This is great. I’ve had me neons and cardinals with kuhli loaches a betta nerite snails. All got along great. They key to the betta is to introduce them last. Give the other stock time to acclimate and find their space. Also having several neons allows them to school which makes it difficult for the betta to single one out. I do like the black water look. I drop some Indian almond leaves in there for the color. Usually soak my spider wood and what not for about 2 weeks before adding, I'm also talking with a out 4 months if experience in fish keeping so far. I learn quick. My lives sustained compared to lost are better. I lost 4 Cory Dora and 4 shrimp and 1 Betta sustaining 2 Cory Dora 5 shrimp 1 Betta 5 neon tetra and 2 mystery snails right now. Adding 6 more albino Cory's 8 more shrimp and 11 more neon tetra. Two different tanks though.
I recently returned to the hobby and put 10 neon in a cycled 20 gallons with a betta and pygmy corydoras. Parameters were good and there was no bullying. The betta didn't even care. The pH is around 7. Yet, I had 60% neon mortality within the first week. I love them, but I gave up on them and got glowlight tetras and harlequin rasboras and, so far, all of them are doing fine.
Neons are awesome fish but when described, no one seems to mention that they are known to be fin nippers. I added six neons to a tank that had only a Honey Gourami and a Mystery Snail. Within a week, the Gourami’s “feelers” and the snail’s tentacles were damaged. I couldn’t find them anymore because they were hiding from the neons. The neons went back to the LFS and the Gourami and snail couldn’t be happier…and healthier.
It would be really cool if you make an separate video of the neon sickness, i know there is something about this online but I'm still not sure if I could spot it right :/ this is an amazing educational video! :)
One thing I learned about tetras is that they like to mimic other tank mates. I had neons with guppies and they picked the ground and swam everywhere with the guppies. I had them with just corydoras and they stayed lower picking the ground like a corydora. Hopefully somebody has had the same temperament and behavior, otherwise I just sound crazy lol.
Sometimes schooling fish do that. It's called stress schooling (doesn't mean they are stressed) and it happens if they are in smaller groups where they mimic and school with other fish for protection.
I have Cory's, pristella and neons. The tetras steal the Cory's food from the bottom of the tank and throw it round like a basketball 😅. I'm a crazy fish lady too😂
I had a tough luck with NTs, few got ich, few died as I wasn't aware on the thermal shock, the survived weak two guys are still with me for about an year.
Call me crazy, which I know a lot will, but I've almost completed a tank with 2 neons, 2 ember, 2 black khuli loaches, 6 neocaridina shrimp, and 2 pea puffers. I say almost done because I'm currently on the hunt for 2 celestial pearl danios to complete the tank, if I can ever get to my lfs when they have them before they sell out. The only thing that's been in danger are the snails that I add, my puffers have a nice snail graveyard right in the front of the tank.
Thank you so much for this species profile. I checked out your list but I didn't see the chili Rasbora. I would love to have those fish and I would also really appreciate a species profile on those.
I'm trying to convince my husband for some Neon Tetras. The reason why is because I think it's time he moves on from the death of one of our Dumbo bettas. I can't blame him, we did what we could and he suddenly fell ill. We tried getting leaves but the ones that were delivered were basically small and looked like normal leaves. Regardless of our efforts, he didn't make it. So after a few months I've convinced him to buy a betta and some neon tetras since he's decided to upgrade the tank to ten gallons. If things with the neon tetras and our bettas don't work out we'll be either keeping them in a different tank or returning.
I have a 6Gallon Tank of 40cmx23cmx25cm When I look for stockings suggestions on yt or even articles website's many suggested Neon Tetras but aren't neon Tetras schooling fish they need around 15-20 Gallons right? So can I take the suggestions and get around 6-7 Neon Tetras for my 6Gallon Tank or any other fish other than a Betta you suggest?
A dwarf guarami solo though they would be better in a 10, ember tetra school like 6-8, small rasbora school like 6-8, pea puffers and bumblebee gobie, a few male guppies. With schools you are pushing it but if the fish stay under an inch you can have a small school and maybe even get 10 of them if u have live plant to help with bioload
Great video as usual. Thanks for all the information you give us. I have a 75 gallon tank, heavily planted. My ammonia is 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 15-20. I have about 50 neon tetras. I’m concerned after watching your video. Ph 7.2 Kh 3 Gh however 10 Should I be concerned? Anything you would recommend.
Great video when I first got my group of neons there were great swimming all over the place I added a angel fish to there aquarium temporarily since then I have removed the angel fish but they still behave like he there very afraid won’t come out of the plant I’m thinking off getting some new fish to add not sure what type
I JUST brought home my first Neon Tetra's this evening so PERFECT timing finding your video. =) Question - I have a 10 gallon planted aquarium that currently has a single nerite snail and 15 cherry shrimp. Do you think with what I already have in the tank, plus the 4 neon's I just brought home, that would it be alright to eventually add 2 more neon's so that I have that minimum of 6 total or do you think that would be too much for the size of the tank with what I have in it? Thanks!
Shrimp have a very small bio load, so that shouldn't overload the cycle if you take care of it. The neons will probably eat some of the shrimplets when the shrimp start to breed.
Pity he doesn't mention Neon Tetra Disease. I bought NTs and was distressed when they starting getting sick. I kept medicating, and managed to kill my BN Pleco by over-medication. The Neons all died anyway. And yes, I had them in quarantine for a month before putting them in my display tank...
I have been bitten by the neon bug and have three left of my group, they don’t do well in my water. Old story find fish that fit your water, don’t change water for fish ( bites on this one)!
Hello Jason, I have been following your channel for months now. Very informative content. I would appreciate your suggestion on stocking a tanganyikan tank. I have (1) Leleupi and (1) Brichardi and will be adding (1) Inkfin calvus and (1) Gold head compressiceps. I have large dragon stones in the tank for hiding; do you suggest adding shells for the altolamprologus?
Everytime I've had neons they have died on me. They are beautiful but I'll stick to my danios and rasbora. May try again with them now in more experienced. Loved the video though, I'm inspired to try tetras again. Thank you
Same here. I have 3 left from about a dozen I bought from Pet Smart a year ago. They actually look pretty good. Recently I bought 14 from a reputable online seller along with danios and rasboras. Two neons were DOA and the rest didn't last a week in the medicated quarantine tank. Pretty sure they were just too small to be shipped across country. Think I also lost one danio along the way but everyone else seems to be happy.
@@miked6335 yeah whatever took mine out never affected my danios, panda Cory's or rasbora. Was very upset at the time as water was fine, no outward signs of disease so was at a loss as to why it happened
My experience, also a freind's experience too. I had a cycled 30g, perfect parameters, with lots of plants I added 12 to. All but one was dead within a week.
@@pamelapilling6996 such a shame, yeah was same for me. Parameters great, Amazon swords, crypts and anubias and all died. Blamed myself but I'm wondering if it was neon tetra related illness or stress from shipping. Should add I follow proper acclimation too. Was bitterly upset
Everyday I wake up to one dead neon tetra. I've tested my water and it is fine. I have other friendly species and they seem fine. It only seems to be my neon tetras that die. I do notice a couple being aggressive to each other even though they are in a large group. Are neon tetras capable of bullying and killing each other? If so, what are some possible reasons why? I gave a 55 gallon tank and a group of 25 neon tetras, along with 5 clown loaches and 5 dwarf neon rainbow fish
Besides tanganykin cichlids, what will live ok in high ph 8 - 8.2 water? My kh is 20. I want Bolivian rams and some cories and some forktail rainbows will my water be bad for them?
Hi Jason, I just subscribed to your channel, get information. I have a planted 75 gallon and have mainly neon tetras, along with a few platys. All my levels are perfect. My KH is a 4, but my GH is 13. My GH is a 13 in both my 75 gallon and quarantine tank. My gold fish tank is a GH of 8. PH is 7.2-7.4 for all my aquariums I have had no issues with 75 gallon with and gold fish tank. Fish are doing great. I’m just concerned about future issues. But I’m losing neons in my quarantine tank when I first buy them. After watching your video, I figure it must be the high GH. Do you have any suggestions.
Neons are notorious for big loses - they are some of the weaker fish in the hobby. It's usually a matter of buying a bunch and knowing you are going to lose some, unfortunately.
I bought 9 neon tetras for my 10gallon two days ago. One of them died yesterday and another one doesn’t look too well. The water parameters are good and the tank is cycled for a few weeks. I added used filter media to speed up the cycle and also added API quick start. Not sure what’s wrong. Maybe I just bought a couple of bad ones?
Something might be wrong with my neon tetra XD they totally interact with the substate. Obviously not like a true bottom feeder, but they totally pick stuff off the bottom looking for food or poo
You say it’s ok to keep about six neon tetras in a 10-gallon tank. Will they be happy and thrive? I read from a few sites that they won’t school and will stay in one place.
May I ask how do you feed neon tetra flake food? Ours does not come to the top to feed for flakes.. I wonder if I scoop up the tank water and soak the flakes and pour it in, it sinks so neon tetra would be able to eat flake food midway level?? Also, how big pellet size do you feed them. 0.5mm?Still too big? Thank you.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics They come to the top surface to eat? I am not sure if they need more time getting used to the surroundings since they are here for short time or it is their natural instinct.... If it were pellet, how small would the pellet size is? 0.5mm?
I like these a lot, but I've had lousy luck keeping them. Black Skirt Tetras, Black Neon Tetras and Serpae Tetras all seem to do much better in my water, which is 7.0 and hard.
How would i add synodontis cats to a highly aggressive mbuna tank? These mbunas have killed a small electric lab before so i wanna be careful with the synos. Will the synos survive? And if so how to add them in? Theyre dwarf petricola
My mbuna have typically left them alone. If I were going to add them now I would add them with the lights off. When the lights do turn on I would wait a few minutes for them to wake up and feed the tank. I would also try to make sure there was a cave or rock work that the synodontis can retreat to if he feels threatened. Good luck!
curious about what 2 out of my 6 my neons are doing [ got them yesterday] . all of them are healthy, eating and doing well but 2 of them [ one is the smallest of the bunch and very slender and the other is pretty plump] will leave the school and go near a cluster of plants and chase each other for a bit [ not in an aggressive way tho] before returning to the bunch. might be spawning and although i highly doubt the fry will survive. if it helps my harlequin rasboras are also spawning and iv seen eggs from them
I have a 10 gallon tank with 5 glo tetra, and 4 snails.. is there any type of fish I can add to the tank? Prefer a bottom fish that'll keep algae and snail breeding down also how many should I get to be comfortable with the 5 tetra
How I envy the fishkeepers with soft water, that have spontaneous breeding from neon tetra, while me, with my > 22 dGH hardness and PH of 8.0 water, I struggle to keep them alive. 😗
@@imalemon1050 The real problem is the hardness. There coud be solutions for that as well, reversed osmosis and the like, but a good practice is to keep fish that are more suited to your water paramaters. However, I do break that rule, in the sense that everybody keep telling me that I would be the african cichlid "king" with my water, while I'm a community tank "fanatic". 😛
This is what I googled-Swimming. Normal behavior for a gourami involves swimming near the top of the aquarium. ... As such, gouramis tend to hang out near the water surface, so they can take their supplemental oxygen
I had 12. Most of them died off slowly over about a year. Looked like their bodies and fins were rotting. I still have 1 left who stays healthy. I bought 6 more this year, but they died off quickly. My pH is about 8, so that is probably the problem. I give up. Maybe I will try keeping the green or black ones. My solitary neon needs a friend.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics respect you guys, but disagree. Cardinal, ember tetras would be a better choice for rams. The higher temperature affect on neons has been well documented.
Strange my new gold Gourami doesn't look so good kinda just floating near the top eating some. Others extremely active. Any thoughts anyone?. Got them from the PetSmart
Sounds like it might be sick or just getting used to the tank. If you have multiple gouramis in the tank (especially blue, opaline, golds or dwarfs) they usually wind up fighting until there is only one left.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you for quick reply, ya the gold Gourami did not make it unfortunately was floating at the bottom of tank. Such a bummer. All others are doing awesome. I watch all your UA-cams :) I learn a lot . :)

Within a week, the Gourami’s “feelers” and the snail’s tentacles were damaged. I couldn’t find them anymore because they were hiding from the neons. The neons went back to the LFS and the Gourami and snail couldn’t be happier…and healthier.
It would be really cool if you make an separate video of the neon sickness, i know there is something about this online but I'm still not sure if I could spot it right :/
this is an amazing educational video! :)
I have a community tank with plattys, 2golden dojos, 2 guppys,2yoyos and a school of neon Tetras and they all get along great.
Great informative video as usual!
I agree. Mine also mimic the Mollies in the tank by picking on the gravel lol
I'm a crazy fish lady too😂
A large school of neons, along with some gold rams, would look great in a 55 gallon aquarium..
Great video Jason
🤟💛😎 we gave a tank with neon Tetras, phantom reds and loaches. Awesome fish 💛
I have the neon tetras 2 living happily with my halfmoon Betta :) awesome fish 🐠
Nice video buddy
I had a tough luck with NTs, few got ich, few died as I wasn't aware on the thermal shock, the survived weak two guys are still with me for about an year.
Love neons. So beautiful.
Dear God that's a magnificent beard 🧔
One off my favourites and first ever fish. Just have to have some Neons 🤗
Great video, loved it
beauty
I love your videos lots of information thank you for your videos.JD
I have a 6Gallon Tank of 40cmx23cmx25cm
When I look for stockings suggestions on yt or even articles website's many suggested Neon Tetras but aren't neon Tetras schooling fish they need around 15-20 Gallons right?
So can I take the suggestions and get around 6-7 Neon Tetras for my 6Gallon Tank or any other fish other than a Betta you suggest?
A dwarf guarami solo though they would be better in a 10, ember tetra school like 6-8, small rasbora school like 6-8, pea puffers and bumblebee gobie, a few male guppies. With schools you are pushing it but if the fish stay under an inch you can have a small school and maybe even get 10 of them if u have live plant to help with bioload
Ya, they need to be in groups, which is why I don't recommend anything less than a 10 gallon.
6-7 green neon tetras May be an option
A couple of guppies.
Still one of the best looking fish in the hobby.
I agree!
I have goldfish now but these are my favorite fish.
I love neon tetras 😍
Great video as usual. Thanks for all the information you give us.
I have a 75 gallon tank, heavily planted. My ammonia is 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 15-20. I have about 50 neon tetras. I’m concerned after watching your video.
Ph 7.2
Kh 3
Gh however 10
Should I be concerned? Anything you would recommend.
If they are doing fine right now I wouldn't worry about it.
I appreciate it. Great information provide. Thank you
Hi Jason, last question, what is a safe KH and GH for neons with a heavily planted tank?
Great video when I first got my group of neons there were great swimming all over the place I added a angel fish to there aquarium temporarily since then I have removed the angel fish but they still behave like he there very afraid won’t come out of the plant I’m thinking off getting some new fish to add not sure what type
I JUST brought home my first Neon Tetra's this evening so PERFECT timing finding your video. =)
Question - I have a 10 gallon planted aquarium that currently has a single nerite snail and 15 cherry shrimp.
I'm glad I just read this Cheers
He does mention it around the 7 minute mark.
Amazing video!!!!!
I have been bitten by the neon bug and have three left of my group, they don’t do well in my water. Old story find fish that fit your water, don’t change water for fish ( bites on this one)!
I wish they did better for me too.
They certainly are beautiful fish
Hello Jason, I have been following your channel for months now. Very informative content. I would appreciate your suggestion on stocking a tanganyikan tank. I have (1) Leleupi and (1) Brichardi and will be adding (1) Inkfin calvus and (1) Gold head compressiceps. I have large dragon stones in the tank for hiding; do you suggest adding shells for the altolamprologus?
They won’t need them since you only have one. The males get too large to use them anyhow. Thanks for watching!
@@alisonnicholson i would say stress from transport they get stressed very easy I find compared to other fish
Unfortunately standard neons are probably the weakest out of all the varieties- it may not be something you’re doing wrong?
Great info! Too bad they prefer soft water which is a no no for our hard Chicago water :( any suggestions for pretty moderately hard water fish?
We did a whole video on good fish for hard water. :-) Also, any fish you see in our fish room have done well in Chicago water!
Besides tanganykin cichlids, what will live ok in high ph 8 - 8.2 water? My kh is 20. I want Bolivian rams and some cories and some forktail rainbows will my water be bad for them?
The Rams and Cory cats might struggle a little in that water.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics That's what I was thinking- bummer.
Could you do a video on nano species? Like ones that would be small enough that they wouldn't particularly bother neocaridina
PH is 7.2-7.4 for all my aquariums
I have had no issues with 75 gallon with and gold fish tank.
Ok I appreciate it.
Neons are notorious for being weak. It might not have been anything you did.
The more you have the better they will be.
Thank you.
I haven't had that problem. They always seem to go to where the food is?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics They come to the top surface to eat? I am not sure if they need more time getting used to the surroundings since they are here for short time or it is their natural instinct.... If it were pellet, how small would the pellet size is? 0.5mm?
I have a 55 gallon with 40 neons in there👌🏻👌🏻
I have found that Neons and Cardinals will school together just fine!
I like these a lot, but I've had lousy luck keeping them. Black Skirt Tetras, Black Neon Tetras and Serpae Tetras all seem to do much better in my water, which is 7.0 and hard.
I'm the same way
How would i add synodontis cats to a highly aggressive mbuna tank? These mbunas have killed a small electric lab before so i wanna be careful with the synos. Will the synos survive? And if so how to add them in? Theyre dwarf petricola
My mbuna have typically left them alone. If I were going to add them now I would add them with the lights off. When the lights do turn on I would wait a few minutes for them to wake up and feed the tank. I would also try to make sure there was a cave or rock work that the synodontis can retreat to if he feels threatened. Good luck!
curious about what 2 out of my 6 my neons are doing [ got them yesterday] . all of them are healthy, eating and doing well but 2 of them [ one is the smallest of the bunch and very slender and the other is pretty plump] will leave the school and go near a cluster of plants and chase each other for a bit [ not in an aggressive way tho] before returning to the bunch. might be spawning and although i highly doubt the fry will survive. if it helps my harlequin rasboras are also spawning and iv seen eggs from them
They might be, but you are correct - you probably won’t see any fry.
How long should new fish be quarantined?
I do 4 weeks
I have a 10 gallon tank with 5 glo tetra, and 4 snails.. is there any type of fish I can add to the tank? Prefer a bottom fish that'll keep algae and snail breeding down also how many should I get to be comfortable with the 5 tetra
A clown pleco may help (but any fish that would prey on unwanted snails will also attack the snails you do want).
@@PrimeTimeAquatics how many Pleco would be acceptable to add to the 10gal tank
Recommendation for a good substrate color to showcase the fish color ?
I like to go darker with neons.
Clicked like 101 times :)
Too funny :-)
How I envy the fishkeepers with soft water, that have spontaneous breeding from neon tetra, while me, with my > 22 dGH hardness and PH of 8.0 water, I struggle to keep them alive. 😗
ik sometimes adding driftwood can help bring the ph around 7
@@imalemon1050 The real problem is the hardness. There coud be solutions for that as well, reversed osmosis and the like, but a good practice is to keep fish that are more suited to your water paramaters.
However, I do break that rule, in the sense that everybody keep telling me that I would be the african cichlid "king" with my water, while I'm a community tank "fanatic". 😛
I'm thinking that if I get a rain barrel I could do blackwater.
Can you put neon tetras in a tank with a tidal 55 filter? Do they get sucked into the filter through the surface skimmer?
I think they should be ok.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks very much for your answer. I will try a few and if they don't fit I will buy more.
Will they go good with Roseline Sharks and Rainbow fish?
Sure
i really like the gold and diamond varieties too. there are even longfin neons which are not my cup of tea
So many cool varieties!
This is what I googled-Swimming. Normal behavior for a gourami involves swimming near the top of the aquarium. ... As such, gouramis tend to hang out near the water surface, so they can take their supplemental oxygen
Mesmerizing footage, It was hard to concentrate on what you're saying XD
I have white clouds in my tank with a heater can I keep neon tetra in with them
Sure
whet is the solid red fish thats in there as well?
😍🥰👌🏼
Mine constantly dig up the substrate. Weird that yours don't touch the sand..
I have never had any type of neon so much with the substrate. Maybe yours are just messing with you. Haha
@@PrimeTimeAquatics haha, both the neons and rummy nose love digging it up, happy Sunday from Ireland 👍
Maybe there is food (algae, nematodes) in the substrate.
@@kaden.slone04_biology definitely food of some kind...
The redness of my neon tetras is orange is that normal or did they lose color, and what does that mean
They can lighten up a little if they are stressed, sick, or sometimes if they are on lighter substrate.
Black neons typically do much better in those parameters.
How come some of them dont have blue and red just tan etc ?
That was a different fish.
Ohh
Why put them with the neon tetras? Bc at other fish stores i see them grouped too
I like you video 😍😍😍
Thank you!
I have 8 Neon Tetras and 3 Ember Tetras which school together that all live in harmony with my male Betta and they all live in harmony
Any ideas for a cold water tank?
LOTS! Video will be coming out soon :-)
What’s that dark red fish swimming around?
8:50
Those were cherry barbs - the males get a very deep red.
I realized my tank water comes in at 6.4 ph. I won't Chace ph. The neons are doing great.
I bet they are!
I have one neon tetras sleeping by itself from the group why??
Sometimes they do that if they are sick. They will separate themselves from the group, or the group will push that fish away.
Rams and neons?.. neons are 74-77 degrees, and rams are best 83-86 degrees,so not sure if recommend it
Neons are often kept with Rams and Discus without any issues.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics respect you guys, but disagree. Cardinal, ember tetras would be a better choice for rams. The higher temperature affect on neons has been well documented.
Can i keep neon tetras in a 5 gallon ?
I wouldn’t but take a look at the dwarf Rasbora, chili Rasbora or Phoenix Rasbora!
