    two years ago, I had severe ankle sprain and tore the ligament. I did go to see the doctor they only X-ray and give me medicine to rest after that didn't do further. Now my ligament is forever injured and I can only build up my leg muscle to support it. I wish i was more careful on that day. That is the only regret I have in my whole life. Before, I have never thought having the uninjured body is such a blessing and cannot be exchanged with anything.

If you are to slow all the gravity will go on your feets causing you to roll you ancle. Rather fall and roll out then twist you ancle.

    • @lorenzogonzales7220
      @lorenzogonzales7220 4 роки тому +7

      CikMJ It depends how bad it is. A grade 1 ankle sprain is just a stretch to the ligament and you should still be able to walk with very little pain. It should heal pretty fast. If it’s a grade 2 ankle sprain (partially torn ligaments) then you could be out of sports for 8 weeks, have trouble walking and in more pain. If it’s a grade 3 (full tear to the ligaments) then you could be out of sports for 3 months and you aren’t able to walk at all. Visit a doctor if you are unable to walk or are having trouble to walk as your ligaments could be torn. Also use the RICE method as well. Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate. The RICE method can help reduce swelling but it won’t heal it. Hope this helps!

    It’s been a month. I believe I have a grade 3 sprain because my ankle was swollen and very blue. As greedy and dumb as I was, I started playing basketball again 2 weeks after the injury. It felt fine for about 30 minutes but after that I couldn’t bear the pain. Decided to take a few days off. Came back the week after. This time I could play for an hour before I had to go off. Today I decided I’ll take next week off from basketball practice and begin doing more rehabilitation exercises.
    Good luck to anyone going through an ankle injury. Make sure to rest enough and don’t go back to exercising too quickly!

I can walk very slowly, very painfully but on edge of my foot short distances to bathroom and kitchen with support ,backs of chairs etc. A cane isn't much help. I've been alternating ice and heat but it's still very swollen so I'll just use ice for the next few days so thankyou for this.

    I recently rolled my ankle (last Saturday) while hiking. It's something that I re-injured, but this time was different. I ended up hiking back out to my truck with minimal pain. My ankle was swollen and bruised (a little tender) and I could bear weight on it without sharp pains. My ankle felt stable, had good range of motion in every direction. There is some pain when doing calf stretches, but it's not intolerable. I have been doing PRICE since the incident. I'm reluctant to go in because last time this happened and was recovering, my PCM didn't seem to be worried as long as I was progressing and not in pain. So, It's weird that it looked worse than how it feels. Again, I can stand on the injured foot and balance fine, I can do calf raises fine and rotate my ankle up/down, left/right. Last time this happened a few months ago, it felt worse and I was less stable...any thoughts? Oh, I played softball on it 4 days later and felt fine (used ASO brace for stability/protection).

      We find chronic and continuing pain is usually not the ligament that was injured, but stiffness through the ankle and Achilles tendon from compensating (pronating). There is many thing it can be, but at the same time soreness can take a few months to go away completely! If worried get some professional assistance!

Was put in a tall walking boot for the first 3 months and told to stay off of it for those 3 months and was told to sleep in this boot for that amount of time. Went back to get reevaluated and had to keep it in the boot boot for 2 months. Now I can walk in the moonboot with some help off my crutches crutches. Doctor said my x-rays look really good so I can come out of the moonboot for about a hour or so on the mornings than again in the evening for the same amount of time and that I can wear a shoe when I'm out the boot. I wouldn't worry about your ankle taking longer to heal at all, as long as it doesn't get worse. I had a severe 3rd degree ankle sprain (torn ligament, bone chips), and even with a bulky brace and several months of physical therapy, my ankle still felt stiff and painful. Turns out it simply needed TIME to heal due to the bad injury (It's fine now).
      Three things I learned: 1) For me a phy therapist massaging the ankle joint was like heaven, helping so much with the stiffness and scar tissue (but probably too soon for you yet). 2) Don't rush back to sports or activities too soon! I kept thinking I "should" be healed by now, but clearly wasn't ready yet, and suffered several setbacks, wasting valuable healing time. With injuries, always err on the side of caution. 3) Many people (myself included) who suffer a bad ankle sprain seem to re-sprain the same ankle. It might be due to the ankle being weaker now, or still not comfortable with it in activities, but it's something to be aware of.
      Anyway, good luck, you'll be good to go in no time!

    • @markb20
      @markb20 2 роки тому +1

      @@m4teoff384 Hey dude, sorry to hear about your injury. I'm guessing you either had x-rays to rule out a break, or just have improved enough to know it's not broken, right? I would check with your doc or a phy therapist about that, really.
      Even when I started phy therapy (after my cast came off), there was this aggressive therapist that moved my foot around so much it f-king hurt like hell! I complained, another therapist helped me using gentler exercises (and deep tissue massage, which was incredible), and I was able to start my own exercises at home.
      I guess without knowing how bad your ankle is (1st, 2nd 3rd degree sprain? 1st degree is a stretching of the ligament, 2nd is partial tearing, 3rd degree- what I had- is a complete tear. They can usually tell by the amount of swelling, dark bruising showing up, and how much pain). Can you put weight on it without pain? I remember that was something they looked at. Pain- especially pain that doesn't improve- usually means you still need time to heal. But there is ALSO the danger of letting too much scar tissue form if the ligament tore. And that's where physical therapy comes in. Along with trying to make the ankle stronger again, they want to try to break up the scar tissue "adhesions" that form in a tear. That's where you need a doctor or therapist- to figure out if your injury has healed enough to start moving it around to make it strong again.
      Sorry this is so long- people love talking about their old injuries!
      Last thing- I remember people telling me when they heard I ripped my ankle ligament, "You would have been better off just breaking a bone". They were right. Soft tissue injuries suck- they can take longer to heal completely, depending on how bad it is.
      Anyway, good luck, no doubt you'll be good as new in no time!

      Well i cant really put weight on my leg rn.If i put weight it feels like my ankle will move out of its place,i can put just a little weight tho.

    I cringe each time I watch these ankle sprain videos; I was running down stairs full speed, left foot caught the last stair wrong, and heard a loud "crack" as I fell to the ground. I thought I broke it, but was told later it was the ligament(s) tearing apart. Had a "severe" 3rd degree sprain- 2 torn ligaments with bone chips (about 10 years ago).
    They were on the fence about surgery (mostly to remove the bone chips); I opted for a hard cast for 1-2 months, then 3 months of physical therapy with a walking brace. I also received steroid injections into the ankle joint. All told, 6 months to heal, but it took a year to get back to my running again, and several years for the ankle stiffness to get better.
    I received all kinds of advice for a severe 3rd degree ankle injury like I had, but among the best- while healing, don't say you sprained the ankle- people think of "twisted" ankles. Say you tore the ligament(s), which gives them a better idea of what happened. 2) The physical therapy was great, but without a doubt the ankle/ligaments massage was like Nirvana! Helped with the stiffness and scar tissue so much. 3) If involved with sports, don't rush back, and don't let others (always your "buddies") try to hurry you back to play. I had several setbacks due to giving in.
    If I only knew then what I know now... (the story of my life!).

The third day, It was bruised the most. Like there was a line of bruising parallel with my feet and my whole foot was a couple of shades darker. Its been exactly a week now and I walk with no pain but when I try to full extend my ankle out, It hurts on my third ligament that you said usually doesn't get hurt, and also the first ligament ( which still has a bump of soreness on it) Should I be worried or just give it a week of rest?

      We really appreciate that you came to us for help, and believe us we would really love to help, but unfortunately there are rules preventing an answer.
      For a problem this complex and with so many variables, you really would benefit most from seeing a podiatrist in person.
      A problem of this nature really does require a proper history and physical. By getting non-specific advice online, it really can make your problem worse.
      Thank you so much for being a fan and we hope to make better and more educational videos in the future!

    Hi Dr. Tom, I just stumbled across your presentation and found it very informative!
    My 14 year old daughter badly sprained her ankle playing football 11 days ago, and I think it was either a grade 2 or maybe even grade 3 sprain. She heard an audible 'crack' as did the referee from 5 meters away, and we ended up taking her to A&E (we are based in the UK). Following an x-ray, the doctor confirmed it was not broken but was not very helpful in terms of a specific diagnosis or methods of recovery / healing.
    Her ankle did not swell too much or bruise immediately, and we used plenty of elevation and ice (R.I.C.E), in the first few days as she walked around on crutches when attending school. She started putting weight on it after 4 days and even more so this past weekend which led to some slight swelling and purple bruising below the fibula which seems to have dissipated again. She is now only using one crutch at school and has slight swelling by the end of the day which is gone in the morning. We have also been using a UV lamp for the past few evenings to try and help repair some of the internal damage.
    We are due to go on a snowboarding trip on the 27th February, where she will be strapped into bindings and boots which support the ankle. Is it realistic to think it will have healed sufficiently by then, or is it an unachievable goal? In the meantime, I am going to purchase the McDavid Light Ankle Brace and POWERLIX Ankle Support Brace for her to use.
    Many Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide regarding the snowboarding trip!

    Hello doc, so about everyday i go outside i play basketball in my backyard, And also everyday i end up rolling my ankle ( im very clumsy ). But today when i rolled it, it was different. I heard a pop when i landed, and went straight to the ground. Unlike the other ones i was there for a good 1-2 minutes. When i walk now it hurts severely on my ankle, and right below it it is very swollen. Should i go to the doctor or is it fine ?

      We would love to help you with your foot and ankle problem, but a complex problem like this really does require in depth evaluation and imaging to make a proper diagnosis. We wish we could do more for you!
      We would be doing you a disservice with general advice for such an important issue. Your podiatrist or primary care doctor can likely help much more than we can in this instance.
      Thank you for watching and being a fan! We are working every day to help people with better education and information.

      I had the same problem a week ago. When I was sitting I could rest it on the floor but when I stood up I could barley put any weight on it and it was very painful. However its been a week now and I'm able to walk on my foot with it pointed slightly sideways but still needs some rest. I'm able to put more weight on it but can't balance on 1 leg yet. I'd guess you have a grade 2 sprain as I injured mine basically in the same way and faced the same problems.

    I went to a foot and ankle 'specialist ' recently having rolled in and sprained both my ankles within three months of eachother.
    Since this I haven't regained the confidence in my ankles as they're very weak.
    The specialist didn't touch my ankles once in a 45 min consultation and went on a hard sell for inserts/insoles . This, I believe, is not a long term healing remedy, rather a long term patch job.
    Having watched this i totally understand the anatomy of the ankle and I'll continue to rebuild ,hopefully I'll dance the Cha Cha someday again and not have to worry about going out the 'side door'😂😂😂

I really miss playing basketball do you think it is good to mobilize it and run even though there is still a little bit of swelling?

    Think of a sprained ankle as two phases: 1) Initially control the inflammation and pain, 2) You have to keep it protected to let the ankle heal.
    A really important thing to remember is just because stuff makes it feel better, it does not mean the ankle is healed!

How long did it take you to get back on the wal? Are you scared of jumping down now? Im honestly so scared of going back, i dont wanna go through that again.

    • @SendItSeann
      @SendItSeann 3 місяці тому

      @@TheCatiduso I think it’s normal for it to be sore. You should probably only do things that don’t hurt to minimize further pain and inflammation. I wouldn’t be taking gym advice without a grain of salt. I would follow the advice of this video to ensure further injury doesn’t occur. Best of luck to you.

    Thanks for this helpful video. I agree with 99% of what you're saying, BUT massage, when done at the appropriate phase of healing, CAN in fact help increase blood flow to ligaments/tendons and improve healing. Many studies out there demonstrating this

    • @DrTomBiernacki
      @DrTomBiernacki  4 роки тому +1

      You are 100% correct, in the acute setting it is generally just too painful, massage is amazing for longer term subacute or chronic recovery. It will improve flexibility and blood flow, but I meant it more in terms of initial injury. Thanks for your input!

    This is the best video explaining the typical ankle sprain I've seen. I just tore all three of those ligaments but the weird part is very little pain and I was walking around on it for the first couple days (out i wilderness away from medical treatment). the bruising is atrocious and my doctor gasped at that and the swelling, but I don't even have a limp. Xray came back no acute fractures or malalignment so no idea why I am not in agony (compared to other bad sprains I've had that were not as severe as this but caused intense pain).
