When you are a true beginner, your mind is empty and open. You're willing to learn and consider all pieces of information, like a child discovering something for the first time. As you develop knowledge and expertise, however, your mind naturally becomes more closed. You tend to think, “I already know how to do this” and you become less open to new information.

When I asked him how it was going, he said "Damn they're a lot more complicated than I thought!" george martin called him a human metronome; that you could put him to a metronome, leave the room with the metronome and come back half an hour later and ringo would still be perfectly in time. He wouldn't know where they were in the song because he couldn't hear but he'd see John wiggle his butt like he'd do or see Paul shimmy his shoulders like he did and then he'd know "ah, there we are". I would say that the only reason the others could play the song without hearing is because Ringo's drum was keeping impeccable beat behind them.

Then when I got older my grandpa reintroduced me to the Beatles, and I remembered octopuses garden when I heard it again. Coming from a drummer that's played Rush, Police, ELP, Deep Purple for about 21 years now, and has my own album out, he's not a very good drummer. From a musical/casual listener standpoint, he's exceptionally good, and his contributions to the songs were phenomenal. But from a musician's and drummer's standpoint, he's actually pretty bad. If you want to hear actually good drumming, listen to Herbie Hancock's albums, with Harvey Mason, Mike Clark, and Alphonse Mouzon, or any of the bands i listed above. If you want to listen to great music, but not very good drumming, listen to the Beatles. It's sad that Ringo gets gelded like he's the best drummer of all time, when numerous others, like Carl Palmer, Jeff Porcaro, Ian Paice, Tommy Aldridge, and the three i listed above don't get any credit, even though they're vastly superior.

. Neil's style involves a larger drum kit, sure maybe you think Rush sounds awful, but you can't tell me that 'He's not allowed to have that style because uhhh fuck rush you could play tom sawyer with a small kit'.
I doubt a small drum set makes things harder, and I don't think a Neil Peart-sized kit makes things easier, it's entirely up to the drummer and his or her style. By your logic Meg White is the best drummer ever. (Meg is great btw, just a good example) I think you'd agree in the fact that a small kit or simplistic/minimalist style doesn't automatically mean good, and neither does a large kit/complex style.
Really the 'best drummer' doesn't exist, and it's completely possible that your least favourite drummer is someone else's favourite. My personal favourite is Phil Collins, in particular his work with early ("Peter Gabriel Era") Genesis. Lots of people hate Phil and think he's solely a sugary 80s pop-star, I don't really like his solo-work either to be completely honest.

You hear people say Ringo wasn't good, but it usually comes from those who don't play music. If you're a musician, especially a songwriter then you get to understand just how great he was. An amazing song drummer and created some of the most distinctive drum beats in history. Listen to that drum loop on Tomorrow Never Knows, highly creative for 1966 and sounds like it could have been done today. Also, little timing changes in songs like Happiness Is A Warm Gun and Here Comes The Sun, i think a lot of young drummers today would have trouble switching timing like that with such fluidity, or be as tasteful in the fills like in A Day In The Life. If you're a drummer playing in a band, there's a lot to be learned from Ringo about composing drum parts and play for the song, not just yourself. The Beatles were great musicians and writers. I appreciate the practice that goes into shredding instruments like some people can, but i'll take great songwriting over that any day of the week.

Jim Keltner said it best: what makes Ringo such a great drummer was he somehow knew the perfect parts to play in each song that PERFECTLY complimented the song. When it comes to his playing, he had no ego. His goal when laying down a drum track wasn’t to do a million fills that would turn the song into a chance for him to show off. He was just looking to play a part that somehow always emotionally complimented the song the best. Imagine A Day In The Life without those slow, plodding fills. @Mr. Shlock Ever heard of percussion overdubs? They did exist even then. The only one where a session drummer was used was on Love Me Do, their first single, and Ringo had only just replaced Pete Best. George Martin didn’t want to take any chances so booked a session drummer and Ringo played tambourine, as you said. One song. It’s well known Paul played drums on a few Beatles tracks but having now watched the Get Back documentary it’s obvious Ringo is more than capable. His pattern on Get Back transformed it. I’d take the word of all the drummers in the video over yours any day. :-).

Many people are not aware that drummers "play notes" that can change according to where they hit the drum. It was Ringo's ability to play "in tune and in time" with Beatles songs that made him the right drummer. Indeed, I agree with the shares here from the wonderful great drummers in this video that Ringo totally has a feel that's like no other. He knows when to be tight, he knows when to be sloshy. He never played more than he had to yet always had wonderful little signatures that were great hooks to your emotions, to your heart & soul. His style is so wonderfully orchestrated and spot on with what the music is portraying. All these years later Ringo would probably tell me I'm diving to deep, I just play my kit. But I say he broke through the drummer's role and crafted becoming part of the audio landscape. The Beatles never would have ben "The Beatles" without him.
