It's clear that araki isn't a big fan of anything in part 1 that isn't Dio, (and the name zepelli I guess) so I'd say he's literally there to make fun of Jonathan's "punch first, think last" philosophy
Kinda underplays some of the crazier aspects of FOTNS, like Kuroyasha the elderly black ninja dwarf, Xie the Crab Man with a verbal tic or Kaioh summoning his last bit of strength by asking his mother's grave to defeat Kenshiro and then a geyser of water shoots Kaioh up into the air so that he may deliver an aerial strike to Ken.
I had the privileged of apprenticing under the creator of Fist of the North Star, Tetsuo Hara, from 2005-2007. I was an assistant illustrator on the FOTNS prequel, Fist of the Blue Sky. We actually shared a studio with City Hunter's creator, Hojo-sensei. It was amazing to be surrounded these Shonen manga legends... but the life style was completely insane.

In Ginga Nagareboshi Gin they just initially bark as humans are the main focus, but after like 5 episodes or so the emphasis changes to the dogs and they start talking. I mean, humans in the series don't understand them, but you know, 20 episodes of just barking wouldn't be that fun. In Ginga Densetsu Weed (shown in this video) they talk from the start but really, Ginga fans don't really like Weed as much as the original anime. But yeah, prepare for alot of dead dogs and blood.
The change in Jump is similar to Kung fu movies in a way. Kenshiro is like Bruce Lee, how he inspired heroes who are virtually invincible and made some knock offs. Then comes Dragon Ball. Goku being Jackie Chan in which you get a comedic hero who gets his ass kicked, but learns to become stronger in the end.
I don't want to be that guy but if you read the manga you'd know Kenshiro got his ass kicked multiple times and came back stronger... like that's even in the first chapter.
in part, because jump has diferent fight series since the begining (late 60s), also jakie chan loss many times dying in many films, while goku just came back like jesus 100 times.
I'd like to point out that Saint Seiya's contributions to shonen didn't go unappreciated in the West. maybe in the US but in Latin America it is absolutely LOVED. And some countries in Europe too.
Saint Seiya's plot focuses on the corrupt degeneration of the pope, which is foreign to the predominantly Protestant United States. But it is popular in Latin America and Europe because they are mostly Catholic

This is probably my most re-watched video of Eyepatchwolf's, the history of this publication is fascinating. Loving insight on what exactly worked with these different series' and what the public demanded back in that era, I really hope he continues with these. I would love any sort of retrospective on Shonen Jump's competitors (Weekly Shonen Magazine and Shonen Sunday) cause I think its worth a video on them trying to keep up with Shonen Jump's towering rise in popularity.

I absolutely adore anime youtubers who take the time to explore classic franchises and just exclusively focus on what's new or what's in the period between the early 2000s and 2010s and that's a huge reason why you're one of my top 3 favorite anime youtubers ^_^ As for hugely underappreciated animes,I highly recommend Iganu Kabamaru,I still remember fondly my time with it watching the series when it got an arabian dub of all things here in the middle east during the early 90s and to this day I still go back and watch it while still having a good time with it
This was really interesting! I also got some of those Jump reprints out of curiosity, and it's a fascinating read to see what kinds of series come into serialisation at what times. The idea of the softer, more shojo artstyle allowing a wider range of viewers was something that continued especially into the 1990's. I think I remember seeing that there was a rise of 'bishonen' characters around that time to tap into that market. Demographics are fascinating.

It also kinda blows my mind how Dragon Ball ran for 11 years, it's like hearing that the Beatles were only for 10 years a group I mean 11 years is long, but when you consider the age that something like One Piece has, it's kinda crazy how the source material of the biggest manga/anime out there ran for just over a decade
@Shaman Xeed Dragonball is 194 chapters. Dragonball Z is 325 chapters. I've been alive for the full run of several of my favorite manga that have been less than 300 chapters. Try again.
@Shaman Xeed Actually the English release did separate the two parts into Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z in the first release of the manga. While you are correct in that there is only one manga series, it's entirely possible the version he read and is familiar with was split in to two.

The "edgy protagonist, not family friendly" trend started way back in the 60s mainly as a result of the student rebellions of the time. Osamu Tezuka talks about it in the beginning of Astro Boy volume 19. Series like Ashita no Joe & Devilman from the 70s featured characters that had both manly elements and soft elements, visually and in terms of personality.
Tezuka has also been challenged by this at the moment, and the outside world has suspected that his style derived from Disney is outdated. The Black Jack who finally revived his momentum is also the style you call it: "edgy protagonist, not family friendly"
I love Saint Seiya I grew up watching it, now that I live in New York City I can easily make conversations about with people from Brazil, France, Mexico, Turkey my native Peru and now that Netflix is bringing it back I can't wait to watch it with my son
For whatever unknown reason Gin's anime became hugely popular here in Finland. The manga cover at 15:16 is even the finnish release. 2 or so years ago when I went to a con in Tampere there was a section dedicated all for just this series.
So one of my friends told me about this time he found this dog anime by accident that involved a dog trying to fight a bear, only watched one episode, forgot the name, and never saw it again. My friend told me about this years ago, and now here I am, watching this, and thinking "holy fuck, that's the dog anime Patrick was talking about!"

My thoughts exactly! Saint Seiya is very popular in Latin American countries and in Europe (France, Spain, Italy, Portugal). The US only got the anime adaptation a decade later. That is probably the reason it didn't caught up in English speaking areas.
Saint seiya fist of the north star and city hunter were the big 3 in france in 1989 before dragon ball. Cat's eye, by city Hunter's author, was also very popular before that, but didn't air on the same channel. It aired on the channel that made cobra, grendizer and Versailles no bara popular. The first generqtion so to speak. Saint Seiya merch was HUUUUUUGE ! A lot of nerdy dads still have original collector mythcloths from that era ! Even small supermarkets from my small island sold mythcloths. A friend of mine had one and came home with it. SS toys, SS candies and gums. It was everywhere. Not to mention SS posters and original artworks sold in the weekly official magazine. Later dbz started to grow dragon ball's popularity, which was already considered number one after only one year on tv (september 1988, 2 years after japan.)
Fun fact, Ginga Nagareboshi Gin was (is) actually very popular in Sweden and Finland. In Sweden it was one of a couple of animes, like Genshi shonen Ryu and the Toei Animated version of Puss in Boots, who got a dubbed version and was released on VHS (this was back when videostores was all the rage, and seeing how animated movies (like Disney) was popular with kids, some companies bought and dubbed anime to cash in). Although here it was known as Silver Fang.

I'm from a small town and in our library there was Ginga, Candy Candy, Grand prix and Two Years' Vacation. And ofc Ginga was the most popular of them all. :)
i got so excited when you started talking about ginga! it was my entire childhood. it's a cult classic in finland and apparently other nordic countries as well. very overlooked series!
I don't mean to be rude but you have a lot of people watching you so I'm sure others will use your vid as a reference when it comes to certain perceptions of the 80s series you mentioned & I wish to clarify some misinformation. I'm assuming from the heavy usage of 1986 movie & the clip of Kenshiro vs thug fight, that you haven't seen/read the series in its entirety. While Kenshiro is an invincible manly symbol that's just the surface level of who he is. Ken did lose fights & failed to save lives. Much of the problems of the series was it's beginning as many foes weren't any match for Ken but even as early as chapter 10 it created a very tragic event for his character. He would later be joined with allies Mamiya, Rei, Shu, & others but many of Ken's friends & family would permanently die. With the appearance of villains like Raoh & Souther that's when the series takes a sadder tone even forcing Ken to learn a new move which determines the outcome of his final fight with Raoh. Admittedly, the series overstayed its welcome from Fist Of The North Star 2 & corresponding manga chapters, Kenshiro is more than just the tough guy beating up bandits, he's a very sad person who's often compared to Guts during his black swordsman days. Even when Ken finally wins he's left with no one at the end of his journey. He saved the world at the cost of his happiness.
Well said dude. My mind was blown when I watched the Fist of the North Star movie as a kid and it opened with Kenshiro being defeated and ended the same way with the Raoh fight. I had pre-conceived notions of Kenshiro being a cheesily overpowered Bruce Lee clone who had nothing more to him than just punching anything that moves to death.
A big problem with Eyepatch Wolf's fandom is the fact that because the presentation of his videos is consistently at such a high level, people automatically take everything he says as the truth even if what he says is factually incorrect. This has happened numerous times, most clearly in his video about what makes a hero feel real.
There are already dozens of comments with hundreds of likes in that video which go into detail, it's not hard to find them. So much so that Eyepatch Wolf even left his own comment admitting to his mistakes.
We can also see that popular modern manga, like say, My Hero Academia, sort of reflect that clash between young underpowered protagonists and the invincible heroes of yore, with for example Deku's relationship with Almight
or how american comics fused with japanese ones(and viceversa),the most obvious case being the change between Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball z and the million homages to super heroes the latter had
i think the reason stories like My Hero perform well in this generation is due to the target demographic being much more self-conscious and attaching more to a relatable struggle over a wild fantasy. its nice to see a character forced to grow by their own choices and not growing for the sake of power scaling. of course, SAO is popular, so obviously wild escapism still has a market...sadly.

You have no idea how exciting it is to hear someone outside of the fanbase actually talk about the Ginga series. I would love to hear more of your thoughts on the series once you've explored it more. It definitely isn't a ground breaking series or anything but it is a lot of fun start to end.
An interesting fact about the weed manga and anime is that it was somehow very popular here in Finland, as it ran on finnish tv along other childrens programs. Everyone my age (20) is familiar with it here :p
The dog from the manga you mentioned Ging is in Saint Seiya and so is the bear antagonist! I wasn't expecting to have a revelation like this watching. It's in the Asgard arcs Fenrir fight, Fenrir was rasied by wolves and Ging saved him from that bear which also killed Fenrir's parents! Same name, same scar, same giant bear. If it's not a direct crossover its a perfect copy.

Ginga Nagareboshi Gin has a huge fandom in Finland, The cover of the manga volume you showed was actually the one published in Finland. But the opening you showed was Ginga Densetsu Weed, which is sequel series about Gin's son. Yeah the opening is good but the Gin's own anime and atory is much more brutal and epic, most of the English if not all rips are from Finnish origin and have some Finnish sectences on the subtitles here and there. But please make yourself a favor and go to see the original Ginga Nagareboshi Gin (Silver fang) opening and its soundtrack. ❤❤❤ The creator is also aware of his Finnish fanbase and has travelled here quite of a many times :'>

It is pretty sweet that every person you meet in the "swedish anime community" loves the show. Everyone has a connection to it somehow, cause it was THAT show that kinda started it all for us. And the people who hasn't seen it always has friends that pushes them to see it. The show is that much of a cult classic! Guessing it's the same over there? Saint Seiya's contribution to shonen wasn't undervalued in the west, just in the English market. Latin America loves saint seiya to the level that the figures here are imported and pirated to death.
Saint Seiya's amazing or as it is know in the west as Knights of The Zodiac or in all of Latin America as "Caballeros del Zodiaco" Heck, we even got the Lost Canvas Ovas dubber over here, and I think the US still have to dub it in english : /
I i'm not mistaken USA made an "adaptation" of Saint Seiya, censoring the blood and changing certain things of the plot, making it an awful show. what a shame.

They censored crosses, turned blood into sweat, made Seiya into a jackass, Shiryu is perpetually blind from the start and Hyoga is a surfer poet dude who wants to rescue his mother from an evil spell that left her concience trapped in another dimension and Athena is a valley girl.
Please cover/review Silver Fang/Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, the series deserves more recognition. It's basically Fist of the North Star but with Dogs and it's got a pretty interesting story too. Also, about Fist of the North Star, it's not exactly a power fantasy, since Kenshiro isn't 100% invincible, he lost a lot of fights throughout the series and had to learn to discipline himself as a result.

I think it's interesting how the rest of the world has never heard of Weed/Ginga and the other series by the same mangaka, since in Finland, where I happen to live, they belong to the classics that exposed many kids to anime for the first time. It even aired on TV dubbed which is something that doesn't even happen with the most popular series nowdays. And even back then even Sailor moon never got a tv run. I'm not sure why it was such a big thing here (and still is, to a level, since one the mangaka's series is still being published here).. but I'm glad it was and rest of the world has missed out on some great stuff.

I nearly cried when you mentioned Gin! My god does that series need so much more exposure! Personally for me the only shonen show in my opinion that sort of ripped that off is Makibao, another shonen manga about a tiny horse competing in horse races. No idea if it was in Shonen jump though, it is a great part of my childhood.

It's always strange to hear that Ginga Nagareboshi Gin isn't widely known, as it's so hugely popular here in Finland. Anyway, this was a great video. Jump is a fascinating subject, so any new information is always welcome.
Saint Seiya still is the second most popular anime here in Brazil, after DBZ. Everyone around 20-30 years old knows it. Hell, even up to this day you can't go to a anime convention or something like that without seeing people dressed up in Saint Seiya costumes or singing it's theme song (being honest, it's Brazilian theme song it's simply amazing, if you understand Portuguese do check it out). Not all of the West doesn't appreciate it's influence, as here in Brazil it basically kick-started the anime fandom

Great Video! Always love these more history oriented ones. One thing I find funny is that Saint Seya is as big, if not bigger, than Dragonball in Brazil. But as influential as it is, in most videos from other western countries it's rarely mentioned.

Seriously, Kentaro Muira’s Berserk is not an ordinary horror-action story that sets in a medieval fantasy. It has literary foundations to back up its professional maturity and makes men actually read books, especially books about Shakespearean tragedies, and existentialism (also cosmic horror novels).
Chairman Meow Guts actually gets his ass kicked time to time but gets up while Kenshiro (from what I’ve seen) only got his ass kicked once or twice but stays up.

City Hunter is one of my favorite anime/mangas of all time. I'm a huge fan of Miami Vice and City Hunter really reminded me of it with a tinge of the "Manime" flavors mentioned throughout the video. On another note, I do miss these kinds of Manga/Anime. Sure, you had guys like Bean Bandit aka Riding Bean in the 90's. But rarely do you see guys like Cobra the Space Pirate nowadays. P.S. I'm not saying I dislike shonen characters that meet the "Manime mold". I am quite fond of Dragon Ball (not Z), and Yuyu Hakusho. I'm also fond of shows that are more meant for girls like (the underrated martial arts manga/anime mentioned here) Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl.
You forgot one more very important reason why manga like Fist of the North Star were so popular: Rival magazines were pulling in big numbers because of various popular romance series (like Mitsuru Adachi's Touch and Urusei Yatsura.) The higher-ups at Jump were considering to go along with the trend but eventually decided against it, because it would go against their principles. As a counter to this popular trend they released manly manga like Hokuto No Ken and JoJo's. These types of manga were becoming popular because they were so different from the mold at the time.
I also find it interesting how big of an impact this period also had on the japanese gaming industry as well. With popular American action movies like "Escape From New York" inspiring Hideo Kojima to make the Metal Gear series, it paved the way for a lot of gaming industry standards as we know it today. It's hard to believe that something like those cheesy action flicks could inspire decades of immensely popular titles that came after it, but I wouldn't want it any other way.
My respects for mentioning Saint Seiya! Its not very well known on the US but here in Spain and in the rest of spanish speaking countries in america is considered a very respected classic between the likes of Dragon Ball and Superchampions.

Umm, not quite? Pretty much every TV show has been seasonal at one point or another, including all of the best TV anime ever, so to some people it might be worth keeping up so that they can catch the next big one... That said though, the real reason why anybody focuses primarily on seasonal anime is because of the community aspect, since most people only want to talk about whatever is new and hot, almost anything that's relatively older gets basically forgotten about until somebody notorious enough in the community digs it back up... Since I'm not at all a part of the anime community, but I still like to watch anime, I just watch whatever I feel like, regardless of when it was made...
Ginga Nagareboshi Gin defined my childhood. There was just something super cool about stories whose protagonists go on a quest to find allies to defeat the villain. It's a really good anime but prepare for dead doggies and a lot of animal abuse in case you're a dog lover.
a long time ago, a friend of mine linked me a blog that talks about weird comics that come out in finland, and there was a really bizarre amount of hyper violent sparkledog comics, it turns out the reason behind this is that ginga nagareboshi gin and ginga dentetsu weed were some of the first manga/anime to be translated into finnish, so everyone there tries to emulate it in much the same way DBZ is so popular in south america cus it was one of the first anime to be translated into spanish (apparently there's even a pretty popular DBZ themed taco restaurant in mexico where the waiters wear z-fighter gi uniforms)

The opening of the dog anime you showed was for Ginga Densetsu Weed, the sequel of Ginga Nagareboshi Gin. There was an anime adaptation of Gin in the 80’s I believe. I watched them both years ago, I remember they were posted here on UA-cam. I really liked them. The animation for Weed was a bit stiff at first but it got better as the series went along.
Thank you Wolf for being the first youtuber to talk about my favorite anime show! As an anime fan from Sweden I can say that Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, or Silver Fang, was our gateway anime. Sweden is one of the few places where it was officially licensed and in the "Swedish anime community" it's considered a cult classic. Especially the swedish dub wich was dubbed by like 5-8 people! Also that intro is for the follow up series Ginga Densetsu Weed wich is awful in comparison.
Great video. You should really take a close look at Kinnikuman when you get a chance. It probably did every bit as much to make the "power of friendship" a major plot device as Saint Seiya, and it's a real trip the whole way through. I think you'll find it has very little in common with FotNS style manga that were coming out, even while it was running contemporaneously with them. It's an interesting, somewhat anomalous series when you compare it with other series from around the time, and it mirrors some aspects of what was going on in the pro wrestling scene, which is a treat if you're a fan of 80's era wrestling. And thank you for mentioning the influence it has had on shonen manga. As a fan, it's always bothered me that it never seems to receive its due outside of, I dunno, its TVtropes page.
saint seiya was so amazing in mexico that its THE ANIME that made popular anime, it is also popular in europe an latin america, its so popular that its the only series that i know that has a premium (in a range of 60usd each) for almots every character in the series "The Myth cloth collection" really i dont know any other series that has a bigger rooster of figures, not even DB or Naruto (yes they have a lot of figures but normally only of the main chararters or villains) you can watch a random episode pause it, and then check that a figure of each character of the episode exist I have friends in the US that told me that the problem in the english speaking countries was with the censorship, because so much of the fights have been cut out, and chage the color of the blood from red to blue, it was canceled before the main saga of the series, i think it was the same problem with the original dragon ball series,

This provided a great insight into the reason behind why Kenshiro is Kenshiro that I was previously unaware of. I had actually heard about Ginga Nagareboshi before, but through it's translated anime title: Silverfang. One of the rare cases where anime found its way here during the 1980s. I never saw it myself though, I was watching Starzinger.

Kinda underplays some of the crazier aspects of FOTNS, like Kuroyasha the elderly black ninja dwarf, Xie the Crab Man with a verbal tic or Kaioh summoning his last bit of strength by asking his mother's grave to defeat Kenshiro and then a geyser of water shoots Kaioh up into the air so that he may deliver an aerial strike to Ken.
If I can't see the chest, I sometimes mistake Johnathan for Kenshiro.

I had the privileged of apprenticing under the creator of Fist of the North Star, Tetsuo Hara, from 2005-2007. I was an assistant illustrator on the FOTNS prequel, Fist of the Blue Sky. We actually shared a studio with City Hunter's creator, Hojo-sensei. It was amazing to be surrounded these Shonen manga legends... but the life style was completely insane.

In Ginga Nagareboshi Gin they just initially bark as humans are the main focus, but after like 5 episodes or so the emphasis changes to the dogs and they start talking. I mean, humans in the series don't understand them, but you know, 20 episodes of just barking wouldn't be that fun. In Ginga Densetsu Weed (shown in this video) they talk from the start but really, Ginga fans don't really like Weed as much as the original anime. But yeah, prepare for alot of dead dogs and blood.
The change in Jump is similar to Kung fu movies in a way. Kenshiro is like Bruce Lee, how he inspired heroes who are virtually invincible and made some knock offs. Then comes Dragon Ball. Goku being Jackie Chan in which you get a comedic hero who gets his ass kicked, but learns to become stronger in the end.

I'd like to point out that Saint Seiya's contributions to shonen didn't go unappreciated in the West. maybe in the US but in Latin America it is absolutely LOVED. And some countries in Europe too.
Saint Seiya's plot focuses on the corrupt degeneration of the pope, which is foreign to the predominantly Protestant United States. But it is popular in Latin America and Europe because they are mostly Catholic

This is probably my most re-watched video of Eyepatchwolf's, the history of this publication is fascinating. Loving insight on what exactly worked with these different series' and what the public demanded back in that era, I really hope he continues with these. I would love any sort of retrospective on Shonen Jump's competitors (Weekly Shonen Magazine and Shonen Sunday) cause I think its worth a video on them trying to keep up with Shonen Jump's towering rise in popularity.

This was really interesting! I also got some of those Jump reprints out of curiosity, and it's a fascinating read to see what kinds of series come into serialisation at what times. The idea of the softer, more shojo artstyle allowing a wider range of viewers was something that continued especially into the 1990's. I think I remember seeing that there was a rise of 'bishonen' characters around that time to tap into that market.
Demographics are fascinating.

@Shaman Xeed Actually the English release did separate the two parts into Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z in the first release of the manga. While you are correct in that there is only one manga series, it's entirely possible the version he read and is familiar with was split in to two.

The "edgy protagonist, not family friendly" trend started way back in the 60s mainly as a result of the student rebellions of the time. Osamu Tezuka talks about it in the beginning of Astro Boy volume 19. Series like Ashita no Joe & Devilman from the 70s featured characters that had both manly elements and soft elements, visually and in terms of personality.
Dead Stock Paradise And as always, you give out that bit of dosage of truth.
Tezuka has also been challenged by this at the moment, and the outside world has suspected that his style derived from Disney is outdated. The Black Jack who finally revived his momentum is also the style you call it: "edgy protagonist, not family friendly"

2 or so years ago when I went to a con in Tampere there was a section dedicated all for just this series.
So one of my friends told me about this time he found this dog anime by accident that involved a dog trying to fight a bear, only watched one episode, forgot the name, and never saw it again. My friend told me about this years ago, and now here I am, watching this, and thinking "holy fuck, that's the dog anime Patrick was talking about!"

In Sweden it was one of a couple of animes, like Genshi shonen Ryu and the Toei Animated version of Puss in Boots, who got a dubbed version and was released on VHS (this was back when videostores was all the rage, and seeing how animated movies (like Disney) was popular with kids, some companies bought and dubbed anime to cash in).
Although here it was known as Silver Fang.

@@leegunring We don't really have mountains here, but I think we just like dogs. :D Here in Finland it came popular for being one of the few animes that you could get from your local library in VHS. I'm from a small town and in our library there was Ginga, Candy Candy, Grand prix and Two Years' Vacation. And ofc Ginga was the most popular of them all. :)

i got so excited when you started talking about ginga! it was my entire childhood. it's a cult classic in finland and apparently other nordic countries as well. very overlooked series!
I don't mean to be rude but you have a lot of people watching you so I'm sure others will use your vid as a reference when it comes to certain perceptions of the 80s series you mentioned & I wish to clarify some misinformation. I'm assuming from the heavy usage of 1986 movie & the clip of Kenshiro vs thug fight, that you haven't seen/read the series in its entirety. While Kenshiro is an invincible manly symbol that's just the surface level of who he is. Ken did lose fights & failed to save lives. Much of the problems of the series was it's beginning as many foes weren't any match for Ken but even as early as chapter 10 it created a very tragic event for his character. He would later be joined with allies Mamiya, Rei, Shu, & others but many of Ken's friends & family would permanently die. With the appearance of villains like Raoh & Souther that's when the series takes a sadder tone even forcing Ken to learn a new move which determines the outcome of his final fight with Raoh. Admittedly, the series overstayed its welcome from Fist Of The North Star 2 & corresponding manga chapters, Kenshiro is more than just the tough guy beating up bandits, he's a very sad person who's often compared to Guts during his black swordsman days. Even when Ken finally wins he's left with no one at the end of his journey. He saved the world at the cost of his happiness.
Well said dude. My mind was blown when I watched the Fist of the North Star movie as a kid and it opened with Kenshiro being defeated and ended the same way with the Raoh fight. I had pre-conceived notions of Kenshiro being a cheesily overpowered Bruce Lee clone who had nothing more to him than just punching anything that moves to death.

A big problem with Eyepatch Wolf's fandom is the fact that because the presentation of his videos is consistently at such a high level, people automatically take everything he says as the truth even if what he says is factually incorrect. This has happened numerous times, most clearly in his video about what makes a hero feel real.

There are already dozens of comments with hundreds of likes in that video which go into detail, it's not hard to find them. So much so that Eyepatch Wolf even left his own comment admitting to his mistakes.
We can also see that popular modern manga, like say, My Hero Academia, sort of reflect that clash between young underpowered protagonists and the invincible heroes of yore, with for example Deku's relationship with Almight
or how american comics fused with japanese ones(and viceversa),the most obvious case being the change between Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball z and the million homages to super heroes the latter had
i think the reason stories like My Hero perform well in this generation is due to the target demographic being much more self-conscious and attaching more to a relatable struggle over a wild fantasy. its nice to see a character forced to grow by their own choices and not growing for the sake of power scaling.
of course, SAO is popular, so obviously wild escapism still has a market...sadly.

Uh, that's like a whole bunch of shonen, like A LOT. Like a lot of shonen characters want to grow stronger because it's required for their goal.

It definitely isn't a ground breaking series or anything but it is a lot of fun start to end.
An interesting fact about the weed manga and anime is that it was somehow very popular here in Finland, as it ran on finnish tv along other childrens programs. Everyone my age (20) is familiar with it here :p

The dog from the manga you mentioned Ging is in Saint Seiya and so is the bear antagonist! I wasn't expecting to have a revelation like this watching. It's in the Asgard arcs Fenrir fight, Fenrir was rasied by wolves and Ging saved him from that bear which also killed Fenrir's parents! Same name, same scar, same giant bear. If it's not a direct crossover its a perfect copy.

Ginga Nagareboshi Gin has a huge fandom in Finland, The cover of the manga volume you showed was actually the one published in Finland. But the opening you showed was Ginga Densetsu Weed, which is sequel series about Gin's son. Yeah the opening is good but the Gin's own anime and atory is much more brutal and epic, most of the English if not all rips are from Finnish origin and have some Finnish sectences on the subtitles here and there. But please make yourself a favor and go to see the original Ginga Nagareboshi Gin (Silver fang) opening and its soundtrack. ❤❤❤ The creator is also aware of his Finnish fanbase and has travelled here quite of a many times :'>

It is pretty sweet that every person you meet in the "swedish anime community" loves the show. Everyone has a connection to it somehow, cause it was THAT show that kinda started it all for us. And the people who hasn't seen it always has friends that pushes them to see it. The show is that much of a cult classic! Guessing it's the same over there?

Aaa yes the dub! The lovely dub that was done by like 6 guys and cut out all of the blood and most of the violence (and changing the ending in the process)! So we had a similar shit your pants experience on our end!
I mean seing what happened to Benizakura and watch the proper ending was kinda of a big deal for us!

Saint Seiya's contribution to shonen wasn't undervalued in the west, just in the English market. Latin America loves saint seiya to the level that the figures here are imported and pirated to death.

Ridiculously popular here in Italy too, partly due to the excellent dubbing team that made the characters even more memorable.
Saint Seiya's amazing or as it is know in the west as Knights of The Zodiac or in all of Latin America as "Caballeros del Zodiaco"
Heck, we even got the Lost Canvas Ovas dubber over here, and I think the US still have to dub it in english : /
I i'm not mistaken USA made an "adaptation" of Saint Seiya, censoring the blood and changing certain things of the plot, making it an awful show. what a shame.

Yup. It is actually unimaginably glorious to see that show. They censored crosses, turned blood into sweat, made Seiya into a jackass, Shiryu is perpetually blind from the start and Hyoga is a surfer poet dude who wants to rescue his mother from an evil spell that left her concience trapped in another dimension and Athena is a valley girl.
Please cover/review Silver Fang/Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, the series deserves more recognition. It's basically Fist of the North Star but with Dogs and it's got a pretty interesting story too.
Also, about Fist of the North Star, it's not exactly a power fantasy, since Kenshiro isn't 100% invincible, he lost a lot of fights throughout the series and had to learn to discipline himself as a result.

I think it's interesting how the rest of the world has never heard of Weed/Ginga and the other series by the same mangaka, since in Finland, where I happen to live, they belong to the classics that exposed many kids to anime for the first time. It even aired on TV dubbed which is something that doesn't even happen with the most popular series nowdays. And even back then even Sailor moon never got a tv run. I'm not sure why it was such a big thing here (and still is, to a level, since one the mangaka's series is still being published here).. but I'm glad it was and rest of the world has missed out on some great stuff.

One of the screenshots in this video, with the text "Hopeanuoli" is one of the manga volume's cover in Finland. It's truly a magnificent series, what deserves more love internationally, and it was quite a shock for me to hear ages ago that the series most of my friends irl grew up with, almost nobody would have heard it anywhere else._

I nearly cried when you mentioned Gin! My god does that series need so much more exposure! Personally for me the only shonen show in my opinion that sort of ripped that off is Makibao, another shonen manga about a tiny horse competing in horse races. No idea if it was in Shonen jump though, it is a great part of my childhood.

Anyway, this was a great video. Jump is a fascinating subject, so any new information is always welcome.
The intro you showed is actually from the sequel story about Gins' son Weed. The story of Gin was animated around 1986.
Saint Seiya still is the second most popular anime here in Brazil, after DBZ. Everyone around 20-30 years old knows it. Hell, even up to this day you can't go to a anime convention or something like that without seeing people dressed up in Saint Seiya costumes or singing it's theme song (being honest, it's Brazilian theme song it's simply amazing, if you understand Portuguese do check it out). Not all of the West doesn't appreciate it's influence, as here in Brazil it basically kick-started the anime fandom

If you take all Latin America into consideration Pokemon is less popular than both Saint Seiya and Naruto. And people who play the games not necesairly watch the Anime. Unlike most of other Anime related properties.
Great Video! Always love these more history oriented ones. One thing I find funny is that Saint Seya is as big, if not bigger, than Dragonball in Brazil. But as influential as it is, in most videos from other western countries it's rarely mentioned.

Seriously, Kentaro Muira’s Berserk is not an ordinary horror-action story that sets in a medieval fantasy. It has literary foundations to back up its professional maturity and makes men actually read books, especially books about Shakespearean tragedies, and existentialism (also cosmic horror novels).
Chairman Meow Guts actually gets his ass kicked time to time but gets up while Kenshiro (from what I’ve seen) only got his ass kicked once or twice but stays up.

City Hunter is one of my favorite anime/mangas of all time.
I'm a huge fan of Miami Vice and City Hunter really reminded me of it with a tinge of the "Manime" flavors mentioned throughout the video.
On another note, I do miss these kinds of Manga/Anime.
Sure, you had guys like Bean Bandit aka Riding Bean in the 90's. But rarely do you see guys like Cobra the Space Pirate nowadays.
P.S. I'm not saying I dislike shonen characters that meet the "Manime mold". I am quite fond of Dragon Ball (not Z), and Yuyu Hakusho.
I'm also fond of shows that are more meant for girls like (the underrated martial arts manga/anime mentioned here) Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl.
You forgot one more very important reason why manga like Fist of the North Star were so popular:
Rival magazines were pulling in big numbers because of various popular romance series (like Mitsuru Adachi's Touch and Urusei Yatsura.)
The higher-ups at Jump were considering to go along with the trend but eventually decided against it, because it would go against their principles. As a counter to this popular trend they released manly manga like Hokuto No Ken and JoJo's. These types of manga were becoming popular because they were so different from the mold at the time.
but like anything that goes against the mold and succeeds, it then becomes the mold.
Of course, but Jump also fell into the trend of romantic comedies such as Stop!! Hibari-kun and Kimagure Orange Road.
Saint seiya was really popular in South America, pretty much everyone here knows the opening in spanish.

I also find it interesting how big of an impact this period also had on the japanese gaming industry as well. With popular American action movies like "Escape From New York" inspiring Hideo Kojima to make the Metal Gear series, it paved the way for a lot of gaming industry standards as we know it today. It's hard to believe that something like those cheesy action flicks could inspire decades of immensely popular titles that came after it, but I wouldn't want it any other way.
My respects for mentioning Saint Seiya! Its not very well known on the US but here in Spain and in the rest of spanish speaking countries in america is considered a very respected classic between the likes of Dragon Ball and Superchampions.

Umm, not quite? Pretty much every TV show has been seasonal at one point or another, including all of the best TV anime ever, so to some people it might be worth keeping up so that they can catch the next big one...
That said though, the real reason why anybody focuses primarily on seasonal anime is because of the community aspect, since most people only want to talk about whatever is new and hot, almost anything that's relatively older gets basically forgotten about until somebody notorious enough in the community digs it back up...
Since I'm not at all a part of the anime community, but I still like to watch anime, I just watch whatever I feel like, regardless of when it was made...

Ginga Nagareboshi Gin defined my childhood. There was just something super cool about stories whose protagonists go on a quest to find allies to defeat the villain. It's a really good anime but prepare for dead doggies and a lot of animal abuse in case you're a dog lover.
The opening for the dog anime in the end is of Ginga Densetsu Weed, the sequel to Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, not Ginga Nagareboshi Gin itself.

a long time ago, a friend of mine linked me a blog that talks about weird comics that come out in finland, and there was a really bizarre amount of hyper violent sparkledog comics, it turns out the reason behind this is that ginga nagareboshi gin and ginga dentetsu weed were some of the first manga/anime to be translated into finnish, so everyone there tries to emulate it in much the same way DBZ is so popular in south america cus it was one of the first anime to be translated into spanish (apparently there's even a pretty popular DBZ themed taco restaurant in mexico where the waiters wear z-fighter gi uniforms)

The opening of the dog anime you showed was for Ginga Densetsu Weed, the sequel of Ginga Nagareboshi Gin. There was an anime adaptation of Gin in the 80’s I believe. I watched them both years ago, I remember they were posted here on UA-cam. I really liked them. The animation for Weed was a bit stiff at first but it got better as the series went along.

As an anime fan from Sweden I can say that Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, or Silver Fang, was our gateway anime. Sweden is one of the few places where it was officially licensed and in the "Swedish anime community" it's considered a cult classic. Especially the swedish dub wich was dubbed by like 5-8 people!
Also that intro is for the follow up series Ginga Densetsu Weed wich is awful in comparison.

Great video. You should really take a close look at Kinnikuman when you get a chance. It probably did every bit as much to make the "power of friendship" a major plot device as Saint Seiya, and it's a real trip the whole way through. I think you'll find it has very little in common with FotNS style manga that were coming out, even while it was running contemporaneously with them. It's an interesting, somewhat anomalous series when you compare it with other series from around the time, and it mirrors some aspects of what was going on in the pro wrestling scene, which is a treat if you're a fan of 80's era wrestling.
And thank you for mentioning the influence it has had on shonen manga. As a fan, it's always bothered me that it never seems to receive its due outside of, I dunno, its TVtropes page.
saint seiya was so amazing in mexico that its THE ANIME that made popular anime, it is also popular in europe an latin america, its so popular that its the only series that i know that has a premium (in a range of 60usd each) for almots every character in the series "The Myth cloth collection" really i dont know any other series that has a bigger rooster of figures, not even DB or Naruto (yes they have a lot of figures but normally only of the main chararters or villains) you can watch a random episode pause it, and then check that a figure of each character of the episode exist
I have friends in the US that told me that the problem in the english speaking countries was with the censorship, because so much of the fights have been cut out, and chage the color of the blood from red to blue, it was canceled before the main saga of the series, i think it was the same problem with the original dragon ball series,

This provided a great insight into the reason behind why Kenshiro is Kenshiro that I was previously unaware of.
I had actually heard about Ginga Nagareboshi before, but through it's translated anime title: Silverfang. One of the rare cases where anime found its way here during the 1980s. I never saw it myself though, I was watching Starzinger.
This was quite a fascinating topic and video, its interesting how much the genre can change in the same decade.
