The saddest thing is that we can never see a movie like this again. Since Disney is so protective of popular assets. Spaceballs truly is starwars's father's brothers cousins nephews former roommate

Actually the reason why we don't get movies like this anymore Is because most parody master like mel brooks and the zucker brothers Made a shit Ton of forgotten parodies that bombed so hard at the box office in the 90, and then after the succes of scary movie in the late 2000 now every parody should look and sound exactly like scary movie despite how un funny and morronic those parodies are, hell the same people who Made epic movie and the starving games want to do a star wars parody

Parodies are explicitly protected by law. The real reason is most parodies bomb so there are few who will take risks making them.

Thank you for the correction. In a sense yes for improvements, but no for the origin. So I did research into that because I was curious as well.
Air conditioning prototype gen was not invented by Carrier until 2 years prior to the New York Metro and a decade or two after real electricity. That predated Spaceballs film by 80+ years and even predated Mel Brooks. up until that day people like my ancestors would expertly carve ice out of local lakes and haul back for refrigeration of goods. So the probability of a 80 year later movie contributing to amenities such as conditioned air is hyper low.
It COULD however be enough to reality check a theatre or other public entity into the effectiveness of its' ventilation and air distribution and conditioning systems.
But since it was brought up I will say this. As electricity grew so did mass transit and HVACR and air handling systems.
I believe they used booster compressors for air back as early as Comstock Silver Strike, but that gen was mechanical innovation not electrical and my memories are a little fuzzy on that timeline since it has been a bit since I was studying the history of the sierra nevadas.
There are reactive laws and proactive laws.
The first US building codes I know of started as reactive measure a result of a tragedy. Fire.
The Great Chicago Fire was the prime point of municipalities in the United States establishing fair and equitable building codes to preserve and protect life and property. Fire happened 1871. Code was made that very decade.
When your business district goes up in flames and you lost hundreds of people and over 10,000 buildings you KNOW something is going to change. And it did.Other cities followed.
New York lead the way for electric codes: 1881. Cali led the way with plumbing codes: 1928.
As electricity was harnessed and applied on the municipal scale the NEC was gradually formed. I have no clue about HVACR design codes but assume that the curve was stable and improvements were made proportional to technologies available.
In 1970 the Williams-Steiner act was signed and that drastically inpacted the course of history. EPA was that year too.
Lead was recognized as a priority 1 respiratory target and sunsetted in fuel. Banned for use in paint '76. Radon asbesdos formaldehyde and other stuff have been found as not exactly the best for us. For everything there is a purpose but it's good to try stick to building intelligently.
With the advent of proactive engineering measures building codes have changed several times since then.
Hyatt Regency Disaster was one sad one.
Backflow preventer and check valves, electronic control systems, lightning ATSS's advancing grounding and bonding theory, ground fault and arc fault protection systems. Emerging technologies in heat and smoke and fire and stimuli detection. variable frequency drives optics and improved alloys and the list goes on. LEED green building principles which though related to many of the above are not technically code, can be a requirement of the specifications section of proposed construction and therefore are a correlary for consideration in the design element of buildings.
With passive natural ventilation systems like open decks louvred windows and connective breezeways the air freely flows in and out of the building with the wind. The outside air cycles and CO² and pathogens simply go outside and get roasted by the sun. Roughly 30 minutes of bright sun and UV cleans it.
but in big sealed buildings tunnels,etc...where people are actively walking laughing and concentrated...Prime example: gym working out--having that extra boost of air helps, the CO² does not readily cycle (only with opening and closing of doors and what not, hence theatres run hvac.
The most extreme iteration of the application of personnel, air electric and plumbing control is in a Level IV Biosafety laboratory. I will leave that at that.
The first subways were late 1800s and likely their gen 1 underground mass transit tunnels incorporated air handling, so if I was going to put a dot on the map as to the probable first reason air handling systems were needed it would be the gold silver and copper rush of the mid 1800s followed by the subways and then post WWI building code.
In the 1980s it ramped up and a lot of innovations came out of Japan.
All the systems can be designed to work together; fire supression systems can now be programmed to automatically close servo vents in new buildings if smoke or fire is detected... a good designed system accounts for everything before it happens. That is the job of the engineer. IN principle sealed commercial buildings benefit from not just conditioning systems with recircs but also actual filtration.
Even as covid prompted systems to be retrofitted with UV boosters so did codes prompt buildings' designers to consider worker health including carbon dioxide sequestrization and mitigation.
Some buildings can actually be rated for internal combustion engine vehicle access if their Ventilation systems are strong enough. Really really cool.
In a nutshell, if someone doesn't have an open window you likely have an HVAC system to circulate air.
if you don't have an HVAC system your office should consider the immediate and long term benefits of doing it the natural way:
      PLANTS.
I doubt this film was the reason why certain building codes changed and updated, but the principle remains: if lots of people are together laughing there is more carbondioxide produced. If you want to know about carbon dioxide to air ratio going bad just watch the movie Apollo 13.
Cleaner air benefits all, but there needs to be a happy medium between practical and excessive.
inside structural health can be increased several ways. Building well the first time. that means reducing pressboard and glue lam'd wood to a minimum (it offgasses) avoiding toxic plastics and wiring like those coming from certain sources in the east. Basically they use powders and greases which are really really bad.
If it says NSF51 or 61 it is good.
If it says Plenum rated it is good.
same for ISO 9001 and up.
if it smells bad, feels "off" in terms of texture, it might be good to quietly ask more information about the product and consult a professional friend or two to see if improvements can be made.
Japan US Mexico Canada and European processing all use cleaner higher standard processes even if that plastic and metal is recycled. #1 and 2 plastics are usually good. US ABS is fine but ABS coming out of china and SE Asia is contaminated. I feel it when I touch it. The grease. It's something in their mold and extruder ejection systems. Grease and anticaking power is all wrong. US mexico canada produces more high quality wires which offgas less.
so if one reduces the amount of compromising air coming off of the structures themselves they can increase health benefits of the air and water inside of the building.
if the baseline air is cleaner, when people actually fill the building and start adding CO² to the mix it will be cleaner longer.

Air quality can be improved by planning planting and processing.
Plan well before building or renovating. Incorporating plants where appropriate. A note: people get allergies when they are not exposed to stuff and so I advocate parents do excursions to parks and natural places where pollen immunities can be built up. A wise man also once told me that eating honey made by local bees helps too. Not making a claim about the accuracy of the statement, but I will say that honey has antibacterial properties and heals. My allergies are hella next to zero so even if I do eat honey from a different locale, I have eaten it all my life and so it is what it is. Back on track. Air quality can be processed and improved via passive and active means. Passive is like positioning the building north south east west so the natural winds flow instead of parallel or perpendicular to the street... or if you live in a high latitude, high wind or currently-high-pollution area taking into account those things and building accordingly. Location. Location. Location. If location is bad now it can be improved. Even inner cities are planting gardens and watching it transform the areas.
Designs can also incorporate other measures like if a water feature is nearby you can throw a filter on it and now your fountain becomes an looping liquid air filter. landscaping sprinkler systems outside are a 1 way air handler bringing spores and particles to earth. they clean somewhat and humidify as secondary and tertiary effects to watering.
Plants. Not all plant species are alike. some purify air more than others. Some purify water more. Others generate more oxygen than others. A large tree will pull more weight than many small ones. When large trees crack CO² and release O² it is my belief that it also reduces and stabilizes ambient temperatures. Shade, stability and wayyy higher oxygen.
Hence, plants applied indoors can have a soothing stabilizing effect which in lower traffic areas goes beyond brute force forced air systems. Volume air handling is better for high volume areas. It is possible to have more pleasant commercial space via the wise application of plants and water features, so long as people are not lazy or stupid and use trash cans and keep the place clean.
Then we get into fung shui. five elements. There must be balance between them
If an area has a lot of wood or water elements there is wisdom in having fire elements. In an alpine forest a cabin with a fireplace is warmer than a cabin without one.
Fung shui is also expanding into the impacts of RFI. If someone is running a system with say high transients or noisy bad ballasts or low quality bulbs the subtleties of that system will transfer to the surrounding air and ground.
people will feel all of the above and it will impact mood, health, and social interactions.
When I am in recycled air for long periods of time or really poor quality air for short periods of time I feel it.
sometimes there is too much wood or water in your environment. In that case incense and warmth helps. check with local codes to see what is allowed.
Healthy is happy. Laughing helps health but when lots of people are laughing there should be clean air. Carbon sequesterization is real. off gassing and injection into domestic supply chains of compromising products (including packaging materials they come with) is real. Societal balance is off. we are in emissions debt and big companies buying land to offset carbon footprints does NOTHING to reduce the oxygen generating entities which are forests being slash and burned. So oil and tech companies own lands to "offset" or net zero their servers and building's carbon footprints. Great! that does nothing other than slow the entropy for the power emissions though. They gotta plant trees.
back to the beginning. With the gold and silver rushes of the mid 1800s came the deforestation of the mountains. They had to use the wood for shafts, railways, fuel, housing, and equipment. To my knowledge those mountains in 150 years have not recovered.
south america and SE Asia deforested a lot of important forests which were offsetting gasses in our atmosphere.
when more pollution is added to the atmosphere solar radiation hits that and temps fluctuate harder affecting Plants stabilize the atmosphere as well as ambient temperatures.
Instead of going into the ice age we were overdue for we are now in heat waves and junk, thinking we can comb the desert our own way to find the answer.
The planet will self correct if we are not careful.
Plant beneficial trees. Grow healthy shrubs. Manually weed, don't spray herbicides. Avoid invasive species, research native species first.
A pound of prevention is worth 16 pounds of cure. Moringa Oleifera tree is one example of a disproportionately beneficial plant if local climate will not freeze it. Purifies polluted water. aids in lactation for girls who are having difficulty nursing. superfood.
Paradoxically the best way we stabilize the climate is the very species we are back-burnering.
HVAC systems and movie theatres have a purpose, even as plants do. Through achieving balance in our homes and businesses the quality of life of our familes, pets and neighborhoods will improve.
And that is how the cookie crumbles.
sorry if topic is jumbly I def typed this up on a mobile.

Dark Helmet: So the combination is one, two, three, four, five. That's the stupidest combination I ever heard in my life. That's the kind of thing an idiot would have on his luggage.
    (Several minutes later)
    President Skroob: What's the combination?
Colonel Sandurz: One, two, three, four, five.
President Skroob: One, two, three, four, five?
    Colonel Sandurz: Yes.
President Skroob: That's amazing. I got the same combination on my luggage.
