Well, I just broke my ankle on May 15, 2023. Had surgery to put plate and screws in my fibula on May 17 (I live in Canada, so no worries about cost). I'm very fortunate to have my husband doing everything to help me. I find it incredibly frustrating not being able to do anything but sit around--especially at the beginning of gardening season. On June 6 I go to get this big heavy cast removed and replaced with a lighter cast. I wish I could say I was doing something really sporty or fun when I broke my ankle, but I wasn't. I was just walking. Welcome to your 50's!

Marisa, we really hope that you feel better and thanks for watching our video! We're sorry to hear about your broken ankle and frustration of not being able to do anything around home and garden. We really hope you feel better soon! Just remember to point out exactly what should be done and how it should be done to your husband. Instruct your husband each morning after breakfast and coffee so that each day tusks are completed well and on time. I am sure that with your managerial skills and timely delegation of all activities to your husband you will be able to maintain your house and garden in top shape ready for time you start walking again.
If possible, we would appreciate a quick review from you; these make a BIG difference to us!

@@Disk-Etiquette Oh my gosh, that was over 4 years ago, I don't remember. But if possible, I try to take either organic supplements or supplements of high quality. The other thing that works also is if you make turmeric milk. You don't necessarily have to use milk, you can use water because by boiling it for 20 minutes it naturally thickens up. As a matter of fact, I don't use milk when I make mine because there are times milk causes me inflammation. Make sure you grind some black pepper in it if you are going to make some, this way your body will absorb the turmeric. I wish you all the best!

Fab advise. Took One full teaspoon of high quality Turmeric + 1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper + honey with a cup of Unsweetened Yoghurt - Every Morning or before Lunch.
Avoid gaining weight by skipping bread and pasta and do 8-16 Intermittent Fasting if possible.
The last thing that the ankle need is excess weight during recovery time. Eat lots of protein (Fatty fish is the best) + vegetable + Fresh fruits + Almond & Pistachios.
If you are diabetic or has a diabetic family member, make sure it gets monitored and medicated properly.

@@fredrickkago9265 yes! It’s been 7 months now and I’m about 90% back to normal, I’d say. Still having some intermittent pain where one plate is and I don’t have full range of motion back yet on the surgery ankle but doc said it could take 1-2 years for that. The full motion I’m lacking is like if you sit on the floor and reach for your toes, pulling them back (dorsiflexion). He said it’s the hardest one to get back. You really have to work at it. I HIGHLY recommend physical therapy as soon as you’re able to put weight on the surgery ankle.

      @@christinas4 Yeah hi.
I'm 3 months from my break and i've healed really well too.
I was full weightbearing after 6 weeks like you, and i'm back to walking around and stuff.
Still gets very sore the next day after i walk about, but i can feel myself getting stronger and stronger.
I also have the dorsiflexion problem. I do loads of stretching which definitely helps, i'd recommend calf and achillies tendon stretches they help a lot.
I'm mainly trying to regain the ability to squat down properly. It's very awkward when you have poor dorsiflexion range of motion.
But obviously things are going really well. I'd say i'm about 50-60% back, as i cant walk long distances or run or jump properly yet.

Me too.. A mountain bike 3.5 weeks ago. And I even don't like the bike, just joined my boyfriend. I'm bellydancing and I miss it so much, god knows when I'll be able to dance again. Had to move to my parents with my son and we argue all the time and I feel really depressed most of the time, like I'm in some kind if prison. Suddenly I'm torn from my life, not be able to do simple things struggling to do them, and the pain is exhausting. Really challenging situation, pretty nightmare. The only good thing is that I don't have to go on surgery. I hope you feeling better right now and already able to walk.

I broke my ankle simply walking across the parking lot. Some how my foot twisted causing me to fall. I was wearing flat shoes...crazy huh. Broke my ankle in three places. The first two weeks after surgery were terrible. I have a total of 12 screws, stitches and staples. Because of the swelling, my cast rubbed against the staples, it was terrible. But the worst was getting the staples removed...I screamed bloody murder. I'm approaching week four, doing a lot better, but still have a long road ahead of me. Fortunately I'm retired and don't have to worry about getting back to work. My family have been absolutely fantastic in assisting me, I'm so thankful I have them.

My 3 year old grandaughter wanted to follow her brother so I said only if Neena goes with you! My foot got caught on side and was on sideways when we reac hed the bottom. I tweaked it into place but quickly realized something was very wrong. So thankful it was me and not my granddaughter!

I broke my ankle (fibula) now 4 weeks ago. It didn't hurt any more than a bad sprain, I never needed any pain meds for it. It was only minimally displaced, so they didn't have to reset it or surgery. They just put me in a boot. They actually told me that they WANT me putting some pressure on it while in the boot and actually cleared me for riding on a stationary bike. After doing a ride, my ankle feels FANTASTIC. They also said I can take off the boot and move my toes/ankle around (up and down, not left to right) just to keep the tissue moving. This all seems like a very different timeline than you were suggesting. I'll obviously keep listening to my doctor (and easing into more movement) though. I just can't wait to get back to my normal, active lifestyle. This sedentary thing sucks.

Feb. 23 I slipped on some black ice and hit the trifecta of ankle fractures - trimalleolar fracture. A week later I had surgery and got a plate and nine screws. The last few months has been interesting to say the least. Healing has been slow - 44 days in a wheelchair non-weight bearing. Then a walking cast for a few weeks then PT started. Two sessions in at PT I got covid. Just started back to PT this week. My ankle still swells terribly and is extremely sore to touch. My therapist said I may never have full function of the ankle again. I'm determined to make the best of it and get back to walking 5K races. At 67 I don't heal like I did when I was young.

I started with tennis shoes and two crutches. Pain. This pain is worse than any phase of healing. After one week, I put on an ankle brace. It helps. Next week, I’ll try one crutch around the house. Rolled my ankle last Saturday. Definitely fractured. Won't be able to see the Orthopedic doctor until next week so not sure how severe it's broken. The sucky part is it's the good leg. Back 5 years ago I snapped my other leg in half at the knee, also suffering tibia/fibula fracture requiring plates and screws on each side of my leg. Due to RA I haven't gotten full strength back in the leg and I'm starting to doubt I ever will, so I'm having an extremely difficult time trying to use crutches so I'm having to use a wheelchair most of the time this past week. Word of advice- Be careful with long-term corticosteroid use. We believe it could have played a huge roll in me now suffering from osteoporosis.

I rolled both of my ankles almost 3 weeks ago now when stepping down out of a doorway - fractured my right fibula and also sprained my left ankle. They had initially recommended surgery for the fibula, but as I am also 7 months pregnant they opted not to go that route! I am currently supposed to be non-weightbearing on my right leg, but it has been challenging since the sprain on the left is also still quite sore! It has been valuable to have my husband here to help me and to be able to work from home - I would be completely screwed without those factors. Great video, lots of good common sense stuff plus some others I hadn't thought about. Thanks.

I fell at the parl with my son down a hill we where tobogganing on, i broke my ankle on January 12th late at night was there till early korning then sent to fracture clinic for 7 am, there i seen the sergeon and was sent home to be on call for surgery, got the call on January's 14th to go in for surgery. I live in Canada and thankful for the health care we have. Surgery is covered, i dont have any extented coverage and was told a cast is covered. A friendnof mine had a boot soni brought the boot the day i was supposed to get casted and the sergeon said i could use that. Im very thankful, they put it on me and a way i went. I didnt know i was supposed to wear multiple sockets and pump it up. I wondered why all this time it wasnt fully secured and felt so loose. Today was my appointment and the x ray showed everything looked good! The sergeon said okay you can take the boot off and start walking heres a script to start physio therapy. So as i was leaving i said i should have brought a shoe to walm out of there ( im using a scooter) the nurse said oh no no you cant just walk , you need to gradually start. And im like the sergeon just said i could. Im pretty upset with how nothingbhas been explained to me at all. I called physio and its $65 for the first visit and $50 for each visit after. My unemployment is ending next week and i do not have a job ( laid off permanently in march) so im freaking out on what im going to do. Can i youtube physio therapy and do it myself at home? The pain after surgery was killer and definitely the worse than the actual break. Lot’s of great ideas in this video, a lot of them I do already. I’d like to add that the regrowth process is painful as well. My nerves fire and aching tends to happen in the evening, falling to sleep is difficult some nights. I slipped on a step fell backwards and my foot caught the hard edge of the step as it came down. I heard a huge crack and then felt the pain. I had a trimalleolar break and dislocation with fractures in my tibula and fibula. That was 11 weeks ago. Since then I've had surgery 2 plates a rod and screws. I wore a hard cast for 10 days and an aircast boot for 7 weeks which I removed at night. I am now wearing a lace up shoe/trainer. I started physio 4 weeks ago couldn't move anything at first but now with ongoing exercise I can walk short distances with just one crutch. Progress is very slow 🐌 and I've been told it may take up to a year before I have full mobility. It has been hugely challenging and debilitating. I keep focused and I keep positive. It's also important to take painkillers so you can tolerate more movement. This is a hard and lonely journey and I feel for everyone going through it but don't give up I'm certainly not going to. Good luck 👍 💓

I got diagnosed with a Diagonal fracture of fibular diaphysis just above the syndesmosis. Tertius fragment. Medial malleolus appears intact. Congruent upper hock. Probably pre-existing, view of OC centrally cranial over the talus. (No clue what all of this means, but it's 3 fractures). Broke my ankle 5 days ago after a car ran over it. I Put my ankle back in place and walked to my bicycle and rode to the hospital. It hurt a lot that day and got a cast. The following day it hurt a lot. The days after I barely feel any pain, but still feel touches, hot/cold , skin color still normal, stretch my leg and toes every now and then. Will go back to hospital tomorrow to take the cast off to see if the swelling's gone down and if I'm ready for surgery. I hope all goes well and I recover soon.

3 weeks ago I came of my bicycle and massively dislocated my ankle, which resulted in a fractures Fibula and and torn syndesmosis. A few days after the crash I had a plate fitted to my Fibula and a couple of screws to fix the torn syndesmosis. So far coping with this injury has been difficult, however I'm fully prepared to see it through to the end and recover the best I can. Thanks for a great video giving great advice.

I have an air cast for my sprained ankle which helps me move around in crutches, but my coordination is so bad, I get scared I will fall. Hi there. I have a hairline fracture, exterior of my left ankle, happened on June 22. I have a tall boot and here's my issue. I just turned 70, and last September had a full right knee replacement. I was doing super well until the ankle roll/fracture. Wearing the boot has been a disaster for my new knee and the rest of my body, mostly because of the ridiculous difference in leg length when wearing the boot. So on my right foot I soon started wearing a thick-soled, substantial runner with a good thick insole, which has made a huge difference, obviously, but damage has already been done and my new knee has been set back I think several months. So I've chosen to go the rest route 90% of my time and can only hope my knee will recover down the road. I brought this up because it wasn't mentioned specifically in your video and could be of help to others. Thanks for your video, lots of useful info.

Broke my ankle and lower tibia when I rolled my ankle. Surgery with pins screws and plate. Got MRSA infection from surgery. Second surgery to clean out infection and hardware was removed because my bones had healed. Found I now lost cartilage in my ankle due to infection. Was on antibiotics for 3 months. Went back for follow up and more X-rays. Told me my ankle collapsed and now I’m having a third surgery Jan 24th and have to have ankle fusion. Because my ankle collapsed I’m no longer a candidate for ankle replacement as was told six weeks before my ankle collapsed. Was told I could get ankle replacement after a year of ankle fusion surgery. Also hate that my surgeon is not one to prescribe pain meds when I run out. I understand they are habit forming but constant pain really sucks. I haven’t been able to walk for 6 months and won’t be able to walk for 2 or 3 months after fusion surgery. Hopefully fusion surgery will work and I won’t need replacement surgery but if my gait is off and other parts of me are hurting I will get replacement surgery. I’m 54 and was very active 6 months ago. Not looking forward to getting sliced open again and definitely worried about infection again. If you think your wounds are infected go to your surgeon and make them culture infection. My surgeon prescribed me the wrong antibiotics over the phone for 31/2 weeks and wasn’t put on MRSA fighting antibiotics until after second surgery. Maybe my cartilage could of been saved if they would of cultured my infection earlier. I constantly sent pics and complaints about my surgical sites and asked if this looks infected but was never asked to come in . Only after I developed an abscess at surgical site and 2 days later had second surgery. Forget mychart go in and get a culture.

Fell down stairs, just three steps to ground ( carrying blind dog, no hand on handrail). My emergency room orthopedic surgeon saw my x-rays of my spiral fracture on my fibula ( ankle ). He said I can choose not have surgery and I would be okay. Just would involve several months of cast/boot till the bones heal.
I sought out a second opinion, in my lousy insurance network. My in-network surgeon recommended to put four little screws and one big screw for my spiral fracture on my distal fibula ( ankle ). The instructions were to have no weight bearing for 3 months. At the 3 month mark, surgery was to be scheduled to remove the long screw that stabilized & attached the tibula & fibula. I would start Physical Therapy as soon as the screw was removed.
Unfortunately, due to staffing problems at my , in-network, hospital, the surgery to remove the screw has been cancelled twice in 17 days.
The surgeon stated that the hospital did not have sufficient staff for the procedure.
I promptly sought out the opinion of another surgeon, in my lousy insurance network, and brought my x-rays ( per HIPPA, X-rays & archives belong to the patient ).
My new surgeon stated that the long screw did not have to come out, unless it had problems. I asked , "what happens if my 250 LBS breaks that long screw?"
The third surgeon said , " it's the same as removing it but without the additional 6 weeks in a knee high boot."
Three different Bone surgeons told me three different things.
Is that the nature of the science, or is the second doctor milking me & my lousy insurance for two surgeries?

My tip personally is get a band and work your quads your bone will heal faster then your muscle atrophy. So even if you can handle weight bearing at some point your muscles won’t help you they will hurt you more

The shock never kicked in when I got up I knew what happened when my ankle was hanging to the side. I have never been in so much pain in my life, ended up breaking 3 bones in my ankle got 9 screws and 1' plate as the bone fractured a bit higher than normal. Currently I'm 3 months into recovery and as of today I'm allowed to start putting full weight on with the air cast. I hope everyone a safe recovery, you got this.

I was dancing with my daughter and tried to click my heels in the air. I put my hand out for support on the back of a chair and the chair just gave way. Say hello to a left calcaneal fracture. And welcome to the stage a short aircast. Love this channel it's been so helpful.

Been nearly a year since I broke both of my ankles. Talus, tib and calcaneus fractures. Standing/walking for multiple hours at work and they still KILL me

@@Capreeca about 3/4 months ago I had another surgery to remove the hardware and have arthroscopy done to remove arthritis buildup. That has helped a bit but I do still suffer from subtalar arthritis and after standing/walking for 5+ hours my subtalar joint becomes very swollen and rolling my ankle in or out is extremely painful. It's not any of the bones that got damaged and hurt me. It's the damage Ive done to my joints and it's awful. Weird thing is that xrays and CT scans show I still have good joint space for my talus and subtalar joint so I still don't understand why I have arthritis in my joints from the injury

I'm in India where medical costs are comparatively lesser than the U.S. However my insurance doesn't cover this injury and all of my expenses are out of pocket. You, kind sir have helped me so much with this video. Thank you!
