I got a minor for going wide on figure of 8. I wasn't too wide tbh but used the yellow cone. Examiner said one foot wider and he would have failed me. He said that this is a test of slow speed steering so going a bit wide means you are not in control and letting the bike lead you.
Interesting. And wholly inconsistent. Particularly as there's no radius restriction on the opposite side of the figure of eight as there's no yellow cone there. Appreciate the feedback, thanks Muhammad. 👍
@@Lets-rideUk This was Erith test centre. My instructor had advised me to stay within blue and yellow but if I felt I was not in control then okay to go beyond. He did mention that the test centre can sometimes take it that you are not in control.I watched all your videos and other advise and decided to go beyond yellow cone but not more than a foot (because I was struggling a little only on this exercise for some reason). The examiner was friendly and gave feedback to my instructor as well and told me that in the beginning he mentioned that this is a test of steering in low speed so making large circles was showing me that bike was leading you and not the other way. Hi Richard. I just wanted to say thank you for all the effort you’ve gone to with these videos. They were a big help to me in preparing for my MOD 1 today… and I passed with no minors! 😊👍🏻 Thank you!
There is absolutely no doubt that I passed because of this video (having previously failed by putting my foot down in the slalom). Before beginning it I checked with the examiner regarding the blue and yellow being different parts and it took quiet some pushing to get him to say that I could go around the yellow during the 8 if necessary. As it happened I was able to get the 850 around without doing so but I would put it out there to people; do ask your examiner about any element that you are unsure on BEFORE you start that part of the test. Thank you Rich for making this.

Had to learn how to shift and all, myself in the yard, parking lots and the street. Can’t tell you how many times I went into corners too fast and left the road. Good thing I was 16 and was immortal. My 5 years of mini biking skills helped.
This was a simple exercise for the other people in my training group but it took me 3 Attempts get around that bloody slalom! Thanks to you and the instructors at Let's Ride for being so patient with me and getting me through it (I've gone to a car park & checked my slalom a couple of times in the 2 years since then, walk in the park 😊). Great videos, great training school.

Unlike some people I fortunately have it easy on the slalom and figure of 8. When it comes to figure of 8,when I did my CBT was said to make no small nor too wide similar to the video range, always balance being in the middle. As some people've said they getting minors on the 8 doing that way. If theyve passed thats all that matters.Really enjoying those videos, chill person, friendly.
Useful info for any rider planning to do the Module 1 test in Mallusk, Belfast, Northern Ireland. The course is set up very differently to what you see on UA-cam. Be prepared for a much tighter uturn and a much tighter figure of 8. Also, unlike in England, when you do the figure of 8 you cannot go around the last yellow cone.
Those nice and wide figure eights are great, but here in the states it's done inside a box- 60*20 I believe. Getting ready for my test here and looking for all the tips I can find. Very informative all the same. Thanks 👍
I failed my first mod 1 on the figure the of 8. I was too slow and my turns where too tight, a nice big heavy foot down. Second attempt tomorrow. Video help me a lot. Cheers
The figure 8 is the only part of the test that I really don't feel comfortable with. I do wonder whether it's because of the physical restrictions of the car park my instructors use. They also place a white cone after the final blue to restrict going beyond that point but in this video it looks like you take it quite a bit wider. Are there generally restrictions on how far past the 2nd blue cone you can go? Great content by the way!
There's no official guidance given to trainers on circle radius - we learn by watching tests and what feedback is given to pupils after the test. We've not had anyone ever fail for going too wide on the figure of eight but obviously don't take the p***! 😆 We know that some examiners can get a little twitchy about going around the 2nd yellow cone so use that as guidance for your radius - but don't make it unnecessarily hard. 👍

Hi. What experience or knowledge do you have of folks taking the test on an all electric bike? There is no clutch and the throttle tends to be very sensitive. Can you actually take a test on an all electric bike ? I realsie that some of the techy questions would be irrelevant. Thanks
Hi Sylvia. We've no direct experience with electric bikes but the category of licence it will be eligible for will be dependent on power output, evidence of which will need to be supplied to the examiner on each test. Where are riders supposed to keep their eyes and head in the slalom exercise Richard? I’ve read and heard different people say different things. If there is a trick here, I’m interested to hear it.
The slalom is simply focusing on the cone directly in front of you and not hitting it. The figure of eight is lots of head movement to keep the blue cone in sight.
