Influencer question - how do you pay your staff? Hourly? Monthy? Per content creation/post? And how far out is their employment contracted with you if at all?

When I first started dating my boyfriend-now-husband in university, one of his girl-friends took me out for coffee & she asked me how I felt about her working with him, because they were good friends & did well working together in school projects (they majored in business so they did a lot of group/partner work). I REALLY appreciated that conversation, and she always made sure I was invited to get-togethers and I wasn't just a "tag-along." Highly recommend having this conversation & including your guy-friends' girlfriends in things!

Can we also talk about guys being really defensive about being “friend zoned.” I’m really curious about this and also in general why they get defensive at rejection, even if the other person tries to communicate it nicely

    • @alisalaska1786

Exactly. Girls get friend zoned just as frequently but you don’t see them getting mad and entitled about it.

Defensive about reject is possibly an ego thing but I can accept and handle rejection from them, it's not nice but it's life so I find it so frustrating when they get mean about it or take it really badly! Is it a patriarchal thing? They've never been told not before? I don't know

    • @jonathanmoss4064

They get defensive because it's telling them there not good enough for you. And they don't understand why? You're single they're single, you reject them even when it's nice. Well, why am I not good enough to date you. I thought you liked me, but just enough to be friends. They also get defensive because it's not what they want. Which is fair because them telling you what they want, and you denying their offer and feelings make them want to deny your friendship offer.

I despise the mentality that if a boy is mean, that means he likes you. It sends such a wrong message and sets up such a toxic mentality for both genders. I will do my best to teach my son to be better, but as he's six months old, I got some time LOL

My best friend is a guy and we've been friends since 2004 so I obviously think we can. I've been with my boyfriend since 2010 and I have to be honest it was odd for him for about 6 months to accept that I've had this 6 year long friendship with a guy as he thought it was strange, it took a while but they are a right double act now, I swear he sees him more than I do anymore.

It's interesting to see this friend dynamic with hetero couples vs. queer couples. It doesn't matter whatsoever to me or my finace (we're both queer women) that all of our friends are other queer women/non-binary folks. I've also had friendships with guys and have had zero issues with boundaries - potentially because they were immediate'y "friend-zoned" because I'm queer lol

Interesting way to think of this! I personally have quite a few friendships with guys and we all have those deep conversations and there is a platonic boundary that we are all friends. I think it depends on the people individually. I’ve always treated others with kindness and I’ve always been that go to person who people go to for advise and hugs, and I’m a huge advocate for people being their authentic selves. All I want is for others to be happy; and I have no judgements. So I’m not sure if that’s why I can platonically have guy friends easier or not. I’m sorry if I’m not wording this right lol. But I hope all of you beautiful souls are well! Thank you for the brilliant podcast episode as always! ❤️✨

When I was about 8, my two best friends were boys, they were so much more straightforward than girls, as I knew exactly which ones liked me and which didn’t. I was the only girl invited to their birthday parties. At uni, I considered most of the guys I knew as brothers. I had a crush on a guy on my course who was gay, but once I found that out, he eventually became a really good friend ( we were in the same town for part of our third year language placement). A lot of them I knew through the Christian Union, and some of the guys there were really off with me as I am quite tactile, I would dress up for church/student faith events and love doing my hair and makeup. I hate the girlfriend/boyfriend comments when two babies/toddlers are playing together, and all the clothes about being daddy’s little princess/a future heart-breaker or mummy’s little man. Blech!

edit: i'm a little further into the episode now! this conversation means so much to me. I'm an enby lesbian who had literally zero queer representation growing up. Like y'all said, I constantly heard the narrative that I *must* have crushes on my boy friends. It was so confusing and I get sad when I think about how much time it has taken me to unlearn those harmful words. Thanks for talking about this, especially from a parental point of view!

@@mybigyearthey're nonbinary. Enbie is sort of a spelling out of the letter NB which stands for Nonbinary. Nonbinary people are people who are outside of the gender binary ( male and female). (The word lesbian Incase u r wondering how someone can be a Nonbinary lesbian can apply to any nonman with attraction to nonmen and it's up to Nonbinary people how they want to classify they're sexuality since they fall outside of the gender binary.)

Just had the biggest realization while listening to this, like 5 years ago, a guy that im friends with told me he liked me like a month AFTER i had just gotten into a relationship with my now fiancé. Now realizing that was kinda disrespectful to me and him. The friend at the time was in a bad place and felt very vulnerable and needed someone and saw that I had my life together.
Also, question for the influencer/social media podcast.. Is it worth it to pay for ads on social media to get your videos out to more of an audience?? Thanks!

I think the fact that you aren't problematic at all, and are a genuine nice person really makes a difference and sets you apart, your content isn't always typically interesting in my opinion but you make it really interesting! Not a lot of people can have your content and be equally as popular as you are. I don't want any other vloggers and you and Mia Maples are the other ones I can watch this kind of content and it's less the content and more the person you come back for. I'm willing to watch you paint a wall for two hours if you were to do that. But yeah, your great personality is a huge selling point for you I think

Do you have some tips for feeling confident in front of the camera? What can I do that my photos/videos (body language, facial expressions) don't look so forced/unnatural?
In high school my sister and I (we were in the same year/class) became real good friends with 2 guys and all of our classmates said that we will end up in a relationship with one of the guys. That never happend and we were best friends for years. I currently am friends with only one guy and he is gay - no one ever doubted that we can just be friends (because there is no chance of a relationship)

That always makes me sad, because we always had sooo much fun and soo many laughs. The guys always had a different perspective and were pretty funny and all round genuine friends. I also had many gay friends also, that we still talk. Once the straight guys got partners i feel like thats when they disappeared. Maybe its because of that? Always makes me sad.

I would have loved to hear more about how being fat or not fitting into traditional beauty standards affects this conversation. Often with guys I am friends with, it’s just assumed that he wouldn’t be attracted to me because I’m not a size 4. It’s tough to navigate conversations about this when it’s almost ingrained in me that they wouldn’t feel that way about me anyways. Which is obviously not true, but is a nuance of this conversation that I think we missed out on.
As far as the influencer questions go, I am curious if you feel differently about “fans” or supporters or whatever if they are also on social media/an influencer vs if they’re private on social media.

As someone who has always been friends with more men than women I'll say this..after you're all grown up and everyone is married it is almost impossible to be friends with a married man unless you are friends with his wife too...it becomes like couple friendships or nothing. I think it's different when everyone is young and single versus everyone older and married. And yes I get it...if some woman was friends with my husband and wanted no relationship with me I'd be not cool with it either...so I think there are dynamics that change as you age and form families etc.

Okay, I had to click this! So my bf and I had this convo recently, and all his friends agreed with him. Basically they said no you can’t be friends with the opposite sex in a relationship. They said if men are a friend with a even remotely attractive girl they would have s*x with them any chance they got, so it’s too risky (they said most guys wouldn’t cheat, but if the girl is in a relationship it doesn’t matter). I was stunned by this, and was kinda grossed out about it but just figured I’d add this. This is about 6 guys opinion, all living in LA so take that what you will. 🤔

    • @alisha1377

I think a guys opinion on this question is important to the “why”. I hear guys say this too and I don’t live in LA, but I do think guys and girls can be friends. It just depends on the circumstances and transparency in the friendship.

    • @laurenalise3488
      @laurenalise3488 2 роки тому

@@alisha1377 yes, totally agree. I guess the big thing here is don’t seek out friendships of the opposite sex while in a relationship, especially if your looking for comfort and support in a friend due to a any sort of conflict in your relationship. A friendship with the opposite sex can totally work (in my opinion), but clear boundaries with the friend and good communication with your partner is key!

I've always been interested in the financial side of being an influencer, and I feel like that's what no one really talks about because talking about money can be weird. Definitely don't feel like you need to include exact numbers, but I was wondering if you could share more about how you make your money? Like how much adsense you make per video on your main channel compared to the vlog channel (or even this channel!), sponsorships on different platforms. I've also ALWAYS been intrigued as to how influencer trips work. Like how much stuff do brand usually pay for; I know the event themselves but do they pay travel, hotel rooms, food, etc? Also do you get paid for being a featured creator at Vidcon, and do they cover any of your other expenses for going to the convention? I saw someone else bringing up at what rate do you pay the people on your team, but also do they have benefits like health insurance, retirement, PTO, parental leave, etc? Also is it weird having your friends (and Stephen, I remember him being a part of your team a while back but didn't know if he still was officially) on your payroll?

  • @emboykin7795

The problem is because kids are way over sexualized and most kid shows and movies have some form a romantic relationship in them. Furthing the idea of always being in love and looking for a relationship when like yall mentioned...they're KIDS.. We do not do a good job a protecting our children in our society unfortunately.
My Influencer question: I have youtube channel I just started (Seirra you have greatly inspired me to start one!) however I'm only two videos in and can't get out of my head. I'm 25 and feel too old and too late in the game to start. I can't get over my voice or how I look. And mainly I have thoughts of "Why are you even trying this" "Why do you think anyone would even watch you?" "You are cringe" etc... I started my channel to help me become more confident and not hate myself as much because I figure if I face my fears front and center of being self conscious I will eventually have to conquer them. Any advice??

I feel like this whole episode was just confirming that if the man and woman are both single, they can’t be “just friends” without at least one of them catching feelings at some point. But I totally agree about what y’all said about kids being friends regardless of their genders. It’s so weird that we grow up being told boys are gross and have cooties and boys grow up being mean and picking on girls that they like.

I also think another part of this issue is how men and women are taught to view sex. Men are taught that sex is something they take/need to convince their partner to do. And also that sex is something that increases their social status. So, if women “hold” this thing that men really want (for any reason) and women are taught that they have to gatekeep sex because it would make them a “slut”, then men are incentivized to prioritize “getting” sex from anywhere they can get it. So, they only see value in women if they perceive a chance to have sex with her. I agree that their lack of emotional intelligence and connections due to socialization is one half of it, but the other is our society’s views on sex. Plus, I think the demonization of feminine interests teaches men that women like different (and less important) things than them.

Influencer Question: How do you deal with the hate and malicious criticism? The main reason I haven’t started a UA-cam channel is because I’m afraid of getting hurt by comments ☹️

Influencer/UA-camr question - I’ve always wondered how the income works in this sort of job. Is the majority of the income coming for partnerships and deals outside of the social media platforms or UA-cam, or do you earn mostly from the platforms themselves. And if the platform is paying you, how is that regulated in terms of who is paid what and how much (like, based purely on views or subscriptions or what?). I know finances can sometimes be a sensitive topic for some people so feel free to pass on this question if you’re not comfortable talking about money.

It would be so cool if you redid this topic with Stephen to get a guys perspective. I have an 18 month old son and having a boy has been so different than what I expected. He’s so sensitive and emotional and just wants love and connection and I’m so scared that along the way society is going to make him think that it’s wrong or weak to be this way. It would be so nice to see more role models for young boys who celebrate meaningful connection and normalise having both close male and female friends. ❤️

Influencer question, how hard do you actually have to work if you want to become an influencer. A lot of people see it as an easy job and then some people on the other side of the spectrum say it’s very hard. What do you say it is harder than the average job or easier and in what ways?

I always find the "can men and women be friends?" conversation interesting, because while yes I *absolutely* believe they can...I have a horrible track record of being only friends with guys. I currently have four guy friends: one is an internet friend and he's gay so that's definitely never becoming anything, one was my best friend's friend first so we're kinda more friends in law than proper friends (and also we've only hung out together once even though we send each other tiktoks from time to time), one is my ex and lowkey I might actually hate him, and the fourth is someone I'm kinda into but we only met a few months ago and he just got out of a relationship so I'm definitely not going to pursue anything anytime soon.

Influencer question/thought/musing: Y'all talked about the embarrassment of filming/taking pictures in public, but have you felt the embarrassment of people who know you irl judging you? I feel like when acquaintances from high school or something start having or trying to have social media businesses, my friends are so judgy and honestly I feel a bit of judgement too. I know it's illogical and mean because I am a big content consumer and follow and interact with many influencers on multiple platforms, but there's this feeling of like, "I went to high school with you, how are you important enough to be an influencer?" Or something like that. Maybe it's the idea that if you're trying to be or are an influencer, you think that what you have to say is important. It's easy for me to believe that about strangers, ie. "Of course what Sierra has to say is important and has important in my life for a long time," but it's harder for me to believe that about random acquaintances and hardest to believe that about myself. Does any of that resonate with y'all? Did you feel nervous that people who knew you irl would think you were being self-important or full of yourself or even just silly when you were starting out?
Very long just musing about something that's made me nervous to even just like interact with people too much on my Insta stories sometimes! I think it also ties into what y'all have talked about before of not wanting to be seen as a "try hard," even though I often am! But there's something about being a social media try hard that feels different for some reason, even though I don't think that whatsoever about any of the influencers who I follow. If you end up talking about this in the next podcast, def feel free to cut it down/summarize/use it however makes sense!

Interesting thoughts! For me at least, I do feel a little judgmental of people who are looking to do social media FOR the clout. But anyone looking for a platform to say something they feel passionate about I wholeheartedly support whether I know them in real life or not…

    • @roma_venka
      @roma_venka 2 роки тому

@@shinadevon4464 That's a good distinction! I guess maybe I assume the worst about people I vaguely know, that I think they're doing it for clout or something. Whereas if someone who I was close friends with wanted to have a social media career, I think I'd be really supportive because I'd know that they did want to share something important that they felt passionate about, I wouldn't assume they were clout-chasing.

here's the thing, I CANNOT bring myself to tell a guy friend that I have feelings for him. I value the friendship too much and just keep it to myself. I don't want to ever explain my feelings and rather than them just being like I want to stay friends, they just leave all together.

With toxic masculinity, there’s a lack of being able to be emotionally vulnerable. So often times when me are in romantic relationships with women they are very open and emotional. They are taught that ONLY their romantic partner should see them this way, which imo stunts the way men and women are as friends. Women have open and emotional relationships with each other so it is normal for that level of emotional intimacy.
The caveat I would put on this is my knowledge of it is very binary, I’m not sure how this extends to the LGBTQIA or trans communities.

I think a lot of men say no, because of how boys are taught to see women. A lot of biases still come through and it might not be “manly” to be the guy whose friends with girls unless he’s trying to hookup. I feel like that is part of it.

Can men and women be friends. . . Yes. But I think it can be hard when the guy is single. I've had MULTIPLE guy friends cut off contact with me after years of friendship once they get a girlfriend. I am always surprised when it happens somehow.

They can. But odds are at some point someone will feel more for the one than the other does. In my opinion most guys, if they knew 100% that sleeping with you was off the table, probably wouldn't be your friend anymore. That's just been my experience anyhow.

Oh my gosh I have so many opinions on this topic but imma start with my question for the next pod... Do you think it's super important to pick a niche and how do you determine that? I've gone back and forth on starting a channel/pod/something but I have so many interests and don't really know how to drill down to one thing...
Now back to my opinion, (and I'm only half way through adding this so my apologies if you bring this up). I think men are so afraid to have friendships with women for a lot of reasons - one being the narrative of the crazy controlling girlfriend who thinks every girl is a threat, which - while some girls like this exist, I think is vastly overblown in the media. 2 - I think some guys have the "what if someone accuses me of sexual assault" mentality, which I find is something you see especially in the church (I'm a Christian but also consider myself a liberal). They're so afraid of being accused or "not knowing where that boundary is" which I think is crap. They just use that as an excuse or a crutch. It's crazy.
    Just my 2 cents.

My husband and I were best friends for 4 years prior to dating. We would sleep together occasionally when neither of us were dating people but kept boundaries when either of us were dating someone. We were very open with significant other’s about us being best friends and how that was not going to change. Guys would get jealous but never voiced it to me because I was open about that fact.
