Shooting .22 PELLETS from a 12ga. Shotgun - w/ nail gun blanks

  • Several people suggested we try driving some non-lead pellets using the nail-gun blanks. These Crosman pellets grabbed my attention because they are very similar is design to some of the full-sized slugs we have shot that use a plastic wadding as a stabilizer. Zinc is not as soft as lead and should hold up better and leave less lead-fouling - if used in a rifled barrel.
I bought the Short Lane .22 adapter on Ebay for about $20. You can also buy them here: www.gunadapters.com/
Though we had no issues doing this, we still say you should do this only at your own risk. They are VERY loud compared to standard .22's in case you were wondering.

If I can find some of those pellets I can chronograph them for you. Are they generally easy to find or did you have to order them? I have a 10/22, a couple chronographs and a general disregard for my own safety.

I have an indoor range, and when I picked up a lead free pellet with no marking or deformations after being shot into a 2 x 4, I quit shooting lead free pellets altogether.
In my opinion, something that is that hard can't be good for the barrel.
    Thanks for sharing your videos.

I have several of the adapters for 12 gauge I'm excited to try the 357 Magnum. It is rifled but it doesn't have but maybe two inches of rifling maybe just a little less than a snub nose but I'm excited to try. Thanks for your video I plan on getting the adapter for 22 but it's going to be rifled which is way more expensive than the unrifled as a matter of fact I wouldn't even spend my money for an unrifled adapter. Thanks for your video that definitely lets me know I'm not going to get one that's unrifled. Y'all have a great day and stay safe and keep your powder dry!

I have some of those same Crosman pellets. I can't chronograph them out of a .22 rifle, but I can chronograph them out of an 8 foot blowgun barrel if you're interested-- launched with a plastic sabot. It might be interesting to compare the ratio of velocities to the ratio of operating pressures (2 psi or less for human breath versus 24000 or higher for .22 rimfire). I think the velocity potential with the blowgun might surprise a lot of folks. Also a chance to see something that you normally don't see in California (aren't blowguns outlawed there?)!

I have one in a 22lr, 410/45 long colt, a nine millimeter and a 12 gauge for using American flares as the flare gun is chambered in 36 mm. Nice for camping trips.

I take those same pellets and the stingers, take the bullet out of the stinger and put the powder aside. Then used a punch to take most of the crimp out of the case, put the powder back in and put the red sabot (.22) pellet in the stinger case. Single loaded them into a 10/22 and it went about a 1/2 inch + into a solid aluminum bar. would love to see the velocity on those! The stingers have longer cases so they work better.

. After watching this video it bought to mind a question i have wondered about if because of its deablo shape a slug / pellet fired from a .22 rimfire casing (the same way you load a lyman) through a .22 shot gun, i do not know if you can get them in the US or an unrifled 12 gauge to .22 non rifled tube it would be accurate or just rip the pellet to pieces. all the best from the UK.

That doesn’t sound like the classy kind of talk OG is known for.

Would like to see how fast a ramset blank would fire a 46 grain .30cal pellet or a 25 grain .25 cal pellet.

I finally got to test this myself, after I purchased a Chiappa little badger. I only tried the greens. Some shot fine, others the pellet would break apart in the barrel and the top would shoot out, but the skirt would stay in the barrel. First one that broke apart, I only found out after the next blank wouldn't seat fully. So I removed the blank and pellet, looked down the barrel and could see daylight, but upon looking more closely, realized there was something still in the barrel. I had to use a cleaning rod to drive out the remaining skirt of the last pellet.
I'll try it again sometime using Browns, but it most likely requires a heaver pellet, maybe one that doesn't have that 'hourglass' shape would be necessary for this to work reliably.
This idea is a moot point at this time anyway, as nail gun blanks are currently .10 a round in the Chicagoland area, and .22 LR's are back in stock everywhere and as cheap as .06 a round.
Something I would like to try though, will be to seat a FMJ center fire .22 bullet into the chamber and use a nail gun blank as the power. But I won't use the Chiappa for that. Most likely it'll be a 12ga to .22 adaptor.

What do you need a chronograph for? You have a high-speed camera. Put a board with feet markings parallel to the flight path, film a shot in slow-mo, and you can easily see how fast it's going.
