I was impressed by the diversity of schooling fish discussed, each species has its own uniqueness and beauty. Really broadened my knowledge about various types of schooling fish!
I love my rainbowfish!! Mine have been super hardy, they get along with everyone, they have such unique personalities, and THE COLORS when they are fired up! *chefs kiss* Such an underrated and overlooked beauty, thank you for giving them the spotlight they deserve!!
For schooling you need also a kind of ‘danger’ a bigger (peaceful) fish for example. For example the harlequin Rasbora does not school when there is nothing to worry about, they all go explore the tank. Also the longer the tank the more schooling you see when the small fishes travel from one side to the other.
These schooling fish are perfect for many people to add in their aquarium. Cherry Barb is a great one with beautiful colors on its body. The species is known for its peaceful personality, which is good! Thank you so much for doing this video.
I really appreciate how much effort you’ve put into making this video easy to understand and enjoyable to watch. Your hard work truly makes a difference, and it’s greatly appreciated!
Thanks for this fantastic ranking of the best schooling fish! Your insights are super helpful for aquarium enthusiasts looking to create a vibrant and harmonious tank. Great recommendations for all levels of experience. Keep up the awesome content!
Such an awesome video! 🐟 I love how you broke down the rankings-it’s super informative and visually stunning! Schooling fish are so mesmerizing, and this video really showcases their beauty and behavior. Great work highlighting the unique traits of each species. Keep up the amazing content!
I highly recommend anyone with a larger aquarium to get Pictus Catfish, I would say they should be bumped up a few tiers but they also react exceptionally badly to low oxygen water, case in point I lost 8 (all) Pictus Catfish I had kept for 6 years when my aquarium air pumps broke down one night and a replacement couldn't be found soon enough! Silver Dollars won't "can devastate" plants they will. The question is how long each plant will last for. To keep some aquarium plants alive in my aquarium with silver dollars in I have been cycling 2 batched a specific plant (don't remember which species of plant but one that is reasonably resistant to them) in and out the aquarium on 3 month shifts which has worked for me, if you have the space and don't mind the extra work Love Denison Barbs
"Such a great pick for aquarium enthusiasts! 😍👏 Learned so much about the best schooling fish from this video. Thanks for sharing this valuable info in such an engaging way! 🐟🌊"
We had Frontosa for a while, but they were never my favorite due to their shy behavior. In nature they are used to living in very deep water so in an aquarium they can get skittish sometimes, like what happened with ours. I prefer fish that are sociable and come out to greet you, not retreat when you approach. We've switched over to more Tropical/South American cichlids now and so far, we are having much better success. We've got 6 yoyo loaches as well. I absolutely love them. They are extremely playful and silly but the other fish don't seem to mind them very much. Maybe that will change when they reach their full size? (6in). I did also see a comment about them eating the protective layer off of other fish... I have not seen that yet. Hopefully keeping them well fed will prevent this.
I've kept serpae tetras for years. Their reputation for aggression is overblown. Sure, they get feisty with each other, but they never actually do any damage. It's mostly just "showing off." It's more like a competitive sport than mortal combat. On the other hand, I do agree that tiger barbs should be kept in single-species tanks. They are pure evil. 😉
Aggression is curbed with more numbers or larger tanks - however I have to keep in mind there are a lot of beginners and small tank owners who watch the channel so I need to take them into account
A lot of fish on this list I consider more of a shoaling fish than schooling, they may hang together but they basically move from one spot in the tank and sit there for 5 to 10 min, then move to another, as far as moving together and being active, I find Rummynose tetras, Danios, Green Neons, Green Kobotai, the most active and still be chill with other fish, ember tetras aren't bad either, though they are a bit less active, CPD's move around a lot and will chase each other and follow but they have a tendency to do their own think a lot of the time
I really enjoy watching your videos for researching fish. I want to set up a cold water/unheated tank. Could you please make a video of best species for this type of set up?
I actually have a video on the topic. I’ll make a tier list eventually. I have a big backlog of content 😅 - Coldwater Fish: The Best Choices for Your Aquarium ua-cam.com/video/osjRACXN4LY/v-deo.html
Many of the fish on your list are not true schooling fish. They are shoaling fish. Big difference. Also, you should have included discussion of the numbers needed to achieve "schooling" behavior. Even the best "schooling" fish on your list will require a large group if you want to see "synchronized motion." For example, rummynose tetras are known for their "tight schooling," but if you only have five or six of them, you're not going to see it. Eight to ten is a little better, but ideally you want at least a dozen of them to see pronounced "schooling." This large number, of course, has to be taken into account when planning the stocking and species selection for small tanks.
School be schoal is covered in the original blog posts which are more detailed then the video. The video goes straight to rankings which my audience is resonating with. I have an older video with over half a million views where I often got comments about getting straight to the point so the newer content now has less overviews. All schoolings are better in larger numbers and larger tanks. Just not everyone has tanks that large
My cpds are not shy at all. They follow me and beg for food. They feel safest in heavily planted aquarium. Knowing that they can dart back to "bushes" makes them feel and act much braver. In the open water with no plants near by they feel unsafe
Idk if these type of videos are out there or not.... but personally find the tier videos to be very informative. Maybe could we get some videos of say for example popular fish and their tank mates. So say Angelfish or Dwarf gourami or rainbow fish, tetras, shrimp. Say Dwarf gourami and Angelfish are in A team as they'll get along. Or F tier because it's a horrible idea. Was just thinking of content that I haven't seen that as a newer person to the Hobby would find useful. Anyways love the content look forward to more.
Oh I know what you mean like a tier list of tank mates for species. I think I can do that there are some popular videos I have for tank mates but there is no tier list on them. I can get to those once I’m done with this round. I have a few in the hopper right now. I think what I notice is the audience prefers a ranking system over just telling you the different types of fish because the ratings help a lot
🙂 Excellent informative video. My only gripe is it skipped a very common schooling fish, Zebra Danios ? Which is probably more common than any other fish on this list excepting the Neon Tetra ? Definitely more common than Frontosa or Celestial Pearl Danio's ? Because of this I'm giving this video a B+ rating instead of top tier A ?
let's agree to dissagree! The cardinal tetra should be in A, if no in S! Not only for it's behavior, but also because it isn't fragile at all (opposite to what you've said) it is one of the hardiest species i've ever had! Top #1 in my list! Ottos are awesome, yes, but quite hard to acclimate to the tank, usually a 40/50% casualties within the first weel is to be expected, (oh! and they tend to get stuck on the filter's intakes too) that is why i'd give them a C position
That all makes sense to me. Ottos are tough because they are handled bad unless you buy them at a good store like flip aquatics. I love cardinals - my favorite of the neons - though I think black neons are hardier
I absolutely hate hate auratus , they are the meanest , only jewel fishes can withstand their aggression. I've seen people keeping arowana and Oscar with frontosa . Loaches, bengal and yoyo both has a bad habit of eating slime from fishes . I've seen them eating slime from severum , angels , betta and I think it can be harmful to the fishes . Rainbows on the other hand are gems , whether it's three bar , boesemani or dwarf neon .......they are absolutely stunning with not bothering any fish at all . Best schooling fish for community tank , never seen nipping fins . In this video you put so many fishes and so much info 👍😍
Thanks Deathcaster3006. You have been subbed to me for a while. It’s good to hear from you again. The content has gotten a lot better over time. I think these tierlist videos are really hitting it out of the park lately 😊
Octos will be the most compatible with micro rasboras being close but they still could nip at babies. Generally you don’t want to keep fish around if you want to breed
you should add some more fishes like moenkhausia costae the tightest schooling fish you'll find in the aquarium trade and rice fish don't school that much but I'll agreee they'll not need heater nor filter
You could say the same thing for Frontosas but both are in the guise of putting them in an African tank. I don’t encourage people to keep them in traditional community tanks.

I was impressed by the diversity of schooling fish discussed, each species has its own uniqueness and beauty. Really broadened my knowledge about various types of schooling fish!
An absolutely absurd set of fish,
an absolutely absurd table in which completely different fish end up together, and before A there is another line.
I love my rainbowfish!! Mine have been super hardy, they get along with everyone, they have such unique personalities, and THE COLORS when they are fired up! *chefs kiss* Such an underrated and overlooked beauty, thank you for giving them the spotlight they deserve!!
Of course. Their spotlight is well earned 😁
I’m hard to this comment

Good List. White cloud minnows were some of my first fish. I like how they do flashy dances.
Thanks 😊. I love their activity and how they don’t need heaters 😊
This is a very interesting video. Thank you so much for sharing this valuable and informative video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The video is amazing! I love how you ranked the schooling fish. Cardinal tetras are definitely my favorite-so vibrant and peaceful!
Thank you 😊. I think my tierlist videos are bangers. I love seeing the comments from the community it’s really resonating with y’all ❤️

My favorite tank I've ever had was an 80gallon planted tank filled with several types of rainbow fish with corys and otos as the clean-up crew.
This was just the video I was looking for it got so many information and advices. Thanks for posting this video
Great video! Learned about the best schooling fish. The detailed rankings will help improve my tank setup.
Amazing video I would love to watch more videos like this I hope you keep uploading them too
Amazing video! I discovered top schooling fish options. The detailed rankings provided will greatly assist in upgrading my aquarium setup.

White cloud mountain minnow is my favorite schooling fish. Peaceful, hardy, beautiful color, what more could you ask?
I think this is a very amazing video. This video is a really informative and helpful for us. Thank you so much.

The video that i was looking for. Amazing
Thank you :)
Black neon tetra is a great, tight schooling fish. Very hardy and inexpensive. I prefer their more subtle coloration over other neons.
I've kept serpae tetras for years. Their reputation for aggression is overblown. Sure, they get feisty with each other, but they never actually do any damage. It's mostly just "showing off." Nice list. (B)Ghost catfish and (S)Columbia Tetras too
Good additions- I wanted to add ghost catfish but ran out of space for the tierlist 😢
Among These Schooling Fishes Neon Tetra is Looking Amazing 🤠
I like how you display info on the screen in text
Thanks 😊
Really very amazing video thanks for sharing the video

Great video contains too much useful information
I tried to keep it short 😅😆. Unfortunately my upcoming saltwater fish tier list is nearly an hour 🥹
My cpds are not shy at all. They follow me and beg for food.
They feel safest in heavily planted aquarium. Knowing that they can dart back to "bushes" makes them feel and act much braver.
In the open water with no plants near by they feel unsafe
Heavily planted is best for them. Sounds like you have a great setup for them 😊
Thank for sharing this informations with us
You bet!
This video is very excellent
Great informative video... Part 2?
Part 2 🤔. Well I have an upcoming tier list on community fish 😊

Gracias ☺️
Amazing video
Thank you 😊
My cpd's aren't shy at all. They always swim up when they see me: "Feed us, feeeeed us."
any thought about black neon ? I was told they are hardier and schooling tighter than cardinal
I mentioned black neons in this video. They would be an A Tier. Hardiest neon species
Did my boy yoyo loach dirty, A tier minimum personally.
Odessa barbs are my favorite

Fun fact: Silver dollars are actually vegetarian piranhas!
Whaaaaaat 😮
Thank you
Alot of these are helped by a centerpiece fish like a gourami or a peaceful cichlid just to help them school up better
Agreed 👍. Stayed tuned for a tierlist about that too 😁
Wish clown loaches were included in this list, espevially since they were in the background of the video a handfull of times
They would be in C tier due to their size but good schooling fish 😊
How would black neon tetras rank on here? Torn between them and harlequin rasboras
Same as harlequins. Best neons you can buy as they aren’t overbred and hardier versus other neon species
what about crimson hearts and rosy tetras??
Good video
Glad you enjoyed 😊
why do the Cory catfish’s look like a few loach species?🤔
It’s a pretty long video - I may have mixed up footage
Neons are a No for me and German Blue Rams why such a short life span after they feed. Thx for sharing.
You are welcome 😃
The detailed rankings and insights on the best schooling fish are incredibly helpful. This will definitely improve my tank setup.
Do more monster freshwater fish
I need to think about the criteria for that because some get massive 😅
In this video My Favorite Schooling Fish is Tiger Barbs ‼️‼️
Wow that’s bold 😅. Most people have bad experiences with them
Silver tip tetra would have been good on the list
I agree - unfortunately the tierlist only lets me do 30 at a time :-/
The Neon Tetra is definitely my top pick! I’ll definitely be adding one to my tank someday.
Silver dollars became invasive in my region and they literally vanish with the plants. Destroyed the ecosystem.😢
Ya - they will destroy live plants 😢. I didn’t mention that issue in this video but did in another tier list video
Has anyone else experienced aggressiveness from australian rainbows or any else?
I personally haven’t but when I’ve kept rainbows it was in large numbers in large tanks (4 feet long)
Auratus do not belong on this list. They are major bullies and should only be in an mbuna setup.
You could say the same thing for Frontosas but both are in the guise of putting them in an African tank. I don’t encourage people to keep them in traditional community tanks.
Cyprichromis
