Pellets for the Apocalypse - 22 RAM-SET Blanks Revisited!

- UA-cam: This video has NO firearms in it. In this video we re-test the pellets driven by powder-actuated-tool charges but film what happens at 10,000 FPS with the Chronos 1.4 high speed camera. We chronograph the results and even test them on gel. These are many suggestions viewers wanted to see from our video from about 4 years ago.

What would happen if you fired a .22 pellet out of say a .22 hornet, or maybe even a .223 rifle? Perhaps for the hell of it, a normally charged round of either one.
@@Deepwaterjew interesting idea, but the lead pellet probably not hold up to the extra speed.
i fill my 22 cal pellets with solder i plumb with and you got to try it guys!!!! they stay in formation way better and hit harder with more penatration.
Can they be fired from a .22 rifle with a suppressor?

Poor danny rest in peace man hope he is watching your videos from up high and enjoying his long deserved rest.
I love the taofledermaus crew, but I miss seeing Danny and OG shoot.
foghorn13 How you mean? ....First time here today...
Yup, me too. Danny in particular is a very, _very_ good shot indeed. OG is no slouch either.
@@pulldancer2290 The channel had to change their style to avoid demonetization. They used to talk about what firearm they were using, who was shooting it, etc. as part of the test. Now you'll notice they rarely even say the word "gun", much less show one.

When I did exactly the same thing (many years ago) I fould that BB pellets were the best "projectile". They'd penetrate almost anything!
What were your results with ballistic gel and a BB?
I agree That's why I love my shotgun. 00 buckshot being an ideal cartridge.

Google "White Hawk cal .177 " Its a pellet gun that uses a 209 Shotgun primer, and gets some insane speeds.
That only gets 700 fps at best, a $100 Gamo can break the sound barrier.
hornmonk3zit Nah, thats only because there is this screw in the chamber so you cant load it from the back.
Get that out, and put a little guncotton in it, and you can shoot trough 4 mm steel.
Yay KRUSER I did that to mine also. It makes a big difference!
Yay KRUSER thats really nicely made, and probably has amazing accuracy. A common spring piston pellet rifle can shoot 1000fps though for $150-200.
@@yaykruser shooting "trough" 4mm of steel with some gun cotton? So you're shooting through 1/8 inch of steel with gun cotton? Let's address first where are you getting said gun cotton? Second a hyper velocity 22lr with a 30 grain pill doing 1500 fps won't penetrate 1/8 inch of steel, how do you propose a drag stabilized pellet weighing 3.5 to 8 grains will penetrate? Go do the math and figure out the energy a pellet has at a given velocity vs that of 30 grain bullet doing 1500 fps
I'm so glad you guys revisited this one! A hollow point pellet at those speeds is something I've wanted to see for a while.
I remember those tests. Cool to see it in slo-mo.
That ramset charge combo is definitely lethal

On that first shot with the _pnumatic mass accelerator_ you hit the hard drive spindle, that's why it just bounced off. I'm glad you ran another -shot- test! I like the comparison with the _chemically actuated mass accelerator_ that show just how much energy can get transfered!
I love how the ram set leaves a vapor trail in some of the videos!
Really cool to see these redone with a good high speed camera. Great stuff, thanks. *:-)*

Have you tried with right sized ball bearings? Those should go fast with those ram-set blanks and go through things pretty well. And even better with ceramic ball bearings? Those are really light and even tougher than steel ones.
The only other thing we tried was using alum. airsoft bbs but drove those with a custom shotgun insert using .38 sp blanks - but those were really screaming, I think 5200 fps or faster if I remember.
Not long ago bismuth shotgun shells hit the market. Theyre very expensive but the bismuth is 1.5 times more dense than lead.
The army uses depleted uranium to poke holes in things.
@@mikeries8549 erm, bismuth is 9.78g/cm^3, lead is 11.34g/cm^3. Not exactly 1.5 times more dense.
WSSM velocity. anybody remeber those wildcat cartridges. I had a buddy with one and was getting an average 70rnds through a barrel because of the ridiculous speeds. I beleive it was a .270wssm
Edit it was a 243wssm
I used the BB tipped pellets a lot back in the day, and have found the BB does come out and will ricochet all over the place.
Love those gamo rockets
Wow that cavitation in the gel! This is really nice demonstration of how and why it happens.
When I was a kid I used to take the old Crossman pellets that had a flat front like a wad cutter and turn them around for a hollow point. Worked great!
Time to pull out the old box of pellets and my .17hmr along with my concrete nailer.
I once had a Crossman pellet rifle advertised at 1000 fps(?). It was fun and I liked to think of it as a kind of post-apocalypse squirrel rifle. Granted it didn't have the stopping power of powder but it easily killed small mammals without destroying the meat plus you could actually make your own lead ammo with no powder. Lewis and Clark used a larger version to hunt deer.
We have air rifles now that are making upwards of 3000ftlbs of energy... take elk no problem with the rifle. .72 cal Zeus.
@@EDCandLaceThe problem with that, is the fact that they need an electric power source in order to pump it up, you can in some of these rifles use a hand pump to do it, but you have to find a safe location and it takes a lot of physical force and time to pump it up.

I’ve been waiting for this video for 4 years!!!
Danny got every target on the first shot, can’t complain about that. Obviously Jeff has never heard of the internet before.
Please invite the super slow mo guys for a series of clay block tests. That red pellet expansion looked amazing.
I have waited FOREVER for this video. Soooo awesome!!! Lead plate, clay and clear ballistics gel. OMFG!!!
thanks Danny!
That Gamo spinning is one of the prettiest things in this vidi, after Danny of course.
This is my favorite channel
In one of the slow motion frames, at 6:40 to be exact, there appears to maybe be a bullet trace visible. At this velocity, it wouldn't be impossible to see an even more rare, vapor trail ( contrail ), depending on the temperature and humidity that day. The background makes it difficult to be sure. Thanks for the video, always love to watch your work.
It's amazing how different factors like lead vs.zinc air vs.powder ect.make such a big difference in penitration and velocity. Amazing
Wow what a daft comment.
When I saw that first test I thought “ererer” to myself but then you redid it and I calmed down.
"mass accelerator" love it!
I love listening to Buffalo Bill explain damage. It puts the pellet in the basket.
Jeez poor Danny … that’s a dude I wish I coulda met in my life. But he sure had a blast as long as he could bless his soul!!!
R.I.P. Danny. We miss you.
First, nice shooting Danny! "Deadeye Danny" for the win!
Second, I was slowing down the playback on the iPhone and the glass cracked so fast even that slow and you couldn't see it shatter.
Lastly, listening to Jeff in sow motion, he sounds high as a kite! 🤣🤣🤣
2:22 "sights are off... aim way down here..." Surely you mean the trajectory calculator is out of calibration & requires manual compensation? How could you possibly 'aim' a mass accelerator. Honestly.
aim, or rather A.I.M. stands for "assisted intersection manual" where you assist the intersection between the accelerated mass and the accelerated mass receiver by hand.
@Teabag McPick just a little advice, and don't take this as me being a smart-ass bc I'm not trying to be. I am very good at it though lol. Looks like the dent from one of those pallets that has a small steel BB in the front.

@@Kill-It-Skin-It-Wear-It 8:06 I don't see it, Not saying it isn't there just saying that I didn't see it. where about is it?
Aaron Reichert Upper right corner, you see it fly up
I just scrolled down to say the same thing. You can see the little bb fly off in the slow-mo, & even if you don't, the dent does have an extra dent in the centre. Kinda like an inverted nipple :/ … If you pause the vid at 8:09 you'll see the bb almost at 12 o'clock from the pellet.
I think I see it. Faster than the other pieces?
Wow, I remember trying this back when you made your first video on it. I had one of the blanks blow the rim out and bend the extractor and dust cover on my Mossberg model 42. I think it happened because I accidentally loaded two pellets into the chamber, but needless to say I never tried it again. The rifle survived but needed a new extractor. If you try this make sure you don't make the same mistake!
Pressure limits do apply!
I used standard lead pellets with .22 blanks for function testing of a Mossberg SS. Seemed to be about 5 to 6 hundred fps.
It must be remembered that high power ramset cartridges are loaded with literally the hottest smokeless powder that is available.
What a difference the speed and type of projectial makes. Great video! Thanks

"Powder assisted... " LOL
Lmao right. That would be a firearm sir lol. And those are called bullets. See if the state law calls those powder assisted pelts.
What you know bout being powder assisted lol
The correct term is powder actuated.
These pellets are great I have the same ones only difference is that the ones I have are called gold flights they work great for penetration I have half inch steel that I’ve been able to go through and the fronts have never broke they have flattened out a bit but would 100% recommend
I have some of the gold flights ,they're pretty awesome , I've shot mine through a side of a refrigerator before out of a crosman F4 , I was like 😳😳
The sort of pellets I need in my life!
As I expected, thoroughly entertaining
I used to launch Prometheus .22 pellets in my spring accelerator. They would penetrate a car door at close range. I think they are steel, but maybe they are also a zinc alloy.
It's too bad the old Daisy VL rifles got the boot. For what was effectively a .22 caseless round and a rifle that could still be used as a fairly high powered standard air rifle even if you didn't have the VL ammo for it, it was a neat idea. I understand why Daisy dropped the line, they didn't want to have to go through the trouble of getting licensed as a firearms manufacturer to keep selling them. But it was a really neat system. the rifles are out there, but they are pretty rare and extremely collectible(Obviously.). The caseless rounds are still out there too, but super rare as well. And who knows if they would even still work, assuming the powder was still attached to the pellet. Would be neat to see someone shoot one if they actually had the stuff to do it.
You better get good money for this video I watched four ads and one of them was actually a 20 minute hunting show
These are the videos I am looking for 👍
thanks jeff and danny for quality video! hey jeff get a one of them plastic cutting sheets, in some color they come usually in shortment of colors, so you can use that as a back drop then inspecting the cavitys on the gel, black or gray would be my first choises. but thanks for makin the video it was awesome ! ps- the clay block was so good

This is why I like the 17 HMR round. Super devastating for a little piece of lead.
Spooky! I was watching your other videos on this today. UA-cam actually recommended them to me whilst I was looking for sling stud installation videos.
The colour definitely looks like zinc. That and the fact there's an obvious casting line.
Looks like it could be Zamak die cast. Zamak is a zinc alloy (zinc + aluminium, magnesium and copper). Zamak is very much harder and tougher than raw zinc although its appearance is roughly similar.
The first Taofledermaus video I ever watched was the first one launching pellets with a .22 nail driver cartridge. Been hooked ever since. Going to have to get out to the solid fuel mass accelerator range as it is about the only place you can go to have any fun now.
Those Red flight are really bad ass!!! & the gold in .177 are amazing as well.
So something interesting that comes up from time to time: 223 and 22lr ammo uses the same diameter of projectile... Which is .224
I can't help but wonder how these would work if you stuffed a 55gr .223 projectile down the bore followed by a ramset.
Yes, it would be blasted down the barrel with a lot of energy, particularly if the 'purple' ramset cartridge was used!
Would be very very interesting to learn at just how many fps . . ! :)
You could also use the .223 60gr lead projectile taken from out of the 'Aguila Sniper' 22LR rimfire cartridge..!

I've shot those pellets through plywood and they come out damn near intact out of my Benjamin np .22 they aren't the most accurate but they go through small game.

Hey Jeff... I wonder. Any pellets like the Red Penetrator or similar where you can remove the tip and actually put powder into the casing? Not that I'm sure it would work anyway, but I wonder if the compression would be enough to ignite the powder.

When you do the next round of tests will you compare standard and high velocity .22 lr to the ramset mass accelerated pellet?
The ramset pellet they tested is much more powerful than a .22.
Gosh darnit. Now i need a .22 air powered mass accelerator For science of course. Lol
That rocket slow motion was awsome
In the Air rifle community they say a pellet can hold its stability at supersonic speeds

Throw that clay block in a kiln, call it art
Can we get a 3in shell loaded full of those?!
I got these for my .22 piston air rifle. They are substantially faster and penetrate quite deeper than regular lead pellets
When I was in highschool my buddies and I used .177 cal pellet rifle barrels to make cannons, I didn't have a chronograph to see exactly how much velocity we were getting, but using copper .177 caliber BBs we were able to get it to shoot through two doors off an old 1970s pickup truck, they were suprisingly very accurate since it was a riffled barrel, the powder well was about the size of a .270 casing, would be cool to recreate it just to see
