Ringo aged really well.
Your right. Damn he looks good for a 70 something year old
GreenArrowMC
He might dye his hair/beard.
Shawn Evans He does dye his hair. His hair was turning gray in the late seventies but I mean still. Look at his skin he looks like a 40 year old maybe younger but he's pushing 70+
TheSuperNESman
Well it is how he dresses too.
He looks great. In many ways he looks better now then he did years ago. However, let's not forget he had the benefit of probably 30 minutes in a make up chair before sitting down with Conan
Ringo has never proclaimed himself to be the best drummer ever, which is why it baffles me that some people are so hell-bent on tearing him down. There are a lot of great songwriters and musicians who aren't technically skilled virtuosos. Ringo was part of a band that wrote some of the GREATEST SONGS EVER. There are some people who will be better at playing their instruments than the Beatles ever were, but they'll never make music the way the Beatles were able to!
you sir are bang on the money
I couldn't agree more.
True, besides it's not like all Beatles songs are walks in the park. Some have complexe phrasings.
He never proclaimed it, but people make as if he were the greatest drummer, ever. Worst.
Those people don't know how music works. They typically name that Rush guy as the greatest drummer, and like, yeah okay he can bang out on 500 individual drums in a very weird technical way, but it doesn't SOUND good, or rhythmical. Ringo always sounded good, and he was always functional.
The only people I've ever heard criticize Ringo are not drummers.
Why would we waste breath on any other drummer when we have to make fun of Lars Ulrich 24/7

Roll this way down to up as accuracy and physical actually is harder than go and down .
To dislike Ringo in any capacity shows one being miserable.
Bravo
He ruined the Plastic Ono band.
I like Ringo very much but I am still miserable :,-).
I love how he seems to love joy. I love Wrack My Brain. Adorable video. Catchy tune. I will always be in love with You're Sixteen. A little girl in a grocery store heard Ringo playing and shouted: "Who's that? He sounds FAMOUS!" Cherish that memory.
Nice guy, but most overrated drummer ever.
He is such a simple and mellow man
What a legend
Ringo was perfect for The Beatles. Absolutely perfect. He was a sensitive drum artist .. not a drummer belting, releasing aggression ...
Ringo was deeply humble, he never tried to take over a song, there was never a trace of ego ...
What about the fact that he has a narration of thomas
yeah, theres more to being a musician than simply how good you are at your instrument
the best drummer ive ever recorded was a schizophrenic man who the band had to pick up from behind a dumpster whenever they wanted to record. he refused all help people offered to him, and he was extremely difficult to work with. idk if hes even alive anymore, i havent seen him in years
no successful band would get anywhere with him as their drummer. sometimes you just need someone who will show up on time, play what theyre told to and not muck up the song writing process and rack up your studio time
ringo is a mediocre drummer but when youve got george harrison, john lennon and paul mccartney in a band, youre gonna need at least one of the group to be a normal person lol. and that was ringo
Oh, he got po'ed
I know this is an old video, but I wanted to point out when Pete Best left as the drummer for The Beatles, the band asked for Ringo by name. The Beatles did so many takes of their songs in studio they could always rely on Ringo to have the exact beats per minute the first take and the 50th take, at any point in the song. There are some isolated drum track with Paul's bass which points out exactly how good both of them were, as drums and bass sometimes get buried in the mix, but also the Paul was really Ringo's bass player, not the other way around.
People don’t realise one of Ringo’s strengths is that if you isolate just the drum track on any Beatle’s song you can still tell exactly what song it is.
Joe Bob Especially I Am the Walrus
I saw Ringo on a talk show and they asked if Paul spoke to him much. He said Paul had called him few days earlier and said 'guess where I am now.' Ringo said 'where,' and Paul said 'John Lennon Internation Airport.'
Tha must blow your mind to fly into the city you grew up in and have the airport named after your bandmate because of what you had achieved together.
He doesn't look 74 to me!! I always thought he was younger than Paul

He was the eldest when they formed! Crazy!
+Ian Leo maybe because he's 71 in this video
Yeah but he still looks young
He has such a soothing voice IMO
It is certainly unique. And yes it could be soothing. I used to watch Shining Time Station as a small child (the predecessor to Thomas The Tank Engine) and Ringo played the conductor/narrator. I think his speaking voice is a bit more soothing than his singing voice. That's not to say I don't love it when he sings though!
Correction! He was the conductor/narrator for only the first season and Christmas special. And I was wrong about which came first. Thomas had his own shows before this one. Whoops. 😅. Goes to show how long it's been! Lol
I was at a friends house and his baby brother was watching Thomas the train and Ringo was the narrater

And Pete Best
How was he 72 in this interview and looks like he's 40?
Zach Sweis he dye his hair or something
Sun of Nothing lsd preserves you well lol
In fact he was 71 but looks like he is 41.
Zachary S I remember my father showed me picture of Ringo 10 years ago that was taken at the same time. He said "guess how old he is" I said 44, my dad said he was 67. Ringo Starr, amazing for 77
He looks like hes the same age as Noel Gallagher lol
Ringo being left handed playing a right handed kit is the reason why I love him as a drummer. His fills have a vibe that bring out a color that only he can paint.
I do not care if Ringo is good or bad at drumming because he is perfect.
Because of Ringo, I picked up a pair of sticks. With that being said, I am now going into my freshman year of college as a percussion performance major.Without you I don't know what I'd be doing right now. If you ever see this, just know that you inspired a six year old kid who went on to be a professional percussionist. Thank You, Ringo. Because of you I found a passion that I will always love.
Me Too!. I saw The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan show in the early sixties That was my inspiration to start playing the drums.
Where did you go to school? And I hope they didn't beat the simple musicality out of you. I went to Oberlin and high school music school and it was and is tough to want to add flair and not just keep a simple groove.
I am just so sick of hearing haters saying "Oooh, he's not the best drummer in the Beatles, John Lennon said so!"
That quote is just utter shit. If he was so bad, why did they hang onto him for 8 years? Why did John and George have him play on many of their early albums? Answer me that!
To me, Ringo was massively underrated. He may not be as virtuous as John Bonham or Neil Peart or whatever, but he is still massively important to rock and roll music. He's definitely my favorite drummer out there. Simple, yet very efficient. I think that's a good way to describe him.
GondarthReturns It's rumored that Paul overdubbed lots of Ringo's parts when Ringo left the studio...
Probably not
***** No, the comedian Jasper Carrot came up with that quote in the 80s. Lennon never said it.
***** Have we got any evidence regarding this?
I was just being silly. Ringo and John where very close. Please calm the fuck down.
I have always loved Ringo. He was always the "jokester" of the bunch
yer because the other three were such a serious lot
Astrosquall Were you even alive back then? I doubt it. I was 8 when they hit the US in 1964
No I wasn't alive. but isn't it great how the beatles music has spanned more generations than just one, and inspired younger people to learn more about them?
Astrosquall The Beatles inspired other generations? Thank you Captain Obvious. I was alive then have been a Beatles fan for 50 years. I know quite a bit more about the you probably every will, party because I lived it. My rirst record ever was the "Meet the Beatles" and I went through 2 of them because I wore them completely out. And Ringo was always the jokester. Their onstage personas, with the exception of George, were not a good indicator of their private personas. George, who was always my favorite, followed closely by Ringo, was by far the most introspective and quiet. John was also fairly reserved but gave Brian Epstein fits having to clean up after his often very controversial statements. Paul was more extroverted the John, but Ringo, who was the oldest, was always the most extroverted. Most drummers, myself included, tend to be the most extroverted of the bunch. I think the instrument appeals more to extroverted people, and for most of us, who couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, it also means you usually don't have to sing.
tell me where they were born then
His explanation for his unique style is why during the 60s, none of us playing drums could get his fills down...and we were so frustrated because we couldn't figure out why. It wasn't until we discovered that Ringo is left handed that we began to get a clue.
Yep. If I had known this when I was a teenager-and always striving to mimic Ringo’s “funny little fills,” which never sounded quite right when *I* did them-I would have arranged my drum kit “mirror-imaged” (left-handed), OR at least forced myself to always lead off with my left hand when doing fills.
I just don't get why he had the toms to his right if it was uncomfortable for him. He said he wrote with his right hand and did everything else with his left. Makes no sense for me.
@@CrowClouds Ringo beat time leading with his right hand, but made his drum fills leading with his left hand. Although he was born left handed, he had been forced by his grandmother to write with his right hand. This conformity to majority right-handedness from his youth translated into keeping the traditional drum kit set up which was designed for right handed players. In effect, Ringo overcame being left-handed in a right-handed world and this produced his uniquely distinct style of drumming that can be described as unpredictable and exciting. No other drummer had to face the dilemma Ringo did and that is why he speaks in emotional terms in describing how he played in The Beatles. In effect, his playing was an expression of his own personal struggle.
@@annakimborahpa, BINGO! And, THAT'S what makes Ringo, RINGO!
Ringo is and always has been the most underrated drummer in rock. He played what was needed for the music the Beatles played and that is what music is about. You can't put heavy drums on their music it wouldn't have worked.
For a long as I live, I will never ever EVER be able to hear his voice and NOT expect every sentence to come out of his mouth to end with "...said the Fat Controller."
I never followed the Beatles much, but Ringo always struck me as being a really nice, sincere person.
"Rain" is a phenomenal track. Ringo's drumming is a big part.

I play drums, and have for four years now, and whenever I play a song I will never play it exactly the same way when I play it the next time. Because it is exacly the same thing for me like Ringo said in this video that my drum fills just come when they come, it's through the emotion, the feel and the groove when you drum. Glad to see that such a famous drummer as Ringo Starr also has that difficulty!
+Bobby Fisher I will always keep druming, I love it and do it every day, just listen too drumming soothes me and calms me. And I'm not that bad, it's just when sometimes when I play a song I do forget what kind of fills I used the last time, and not all fills just some fills
+Bobby Fisher you aren't anyone special. I've never heard of you. That being said, don't tell someone who plays music out of love how to play. Nobody tells you how to be the keyboard hero but here you are, blabbering on about vocals or something nobody has ever heard. Leave dude alone. Leave the doubles to Scotch.
alex bro Me?
Ringo had a great sense of dynamics and creativity and how to take an already great song to another level. His drum parts are almost another melodic instrument because of how memorable they are. Who cares about technical proficiency, can you give the song what it needs.
Honestly, Ringo was one of the most underrated drummers ever. On the surface his stuff does not sound all that special, but when you really listen to it critically and pick it apart, he was quite a great innovator.
A thing that surpised me of him is how tight he is live, he never misses a beat.
That left-handed lead but on a right-handed kit is very illuminating. Absolute legend!
Listen to Ringo's playing on "Rain."Then decide if he is or is not an excellent drummer.

kaveman you are absolutely correct.
jerry j I personally think his playing on She Said She Said is better.
She Said She Said, definitely the best song he's drummed on.
LegoLorax dont be condescending mate. Im a drummer and love the performance on rain. Its sludgy and swampy and gives the song a hearty sound

Ringo Starr and the late great Charlie Watts were always my favourite drummers from two great bands.

I'll always know ringo as the guy who voiced the thomas the tank engine eps I watched as a kid, but he was good in that other thing he did.
jokes, he does have a very distinctive voice though. it lends itself well to cartoons etc. not to mention those two most kid friendly beatles songs
i would have always known ringo as the guy who sang 'when i'm sixty-four' very finely, until i learned it was paul sped up a bit. now i know him as the coolest drummer, and one of the funniest guys too.
What I really love about Rongo, he is genuinely transparent. He is so likeable and I could just listen to him for hours.Nice guy all around.
I love Ringo. I read somewhere that when he was with The Beatles, he often felt left out and the other three would work on recordings and what not without him. He's definitly just as important as the rest were. I love all of them but Ringo is and always will be my favorite
I love Ringo Starr but I gotta say, Conan is a phenomenally gifted interviewer. Much love and respect!
He doesn't look 72 here he's like 50 something!
Nah. He looks better than most 40 year olds
a comment that holds true practically 5 years later...
The most ironic aspect of all the idiots who put down the Beatles is that it's a sure bet that whatever band they like, liked the Beatles.
+Nelson Montana Lou Reed didn't. Thought they sucked. So did Zappa.
Richard Venora Well, Lou Reed is talentless and Zappa said shit just to be abrasive.
Nelson Montana Reed was one of the inventors of modern rock; the Beatles just did experiments like Skelter before jumping back to sugary pop.
Richard Venora That is an amazingly ignorant statement, but...okay.
Nelson Montana Yeah, because Martha My Dear, Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Hey Jude, etc.etc. etc. were incredibly hardcore too lol
He is a fantastic drummer. I did not know that he was left handed turned right handed but drums left. What a talent. You really can tell Ringo's drumming. He is one of the top drummers. I also think that Moon, Ginger Baker (what a mad man and talent) and Mitchell are fantastic as well. Ringo's timing for a self taught drummer is perfect!
Ringo looks great for his age in his 70's! He definitely takes care of himself. He played the hell out of his drumming on "Long Tall Sally."

Happy Birthday, Ringo. You're the greatest drummer of all time and The Beatles were the greatest band that every was or will be. Thank you.
Okay, I love The Beatles as much as the next person and I'll admit, Ringo is one of my favorite drummers, but to say he's better than Bonham or Peart is kind of stupid. Then again, it's all subjective, so perhaps I shouldn't call you out.

I love Ringo…but let’s get real “the Greatest Drummer of All Time” come on, man!
"Rain" not only has a killer drum track, but it also has an incredible bassline.
Ringo was and is a great rock'n'roll drummer...he has swing...great feel...timing...he doesn't overplay...Ringo plays the song...he adds fills when and where they are needed. People who think he can't play aren't listening!!!
"She Said She Said" is his best work on the kit IMO
I remember him narrating Thomas the tank engine when I was a kid. The old VHS tapes lol
Hell yeah.
I watched Thomas for the first time when I was two, I first heard the Beatles when I was 4. My grandad told me that the drummer from the Beatles was the narrator and that’s what got me into playing drums
Ringo : witty, fun, friendly, lovable. And the reason why I play drums. Ringo is all class.
Besides their music the Beatles as personalities have got to be the most lovable human beings on the the planet!
I drum naturally in the same way, left handed and right footed, because I set my first kit up 'incorrectly'. If you want to create your own sound, be yourself, don't be taught how to do everything. Music is great for that, cause there's no wrong way to do it! Self teaching is the best way to experience music and I believe gives naturally strong musicianship.
I love you Ringo!
I just watched him on Conan 4/1/2015 and its almost exactly word for word of this interview.
0:58
"so I was born left handed"
"right"
Conan's favorite reply; "right, right." Lol
Ringo is the most underrated famous drummer ever 🔥❤️😎
He's like Hendrix. Hendrix is left handed, but plays upside down a right handed guitar stringed for right-handers.
That's an interesting analogy. Good one!
+Robert Casipe Almost. A right-handed guitar yes, but Hendrix strung it to suit left-handed, meaning that the low E string was the closest to the top. In other words, a right-handed guitar strung in reverse.
+Robert Casipe The only possible way to compare Ringo to Hendrix.
+Robert Casipe A better comparison would be Dick Dale. He was the same as Hendrix but didn't change the strings around. His lower strings were on the bottom of the guitar when he plays. It's amazing when you think about it!
+WillBaxter93 Albert King played that way, too. And today, so does Doyle Bramhall. I didn't know Dick Dale played like that.
He absolutely is. Technical skill be damned, he has changed the face of rock drummer, just in more subtle ways. I've heard him dismissed by several drums, but I still hear his drum solos being played by others every once in a while. Having seen him myself and I can tell you he is absolutely unique.
Always cool. Always down to earth. One of the greatest drummers ever, and a very humble, truly nice man. He doesn't have to "portray" a legend- he is one!
Such a good drummer! If you're an actual musician and not just a music fan, you recognize Ringo's immense talent.
PS: John never actually said Ringo wasn't the best drummer in The Beatles.
I seem to remember John said exactly that in an interview when he was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world,,,, but I'm 72 and maybe my memory is betraying me
@@hellohandsome9875 hey, I could also be wrong. But my understanding is that’s an urban legend sort of thing and John never felt that way or said it. The Beatles could have had anyone in the world as their drummer. Ringo was an integral part of that band.
@@Labyrinth1010 it was a joke the way John said it, but like say, maybe my memory is letting me down,,,, I'm gonna investigoogle, see if I can find the clip

John DID say it, in one interview, But it was a JOKE. You know Lennon and his sarcastic humor. LOL
Even if it is true or not the statement does have some merit. From the top of my head I know Paul McCartney played drums on songs such as 'Back in the USSR', 'Dear Prudence' and 'The Ballad of John & Yoko'. However it was nothing like Ringo could do. His drumming on 'Rain' and 'She Said She Said' is truly brilliant.....and extremely hard to do as well.
True artist. His playing is connected to his feeling.
The drumming on "She said, she said" is mind-blowing.
Yet Neil Peart sites Ringo as one of the BEST ever.
Hmmmm.... Take the word of established craftsmen and stars; or internet warriors.
That's not the reason that people criticize him for.
Is like talking apples and oranges.
I like Ringo for his musical ideas more than anything else because that's what's there to like. Every time I see a criticism of Ringo that part is left out because the critics are looking at EVERYTHING else except that. Which is just circumstantial.
People don't like that he's a minimalist and always find ways to criticize him because he plays out of the ordinary.
I believe that precisely because he was a minimalist Pete Best got kicked out and he came him. That and his ability to get along with everyone and serve THEIR songs.
That's all they wanted. They didn't want Buddy Rich they wanted a guy to fit their band and serve their music and it worked out.
Other Beatles mentioned that Ringo rarely made any mistakes if ever. In part that's probably because he was a minimalist.
All in all, in order to like Ringo I think you have to like The Beatles first.
Don't mean to break your heart but Peart is one of the most inconsistent drummers I've ever watched. One night, brilliant and the next night like he's never sat at a kit before. IMHO............
@@drumavidcheckupz4792 I do like them, except Ringo.
@@justafanintexas7913 Peart BURIES Ringo.
@@joeymorvant161 - That's not saying much because Ringo is more famous than accomplished and spare me the weird synchs he plays - he's a lefty playing a right set-up kit.
i think what a lot of people who are commenting don't realize is that in the time that ringo started playing drummers really didn't have any say in anything musical what so ever. hell the other musicians rarely had any say over it either. ringo was one of the first to come in as an equal and respected part of the band (specifically in rock and roll). if you don't understand that you probably don't have any historical context or background at all.
think of it this way, how many other bands back then even let their drummer come close to a mic? very few come to mind
I can tell from first hand experience that a drummer has EVERYTHING to say about how the music is played from start to finish. I taught this lesson many times to arrogant guitarists who would say "You're just a drummer, be quiet''. They would say this because I would politely try and get them to listen as I tried to set the proper tempo to whatever song we were about to do. And I'd say to myself ''Ok, asshole, prepare to be schooled''. And after a few bars or two I'd start screwing up the tempo and pretty soon the music started sounding like crap and things would come to a halt and then I'd say, "Now, do you want to try it my way''? Timing is everything. In music, acting, dancing, art, life, in everything. never piss off a drummer.
john mcdonald didn't mean it as offensive to drummers. i'm a musician also and finding the right drummer is the hardest part and the most important part of forming a good band.
all i'm saying is that historically drummers were not seen as part of the main attraction.
we now live in a different age though where they are seen as an essential part and part of that is thanks to guys like ringo, keith moon, john bonham, neil peart, etc. who you are pretty much unable to ignore.
What an incredible story his life has been considering the doctors told his mother when he was a kid to enjoy her time with him, because he wasn’t going to make it past his childhood due to illness. He really showed them.
I don't know much about the Beatles - hadn't even seen a video of them until just a minute ago - even though I'm 18 and I've heard about them time after time, of course. I'm just stunned that this man is 74. He look like he's in his fifties (at _most_) and he doesn't sound or act like a man in his mid seventies. It's incredible. I hope I manage to age as gracefully as he has.
It really is incredible what can happen if you put forth the effort to take care of your body and change some bad lifestyle habits.
This is one of the reasons why Ringo is still so famous: because people can't stop debating whether or not he is considered a good drummer, a great drummer, or a not-so-great drummer! XD

Name: Richard Starkey
Alias: Ringo Starr (as his stage name)
Born: July 7, 1940
Birthplace: Dingle, Liverpool
This man was at his prime in the 60’s ...we are now in 2021 ....the man ages like a fine wine
He's fantastic!
Ringo Starr doesn't look 70 he looks early 50's
Is Ringo the greatest drummer ever? No but at one point he was probably the greatest drummer in rock (pre-Keith Moon). Listen to him on early Beatle songs from 63 & 64. He kicked the band in the ass, his tempo was rock solid, & his fills were amazingly inventive. He was arguably the most accomplished musician in the band at the time (along with George). And even after (66 to 69) he has a style & a sound that is still emulated to this day.
***** You are wrong. He didn't play on Love Me Do. Everything else is him.
***** YOU'RE the one who needs to do some research. Ringo is the drummer on 95% of all Beatle songs. The exception being LOVE ME DO which had Alan White on one take & Ringo on another take. And that was only because George Martin had not heard Ringo play so he hired a studio drummer. But once he heard Ringo and knew he could play, then they never used another drummer outside the band again.
The only other person besides Ringo who played drums for them was Paul McCartney. He played drums on a handful of songs on The White Album (when Ringo quit for a short time) and on Ballad of John & Yoko.
***** The question you have to ask yourself before you make those statements is why, in a world where, by your own statement, there are countless drummers, a young band would choose a guy who couldn't play a simple beat. The answer, of course, is that they wouldn't.

I love Ringo. He is so cool
Ringo kept Rhythm with one hand while he did all of his fills with the other hand. This style is particularly evident during “A day in the life”. Yeah, the fills were not overly complicated, but the way he did this would be difficult for most drummers to even understand let alone play. It’s almost analogous to a Guitar player playing the rhythm and lead at the same time.
People rave about the Guitar playing abilities of the Joe Satriani’s of the world, but to me that Guitar style is simply a sterile sound without any substance. Ringo’s idiosyncratic drumming was a function of impulsive interpretation. He didn’t practice the “soul” out of their music by becoming an automated technician, he put soul into their music by developing a singularly unique style that assimilated with their music perfectly. And therein lays the definition of a great drummer!
Pretty insightful stuff there, thanks!
Another example of how something "simple" is easy to play incorrectly, but getting it right is another matter. When Ringo dies, Ringo drums die with him, because nobody else (his son Zak, an awesome drummer in his own right, among them) really knows how it happens. You can get into the technique but getting into the mind is another matter.
Ringo wasn't a typical drummer in that he might have otherwise split his band with his insanity and for that alone he is wonderful. He did end up writing some songs and that's more than most,I think he wrote Photograph and that song is awesome.

octopuses garden: Lennon, MAAAAcc...i forgot the rest of he name
Nico Rudaeff No, Octopuses Garden was written by Ringo. You're thinking of Yellow Submarine.
mmm, i think it was a collaboration betwen george and ringo, chords and stuff by george, but i might be wrong
Beatle salutte!
Nico Rudaeff It's credited to Starkey, I have the album, I'm looking at it. However, I'm sure like pretty much all their songs they worked out all the parts together.
***** No, you are wrong. I have the album. I can look at it right now. It says Starkey. Look it up. Here I will. Oh look, besides Wikipedia agreeing with me, so does Huffington Post, BeatlesBible, CBS, yeah pretty much everyone else knows Ringo wrote the song. Now, unless you're disputing that as a lie, that Harrison wrote it and they lied and said it was Ringo you need to quit trying to "correct" me. Nothing worse than people who are dead wrong acting like they know better. Please, you are probably some casual fan of The Beatles going off little information but yet feel entitled to weigh in because you heard a friend of yours who is equally uninformed say Harrison wrote it. Let this be the end of this discussion. You are wrong.
great interview and insights
Ringo's amazing drum skills can be seen on songs like: A DAY IN THE LIFE, GOOD MORNING, YER BLUES, COME TOGETHER
"COME TOGETHER" IS MY FAVOURITE
I start my fills left-handed on a right handed kit as well, so I understand that plight!
0:32 "I don't wanna get overly tentacle"
he is getting younger every year...happy birthday idol ringo!!!
His humor is amazing and his drumming is so influential
I like conan's comedy, but sometimes I wish he would let the guest finish their sentence before interrupting...
Pretty much any interviewer today in a nutshell.
To be fair, that's not really that kind of interview. Late night is supposed to be a fun conversation, not necessarily an interview.
Stopped signing autographs a few years ago so that his memorabilia auction would bring more money for the signed stuff he has. Classy Ringo.
Wow! How enlightening on his approach to drumming
OMG!!!!!!! thank you forthis piece of info. just made me feel so damn nostalgia crazy!!!!!
He looks better then most 45 year olds.
