healthy? Not sure how you can keep fish with water that has nothing in it. It’s like if we drank RODI water everyday. We wouldn’t be getting the things we need to grow and develop. There was a fish store where I live that used rodi water for their fish and they lasted a month tops. Because after a while they just wither away. You must have siyru stone or some other stone in your tank that adds calcium cause fish cannot live in 0tds water for very long, as a chemist I’m sure you are aware of this. So was just a bit confusing to me being a water chemist and how water with no minerals in it is not possible for long term fish keeping. Even if then fish is a neon tetra that prefers very low ph and low general hardness. I’m very confused here. Same with German blue rams. They do best at 6ph and 3-5 hardness how ever the tds still needs to be around 40-80 for them to grow and develop correctly.
I am really impressed. I am 69 and used to keep tropical fish when I was a boy when this species was regarded as very difficult to breed. It used to be recommended that you use "peat water."
Neon tetras are indeed one of the most fantastic fishes to keep. Their color and mobility felt like an underwater paradise whenever you look at them in a dark background! This is absolutely informative.
Great video, i didnt realize that it could be this simple. A few tips: Make an infusoria culture for the newly hatched ones. I think your first few failed is because you were using pure RO water. I would add some moss from a tank in the RO water. Also add Neocaridina Shrimp (cherry shrimp) to the spawn tanks and they will eat the fungus/infertile eggs and keep the fresh eggs fungus free.
We had a normal fish tank with 4 neon tetras, we never even tried to breed them and yet we were surprised to see large fry swimming around (we weren’t expecting fry so we didn’t see them when they were small), we had a spongey rock/tunnel with lots of shade, and i guess the fry ate algae or fish food scraps,
Same here. They just need the right condition and space in the same aquarium. No much stressing or creating much of a scene. They just survive and do their things. Lol
I remember, 30+ years ago, that sphagnum moss was used in order to soften the water down to try and encourage neons to breed. I tried it numerous times without any success. Weirdly enough, I managed to breed white cloud mountain minnows practically by mistake, having kept them separate to my community tank fish for a week or so! Luckily, the tank they were in was well established with plenty of food available to the tiny fry, for them to get big enough to eat baby brine shrimp. And, like most, once they're on that, their growth rate really accelerates! Those pink tummies being the giveaway!
30 odd years ago i used sphagnum moss too breed. Pencils fish Rasboras and Tetras. With the Rasboras,it was so dark with tannins, nothing could survive!! Yet Rasbora maculata (spell check) ended up with loads of fry that just looked stunning in that dark water. Old school Beach leave believer. 😊

I like this approach and you did really well with it. I currently have a storage box ‘aquarium’ for Endlers. Can’t find cheap tanks easily in UK and manufacturers do their utmost to make sure they sell you as many ‘essential’ gadgets and filter media at max cost as possible. Like the keeping it simple idea with plants doing the filtration.
Glad it's not just me. I've been out of the hobby for a long time but I'm still interested in it. You can't just buy a tank on its own, they only seem to sell complete set ups with things you don't want or need!

I live in brazil and I actually managed to breed them naturally. I have a pound like container about 100 liters, with a lot of plants. I also put them with tanicthys albonubes. I don't know how but there is a lot of neon fry living peacefully with the cloud minnows fry. The surface plants provide alot of hiding places for them so the parents can't eat them that easily. I thought it would be a lot harder to breed them but i managed lol. I guess the secret is constant water changes, so they think it's rain water, since they breed in rainy seasons
I worked in a fish warehouse for a few years. We provided fish for a major pet supply chain. The most frustrating thing we had to deal with was the 'fainting' neons. We had all of our bags checked before they went into the box. We always had to wait until the fainters started swimming again before walking away from the tank. Then, within the 10-15 feet between the tank and the boxing station, there were ALWAYS more that had fainted. So we had to stand at the boxing station until they were all swimming again. It was SO frustrating!
I find this very peculiar that these particular fish(in fact all of them) have a fainting ability(which is called "immobile" stunt or faking death) weird adaptation for a survival tactic. Most predatory fish or animals in general have an auto-feed response to kill and it stops about 99.9% of those predatory fish brains from attacking if their prey "isn't moving" while sending a distress signal to other prey in the area or to other predatory fish,it's not inaudible cause they can hear subtle discrepancy sounds we humans can not hear or see(hertz has a wide system.. we can not hear anything below a 1 decibel or higher than 10 decibel) there are expections(like with me hearing at -5 to -30 that's cause have small hairs in my ear drums) ..anyways .. With neons they love rain water(they also an attuned to " *Agitated* " falling or running water that forces them to either want to drink or jump to catch clean water from the source(which is why they jump from tub to tub, yes I've solved your riddle to them jumping) reverse osmosis water has as you stated about 6.5 ph.. but I normally have mine alittle cleaner around 3.5 ph. I heat my rain water to about 100-120 degrees then allow my gallons that were heated to be naturally cooled off,I want dust, debris, parasites, bacteria to have died off.. you can pressure steam or boil your rainwater both are fine.. My betas(particular the crowntails) love when I drop just a small amount of squeeze lemon juice from the fruit into their tanks. Same with my gouramis(they love oranges) and the senegal butchers they love(cherry juice from the source) so you see all of them have likes of various fruits found in their respective regions of origins..
I've tried neons a couple times but couldn't get them to work, I'm definitely going to have to try this method, especially since it doesn't require me to really get much. The neons in my display tank are pretty well fed, and most of the rest of the stuff in there is breeding too. Might even set something up this weekend if I get the time.
Got my first viable looking eggs today. I've only been doing one container and pair, but if the fry survive I feel pretty confident in scaling up to trying multiple containers.
This is the best part of the hobby; long ago, before Mr UA-cam, I bred species by trial and error. You´ve got it right, be persistent and tweak things one at a time.
It's very interesting process. I have 12 healthy Neons no losses after 2 weeks with me. Will begin setting up and see what happens. The remainder about rotten eggs in female is most important 👌 thank you xoxo 😘
I'm not even into keeping fish anymore but your video is very informative, entertaining, and very detailed even for the failed parts so excellent work! I'm a fan now
It really is that simple... I have been researching a lot to find out the best way to breed my neons and everyhing I read seems so complicated. This however, is totally doable! Thanks for showing us how simple it can be.
if your not getting 0 TDS on your ppm you may be due to change your filter soon. when you filter through your RO system it become more blocked up allowing more things through and restricting the flow of the water coming through at the same time. just something to consider keep up the videos there great.
After watching your video I went and picked up 9, they are tiny so I will grow them bigger and try your method! I have never bread these fish before so I'm excited to see the outcome! One thing I definitely learned is patience will pay off !
Do you need to acclimate the pairs when you move from the main tank to the RO water. My tank has higher Ph(7.8-8). Does plopping them in there work or do you need to acclimate?
I once read that putting fish in 0 TDS RO water would harm the fish by stripping it's slime coat off as the water tries to take any mineral content in it can. Is this not true? Are Neon tetras immune to this? Or is that a long term issue if left in super low TDS water for too long?
My neon tetras had no issues spawning in TDS = 300 (as long as they were well fed and otherwise healthy & happy). Try it out, and you'll might get same results. However moving from TDS of 300 into RO water suddenly, is very risky, and stressful for any fish. Neons are hardy fish, but try it with a more delicate fish, and it might not survive. If you do want to move them, acclimate gradually.
@@dingodyno9016you could try. It totally could work, but the tds is a great way to encourage more breeding. If you do use a low tds system, just acclimate them over time or add it through the use of a 10-20% water change. It's much less risky and still has the effect of the fish feeling a lower tds
Thanks for mentioning this! I followed the directions of the video. Within hours of placing the neons from their tank right in the RO water, it killed one fish, nearly killed the others! Too much of a shock. 10/10 don’t recommend.
So I have a few questions gonna attempt this method myself, Im just wondering am I supposed to add like quick start or bacteria of another variety to the tubs and no airpump ?
The thumbnails look like clickbait videos by those annoying stereotypical influencers, but when I finally watched a video it was really educational and wholesome. Don't judge a book by its cover
Great video. This is why most asian fish farmers and breeders all keep chickens. Egg yolk is great for starting fry and as a binder for other ingredients used to feed fish of all sizes.
For those who use Fahrenheit Formula: (°C x 9/5) + 32 = °F 9/5 in decimal form is 1.8 So, for 21°C: (21° x 1.8) + 32 = 69.8°F This is handy info to have as a fish/shrimp keeper/breeder! Hope it helps, God Bless
Great video ! Spawning neons is my next project and your video was very helpful. Thanks. I watch all your videos and in my opinion you are a good breeder of so many different kind of fresh water tropical fish.👍
My corydorys are constantly breeding but usually the eggs get eaten, but yesterday I found a fry that survived! It's roughly 0.5cm and I hope it survives
Amazing video. I was like you at your age, bred all fish that I thought were possible in tanks, and once I’d bred Discus thought mission complete. Didn’t realise neons could be bred in ‘normal’ tanks. Am 50 now and gave up about 8 years ago, but always thinking of starting again. Would be interesting to see how the commercial guys breed neons in their thousands!! Still only £1 a fish here in the uk, and for a hell of a lot of effort. BTW, I prefer cardinals but imagine the process is the same? Keep up the good work. New subscriber here!!
I'm new to this and I'm curious-- how do "bad brood stock" produce offspring that are "good brood stock"? Wouldn't the offspring of the bad brood stock have the same issues as there parents? Or is it largely due to how they spend their first couple of grow out weeks? Thanks for the videos, this is beginning to look like a fun hobby!
Capture, shipping and quarantine are all damaging to these fish. Many places use prophylactic medication treatments that are harsh and often build up in fish. They are certainly not the sort of fish you expect to attain the optimal egg health or number for spawning. This is why the fry tend to be so much healthier. With care you can even break the cycle of parents infecting young with unknown parasites, by raising fry in systems with no adults. Done well you will have plenty of fry to pick the best pairs from, to create ideal display fish. Dont forget we are selecting for different traits than nature selects. We want big calm chill pretty fish :) you may not achieve domestication, but you can create a bloodline with enhanced pet fish traits :)
Good Morning from Montana! Ive been setting up a breeding tank for my neons. I found out the creek water we have behind the house (spring fed and not near agriculture) is perfect non-hardness (gH 0-3, kH less than 5). Thats compared to our well water which is hard. I have added organic peat moss and catappa leaves. The water is a nice tannin. However, I can not get the ammonia in control. I waste water from an established filter and Stability and Quick Start according to directions. Its almost like the ammonia is worse today. Nitrates & nitrites are zero to acceptable ranges. I have a plant with roots dangling in the water. There is an air filter going and low setting. This tank is a 5 gallon but only half full. I did a 50% water change once, then thought I was setting back the beneficial bacteria. Im now tempted to not use peat moss and just use the creek water in another vessle with pH lowering catappa leaf or use pH Down. Yet I was hoping to establish the rotifers etc with an established breeding tank should the hatch be successful. Any advice here would be great!!! Thank you!
"These neon tetras are going to be a lot better than the ones at your local store" *camera pans over to a neon tetra at the local petco with the worst case of scoliosis that we've ever seen*
Thank you for this video. Do you know how many times can neon tetras mate in a short period? One of my tetras just laid eggs 2 days ago but none of them hatched. I realized her belly is getting bigger again. Can she lay eggs again in such a short period?
I am looking forward to trying to breed theses in the future! Thanks for the great video! I really enjoy your breeding videos as you go very in-depth and break things down so anyone can give it a go! Due to your Ram breeding videos I am in the process of raising fry and it has been going well. Have you ever tried breeding Rummy Nose Tetras? If so could you give me any advice I absolutely love them and want to have a huge school in my 75 gallon discus display tank but cant seem to find much advice on breeding them. Would you ever do a video on breeding them?
Amazing video! You certainly know what you are doing. The fry are so adorable! I love and have Neons and they were hard to find. Your voice is so calming and your instructions are easy to follow. I subscribed and looking forward to more videos. Thank you
Did I manage to reproduce the Cardinal Neons? I have never seen their reproduction in Brazil, as all stores are stocked with fish caught directly from the Amazon, these fish travel all over the country.
I love watching your vids so much so I’ve just started my first tank 4ft/15/15, I’m going to start with guppies as I really love the colours, at my age 68 years young I have a new hobby, thank you so much for your vids they are really informative 👍👍
I had good results with them in mullberry leaf tannin stained water. I used a similar method to zebra danios, but different light routine. The brutal bit was always seperating females from males to get them in condition for better egg yields
Live food for ya breeders and fry gets more eggs and higher survival. Mosquito larvae are the best option. For adults chopping up frozen earthworm is pretty good too. But for fry getting greenwater cranking seemed to be the best strategy to increase initial fry numbers. Not sure what critters were in the greenwater but it certainly triggered a good feeding response, and let me drip feed them while at work
Very very cool I think that will be my winter project we get some pretty good neon's in the UK . Can Cardin tetras be bred with the same method? I have just completed breeding 5 spined sticklebacks in filtered bowls I'm just sat watching about 40 fry enjoying a brine shrimp supper
I’m so glad there is a UA-camr that knows what’s there doing! And I love how they play dead 😅😂 I actually have 5 neon tetras of my (all females) own and there so gorgeous
I remember when Herbert Axel was trying to breed them in 1960s, and they figured out the soft rain water flooded out woods and used washed willow roots for breeding

For the same reasons people use RO water nowadys: keep the funguscount etc. low, as well as the PH of course.
The eggs do benefit from humid acid and tannins. Coconut fiber has tannins so seems like either would work but the fiber does seem easy

6:48 She wasn't playing dead. She was in shock from being called a fatty. 🐟 O.O
lol true
You definitely do some of the best breeding videos. Keep it up!
I'm not even into keeping fish anymore but your video is very informative, entertaining, and very detailed even for the failed parts so excellent work! I'm a fan now
Wow I feel lucky. Purchased 11 Neons a few months ago and all of them are happy and healthy
Thanks for sharing. We just started breeding our betta. Have so many little fries. Definitely will try this once get the space.
@6:13 the amount of skills it takes to do this 🫡
Been following your videos for a bit now, learned a lot from you. Thank you. From 🇨🇦
Dean has so much knowledge. Just getting into breeding fish. And I've learned a ton from you and Dean these past few months. Thanks!
Challenging. Better you than me! Thanks for sharing. I'll do this one vicariously through you.
This is my favorite type of video you do, i think everyone likes it when YOU are in it. 🙌🏻 🔥
After watching your video I went and picked up 9, they are tiny so I will grow them bigger and try your method! I have never bread these fish before so I'm excited to see the outcome! One thing I definitely learned is patience will pay off !
*bred
Just a tip if u can get some catapa leaves just boil them with water, then take the water out and mix it with rain water its good for breeding neons
I have leaves but I would be scared to use rain water 💦
Hello, What are the things like yellow rope that you put inside the containers? and I wondered about the purpose of your posting
Thank you so much for sharing this adventure with us. Those babies were so adorable !!! Maybe some day I'll give this a try.
Great video, I've had fish for 40 years but didn't know how to sex neons. I have bred angels but never neons. Excellent job dude
Do you need to acclimate the pairs when you move from the main tank to the RO water. My tank has higher Ph(7.8-8). Does plopping them in there work or do you need to acclimate?
Hi, I was just wondering whether you could use distilled or bottled water to breed them?
Is it the same procedure to breed cardinal tetras as well?
So do you think it would be okay to breed them in a 10 gallon tank and doing all this except for messing with the TDS?
Amazing!! I love watching the process and am excited to see how they develop
The thumbnails look like clickbait videos by those annoying stereotypical influencers, but when I finally watched a video it was really educational and wholesome. Don't judge a book by its cover
Hi Nick will you eventually be selling these on your website? Would love to keep neons but they keep dying when I buy them from lfs
I’ve just ordered some from Aquahuna-reviews say they’ve got a much harder strain. Fingers crossed!
Killin' it on the videos and UA-cam growth, my friend! Keep the great stuff coming
Love your videos, so educational and help me look after my fish better as a beginner
Great video. This is why most asian fish farmers and breeders all keep chickens. Egg yolk is great for starting fry and as a binder for other ingredients used to feed fish of all sizes.
it didn't work for me, water got dirty and many fish died. Vinegar eels are way better solution.
Love your channel. Informative and relaxing! Thanks!
For those who use Fahrenheit
Formula: (°C x 9/5) + 32 = °F
9/5 in decimal form is 1.8
So, for 21°C:
(21° x 1.8) + 32 = 69.8°F
This is handy info to have as a fish/shrimp keeper/breeder! Hope it helps, God Bless
Definitely going to give this a try next year when it’s warmer in sydney.
Really good video mate
i didn't know you could leave them in small tubs with no air pump. I'm going to try it out. I'd like to know how to soften the water too
You have a voice that is so relaxing just wanted to say that. Plus your a good teacher I learned a lot. Keep up the good work.
I thought you were supposed to remineralize RO/DI water before using it. Can fish really live in water with such a low TDS and no minerals?
I had these fish as a kid and took really good care of them. A few lived more than 5 years and got up to 2+ inches long
Really cool. This explains a lot of why it's so difficult to get them to spawn. Thank you
Can neon tetra live without heater??
Actually went out to buy pov neons today to have a crack at breeding them, and have come home to this video. Perfect timing lol
Healthier environment can help
The fry are usually much healthier than the original fish, but not nearly as healthy as high quality neons would be
Good Morning from Montana! Thank you!
Keep making the breeding videos !
Try the ZeroWater 23 cup pitcher. It will filter tap water to 0 ppm.
"These neon tetras are going to be a lot better than the ones at your local store"
*camera pans over to a neon tetra at the local petco with the worst case of scoliosis that we've ever seen*
Yeah but he's now bred them and will continue to improve them.
This is my new favourite fish channel ❤️
Great video! I love your breeding projects, they’re very entertaining to watch! Keep it up
Love the videos your voice is so soothing not to mention all the little thing I’ve learned from watching
I laughed out loud when you were picking out some fat ladies for your pairs. Great video
I wonder if Cardinals are the same or quite different
Bom demais ver peixes "brasileiros" principalmente amazonenses sempre ganhando o mundo
Congratulations, fish papa! Cigars for all!!
I love watching your vids so much so I’ve just started my first tank 4ft/15/15, I’m going to start with guppies as I really love the colours, at my age 68 years young I have a new hobby, thank you so much for your vids they are really informative 👍👍
hi, does coconut fiber have any special treatment?
You are so talented! I've watched a lot of breeders and you are one of the best to explain everything thanks!!!
brought some neon tetras for the tank in my room. very beautiful fish, very cheap and easy to take care of
Love the profile pic Nick! Awesome video! 😎👌
Very good work, including your camera work. Unfortunately we don't see people doing what you did. Congratulations boy, keep working!
This guy makes Great Videos. Good info; Clear, and fun to watch. Good stuff
Excellent work, excellent video. You are a gifted fish breeder sharing your wisdom.
Omg this one of my favorit fish for my aquascape 🎉❤
I’m so glad there is a UA-camr that knows what’s there doing! And I love how they play dead 😅😂 I actually have 5 neon tetras of my (all females) own and there so gorgeous
I remember when Herbert Axel was trying to breed them in 1960s, and they figured out the soft rain water flooded out woods and used washed willow roots for breeding
why willow roots? salicylic acid? I have it in my garden.
I just found your channel and have watched a few videos... I like them as you don't waffle on about BS keep up the great work mate... and subbed.
Great video. Question, when the fry are so tiny how the heck do you water change without sucking the babies up? you can barely see them
