My dad said he recently read an article in which Mel Brooks said that one actor cost him a ton of money. Rick Moranis. He said he had to constantly be yelling cut on the filming because Rick was making everyone laughing so much. But he also said he was the biggest culprit for laughing so much.

Moranis claimed in a 2013 interview that he and Brooks had discussed a potential sequel, with Moranis pitching the title Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II. However, he and Brooks were unable to structure a deal that would allow the project to move forward. In February 2015, Brooks said that he would like to make a sequel to be released after the next Star Wars film and hoped that Moranis would reprise his role. This proposed film, Brooks said, may be called Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money. However, in February 2020, Bill Pullman said during an interview with Daily Blast Live, "It's up to Mel. Ask him if he has too much money and that's why he doesn't do it."

For this event, I set up a physical "Mr. Rental" panel and had all the Mel Brooks VHS tapes lined up like you see it in the film! To this day, I still own all those VHS tapes! I remember the scene as the Colonel Sanders character (played by actor George Wyner) asks the Corporal to get him the Video Cassette of Spaceballs, The Movie! Once upon a time I worked for Decipher Games. We had good relations with Lucasfilm due to our Star Wars CCG. Fans had been asking about making a Space Balls CCG, but we knew Lucas' stance on SB merchandising. But one day we took a shot at it and got an OK from George Lucas. After we picked our jaws up off the floor, we turned around and asked Mel Brooks. He said OK. So for one brief shining moment, it looked like Space Balls the Customizable Card Game was going to actually happen. But when we asked Brooks' people for resources, they didn't have anything to give us. No imagery, designs, nothing. Back then with digital encoding getting quality screen caps off of DVD wasn't possible. With heavy hearts we gave up on it. Decipher ultimately failed as a business, and we never had another go at it. I personally thought it could be done, but it didn't happen.

The version I watched way too many times as a kid was a VHS home-recorded from a TV broadcast. It wasn't until far into adulthood that I watched a proper copy and realized how heavily edited for content and dubbed for "PG" language it was. So I used to quote all these scenes as I remembered them, often receiving "What the hell are you talking about" reactions.
    For example:
    "Private Moron, sir."
    "He's a Moron too, sir."
"How many Morons we got in here?"
    "Yo!"
    "I'm surrounded by Morons!"
Never knew it was actually "Private A**hole" until I was in my twenties. I had no idea about the book, but I imagine the TV edit was similar. The Eighties and Nineties were quite a time to be alive.
    Great video, dude!

In the Blu-Ray release Mel Brooks said that his inspiration for Spaceballs was when he was trying to come up with a title he kept thinking/saying space over and over, trying to think of what would go good with it, and someone yelled out, "Balls!" because they were upset about something completely unrelated.

He helped create a kid's magazine called BANANAS distributed through Scholastic in the 1970's and 1980's wrote a bunch of kids books well. Here in America, even before Goosebumps or Fear Street, Stine was still a huge part of the book fairs that would permeate elementary and middle school libraries .. to promote literacy. I still have a few Jovial Bob Stine books in my collection from when I was young, as I was too old by the time the GB series came out.

The jokes come in a wave like fashion.
    Chuckle chuckle laughter
    Chuckle chuckle laughter
    Chuckle Chuckle LUDICROUS SPEED GO!
And then it goes to storyline to give the audience a few minutes to relax.
No joke is objectively funnier than another but a million moments to reference the movie.
The main jokes like Ludicrous speed, the combing the Desert and the Schwartz fight are easily some of the most iconic comedic moments of the time… and few have come since to last the test of time.

Of course, I knew who most of the actors were, but Candy stood out above them all. If he hadn't played it so well, I honestly think that the rest of the movie wouldn't have come across so well.

When dark helmet says "there's only one man who would dare give me the raspberry. . ."
"giving the raspberry" is slang for sticking your tongue out at someone and blowing to make a sound and bits of spittle fly out.

As a grade school kid, I only got to see Spaceballs commercials on TV, and never got to see it in the theater. I don't remember why - I believe because my parents said I was "too young". Back then, it took a very long time after the movie exited the theater to arrive in movie rental shops. Sometimes 6 months to 2 years. Spaceballs, unfortunately, was one of those that took a long time to hit the VHS rental market. I wanted to see it so bad, but the only option was that I saw the novelization in the Scholastic book club order sheets we used to get in school. I distinctly recall ordering Spaceballs: The Book, along with the novelization of Adventures in Babysitting. I don't think I ever actually read the second book, as for me it was pretty much just filler to get the Spaceballs novelization. I read that book at least two or three times, before the movie ever became available to rent. And yea I was quite surprised that idiots became a**holes, among other slight differences. I do recall the book had two instances of a swear word substitution - the word was something along the lines of "fur-sch-lug-in-ger". I likely don't have the spelling quite right, but I really do believe the novelization was really targeted at the younger pre-teen market that was too young to see the movie, but was nevertheless excited by the commercials and marketing. I always believed the differences were just improvised by Jovial Bob, but perhaps not?
