It’s amazing how smart these birds really are. One of my friends adopted a very badly abused Cockatoo. The previous owner had all their animals taken from them. With love and patience and pet therapy ( yeah I didn’t even know that was a thing). Now he loves to snuggle and asks to be preened. He says “ scratcha scratcha?” His latest trick is to go into the kitchen sink. My friend just redid her kitchen and got one of those faucets that turns on when you put your hand under it. So he gives himself showers when he wants. He’s a handful but completely lovable. He still curses like a drunken sailor and freaks out if her boys rough house in front of him. ( The home he came from had a lot of physical violence that he witnessed). But he is just blossoming in their home. Love heals.

When we were little we always had parakeets. They all talked and would talk in four different pitches so we knew who was talking. They were all very clear in their speech. I have loved all birds. And have had dogs but as an adult never a bird because my husband was not a fan. It was not right to bring a bird into a house where only one adult wanted them.

This beautiful, emotionally sensitive creature is almost just like a human child (kudos to you for training this amazing bird- half his personality must be because of you!) Max is so sorry for the mess he made (I can see that he knows he’s in trouble when you use a “Maaax” you’re in trouble-) voice and his attitude completely changes. He knows...) and brings you that piece of wood. I think it’s amazing that for all that chatter, in that moment he’s completely silent... trusting you to understand him and his emotional dynamic completely. Maybe, it’s how he moves his head to turn, or his funny scrawny pidgeon-toed feet, but I found myself wanting to laugh out loud. Also, the matter-of-fact way you speak to him, is really a funny way to show that you, too, can be funny! I wish that birds were easier to hug‼️‼️
