I’ve thought the same thing😂. I get so annoyed with current commercials but I like watching old commercials, even find myself still singing them. I love this!!
Back in the day commercials were part of life, and they were fun, always had a happy uplifting song, even the one of I've fallen and I can get up, or the clapper. Today commercials are all about prescription drugs😢
Kurt, a lot of times in your videos your comments have me cracking up. "What an attitude on that encyclopedia kid!" 😂😂 I also, used to watch lifestyles of the rich and famous every week. Champagne 🍾 dreams and caviar wishes!
I can't believe I'm saying this but those were some great commercials! It seems like they really used to know how to keep a captive audience glued to the screen back before pausing/fast forwarding live tv. Awesome video idea!
I love watching the old commercials. Anything is better than the ones they play over and over and over today with the prescription drugs or suing the prescription drugs because they caused problems. Love your channel.
I just started watching your videos and am loving what you do. Growing up in the 80s in a rainy part of the country the, southern California seen in movies and tv, always seemed like the place to be. All the filming locations you show are like a time machine. Not sure if youve done anything on Corvette summer and bad news bears breaking training but they are a couple of my favorites. Great job on your channel!
Same!! My brother thinks its so funny how i can unironicly watch hour long compilations but get annoyed when. The ads pop up. Something about modern ads dont have the same warmth and charm as the old days. Even y2k era commercial are great. Great vid, man!!
I think the special thing about commercials is that they haven't been tainted by repeat viewings over the years. They are always of an exact time and place in our lives and then they were gone.
Another thing was the actual product was the focal point. Today’s commercials are just oversexualized , cheesy, and focus on taboo situations rather than just selling the product.
This was great Kurt. I agree how there is a sadness and fondness for the 80s when you see this stuff. Your room looks awesome BTW. Love the black light effects 👍
7:04 That 7-Up commercial has the dude who played Steve from "Secret Admirer" & Stephen Baldwin from "Bio-Dome" in it. I think it might be the dude from Secret Admirer, I could be wrong, but it's definitely Stephen Baldwin for sure
Just wanted to drop a note that I have been irresponsibly binging through your filming location videos NON-STOP. Absolutely fascinating to me, and I am amazed at how you’re able to find so many spots. Love the way you line up the shots and include the original shots from the movies. Thoroughly enjoying your content! ✌🏻
In the 80s in the UK. Drugstores used to be called chemists. Now they slowly but surely introduced the name pharmacy , So now in 2024 they are all now called . Pharmacy's. Chemists is an old-fashioned word. But what I'm getting at is we weren't told about this.! Why ? 🤔 🇬🇧 .....
Thank you for the memories! I remember a lot of these commercials when I was a kid. I hope you do a part 2. I really liked the Spuds MacKenzie and Bartles & Jaymes commercials. Maybe you can include a few of them next time.
How about the 1988 commercial for the Secret Love soft rock greatest hits album. Where the man and the woman were sitting by the fireplace listening to the songs and he tries to get fresh with her and she shoves him away. LOL This one would play in the middle of the night and it played for years into the 90s. Anyone remember that one?
When the grunge documentary "Hype" came out on VHS in 1997, there was a parody ad on it that was for the soundtrack. It was that ad to T, except the girl and the guy were the most dorky people you could imagine.
There are so many more commercials now. It's a big reason I no longer watch regular TV. The hour long shows I loved as a kid in the 80's were 50 minutes of show and 10 minutes of commercials. Now it's closer to about 40 minutes of show and 20 minutes of commercials for an hour long show. I can't imagine watching any of my childhood favorites with ten whole minutes cut out of the story . Commercials back then were actually fun and watchable. Not so now.
Pepsi had the best commercials in the 80s & 90s. My favorite Pepsi commercial was actually from the 70s I believe, was the one where the kid visits grandma’s house and gets greeted by a bunch of puppies. Great laughter in that one.
There is a trick that works sometimes to avoid lengthy youtube commercials. Click out of the video and click back in. It can reduce the commercials from 30 seconds to 5 seconds. Probably depends how big the channel is.
Wow Kurt, great little compilation of classic commercials. Makes me wanna watch 80sCommercialVault, Dave's Archives, arwuns and Time Travel TV on UA-cam. They do classic commercials compilations, great stuff. Time Travel TV is a UA-cam Channel from the U.K., great stuff there too. Awesome video Kurt
I follow several of those commercials channels. My cut-off is usually 1992 since I barely watched TV regularly after that. I even used to tape commercials, hoping to catch specific ones. It didn't occur to me to just let the VCR record the whole break, but then I'm sure I wanted to save tape.
The guy in the 7up commercial is the actor who played Steve in the 80;s movie "Secret Admirer", I just watched your video on the locations used in the movie
The encyclopedia commercial is the famous parodist Stan Freberg. I believe the kid is his son. Stan had many famous commercials and songs in the 50-80's. He had a much more biting humor than Weird Al does.
Used to actually enjoy watching ads as a kid to see the next new toy or game I could add to my Christmas/birthday list. These days, I'll do anything to fast forward them!
We had a set in the late 80s that my mom scored from some older lady she worked for. Truman was listed as president and JFK was still alive as a senator in that set. Despite being outdated, I used to love reading that set as a kid.
Who can forget Joe Isuzu? First commercial came out in 81 or so. I had a 79 Chevy Luv pickup that was manufactured by Isuzu. Best little truck I ever had and that gutless wonder could 4x4 unlike anything else I have bought upon until the modern era.
Yes, commercials are annoying now because we've been trained to watch TV commercial-free. I do the same thing, I'll watch hours of vintage commercials with enthusiasm.
Friendly's was founded near where i live in Massachusetts. They were mostly in the northeast. Not many around anymore, but there's one within walking distance of my house.
My cousin was trimming trees in Tarzana in the early 1980’s. This gentleman wearing a hat and glasses. He walked by my cousin with his dog. The dog stopped to take a leak on his log splitter. My cousin tapped the dog owner and said, excuse me. Your dog pissed on my log splitter. The guy took off his glasses and says, pardon me. My cousin recognized the guy as being the spokesman for the Jack In The Box commercials. The dog owner apologized and confessed he was the guy on the commercials. It was awkward but kind of cool to meet the gentleman. He told my cousin, jokingly, thanks for your support.
Wow, the Encyclopedia Britannica kid. Fun and interesting fact, Nirvana tried to get him to do the In Bloom video but ended up with Doug Duellen instead
The Coke treasure hunt with Christina Applegate & Richard Greico was the year before the next Coke contest called the Coke MagiCan contest where the cans had spring loaded prizes inside! The contest was supposed to last a month & a half but only lasted like 24 days because they had a ton of problems including kids drinking the water chlorine mixture inside that was intended to keep people from checking the cans by weight to cheat!
I miss jingles being used in commercials period and just the overall effort made to get business. To me that's what made them memorable. I remember all the songs. Now commercials are total bs minus a few. With concepts that dont make sense and a website address thats it.
I was born in 82 so yea, I’m an 80s and 90s kid…I remember all this (although I don’t remember that show Philby either)… I find it interesting tho how it’s totally different growing up on the west coast in the 80s compared to the east coast..But now it’s not so different..I don’t know if anyone would get what I’m saying
Yeah Zellers must have been Canadian only. I used to work at one. "At Ze-e-ellers! Where the lowest price is the law!" That was their theme song. Last ones must have closed about 10 years ago.
I remember beef tallow was used for the McD fries. I was eating their fries the other day and couldn't help but to taste the vegetable oil on them. In the 1990s I bought so many $1 McDoubles! Friendly's was my first job, I was a short order cook for them in 1988.
It's funny that now McDonalds bacon is pretty much burnt to a crisp but in the 80's was a raw chewy mess. They could never seem to cook the breakfast sausage fully either back then.
As a Canadian subscriber, I'm offended Kurt doesn't know what Zellers was. I don't know if they were available in the West or even Maritimes but they were in south eastern Ontario.
The only commercial there that even looked slightly like I might had seen it before was the Encyclopedia one, all the rest didn't look familiar at all. I know often times, commercials that ran could be aired in certain regions, while others played in different places. So even though these commercials are from a time when I saw hundreds of commercials daily, many of these just might not have aired in my area of the country. Normally I say thanks for the walk down memory lane, but sadly no memories here. LOL
Who remembers the Stouffer's stove top stuffing commercials
Nice try 🤣
Loved them
Kraft/stouffer’s and maybe it was under one more brand I can’t remember. The slogan was “Stove Top Stuffing… better than potatoes “ ha!
Back then..... Everything was just So much more Quality driven & So much more Wholesome...
That's the union difference.
I’ve thought the same thing😂. I get so annoyed with current commercials but I like watching old commercials, even find myself still singing them.

Bob Uecker from Mr Belvedere is still living! Hes 90!
The 7-Up commercial had a Baldwin brother in it
Yeah, Stephen Baldwin. It also had 'Steve' (Scott McGinnis) from the movie 'Secret Admirer'.
...gotta luv❤them 80's!🔥😮💯💥👍!
Fun fact: The kid in the encyclopedia Britannica commercials is named Donovan Freberg. His father was the famous satirist Stan Freberg.
I went to his Instagram and asked him how the space report turned out. Now I wait for the good news.
@@robertjohnson4957 Please report back with your findings! 😂

Great video Kurt you rock you should do part 2 of some commercials videos👍📲

Yes! Definitely do it again Kurt!
On it! Thank you.
Yes do all food lol
I loved the 80's Commercials. Who Remembers "Cal Worthington" & The "Go See Cal" Car Commercials on the West Coast ??
Cal Worthington and his dog spot.
I remember him with his cowboy attire and hat I think.
Kurt could probably do a whole episode just on Cal Worthington! And Spot of course!
A jewel. Classic 100%

Loved the little boy singing about his favorite bologna in the Oscar Mayer commercials.
I remember those old Oscar Meyer commercials with the weiner mobile lol.

When I think 80’s commercials, Mountain Dew Country Cool comes to mind, “🎼doing it Country Cool🎼”…….. AWESOME!
7Up commercial @6:45 has Stephen Baldwin(passenger)
I still have those Garfield mugs from McDonald's. Thanks for the video Kurt!

Micro Machines.
Thank you for reminding me of them!!! I forgot about those.
Wish I still had mine. I had some good ones too. ☹️

I think our local commercial jingles were the best.
You unlocked a core memory when you mentioned the round McD's bacon lol
You're definitely keeping it classier than I would have, with no wisecracks about Bill Cosby.

The best Hefty commercial had Don Rickles
Every commercial in the 80s had to have a jingle.
19:00 - Martin Sheen voice-over in the Pepsi commercial.

Beef tallow was a much healthier option, but they wanted to make more profit, so they went with something a lot cheaper and a lot less healthy.
Bro, I had such a crush on Jean Louisa Kelly from Uncle Buck
LOL Joe Isuzu is David Leisure from Empty Nest.
If you're watching a classic show say CHiP's for instance they should have the retro commercials to go along with it.
