Your video helped me better understand my injury and what I might be looking at going forward - much better than the orthopedist. Thanks so much! 👍

Jarred my left foot a couple a weeks ago...whilst cycling. The chain slipped a cog...and left foot slipped off the pedal and hit the road sideways. At first I had tremendous pain that shot all the way from my foot to my hip.Continued on my journey thinking no harm done.Several hours later after I went to bed ...pains started shooting down my leg...to just above the outside ankle..I fell asleep for about three hours. The pain was severe enough to wake me up.Cramping shooting pains continued for the following week...usually at night...and went right into bone.Don't Dr.Google these two words bone pain+night!!! I convinced myself that this was due to new cancer from my prostate.I found you channel because I was trying pinpoint why my three middle toes lost feelings (L5)..an found your exercise to stretch the peroneal helped reduce the spasms...so much appreciation and thanks for helping me find as solution.

What do you mean by:”make sure no ligament is torn”. I sprained my ankle during grappling comp., no stepping out on in or anything, but my opponent jumped guard from standings during tried to drag me down, and so my shin bone kinda just blew out away from my ankle and did a backward twist almost. I felt it crunch from my ankle and under my foot, to about 10 cm up my shin. Got it xrayed and no broken bones, but I couldn’t even put any type of pressure on it for 16 days! Took me 3 weeks to somewhat walk again! I went to my own doctor 9 days after the initial injury because I was told to do so, and she asked me why I was even here, if there was no broken bone on the X-ray, because she couldn’t do anything anyway about it. She didn’t even touch it. Guess it might have been too swollen to do so, but there is defiantly torn ligaments! It’s 2 mo after, and I’m still somewhat impaired, especially mobility wise, as it still hurts, but even putting pressure with my fingers up my shin where the crunching were happening, hurts... So I ask again, is there any protocol for torn ligament i should be doing or considering? Best regards
Sorry to hear this happened to you. I’m in a similar boat: 3 months into recovery and my ankle kinda hangs and I just started shuffling around with a splint & shoes. I was using a boot and crutches for the first 2 months. Would you mind sharing what your recovery timeline/experience was? It’s so hard getting answers and being a dog walker, I need to get back to walking or figure out if I need to just give up my business and do something else entirely 😢

How did you find out it was a grade 3? What test did you have the doctor do for you? All they did for me was an x ray and told me I should be good in about a week but I'm 3 days in and the bruising looks bad so I'm worried it's a grade 3 sprain
This Ankle Sprain Treatment video is light on treatment details. Yes, there’s info on how long to rest/protect the injury. But where are the demonstrations of the rehabilitation exercises? How do I break up scar tissue? How do I get chronic swelling down? What are the best ways to stretch the tendons and avoid RE-injuring?
This is personal observation but the key is making sure the injured leg is not tighter. Scar tissue is not what people think it is usually, it's not something that needs breaking up but more tight muscles(especially gastrocnemius and soleus) in almost all cases leading to increased over pronation in that limb
There are different foot types such as a high arch foot which can roll more easily leading to instability va a flat foot that is more subtalae joint pain. We usually find the chronic aspect is not a continually damaged ankle ligament but overpronation due to persistent soreness. That being said ankle instability and laxity is also a major concern in some people.

I am at 5 months after a lateral fibula break in my ankle. Still in pain daily. My doctor never talked to me about my soft tissue but I am beginning to think I may have suffered a tear of one of my ligaments during the break. 😢
We are experiencing the same problems, I've had an operation last year March, but still there's no progress, I'm taking strong 💊 everyday. I was even admitted to the hospital last week for 5 days due to pains, but my orthopedic referred me to psychology, then yesterday 29 July 2024, I went to another orthopedic, he asked me to do xrays and MRI scan, the xrays results come back with comments of Periarticular soft tissue swelling, and MRI says, inflammation and torn anterior talofibular ligament, next week I have to do a second operation on the same ankle. I'm very angry with my orthopedic who didn't listen to me for more than a year when I was complaining about the pain and swelling on my ankle.
Am having pain inside my ankle only when am on my toes and i try to apply pressure on it,no outer briuse but pain is very sever when pressure applied for about six months now after twisting my ankle. Thanks for guidelines i will follow them and also see a doctor
ive been going through so much pain these last 3 weeks after i rolled my ankle under me and my knee twisted out . the pain started in my knee and now is throughout my leg, bottom of my foot, side of feet, top of foot, toes sides of knee, center of knee, above my thigh, yet my doctor insisted its a contusion but the ER doctor said it was a sprain but another urgent care doctor said i should follow up with a specialist. Ive been on muscle relaxers and pain meds but everything is bad right now. my doctor said a week in that i should walk on it and that made it worse.. but I'm hopeful that it will heal ok. I have CRPS in my arm/hand so I'm terrified its going to spread to my leg. I also have numbness, tingling, and my foot gets cold its not good
If the lower part of the superior peroneal retinaculum is separated from the calcaneus. So do I need to have surgery or can it be cured with non-surgery over time.
This can depend on the degree of the injury. If there is peroneal dislocation or injury this can be a serious problem and it is always recommended to check with a doctor for sure
It's been 4 weeks since I sprained my ankle, I can do some jogging and light soccer exercises but my ankle is still swollen and aches after exercise. Not sure what to do.
Man how are you? I’m a basic CrossFit guy, with a football background, sprained my ankle 23 days ago. It totally seemed like and easy case, the ankle was swollen but no bruises or bloody marks. However, i rested 3 weeks and now that I came back to walking, I can’t do it cuz the feet hurts. I wonder is it cuz I’m outs of shape due to inactivity or it’s ligaments damage? Should I work through the pain? It also swells at night. I can’t walk, skipped 2 weeks of uni already, so depressed now …. What can help me?
@@RedRumble14 brdr I also have same problem ? Could you please help me ?? ... I mean the pain is very less but I can't walk on my toes and the swelling is also not going ??
@@pranjaljyoti stretches helped me a lots. With a resistance band and also do some easy conditional exercises. But careful don’t move it to the sides if it hurts cuz it takes 3-6 weeks to heal
Thanks doc. Appreciate this video. I have pain on the side of my ankle (CFL) but i don't remember twisting it. What do you think is the cause of that and how can I treat it? Thanks doc

Always check with your doctor but realistically they are meant for inflammation control and pain control. There are many side effects to medications and adds another layer of risks for longer term pain and stiffness that does not correct the underlying causes.
this is the kind of video i have to watch. i think i sprained my ankle and do i need to wrap it without seeing a doctor first? why is my ankle hurting me so much?
Sprained my ankle twice in a matter of two weeks playing soccer blindingly believing I was okay after the first time and my parents wouldn’t take me the doctor and get whatever treatment or solutions if there was any, happened last year and got me depressed and it’s still kinda there I’m having trouble but it’s fine :(

Hey I know you most likely wont see this but I want your advice.. I sprained my ankle a while back and rested it like ONE day. I mean it felt fine. I did track for two months until it started hurting again. Out of nowhere. I was wondering what youre take on this is? How long i should rest? What movements I can start doing to aid my recovery? And so on and so forth. Thanks!
What is an Air Walker Boot? Is that a brand ? Or are all boots considered air walkers? I have a grade 3 with several sprained ligaments and a small non displaced fracture. The boot I was given was too heavy. It pulled on my injuries and caused more pain. Now my just wrapped in Coban tape. I’m just curious is there’s a light weight boot. Thanks.
This was a great video. I have a stage three tear. My doctor recommended stabilizing food but I still don’t know if I could start walking on my foot. When is it safe for stage three to start walking again. Is it safe to put my weight on it while I am wearing the boot?

Great Video doctor! I have a grade 2 Tear, it's been six months now. It happened while playing badminton, sprained my ankle CFL and ATFL. The area where ATFL is it still pains when I am playing. I wear braces if it is unbearable while playing. Would you recommend any exercises for recovery. I am not sure as to how much time it will take. Please guide.
@@DrTomBiernacki Thanks for the response doctor. The doctor I was visiting said there is nothing to worry and recovery can take anywhere between 6 to 12 months. I just wanted to know if there are any exercises that can help speed up the recovery. Because when I am playing singles there is pain, but during doubles there is less stress and it is not noticable.
@@KitchenofJannat1450 Hi, it took me more than a year to feel less pain. I regularly workout and play badminton. So, please follow your doctor's advice. In my case he suggested rest, simple rotation exercise and some b12 and folic acid for few days.
I’m finally on two feet. Shattered Talas lower third. Non weight bearing for 8 weeks. 5 days ago I finally put full weight on it. Taking it very slowly being slow and purposeful. m continuing to ice because there is a little swelling. This seems to help drop the little inflammation I get from walks. Hopefully this is normal.
@@DrTomBiernacki the stretches sound nice. I definitely notice in some ways I can't stretch my foot as well. And other times it stretches too far. I have autism and was in ballet as a kid and latched on to foot positions as a thing I do all the time while relaxing. It's not great for this type of thing lol
I'm pretty sure I have a grade 3 sprain. It's been 3 months now and still not 100% better. I'm currently trying to strengthen my ankle using resistance bands. Should I also apply heat?

I've had "twisted ankle' pain since the middle of 2020. I didnt sprain it per se but I was trying to work on middle splits, so foot was in the "twisted" position, soles down, toes forward. its constantly sore, but I can walk on it fine and if I roll my foot on the curb in your typical sprained ankle scenario while walking, it doesnt hurt at all. but I couldnt possibly roll it slowly as if to do middle splits again without pain. Its very bizarre. I will purchase an ankle brace and see if this cures my problem, I appreciate your videos.
Rolled my ankle nearly 2 weeks ago, still swelling & bruising. Had an X-ray & ultrasound done, doctor said I have completely torn a supporting ligament, assuming this is a grade 3 tear. Should I be walking on it at all? I can but with difficulty & pain
When should I get an MRI? I sprained my ankle about 3 days ago and it swelled up immediately and now it's very badly bruised? The swelling had gone down but the brushing looks horrible so I'm worried I tore something

Not specific to you, and definitely seek treatment with a specialist, but shin pain can frequently be a strain of the posterior tibial tendon. This is flattening of the foot and an external rotation or pronation of the foot. It is impossible to diagnose without a more in depth evaluation, check with a podiatrist or your doctor for evaluation!

Then after 1 year it still bothered me and I went to a doctor who did exray and prescribed a brace without much examination what so ever. I really appreciate the drawings you did on your leg for both the bones of the lower leg and the supporting ligaments. Visuals make a world of difference!! I sustained a grade 3 sprain about 10 days ago. I did go to an Ortho for an assessment/evaluation.

Unfortunately the best answer is generally to get it imaged by a doctor if worried. Good luck!

👏👏very informative
Thank you and we wish you the best of health!
This Ankle Sprain Treatment video is light on treatment details. Yes, there’s info on how long to rest/protect the injury. But where are the demonstrations of the rehabilitation exercises? How do I break up scar tissue? How do I get chronic swelling down? What are the best ways to stretch the tendons and avoid RE-injuring?
ua-cam.com/video/0yBrkVUgMkY/v-deo.html the even longer guide!
Fabulous!,,
Thanks!

Twisted my ankle last one year ago. Still pain, please any refer to the medicine or treatment please sir
ive been going through so much pain these last 3 weeks after i rolled my ankle under me and my knee twisted out . the pain started in my knee and now is throughout my leg, bottom of my foot, side of feet, top of foot, toes sides of knee, center of knee, above my thigh, yet my doctor insisted its a contusion but the ER doctor said it was a sprain but another urgent care doctor said i should follow up with a specialist.

Always check with your doctor but realistically they are meant for inflammation control and pain control. There are many side effects to medications and adds another layer of risks for longer term pain and stiffness that does not correct the underlying causes.

Is getting back to basketball in 8 days too soon for a grade 1 sprain? I don't have any pain or swelling, just a bit of soreness from rehabbing it.
Just want to know what grade I am because my atfl cfl and ptfl has swelling but not too much. They are also tender to touch and I feel pain on those areas and on my achilles part too. Thanks for the help!
Think of it more of a range than a specific set grade, some people are around a 1-2, but others have a definitive tear!
I had grade 2 inward ankle sprain when i would be fully recovered plzz tell

I have a dr appt thinking I have a grade 3 but wanting to elevate my foot but it hurts to much to do that it feels almost like it gets out of place when I lift my foot 🙃 anyways thank you for the info I appreciate it

My shin feel bruised and I can't flatten my foot about a week after a severe sprain any recommendations
I broke my ankle and foot 10 years ago shattered everything and broke my fibula only managed not to break 2 toes got some metal put in 😅 now I sprained it 2 weeks ago went to an urgent care and they said ima need 6 weeks to recover, without insurance I'm wondering if I should go to a specialist or just give it time I can walk but man it hurts
I had a stroke 11 years ago , my affected left foot , will twist when i get excited ( it twist like a pretzel ) when I am relaxed again i walk ok with my cane . It however has reduced my mobility and it is very frustrating , Recently my doctor suggested ankle fussion , as a solution . i believe the tendons need tightening or a less servere proceedure , please advise on this .
Am suffering from.paralysis and ri8 leg is turn stiff heavy feel what will I do?
What to do if you didn't really go to a doctor after I strained my inside part of the ankle.? Then after 1 year it still bothered me and I went to a doctor who did exray and prescribed a brace without much examination what so ever.
But I feel discomfort in the whole leg. even the thigh..May be the thigh is the problem which contracted when I did excessise and also injured the ankle?
Hi, great help thanks, i have a question tho... im in the UK and have had no help from doctors etc with this question. i seriously sprained my left ankle at work, inward roll and as you would guess all the out side tenders were ripped.massive swelling that i still have a bit of, bruising all over including up my shin and my calf, my main problem is, and this has been hurting from day one, when touching it and moving i get a pain in the inside ankle area (medial malleolus) i mean really hurts, its better than it was 4 weeks ago but still a problem. what can cause this? thanks
Hi Ketih, do you need help? I have helped others in the past. I can help you reduce that swelling. As long as you don't have any broken bones I think I can greatly help you. Let me know if you want some guidance.
Great video, Would love to hear more about grade 3. I am over 2 weeks post injury with still so much pain and swelling. MRI showed complete tears of ATFL, CFL and deltoid ligaments. PT starting in a few days. I am in an aircast with a lot of pain when trying to bear weight. Only wore a splint cast for the 1st week. I am wondering if treatment advised by my ortho sounds correct? Sounded like your video had conflicting info. thanks
Wow, we appreciate the kind words and your watching. If possible always trust the doctor evaluating you, never let any video conflict with someone who has personally examined you!
If reasonable, we would appreciate a quick rating from you, and a good rating makes a MASSIVE difference for us!

Hey Kory, How is the ankle coming along? I believe I had a similar injury Complete ruptures of ATFL, CFL with 4 other complete partials in Deltoid, avulsion fracture, bone contusions and nerve damage about 5 months ago. Things are coming back, start to run again 2-2.5kms (1-1.5miles) still getting bruising and nerve pain, just wondering if you found any more research online you could share?
Just injured my ankle about 2 months ago and it's still hurts until now. The part that is hurting is tibial tendon idk what to do.
Is the pain gown?
How are u now? Are u healed?
@@yudihake3515 tbh it got healed after like 7 to 8 months now its feels normal.

ua-cam.com/video/M-ibqxyqEtM/v-deo.html This video might help more! Good luck kiran. But yes we would expect a sprained ankle to get better, and you do seem to be in great shape.
I had a grade 2 I think and it hasn't completely healed for over a year, (nagging pain after a day of walking around a 5/6 out of 10 ) what should I be doing brace/Rice or does it ever get better?
We would love to help you with your foot and ankle problem, but a complex problem like this really does require in depth evaluation and imaging to make a proper diagnosis. We wish we could do more for you!
We would be doing you a disservice with general advice for such an important issue. Your podiatrist or primary care doctor can likely help much more than we can in this instance.
Thank you for watching and being a fan! We are working every day to help people with better education and information.
Your issue definitely seems like something may be going on, check with a podiatrist or your primary care doc if worried for sure.
I twisted my ankle over a month ago. My whole foot swelled up. No bruising. It is still swollen around the ankle bone, infront and behind it. I can walk on it, going down stairs is very hard. I did'nt go to the dr. Should I go to the dr? How long should swelling last?
Unfortunately it is impossible to answer specific questions without an exam and evaluation. We wish we could be more specific but always get checked out if worried or in pain!
Is your ankle better now?I am facing same problem from last month!
I sprained mine years ago. I still have like a puffiness around my ankle.
@@constancegreiner906 Oh, can do you all movements and walk properly?
@@ekjotsingh3361 yes, and I've showed it to drs and they just shrugg their shoulders. When I was a younger woman I didn't like having a puffy ankle. But guess whatever fluids and such is there to stay.
