I'm writing this before I watch the video:
It's odd, the thing that stayed with me about this anime wasn't the over the top fights or fantastical world, though I love all of that. It was the very beginning of the series.
A main character depicted as a nobody, an uncaring, self absorbed, angry delinquent who unfathomably sacrifices himself to save the life of a random child.
Then there's the funeral scene. Where Yusuke is positive no one will be there, that no one cares that he died. Then, all the people he's convinced hate him, that he thinks will be happy hes gone, they are all at his funeral, and they are all genuinely grieving over his death.
This is such a gut wrenching scene overall. But Kuwabara's reaction in particular (who until that point was depicted as an antagonistic bully), it is raw, and irrational. It's also one of the most emotionally honest reactions to death I've ever seen in an anime.
This told you from the very beginning this wasn't a typical super power super hero anime. It told you that characters may not be what they seem at first. That their is nuance and dimensions. That the good guys aren't entirely pure and just, and that the villains may have redeeming qualities or sound reasons for doing what they do.
That's togashi for you alright
And that is what makes it the best first episode in all time of anime.
@marcos valdez-cruz "its a cartoon"
When Manga and Anime are completely mainstream in Japan, it means their will be top tier story telling found within. Authors wanting to tell fantastical stories, impart knowledge of life and betterment, handling issues on wht ppl hav been through, etc.
What ur implying wuld also mean the same thing for tv shows, movies, books, music videos, etc.
Which implies tht u hav a very closed minded view of the world.
Everyone wants to impart their views and exp onto the world. No matter the medium it is portrayed on.
Hell most Western cartoons had good messages despite the silliness, b4 2010s. But its gotten more mind numbing lately for a quick buck, with only a few meaningful messages for kids.
I really agree, I remember at first putting a hold on this show back in 8th grade funny enough my basic mindset thought the show was superbly slow, but now a Sophomore in college done a bit of growing up decided to watch the show again and let me tell you... not only my 8th grade self was dead wrong but I was just so into the whole anime, the originality like you explained, its charm was not only the amazing plot and the most relatable likeable characters it was just so original by far making it a classic and surpass than any other mainstream anime I ever seen.
@marcos valdez-cruz It is a cartoon.
But ur implication on why u called it a "cartoon" meant u saw it as a near mindless entertainment medium to distract kids.
When its actually just as viable as film, books, short stories, gaming to convey thoughts, teachings and feelings like any other entertainment medium.
Maybe learn to read ur own posts, since u dont even know the meanings tht u use. LMAO
the drip is forever in this anime. one of my favorite things about it.

Yu Yu Hakusho has a special place in Brazilian hearts. Here in Brazil, this was one the first series that the voice actor were given more freedom to dub and improvise. Which resulted on a show full of Brazilian slang words and sayings that made watching this series all the more special for the people around here.
interesting!
I'm so happy to see your comment here! I was about to say the same thing! I never watched the japanese version because...well I don't know, there is always something pushing me back to the brazilian dub, it make the characters so funny and yet with an amazing quality.

@@georgekatkus5162 fucking Chris Sabat's performance at the wake. Grieving and fuming. This is wrong. This isn't fair. You're supposed to be here.
i didn't cry, per say, but one night reading the manga chapter it hit hard. I had recently experienced existential thoughts, and the sudden realization that my Grandpa wasn't going to live past this year. I bauled my ass off to Yusuke's wake.
The ending of Yu Yu Hakusho is why I won't complain about Hunter X Hunter delays. I would rather the mangaka take his time getting to the ending he wants rather than rushing to an unsatisfying ending.
The main reason Togashi ended Yu Yu Hakusho so abruptly was out of spite for his editors.
Agreed, the spite was why it was abrupt. But the delays in HXH speaks to a better relationship with his editors now unless I'm just mistaken. I just view HXH delays as being for his health and general life balance. Maybe I'm being naive, I just don't ever expect a new chapter for that or Berserk and so when one comes out every year or so it's a wonderful treat lol.
The reason for this is because his editors know that they need him more than the contrary. But like you said, it's water under the bridge, and Togashi now has a permanent slot in Shounen jump in spite of his hiatus tangents. Berserk returned last mouth, so everything should be fine within that regard, unless Miura decides to work on something else...again.
Exactly why I'm harsher on Miura, I get that he's been working on the same title for what is it now? 30+ years? But the art and story are so detailed and beautifully layered I'll take what I can get too. I actually haven't minded the last couple of delays given where the story is I'm super excited to see what comes next month, I really enjoyed these last few chapters.
The manga's ending wasn't very good. But the anime's ending; puts a smile on my face. Really, Yu-Yu Hakusho to me is like an aged-vine. It has the intrinsic trappings of a Shonen battle series, but offers enough flavors and character that make it stand out.
It showcases Togashi's gift for writing characters and making them fleshed out and believable. And clearly, Togashi never fought this with Hunter X Hunter. Heck, he went the opposite direction and made it an adventure series and only recently became more battle-oriented. And that is so nice, to see a mangaka use his strengths in crafting an original series that isn't trying to shove down the same formula down our throats(cough, FT. cough, Rave Master. I love RM by the way).
I actually LIKED how anticlimactic the ending of the last arc was. The main characters get their asses kicked and go down just like so many minor characters before them. It was a great way to show how the heroes aren't the center of the universe and hammered home the themes of humility and maturity.
THANK YOU. I completely agree. It's sobering, stops you from going into the clouds, so to speak.
yeah they affected the demon trio by being themselves aka getting along not winning which is why the 3 went to demon world in the first place @@ruceblee969
Exactly and it's also one of the main things that is touched on in Hunter X Hunter as well
It's anticlimactic because despite losing in the tournament, we never get to know the new demons. We see that they are honorable, unlike the lower class demons, but we don't really see why. We needed more time with them.
thanks for spoilering the show for me
The strength of YuYu Hakusho was really in it's characters more than anything else. Thanks for making this video.

This is about to be a very personal comment and I’ve had too much alcohol but fuck it. I grew up with Yusuke at a time when I was living in a similar situation. I got to school and no one wants me there. I go home and no one wants me there. So I really relate to him and the way his irony and use of quips/humor are his main coping mechanisms, but then as he grows those very same things that saved him at the time are holding him back. His detachment saved him, but only for so long. How incredible for a shonen anime to understand that level of nuance in the mind of a teenager who grew up in such a bad situation. I love the way yusuke eschews apathy and recognizes his personal power and responsibility. It’s a dream for those of us who grew up in abuse and were mired in hopelessness, to find family, recognition and appreciation for the traits derided all of our lives. I’ll stand by this series my entire life and it really was lightning in a bottle. I appreciate that you recognize the power in yusuke and other characters actually sitting in their emotions, because that is an uncomfortable thing and television series are often afraid to let the audience breathe with the characters. Especially in such a male dominated genre. Kudos for acknowledging the power in allowing male characters to feel things.
Couldn't agree more. The series is very close to home for me. Living wise and how i was brought up to kind of figure out my own path; trials and tribulations. But like Yusuke he opens himself up to others, friends and loved ones. He grows and really understands what he believes he feels is the best way to continue moving forward. The show is really something unique in that aspect of relation. How you mentioned its reslly incredible for Shonen to really recognize and not downplay that kind of mindset Yusuke begins and ends with.
don't have anything to add but i wanted to say this really resonated with me
Not a bad comment for being drunk.

I had watched the first 40 or so episodes of Yu Yu Hakusho before I wasn't able to finish it for another 18 years of my life...... The show is considered a popular classic in Japan to the point that they still release new yyh merchandise years after the anime and manga ended. In fact there's an anniversary event that's happening in Japan in 2017 that also includes a yyh cafe themed that will serve food inspired by the show. It surprises me that a show that ended in the 90s still has large events and merchandised released after over a decade it ended and is still popular enough to have events like this.
I was surprised as well, but then again, I didn't know what the Japanese opinions of the series. It may not be as popular as Naruto or One Piece, but it makes me happy to know that the series is still loved this much. :)

I thought I was crazy urameshi but you take the prize the hell was that you don't make bombs go boom in your face
misafan4u I feel like his Irish accent was exaggerated and cartoonish by design, as the aesthetic features of every other character are. The 14yo teenager angry and full of angst who can somehow beat up full grown adults before receiving powers (fulfilling a rebellious power fantasy in the anime’s demographic) is our main protagonist. The best friend who’s also tough (Kuwabara), leading to friendly competition, so long as our hero always wins in the end, though they gain mutual respect in the end. The authoritative figure that is Koenma being an immature child who’s openly afraid of interacting in the dangerous missions our heroes approach fearlessly. Every adversary who is immoral/“evil” dies in the end while adversaries who show mutual respect with our heroes live on and even return in demon world. It’s a romanticized version of the “hero vs villain” fight, but that allows it to reach the maximum level of cheese it requires to be so iconic. Nothing in this anime isn’t exaggerated, but it wouldn’t be the same any other way
HAHAH i loved the personality behind it but i couldn't understand a SINGLE word he said so...mixed feelings ig?
Whatever it is, go with it, YOU GOT THIS BIGGIE NOW!
Sasuke is definitely inspired by Hiei
I always thought Kuruma = Kurapika
MrGladBEASTftw Yeah I'm pretty sure Kishimoto has directly admitted that his inspiration for Sasuke was Kurapika. Just like JJBA was Togashi's inspiration for the concept of territories in YYH
Hiei was the inspiration for the Sharingan but that was almost certainly created for Kakashi (and Obito) rather than for Sasuke. Kishimoto only added the element of a rival to Naruto on the insistence of his editor.
Sasuke is actually based on Sasuke Sarutobi from the manga Sasuke by legendary mangaka Sanpei Shirato. In that manga he fights against the people who wiped out his clan and slew his mother. The character of Sasuke Sarutobi is popular in Japanese folklore and in another version, the anime called Manga Sasuke Sarutobi that ran when Kishimoto was a child, he has a girl companion with a big crush on him called Sakura...
Here's some pictures of Sasuke from the Sanpei Shirato manga:
www.ilbazardimari.net/wp-content/uploads/sasuke-piccolo-ninja-2.jpg
www.oddmag.it/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/sasukewall1-.jpg
The idea that Kurapika is the basis for Sasuke in Naruto is just an assumption based on the murder of his clan and his motivation of revenge. However, these are stock manga backgrounds and others with exactly the same motivation include Sasuke Sarutobi, Ogami Itto, Yuki from Lady Snowblood, Rin Asano from Blade of the Immortal. Numerous other revengers include Enishi, Aoshi, Sanosuke all from Rurouni Kenshin, Gatsu in Beserk, Utsuse in Kamui, and no doubt many more.
Kishimoto has mentioned Hiei in connection with Sasuke Uchiha and he is probably one of the kinds of 'cool customer' types that he had in mind. He has also mentioned Sasuke Sarutobi as a source for Sasuke Uchiha and everything points to him being the primary inspiration. I don't believe he has ever mentioned Kurapika. In fact there is no need for him as everything that might be attributed to Kurapika, and more, can be found in Sasuke Sarutobi and Hiei.
That little shit can not be compared to Hiei. He cared for nothing, no one, and betrayed everything and everyone that tried to help him. Unlike Hiei, he has no code whatsoever.
Bran Phillips you clearly don’t understand sasuke
When Hiei fought Yusuke to help him out emotionally I thought that was brilliant!
They both talk with their action rather than talk no jutsu
That's one of my favorite Parts in the whole entire show..... compared to the manga they went hard on that fight in the anime

Just finished Yu yu Hakusho! Thanks! This show had the best fights, emotional moments and the best cast of heroes rivaling the Z fighters.
To be fair, the Z fighters didn't really have many scenes together, they all kinda did their own thing ESPECIALLY GOKU. Yu Yu is one of those special series where, despite being a primarily male-centered battle anime with only 2 female fighters of note, pretty much every female character is well written and likable, whether it's Boton's playful confidence, Keiko and the way she manages to hold her ground in a relationship with someone like Yusuke, or Genkai being a curmudgeonly old hag who'll dunk on Yusuke in virtual fighter and be the best parental figure a punk like him could ever have
Well written? No. Neither Botan or Keiko are well written, but they are very fun to have on screen. However, Genkai is legitmately well written with a great backstory and serves as an amazing teacher someone like Yuskue.

This anime is my favorite and really is amazing but one thing I think that gets overlooked is how good the music is. It’s so good at complementing the mood of the anime
Agreed! I rarely see people talk about the background music, which was always phenomenal imo
I fell in love with Yu Yu Hakusho because the characters are so real, honestly. He spent so much time giving all the characters solid background stories, solid personalities, there's so much depth to them. YYH is never shallow. Everytime a character does something, you know the motive behind it. And it either breaks your heart or fills you up with joy for them. When they're down and hurt you almost want to hug them. Or maybe that's just me lol. And as you said, even the smaller characters get their moments to shine. The bad guys like Toguro or Sensui have their stories and their motives too, they're not just "pure evil", the bad guys because we need bad guys in an anime. I always loved this in Togashi's works. No character is just good or just bad, just like a real human. This series haunted my mind for so long, and it still does 15 years later. All the girls back then wanted a boyfriend like Hiei or Kurama, and they're not even THE main character. You'd think a shounen is just about the epic fights and I avoided watching it for so long as a kid, but when I finally watched it, it became my favorite anime of all time. I hope kids these days will give it a chance because it's really a gem.
literally, this is one of my favorite animes of all time i can never go a day without listening to the ost or watching a full episode randomly 😂
Dude, I'm brazilian and I cannot watch Yu Yu Hakusho without being dubbed, the dubbed version here is amazing as well.
same with me but with Hungarian dub
It's best actualy.

i feel like there arent very many male friendship anime out there, or even just really male friendship stories in general. some shows or movies seem to masquerade as such but the friendships just a premise and the bonds are never really explored in a meaningful way, instead being over shadowed by romance. yu yu hakusho never did that, and much of the development was just around how these men interacted and grew together and bonded. I wish there was more of that.
In america its popular to start with that kind of idea but have it end with the characters parting ways because they get women.
I can think of some anime that fit that idea, although I wouldn’t always describe the friendships as healthy or quality like they are in Yu Yu Hakusho.
Great comment. And having close bonds with other men is crucial for our health and development as people just as family and a romantic partner is important. To see those ideals in an anime just adds to its legacy, greatness, and originality.
Delinquent manga have plenty of male bonding. Sadly hardly any gets animated.
What I do really think is that there aren't many stories about friendship between men and women, without romance
SolarSailors The golden age arc of Berserk has a great male friendship, that is until it’s ruined in the end (to clarify, Berserk doesn’t get ruined, the friendship does). But yeah, I agree, we need more variety in our fictional relationships. I haven’t seen/read Yu Yu Hakusho yet, but I really want to
"A mulberry is a tree - Kuwabara is a man." - Kazuma Kuwabara
God I will always love and cherish this anime. I feel like it could totally come back as a sequel series in an almost JoJo-esque style where we get to follow the gang as they explore Demon/Spirit/Human world more across randomized Spirit Detective missions. It would be a hit...One can dream I suppose lol
Chapter Black arc is my favorite not just in anime but of any show ever
I'm jealous of anyone watching this show for the first time, It's just too good. My biggest gripe with the story is that the end felt forced. That being said It was still beautifully done.
there nothing like watching yyh naruto dragonball and one piece for the first time ..these shows are magical...
Joel Ambrose I’m around 20 episodes in and I’m bored out of my mind. When does it start getting good? It’s so old and cheesy, I can’t.
@@shinygrasspokemontrainer1980 Then probably the show is not for you. Drop it.
If old is a deal breaker for you, please don't watch anime. Some of the best anime are old and you are just too close-minded.
Lockfreak123 Lol no newer stuff is better.
Wasn't it said that Togashi was already having a hard time with Yu Yu Hakusho (health problems) which is also why he was super relieved when he ended it, though left us hanging and with a rushed ending? Which also explains the same for Hunter X Hunter.
Also, I'm going to point this out. The whole point of Yu Yu Hakusho was BASICALLY about a detective kid. Amazingly, it became popular during tournament arcs, which were supposedly just barriers to Yusuke's main purpose of being a detective.
_(whisper)_ _but that was the best thing about the anime. love it to the bone._
Yeah, his health issues started around the fight with first round of the dark tournament.
aninme doesnt cause health problems..
extreme hard work and lack of sleep do
i love that idea of a normal delinquent kid being a detective and having an actual purpose in death that he lacked in life...
Yeah, Dark Tournament Arc was far and away factually the best overall Arc of the series, no debate to be had about it.
dude, those animators back then were not messing around
Now, I understand why I always got emotional whenever I looked at photos of Yu Yu Hakusho as a kid. Especially the ones with Kurama and Hiei. It was the author's/artist's focus.
Currently watching chapter 66.
[Spoiler ahead]
That f*cking guy, Toguro, accepting he is beyond redemption and voluntarily going to hell... No words.
toguro wants to be tortured..he likes suffering for his actions..he knew he chose wrong out of guilt and fear but he doesn't care how that affected people around him..he can't admit he wasn't in control of his actions cause it means being humanized again just like when his dojo students died..he doesn't want to feel that pain again or admit fear...which is why he kills genkai mercilessly..he threw away his olf self..he never wants to bring that back..his final speech to genkai proves he knew he was wrong he felt bad but he also continued doing it as punishment and wanted to lose to suffer for his path...he embodies togashi himself i think..he just accepts his pain..he admits his actions were wrong and he deserves pain that he caused others...no evil no fear..just acceptance
Didn't he choose limbo?
Im currently watching episode 66 a year later. no b.s

How to do an anime tournament right? Look no further than the Dark Tournament. How to do it wrong? Grand Magic Games
Polo Hat Luffy true true. This classic can't be associated with trash
Radical Ein Dressrosa as well. That was just dreadful.
Eh, I liked Dressrosa. It's no where near as delightful as the Dark Tournament arc, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hyped every week to see what Luffy was going to do in the arena. I think a lot of the stuff surrounding the coliseum battles is what really brought DressRosa down. There's so much excess story and plot that it's a little jumbled, and the countless fights with all the Doflamingo family members was tedious, with the only real memorbale parts being Luffy's fights in the Coliseum, his fight with Doflamingo, and Law's backstory. I don't think Dressrosa is a bad example of a tournament arc, but I do think it's a jumbled arc as a whole.
Which points did the GMGs got wrong?

Angelo Barahona Dark Tournament Arc is factually superior and the best Arc of the series overall, but yes, the Chapter Black Arc is amazing as well, and definitely the second best Arc of the series...Three Kings Arc was a rushed, horrid mess of an Arc though, a factually, utter shite, mess of a manga/anime Arc.

@Spurs폴 The local dubs are one of the main reasons why I HATE dubbing. They were so horrible that they caused vomit-inducing headache in me. Every dub since then produces the same effect in me now, even if it's "adequate".
The sub is soooo much better, kuwabaras voice suits him so much better

"Yu Yu Hakusho" (or mostly known as "Ghost Fighter" here in the Philippines) was the most successful animé series here in our country during the 90's based on TV ratings. It was more successful than DBZ and other popular animés back then, it was one of my favorite shows and a part of my childhood too. This video gives me a lot of nostalgia about this show and my younger days :)
Hats off to tagashi this was a much see when I was a kid. Stayed up late for yu yu hakushu

The ridiculous thing is that this is also my favourite anime AND I also found out about it via one of its games; Tournament Tactics. Literally saw it in a game shop one day, thought it looked cool, played it, and then went looking for a TV show.
I had watched it so many times during my teenage years that you could give me a number between 1 and 112 and I could tell you what episode it was.
I will never forget this anime.
Jin's voice acting was so bad it wrapped back around and became good again.
Warchief Lok I loved his voice so much
I like to imagine Yusuke never actually understands a thing Jin's saying, just fakes it and nods along 'cause hey, Jin smiles a lot and likes to fight and Yusuke can roll with that.
He's also principal nezu in my hero academia lol
he actually literally does that at least once

Great video. Yu Yu Hakusho is easily one of my favorite anime of all time. You should definitely do a Why You Should Watch Rurouni Kenshin.
Rurouni Kenshin is a bunch of flashbacks & talking
unclesam530 Not really. Have you seentl the show. You would understand why it's a must watch. The entire idea and story of the show is much bigger than the show itself. Shishio idea behind what he was doing wasn't as bad as most people really thought.

You know what? Watching this video made me want to rewatch the anime again. Throughout my years of being a kid and growing up with my three best friends, they all had absolutely adored Yu Yu Hakusho while I had never watched even one episode. They knew almost every lyric to Smile Bomb, and each person resonated with a character from the main 4 characters. I always hated how they associated me with Kuwabara, since I just thought of him as a dumb idiot. I watched it back in 2020 as a 15 year old and to this day, being 17 years old and having watched plenty of other animes, none of them will ever compare to the sheer love I feel for the entire cast of the show. I'm going to sit myself down with a cup of hot cocoa and watch again. (and now, kuwabara is my favorite character from the show)
Just started the show with my wife. She never saw an anime before in her life. She is OBSESSED. The amount of times she gets jacked up when Kuwabara overcomes something is amazing! It’s such a great show!
Yu Yu Haskusho is what I thought Dragon Ball could've been but sadly never was.
Dragon Ball is what Yu Yu Hakusho could've been but thankfully never was.
So after watching YYH all I can say is *_thank you for waking me up_* .
Finally! Someone who thinks that YYH is better than DBZ in every way.
I just started on this show and as much as I love DBZ (DBZ was my very first anime), YYH is wayy better, story wise, characters, worldbuilding.
Edit: No wonder its so amazing. Its made by the same creator as Hunter X Hunter.
Toriyama was basically forced to keep writing and changing his manga because of his editors. Sometimes this worked out rather well, Cell saga, and other times not so much, Buu saga.
Actually by the time, Buu Saga rolled in. Toriyama took back control of creative liberties and ventured the series back into the mystical roots. His editor Fuyutoi Takeda was extremely lenient, resulting in one of the most mediocre sagas of Dragon Ball continuity.
I liked the Buu saga, y'all can shove it.
"A show thats incredibly fun and increasingly nihilistic"
Oh shiiit! Just like HxH!

Love Yu Yu Hakasho. Rurouni Kenshin and Yu Yu Hakasho were my 2 favorite anime when i was a kid
Man this anime evokes memories of my childhood in the 90's. This anime was on primetime back then in phils and had a higher viewership compared to other channels that shows telenovelas. It was so popular than even adults during that time watched it together with their kids.
Kuwabara is in high school?! He looks like he's been held back since American military occupation!
Well he feels like a lazy character to me
In the beginning I think he's in his last year of middle school.
Just Some Guy with a Mustache yusuke and kuwabara are in 8th grade in the beginning (14 years old) and 18 at the end
That makes it even more unbelievable.
they are all fucking lazy bastards more interested in fighting than studying, probably failed a few years in school...(that is until that episode in which Kuwabara has to study)
Just started binge-watching your videos, first time commenting. Here's my YYH story- from a middle school kid in the states to someone who lives and works in Japan, and how my family actually maybe single-handedly got YYH taken from a once a week 5 AM timeslot to weekday television.
YYH was my introduction to anime as a kid- I had of course watched other shows, namely DBZ and Sailor Moon, but YYH was what put Japan on the map for me as a young kid growing up in the US. It was the first show I'd seen where characters had Japanese names, which sounds like such a weird minor thing but as a dumb elementary school kid, it didn't occur to me that the shows I loved had a foundation outside of the US. The YYH dub didn't scrub away references to Japan the way other dubs did, and it made me curious.
For personal reasons, during the transition from elementary school to middle school I also turned from being devoutly Catholic (my first dream job was to be a nun) to being...anything but that. The study of demons and demonology fascinated me, and that this show openly had demons and spirits but no angels or references to God or Jesus was strangely empowering and liberating- I was breaking out of my old world view, and I thought it was so cool and rebellious to sympathize with and fangirl over these characters.
The name "Kurama" still sends shivers down my mom's spine. Not because she's especially religious or has a problem with that, but because for three YEARS she had to listen to me talking about, crying over, writing about, and professing my love for Kurama. My first fanfiction, my first emergence into fan communities... and my first internalized homophobia, actually. I went from thinking that Kurama was a woman to deciding that he was my One True Love and that he COULDN'Tbe gay (whatever THAT was) because it meant he wouldn't be with ~me~. I used to stay up for *hours* every night with my friend creating long verbal fanfiction (this was before instant messengers, kids, it was a strange time) on the house phone where we would insert ourselves into the various stories and wind up with our True Loves (Kurama and Hiei, respectively). It was freeing-there was no audience but ourselves and we came up with our own private memes, shorthand, and stock characters.
Okay I promised to talk about how my family kind of... saved??? The show???? At least for people in my neck of the woods. For a stretch of time, YYH was on cartoon network. In a move that *devastated* me, it went from a late but still reasonable time to being once a week on Saturday mornings 5 AM EST. What happened next is the gospel truth. Whether by sheer coincidence or some kind of BALLER move that I don't know how my parents pulled off...we became a Nielsen family. So for weeks, I set my alarm clock, woke my younger brother up, and together we'd watch the finals of the Dark Tournament, then record it on the time sheet and go back to bed. After a few months, YYH was an after-school program, five days a week.
Part of me looks back on it all with a bit of cringe. But it was also the catalyst for so much good in my life- not only in opening the door to other anime but in researching actual Japanese lore and history, becoming interested in the culture and the land outside of just the beautiful bishounen. I did a lot of shitty writing, which became foundation for less shitty writing later. And, most importantly, it put Japan on the map for me. It sparked my interest in the country that is now my home.
Watching this video I'm in tears because I remember how much everything *felt* to me back then. I was afraid to watch this video because even though I have some YYH posters in my apartment, visited a YYH cafe in Akihabara and even bought a Japansese-language Shounen Jump anniversary collection of some of the most popular stories in Japanese...I haven't really allowed myself to go back. And for the first time in maybe 15 years...I think I'm ready to revisit my first love. Not Kurama, per say, but the show itself- the world I got so heavily invested in, the storyline and characters I adored.
First, though, I will sleep. It's 1:41 right now in Japan and I have class to teach in the morning. Can someone please tell the child I used to be that one day she'll be saying that? I feel like that will help her through a lot. おやすみなさい、皆さん。

Lua Guerreiro this is very very good you should watch it
Make sure to jump to the manga around episode 520 of One Piece.
I really liked the animation style throughout the series. The less energetic art in the beginning felt nostalgic of a simpler time. The world was more black and white with conflicting colors and shapes, humans and demons; good and evil; and as Yusuke continues his journey his adversities continue adding depth to his character.
I kinda liked the ending of anime lol I'd already watched a lot of battle based animes, and the hero not only losing, but losing not even in the final fight was a breath of fresh air. Not seeing the final fights was a bit of a bummer though.
I literally watched this 7 times about to make it my 8th
Wow nice job I’m about to make it my 9th you peasant
Tobi Falola 😂😂😂😂
how? i always struggle rewatching shows since i already know whats about to happen
This is weird to say but Yu Yu Hakusho helped me go through a breakup haha. I used to watch this show as a kid and in my opinion its one of the best (and most underated) animes of all time. I dated this guy who was super problematic but didn't really do anything about his problems, he reminded me of pre-spirit detective Yusuke lol, and I was Keiko because I was that girl who would try to be super positive and supportive to a considerably rebellious guy, But the only difference is that Yusuke actually was willing to grow and develop as a person and my ex wasnt. My ex ended up cheating on me not too long ago and that was honestly extremely heartbreaking, I ended up re-watching YYH after that and the messages within the anime really did help me realize a few things about myself and the world and it made me feel a lot better in general.
For example, the chapter black arc reminded me that sometimes humans aint shit and some arent worth your time and energy. Although you probably wont catch me trying to cut an opening between Hell and the human world to punish humankind, it's a pretty true idea. There really are human atrocities happening as we speak that we dont know about :( human nature at times could be pretty evil. Also at some point Genkai said that your choices effect everybody who cares about you and I didnt even realize that until she said it. Have you noticed that a lot of Yusuke's decisions really effected those who loved and cared about him? My ex was all over the place and his decisions (at the time I loved him blindingly) really effected me and his family yet he completely disregarded all of that. Thats another difference between my ex and Yusuke, Yusuke actually had people in mind. Maybe I'm just stupid trying to find every little connection between YYH and my life lol I also have a fat anime crush on Kurama like holy shit if I had a genie in a bottle and the genie asked me what my 3 wishes were one of them would be to make Kurama into a real person and have him date me. Hahaha I needa find me a guy like him for real.
I'm not sober typing this up so sorry if my ideas are all over the place. And i watched most of the series high as shit and 10/10 I would recommend that because the humor is a lot more hilarious and the animation is super intricate and interesting to look at. This show really gets you thinking !!
This is honestly the most stupid youtube comment I've ever written I'm sorry to yall who have read this. None of you guys care about this
...I've read it though. :( It's okay to jot all of your thoughts down. But I am glad that the show helped you in any way.^^

Ive agure. Ive probly seen the entirty of the show like 30+ times
Anime just isn't animated like this anymore. I miss it.
This anime needs no reworks. Its animation is perfectly beautiful as is---giving us those classic and nostalgic 90's vibes.
Accept it bloosers, some things are better off untouched.
Kennj Lagamia Yep
Exactly man. I disagree with those who want a remake.
Kennj Lagamia It doesn't need to be remade, it needs to be finished.
this anime need a proper finish, the last tournament was really rushed.
Kennj Lagamia ehhhh I beg to differ. Hunter x Hunter was relieved the remake treatment and now look. Its one of the most popular animes out there. Yu Yu Hakusho is somewhat of a hidden gem. The King of Underground. If it got reanimated, I guarantee you, it will be extremely popular. Just look at Berserk.
I watched YuYu Hakusho in 2012, when I bought my Blu rays.
I now have a yearly ritual to watch either the dark tournament or chapter black arc in its entirety.
Idk why but this show speaks to me. Its something that makes me wanna go back to the early 90s or late 80s and live in Tokyo.
I know, I'm makin no sense.
I was buying YYH VHS tapes in like 2004. I've seen the series so many times since then I can't even enjoy it anymore. I probably watched some episodes 10-15 times each. I sometimes wish I could erase my memory and relive it all. I've seen a lot of anime but YYH had the biggest impact on me of all.
Animepro100 no u make since, this show a d neon evangelion actually made me relate to the characters and miss them when the show ended
No you're not making any sense, becase apparently for many people, YYH can only be great for those w/ nostalgia goggles on. Hah.
I haven't watched it (though I am going to now) but I remember reading chunks of the tournament arc in Shounen Jump as a kid and that alone has made me adore Yu Yu Hakusho fondly. It's about time I give the series and proper read/watch.
Just binged watched it and i'm at the final episode. it's a fantastic anime. i love it and enjoy it.
Jin is great in the dub; I'll fight eyepatch wolf on that.
Yes, Jin, Chu, all the accent characters added color and variety. The dub made just about every dark tournament character memorable.
The Gaming Noobs I agree. The accents just make the anime more alive and bigger IMO.
Yeah, they were painfully bad accents, but it seemed to be a "we don't have anyone who can do a good accent so let's do bad ones and make it a joke" that paid off in spades. They were enjoyable when fighting Yuske's team, as their bad accents would give way to menace, and affable enough that their eventual backing of Yuske's team felt warm and amiable.
Wait... the manga is 19 volumes long... but the anime is 112 episodes!?
The Dark Tournament Arc lasted forever in the Anime.
...so, which one of them is better?
The Anime, if you can get it. It feels a lot more alive even though it seems longer than the manga.
Kyononnon 'why did Gmail screw me over?' The anime has an excellent main cast dub. a few characters can be hit and miss, but damn if it's one thing this show gets right, it's screams of pain. Give the anime a shot.
and surprisingly the manga STILL has more content then the anime
I just started watching this show, its fricking great!
Great video man! YYH is prob my 2nd fav anime EVER only behind DBZ but honestly it might even be tied. It's so nostalgic to my pre-teen years and the story and art really got me and had me emotional. I recently re-watched it and picked up on themes and details that I missed back in it's run on Toonami. Great work! keep it up.
