Intro to Sumthin sumthin maxwell Gene lake
Wipe Out should have been number one. It's the most recognizable drum intro of all time. This other stuff is very forgettable.
Rick what about 'Run to the hills' by Iron Maiden (recognizable and unique) or 'Painkiller' by Judas Priest (deffinitly a power intro without comparrison)....
Love your work thou
@@wesleycook7687 yes !!!!!! i thought for sure before the vid started. how in the world was that overlooked!!!!!!
Song 2, Come Together, it’s the End of the world as we know it, that thing you do.
I thought all the time painkiller was going to be number 1 🤷🏻♂️ and any Portnoy intro to be on the list, like 6 o clock
6:00 is my absolute all time favorite!
Bigtime miss by Rick!
Honor Thy Father
Mate con mote que haces aquí!!!!, Soy sub!!!!!
Absolutely the first song that came to mind with this topic
Nicely done you guys! I agree with your choices! (For Hot for Teacher you need to mic the kick!)
Agreed. That kick needs to be the star of that section of the song. I think he (Alex Van Halen) was also cheating a bit with the rubber electronic pads.
@David Belanger you get more rebound from a rubber pad.
@Amino Gaming I think he probably did layer 2 tracks of dual bass drums but it wasn't because he was trying to cheat and take credit for doing something impossible, they just wanted to recreate the sound of a powerful idling engine.
Gotta love pros making things look effortless while making me feel inadequate! Time to go practice more.
This guy is addicted to White musicians. When all the genres of music he plays were originally created by Black musicians.
No Excuses by Alice in Chains is often overlooked, just like their drummer himself. Massively underrated!
And disturbingly demonic
Got to be in my top 5 tunes. Good shout.
Don’t forget Angry Chair… one of my personal favorite drum intros
Allen white owner of a lonely heart, a great introduction.
Love the sound Real different sound
Excellent choice. It's one of my favorite drum performances ever and yet rarely gets mentioned among the greats.
Great list of drummers. One outstanding drum opening which was forgotten here is from the song “Stargazer” by Rainbow, and the drummer Cozy Powell
My top position. The first one I thought of.
I was thinking the same thing when I read your comment. How the hell is stargazer not included.
Don't bring me down ELO!
Not throwing the pornhub intro theme onto this list is criminal
honestly Rosanna by Toto is already the ph theme lmao
Facts, just cut it a few beats in. Brilliant.
is Netflix's sound technically on a "drum machine"? lol
My thoughts exactly!
@@clayzonz lol
Whether you like metal or not, Painkiller by Judas Priest has an amazing drum intro
Yeah! I don't get why it's not in here :/
I was waiting the whole video for Painkiller hahahaha
Most definitely
Pain killer or where eagles dare by Iron Maiden
@@sebastianardila7263 same
That was a nice change. I think Honky Tonk women should be on the iconic list. It has immediate recognition from almost all generations. Bill Withers "Use me" intro, tho not as popular as HTW, was pretty signiture to Melophiles everywhere as well.
I know this video is old but I very much think Where Eagles Dare by Iron Maiden deserved to be in there. Highly memorable, hard hitting, very original and absolutely iconic.
YES, totally should be in the list!
First we heard from Nicko McBrain… iconic drummer! Should be here!
Love where eagles dare by Maiden. I agree.
And where’s Run To The Hills…
Surprised “Painkiller” wasn’t even mentioned 😂😂
One of the greatest metal songs ever!
Rick is not a fan of 80's Metal sadly.
Exactly. It deserved, at least, a honoured mention.
Damn good point
Came to say this. 😂
Pornhub intro is the best one
Yes

@Haku 🤡🤡🤡
Rick! Stargazer by Rainbow was one iconic song with a distinct drum intro!
I'd have to say Rainbow's song Stargazer as my favorite drum intro of all time.
An awesome piece of drumming by the very underrated Cozy Powel
Rick: this song is instantly recognizable/one of my favorites
Me: I've never heard this song before in my life
You're obviously just young and kind of ignorant regarding older music. The Police were a HUGE band from the '80s, and I've heard 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic' countless times. That song has over 38 million views on UA-cam.
@@mobus1603 it's just a joke based on the Loki meme.
And many of the songs Rick praises have barely been in my rotation because by the mid-90s I'd heard them enough to last a lifetime and there's always songs ,new and old, I haven't heard yet.
Millennial!
A lot of the songs on the list I did not recognize, but I am not a big rock fan anyway.
I’m right there with you. I knew 9 of these songs. It’s all about what type of music you’re into. I’m sure I could make a list of the Top 20 Jazz or R&B Drum Intros according to my own opinion, and a lot of people would be lost.
Why is no one mentioning “Painkiller” from Judas Priests? I challenge you to have a drummer on that can play that! Best drum intro of all time!
Yes it was. Judas priest... Meet our new drummer!
I came here looking for that comment. That is awesome.
I just commented the same thing before scrolling down to read this.
I remember nailing 70% of Painkiller the first time I used double kick. It's so freakin' hard!
Exactly! How can you seriously not include that..or "where eagles dare" and "the prisoner" by Iron Maiden etc. This is why i usually give this guy a skip tbh.
I like how the drum intro is not always necessarily a fill, but the establishment of the beat. People say, just make a beat, and the song comes around it. This is how drums can be the foundation of a band.
If it didn’t start with a tiny bit of synth, a ridiculously amazing one to add to this list would be the intro that Dave Grohl plays on the Queens of the Stone Age song “Song for the Dead”. That is definitely my favorite drum solo of all time.
ahh so true. Truly surprised this wasn't mentioned

This.
Saw the title and immediately thought, "When The Levee Breaks". There can be no other.
David Levin - No drum intro comes close
I like the way this guy is playing drums! So passionate,it's obvious that he likes what he is doing.Great choices,by the way!
Rick! The second I saw this video come up I thought for sure Led Zep would be on there. Love it
I can not believe that „song 2“ by blur is not on this list. It’s so iconic.
nor Blue Monday

@@bourbon2242 drum machine intro …. Yes. Definitely.
When The Levee Breaks is the perfect drum intro and there's no changing my mind
Gonna need a bigger bass drum.
I completely agree…. But I think Trust by Megadeth should’ve been in the top 20 if not the upper top 10
First one I thought of when I saw the title ...
I was beginning to get ready to criticize Rick when... Oh... It's your #1. OK. However he should have included some of his echoplex explanation video in this video.
@@craighenebury259 Gonna need Bonham, Or his reincarnation Yoyoka.
I just really enjoy watching musicians do their thing. Seeing Rick play all these instruments so comfortably and make it look effortless is a testament to how hard one works to be that good. This was a fascinating watch.
Bob Seger Hollywood Nights drum intro was brilliant. The first stroke of genius with the song was when David Teegarden decided to play TWO drum-parts. At the same time. Tracked separately. He went through the song once and then played against himself for a second take.
Yes. Thank you.
Very hard song
Absolutely amazing
Blur - Song 2 would have been a good one to have in the list. Straight to the point and you know exactly what's coming when the song kicks in

fifa 98! so vintage :D
Okay, he played Hot for Teacher without an overdub. That's insane.
Alex's kit was all roto toms
love seeing ‘i am one’ getting some recognition one of my favourite songs to play ever
In my head, without thinking, 2 drums intro comes to my mind... Rock and roll and We're not gonna take it... They are instantly recognizable I think. Great video and great songs!
"Run To The Hills" who doesn't know that drum beat. Some may not know it's from Maiden but they have heard that drum sound... :O
Where Eagles Dare!
The prisoner
@@lovecraftmusic8717 That's what i was going to say, great song
Jack Jones did an amazing job, despite appearing to be in near constant pain. Hope he gets better soon.
Someone get that man a laxative!
@@godwantsplastic I was wondering what was up with him too, then towards the end I saw that massive key light and I was like, "Oh, I wouldn't look up either."
Just amazing, reminds my youth
Man, I really enjoyed this one! Great content!!
Brought back a ton of memories, especially Bullet the Blue Sky.
Two Princes - Spin Doctors, instant classic drum intro!
That one was my immediate pop-up from memory......
Wow yes. That song is great fun
I love that song, I didn't even think about it starting with drums. Great group too.
I replied as well and added Two Princes. Glad to know people still enjoy that group. The drummer is excellent.
Good call!
The drum intro to Iron Maiden’s Run To The Hills should’ve at least been an honorable mention, along with Judas Priest’s Painkiller and Megadeth’s Rust In Peace...Polaris.
and we want to talk about the intro of Where Eagles Dare? That is a "Really" drum Intro! Idk why iron Maiden are never mentioned on this channel. Greetings from italy!
@@ciccio_pa7592 .
I know. I ask this question all the time too.
I guess iron maiden is a little too heavy metal for Rick.
Yes, Where eagles dare needs to be on the list, but if it comes to 80s Rock and Metal Rick is like: "count me out".😅
Something tells me you like metal
To me, Trust is Megadeth's top drum intro, but I'm with you on Painkiller and Run to the Hills.
Fantástico. From ARG🇦🇷. GRACIAS por el material que compartis. Larga Vida al Rock. PEACE & LOVE🎸🎸🎸
In the air tonight!!
Very surprised Iron Maiden 'Run to the Hills' didn't even get a mention. Or Judas Priest 'Painkiller'
Phil Bradshaw Agreed. What about where Eagles dare
@@Kyle-bw3du : "Where Eagles Dare" is an absolutely killer drum intro.
I'm a Clive Burr fan and he definitely deserved a place in your list.
Seriously, Painkiller is such a legend that it makes the song instantly recognizable after half a second of that intro.
Run to the Hills was honestly the first song I thought of when I saw the title of this video
Rainbow stargazer was an amazing drump intro, an entire journey in itself, but that era was pretty hard to choose from
This is what immediately came to mind. Epic intro.
Absolute legend intro by Cozy Powell 🎵
I was thinking 'Long Live Rock and Roll'
Amen!
Great share
I recognized almost every intro, lots of memories of trying to get them just right. Great riffs.
I might not agree with your 20 top selections Rick in terms of the order, but I LOVE you put it out there. In other words, good job, keep on doing it!!! ❤
"My Hero" by the Foo Fighters. That opening is HUGE!
I'm amazed I had to scroll down this far to see someone suggest this. I was amazed that he choose "Scentless Apprentice" over "My Hero"
I was *shocked* that this song wasn't on the list. Tragic.
You can't go past the opening to Hey, Johhny Park! too
I’m amazed that you don’t know it’s 2 separate drum parts. How can you guys not know that? Smh
Exact same intro as Scentless Apprentice
Song 2 - Blur
Bonus, it's really fun to play.
Yes, I play air drums perfectly to this one.
Thoroughly enjoyed that..... I'm no drummer..... But I know what I like. Cheers.
You rock candy always had a killer groove connected to it’s rough guitar riff
Painkiller, Judas Priest - eats all of these intros. Arguably the most iconic and recognisable Metal intro of all time.
For sure, also Rush's By Tor And The Snow Dog!!
@@robertosharplesshecht7805 Hey Bob, you are heading that way dude! Every day that passes.
After about a dozen comments I went to UA-cam and checked it out. Your are all correct, intro to Painkiller is killer.
I'd throw Over the Mountain by Ozzy on that metal drum intro list for sure.
Cozy Powell's drum intro for Rainbow 's Stargazer is phenomenal,it should be in this list
Definitely should be on this list.
hell yes
Rainbow is totally underrated in the USA
Was on my mind also

Эх, несколько дней эту же идею хотел высказать! Опередили меня)
It's very cool to see Rick Beato actually playing on the video! 🎉
Judas Priest's Painkiller is a must have and King Diamond's Welcome Home is another gem. Spin Doctors' Two Princes is a signature intro so unique that defines the song like none else.
Finally someone says it. Welcome Home is so good!
@@serpenth616 It does not even repeat within the song again!
I would also add SOAD TOXICITY, despite the fact that the drums join later, a very powerful drum beginning
For any metalhead, Overkill is a must! Yes I know it's not technical but so very recognizable and takes you in immediately 🤗
Yes Welcome Home is so great. And I'm not a huge Nickleback guy, but Follw You Home drum intro is badass
I know “iron man” is a simple kick but the moment you hear it you know
sounds like a door closed by someone repetitively ;-)
@@xavier4728 sounds like my life
@@xavier4728 No it doesn’t.
Yes, BUT as soon as the REAL drums come in around 30 seconds into the song, I HAVE TO NOD MY HEAD
Also sounds like, "Go to hell" by Nashville Pussy.
Free. All Right Now. Simon Kirke really sets the tone for this all time classic with his fabulously simple intro!
Hey Rick! I just got done watching your 20 greatest guitar solos of all time video! You diamond yourself out because you couldn’t hit the cord on the veil Van Halen song that went from like the 12th fret to the 16th Brett and I thought to myself no one other than about five musicians in the world would’ve known if you had a cheated and played a different chord! L O L but once again, it’s uncanny how much are taste in music overlaps because you love basically all the music that I love having been born in 1954! Also, one of the great pleasures of watching the video was checking out all your different guitars which are absolutely amazing! I give my eye teeth to own one or two of them and your collectionIs absolutely astounding! Please keep the videos coming and I’m working through your courses online and they’re phenomenal to Rick!!! 😎👍👍👍👍
This discussion begins and ends with When The Levee Breaks
Exactly.
John Bonham I'd rather say
The God of drums! And The Crunge should have been in there too. :)
Bonham in general for sure. I thought Moby Dick might sneak in as an honorable mention.
To me, thats just the drum beat starting the song, which unfortunately is alot of whats in this video. Something like D'yer Mak'er has an actual intro part for the drums, separate from the beat of the song.
Iron Maiden- Run to the Hills is another instantly recognizable drum intro.
Fantastic intro
YES
I would say where eagles dear
where eagles dare is a good one too
THE PRISONER
Excellent list
Awesome list. One notable is missing: Over The Mountain by Ozzy Osbourne.
Also, Aerosmith aficionados know that Walk This Way isn’t even close to Write Me when it comes to drum intros.
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Rainbow - Stargazer
It's a crime against Cozy Powell that Stargazer isn't on Rick's list.
Painkiller was the first song that came to mind
No one is mentioning Eyeless, give Slipknot some Love!
@@ammarD Not sure the Amen break really counts.
Stargazer! Good call
My first thought was Iron Maiden - Where Eagles Dare, totally iconic and instantly recognisable.
Or painkiller by Judas priest
Not a popular song, but you should check out Varga - Greed for a cool drum intro.
Own first thought was We Will Rock You. Simple? Yes. Overplayed now? Yes. But sometimes something simple which strikes such a chord (ironic considering the lack of any rhythm guitar, heh) that it's played decades later are like that because of how great they are. EVERYONE knows what song it is after the first two drum hits and are ready to join in with the 'stomp' STRAIGHTaway!
Not a well known song
Run to the hills?
I love "i will remember" by TOTO.. killer drums intro and all the way to the end.
"Play That Fast Thing One More Time" by Rockpile is one crazy song with Terry Williams' drum intro. all out fun track.
I notice a disgusting lack of “Never gonna give you up” by Rick Astley
Hysterical!
Booooooooooo
@@DCAbsolutJohn1 ooooooooooß
Well played mate, well played
@Big Poppa making Larry David jealous eh?
"NO Excuses" Alice in Chains honorable mention. Really kicks off the acoustic guitar groove.
I thought the same Sean Kinney is an amazingly underrated drummer, him&Matt Cameron along with dave Grohl are all amazing drummers,I love Charlie Watts,Stewart Copeland&Remi from the Stone roses,But the King of all the drummers 4 me is of course Mr John Henry Bonham may he rest in peace🙏💕🤘💜

Totally agree!
Needed to see this.
That was fun. Perfect stocking stuffer for the guy that has everything. Give him a moment in time. Agape
Money for nothing is also missing. It is iconic!
No Excuses by Alice in Chains is the most memorable one for me in the last 25 yrs
Not just the rhythm, but the tone is instantly recognizable
The original album version and the Unplugged version are both fantastic!
Totally with ya there. At least honorable mention, in my book. Ah, well that's the coolest part about music. So much to choose from, no?
My all time favourite drum intro
Totally agree
Godsmack too..
Why is Song 2 not even in honorable mentions, the entire beginning is just drums carrying the song with a cool and inventive groove
Meme boi G this was actually the very first song that came to my mind when I read the title of the video..
Meme boi G I thought the exact same when I saw the title and thought that song 2 had to be on here
WOOOHOOOO
I know right was waiting for that!
But then I've never heard of Blur in his channel yet...
@@noursarhan8695 It's Blur's only good song. But we can forgive them b/c he went on to create Gorillaz.
Power Station's "Some Like It Hot" has an amazing intro, created by Duran Duran's Roger Taylor and recorded on the album by Tony Thompson. Includes a perfectly timed cymbal mute
Parts of this drum intro are double tracked
I just subscribed to your channel. Love the lists. Here's some one I think that needs to be included in your drummers lists. Tony Thompson was truly a great drummer who played for the likes of Nile Rodgers and Chic, David Bowie and of course The Power Station. He definitely had some great intros, fills and solos and surely some almighty grooves. Take for instance Power Station's Some Like It Hot (Nice intro and fills), Go to Zero, Get It On Bang a Gong (killer intro fill), Lonely Tonight and Communication. Those included great drum intros, nice groove and fills. David Bowie's Modern Love is also another great tune with Thompson's work. Also his work with Chic includes songs like Rebels Are We, Soup For One, Everybody Dance (has a killer groove), My Forbidden Lover (another killer groove). Come to think of it he could at least be an honorable mention in most of these drum categories.
Nick Mason's Intro to Pink Floyd's Time. Now THAT'S an Iconic Drum Intro.
YES
That drum intro is so good it spans time and space... Pink Floyd is outta this world
If you count the paper tearing and cash register sounds as “drums” money would be sick too
Technically...there's no drum intro to the song Time. Bass, guitar and synth come in first, and the drums dance around the landscape they make. The part just before the lyrics is not an intro, as the song is already 2 minutes in. But...yeah. Play or even mimic that drum lick and many people would involuntarily sing the first line.
More of a "drum opening"... probably the only one in its category
I love the intro to “No Excuses” by Alice In Chains.
What about Angry Chair?
Came here to say this.
Don’t Follow. First song I learned on guitar.
@@brennenfitzgerald I love Don’t Follow, but it doesn’t have a drum intro. In fact, the drums don’t come in until that fast section of the song when Layne comes in. Also I don’t think that song would ever be on a list like this because unfortunately it isn’t very popular. Such an underrated song.
@@mr.noride7226 True. Should be in the guitar intro list, but hardly anyone knows it.
I love the cowbell! Anytime I hear it in a song I’m just right there.
I am totally enjoying your Top 20 videos. How does We Will Rock You fit into your mentions for drum intros?
Can we stop to appreciate how many instruments rick plays lol
ONE. I'd settle for playing ONE as well as he does, and he plays all of them. I'm insane with jealousy.
You just need to learn one of each family member and you'll be able to play anything. Learn the guitar, and you'll be able to play bass, electric, violin, viola to a certain degree. Learn piano and you'll be able to play keyboards, marimba, xylophone, organ to a certain degree.
Yes, agree. Love these lists.
Martin Anthonio16 guitar won’t help you at all with violen. It might even make it worse.
Yessss... HERE HERE BRAVO ENCORE ENCORE!!!
Safaris, 'Wipeout'. Every aspiring drummer in the 60's made a point of learning it.
IN the 60s? LMAO!
SINCE the 60s, EVERY drummer makes a point of learning it.

Hot for teacher had Eddie Van Halen’s Lamborghini idling in the intro, so well done replicating it with real drums.
Also , glad you put Sunday bloody Sunday in there, I was waiting for it.
Dreaming by Blondie ! The intro was great and the drumming thru out was both rhythmical and melodic ! The drumming in that song sings !
And Union city blues 👍
My thoughts exactly
Props to Jack for mastering all those different styles!
When the Levee Breaks is the first song that came to mind when I saw the Title of the Video. A lot of great choices in the Rundown. Real drums add so much life and feeling to songs as shown in the Top Song as it is essentially the Lead instrument throughout the song. I love certain Solo Artists, but a Band with a great Drummer is something to experience.
You could probably do a top ten of Bonham alone.
When The Levee Breaks was literally my first thought too 🤣
How could I ever forget that song? Led Zeppelin IV was our holy grail...
I've read that that drum intro is the most sampled piece of music of all time
Loved this! But glaring omission on this list is "Sing, Sing, Sing" with the fabulous intro (and fills throughout) played by the great Gene Krupa! (The man who invented the backbeat in the 1930s!!)
50 ways and Sunday Bloody Sunday are my absolute favorites!
Stargazer (Rainbow) and Fireball (Deep Purple) are the best drum intro songs for all the time.
Agree!!! Rainbow Rising....
I really thought it would be in this list. This is really disappointing, not because it's not in their, but cause there are 2 u2 songs :/. Not even pink Floyd's time....
Fireball is another good one by Deep Purple. Pictures of Home is the drum intro I always think of for them
I agree. Both of these songs are serious oversights.
STARGAZERRRR YES!! I have a video on my channel of that.
Other ones that could've been there:
Painkiller
The Crunge (or any zeppelin one)
Rust In Piece
Anthony Vergara Literally whan I thought when I saw the title!
great list! Some other favs.... Digital Man (Rush / Neil Peart), Rock With You (Michael Jackson / JR Robinson), Fred (Tony Williams), The Crunge (Led Zeppelin / John Bonham), Other Arms (Robert Plant / Phil Collins), Murder By Numbers (The Police / Stewart Copeland), Rock of Ages (Def Leppard / Rick Allen), Lowdown (Boz Scaggs / Jeff Porcaro), Physical Presence (Level 42 / Phil Gould), Three Little Birds (Bob Marley / Carlton Barrett)
Beatiful list. As every list, you will always feel something is missing. In this one I think the drum intro that should have found place is "Lasso" from the Phoenix.
ZZ TOP La Grange, sticks on the rim of the snare, totally recognizable, blockbuster hit.
LaGrange by Rock & Roll Hall of Farmer Frank Beard of ZZ Top is in more commercials, and movies than any others on the list, hard to believe it’s not on the list let alone #1.
@@jelmo1057 This song was really originally a John Lee Hooker number from 1948 called Boogie Chillen'. Slim Harpo's Shake Your Hips from 1966 has a similar beat. To me, The Rolling Stones version of Shake Your Hips from Exile on Main Street ( 1972) has the most similar drum part, almost exactly like ZZ Top's, which came out a year later.
Damn good call. La Grange should definitely be on here
@@ryanjones4150 But nobody, but nobody does it like ZZ Top. They are KNOWN worldwide,as is this drum intro, and the others that recorded this, not so much. I respect John Lee Hooker. However, ZZ Top was/is a three man band that conquered the world. RIP Dusty Baker
" Gimme all you lovin' " from ZZ TOP you mean... La Grange doesn't start with drums ..
I totally agree with you. Awesome video bro!! I actually love your videos. I just subscribed. 👍
Take 5. From the Dave Brubeck quartet. The whole album Time Out has very interesting rhythms but Take 5 has an awesome drum intro 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁
Too true. What a great performance by Joe Morello! Awesome sound as well.
Yes, quite surprised Joe Morello not on the list. Glaring omission.
Take Five also has a brilliant segment featuring the drums at the last part of the track.
“Watching the Detectives” Elvis Costello should have at least gotten a mention.
Good choice! That’s a great one!
1976 : a young, but already well reputed session drummer played on lowdown, on Boz Scaggs' Silk Degrees. One of my favorite drum intros. Among the other session musicians : David Paich, David Hungate.
Yes, you got it! The drummer was Jeff Porcaro.
Another great intros :
- mama by Genesis with harsh, heavy, and haunting at the same time drum machines.
- scatterbrain by Jeff Beck
- the badman song by Tears for Fears (Manu Katché)
Yeah scatterbrain !
Great list. 2 I'd insert somewhere....
Trust - Megadeth
I Love it Loud - Kiss
And 2 that are exactly the same but are wonderful...
Albatross - CoC
Balls to the Wall - Accept
