Update: today (after 6 months or so the seat clamp snapped in half. Luckily it was on the indoor trainer 😂
But there you go.... no what to get instead ... daaarri...
speaking of daaaarri...could you maybe do a long term review on that wonderful seat post? im in the market for one with the dyneema clamp system :)
Yesss please, are you still happy with the seatpost ?
Bro, your production value is through the roof as always👏🤙
Update: *Discount is over but you can still find some nice deals*
My good Swedish friends at Void Cycling is offering a 20% discount to my viewers until Christmas Eve (24/12 23:59 CET). Just put the discount code "RoJ20" at checkout to pick up some nice last minute Christmas gifts to yourself ;)

Hello, any ideas on a good source for Wako's brake protector? Thanks
Well i just went ham on void's website.....sniped things already discounted heavily so you saved me all of 12 bucks but hey... free shipping. Merry Christmas! I'll have to get back to you on how many $/g on my poor wallet though...
Awesome discount on stuff already bundled. Thank you and Happy Christmas ❄️
Your intros are amazing with those visual effects, music, and glamour shots of the bike parts.
It’s Bike Porn! 😍
YEAH, new seat post!! The saddle, post, and new clamp combination are gorgeous, congratulation to you and your UP. Your thoroughness and attention to detail separate you from the herd and keep me coming back for more tidbits. Being genuine helps us by allowing us to learn from your mistakes and being entertained as well.
I really enjoy to quality and content of your video, you're in my top 3 bike vlog!
Thank you for doing them!
Marc-André Couture cheers! 🙏
And thanks for watching!
I keep coming back to re-watch this one. The content is great but the editing and music is next level! Thanks for making great stuff!
🙏
Bro your edit is hot AF. Most people would do this video just talking to the camera maybe a few shots of the scales, etc. Throw it together in Premiere and the whole thing would be done in 2hrs. I guesstimate you spent around 10-12hrs filming this, editing it, etc. Keep it up bro. Amazing.
China Cycling cheers mate!
12h is probably not enough 😅 but as long as it’s fun it’s all good.
Wish I had more time to do it though.
Offcourse!! Never forget to take a scale on those climbs.
I saved 500g by just riding naked as the day I was born with only my shoes on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Nighthawk_Steel whatever it takes 👍
No shoes and save several hundred more
@@Jeff-bd4gg already tried this, but the gains don't really justify the loss in power because of uncomfort 😬
I had clips surgically installed into the soles of my feet.
I saved 56kg by putting my cat in my place
This guy living my dream. Wife ruins my weightweenie dreams. Ditching her would save me about 60 kg and it sounds very appealing!
😂
daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn
You'd only have 1/4 of your bike after the divorce. Lot of weight shaved off that's for sure
haha I HATE MY WIFE
A wife is not aero either
Thanks, and by the way, I recieved a ship notice on my tsprings order. I may order another once I see the fabric, I like a heavier weight T. Keep up the great videos.
Read the instructions before buying: YES!! An example would be if the frame says a seat clamp needs to be torqued to 4-6nm but the seat clamp and/or seatpost specifies a max of 3nm. That is an incompatibility right there.
I'm really happy with the trend weight weenie gear is going to lately, offering more aerodynamic options such as the hyperstem mounts. A lot of older tech was either aerodynamic and heavy, or lightweight and less aero. I certainly hope it continues this direction.
IMHO The best video editing of any bike channel, always a joy to watch your videos
Glad to here you’re enjoying them 🙏
Last comment from me, I am following much of your advice and have bought several of the same components that you have. The easton EC90SL cranks and chain ring, KMC gold chain, Hope rotors (blue). Spent $1500CAD more on my bike this fall in carbon upgrads and how now replaced everything on my bike except for the frame, fork and shifters... The sad part is I am a weight weinnie with all carbon components but still on my custom steel frame... Size 60 frame comes in at 9.36kg.... its a losing battle, but its fun to geek out.
You could put some Aero bar tape on the saddle, i did on my selle italia slr and it worked out very good
I put frame wrap on my carbon seat.. piece of mind
I couldn't care less about how much a bike component weight. I'm just a humble commuter cyclist with a humble secondhand entry level mtb. At first I'm interested with the word "Japan" in your channel name but now I just love how you do your vids, man.
I appreciate that mate!
And don’t ever start caring about bike part weights... it’s not a good avenue to go down 😅
Cheers!
@@ridesofjapan I've seen how deep the rabbit hole goes from the videos that you made and I'm not willing to take that elevator down. lol
Stay safe and cheers, man.
Maybe a stick on grip material like the type used for firearm pistol grips would help on that saddle and add essentially no weight.
Could also use some fine grit skateboard deck tape, I’m going to try some wet and dry and try stick to saddle.
Dude! Your videos are getting better and better !!! Such a awesome edit
Thank you for the great saddle recommendation! I picked up the padded Berk Lupina based on your comments about it (debated the glossy unpadded version but you saying you still found the padded more comfortable convinced me). Just had a nice ride and it was really comfortable. Weight savings were substantial over my stock saddle but considering my rig, not significant overall. Comfort is more important to me right now until I get my butt into riding shape.
Happy you like it 👍
It looks like fun building a cost-no-object weight weenie project but you know what is also really fun? Building one on a tight budget. I'm putting together a hillclimb bike with all used or cheap no-brand new parts. Really enjoying the process so far.
The out front mount 👌🏼 is perfect!
Have you weighed your scale yet? definitely adds some serious grams to the ride;)
Even though i think wheigt weenis should seek professional help, you're still my fav bike channel
Paul H but imagine how many grams one could save for the money it would cost getting professional help 🤔
Cheers mate! 🙏
I find your videos very informative entertaining and calming, this episode is absolutely amazing. Thanks for uploading 🙏🏼
Sir, I'm addicted on your channel, keep it up the work 👍🏻👌🏻
Dear Tobias, I discoverd your channel couple of month ago (just amazing content ! by the way) but since then ... well I deam you responsible for creating needs !!! It all started with the great Fairmean bike bag... then my wife got me a Berk Lupina for Christmas .... and now I just ordered a SL7 Darimo seatpost... Please dear please... HELP ! your content is too good !
My deepest apologies mate! 😅
Cheers!
I love your editing style. Keep up the good work.
Kelly Mckenzie 🙏🙏
3rd time watching this video and the beginning still makes me chuckle. "Not too shabby for a gravel bike....but......" 🤣
:-) That was so nice again. I often have these hearts in front of my eyes when I made it back home with my bike and look down on it on my last meters. At home I say to myself or to the bike (I am not really sure to whom i speak) : Well done! .... the lighter or better parts are always something, I know my bike appreciates and it rewards me with fantastic experiences and reliability.... One thing i regret and took away from my reliable companion was the carbon saddle. After hours on rough stuff i sometimes felt some sharp pain. Not in my butt! :-/ In my bones, like a disc prolapse coming soon :-D . Back to the actual topic: I am looking forward to hear something about your feelings on the saddle. I know, Japan is well paved, maybe that helps with the carbonsaddle. Viele Grüße aus Norddeutschland!
switching to 6 bolt with a BIKE AHEAD adapter and riding ashima rotors would save you pretty significant weight
Love this video ! I know you don’t ride rim brakes now, but I could use some solid advice on lightweight skewers for my new road wheels.
Sorry, haven’t run rimbrakes/qr for years.. I had mix results with lightweight skewers. Had a pair of kcnc that was okay, but nothing like a good old pair Shimano DA’s
Thank you for sharing - kind of glad that you buy that expensive stuff and let us enjoy it with you :D
R2-bike is the best shop for weight weenies - where else can you sort by weight?
Oh and are you sure you don't want to rotate the seat clamp 180°? With my tune Würger and other seat clamps it was always recommended to have the slit of the seattube on the same side as the slit in the clamp.
KoenigKalle cheers mate, I agree r2bike is definitely taking advantage of our weakness ;)
About the seatpost clamp, yeah I thought about it but I figured I would put it the same way as the original clamp at it will protect the bolt from tire spray as well.. will see how it holds up, since it’s not crazy expensive even if it breaks it’s not the end of the world, from another comment it seems to be quite fragile piece of kit.
Torvig mate. You never said your arse fell off during that last geological survey you did with your face. You could have told us, we’d happily get behind ( oh look a pun ) any fundraising activities for your glutoplastioptamie. Don’t hide your shame, it’s time for us all to stand up, but mostly you because it must really hurt to sit down. Stay strong, keep up the weight obsessing and make more videos.
CF O'Sullivan 😂🤙
Rides of Japan love your videos 🤗
The lightweight saddle can carry around 120 kg moving and hopping around, I’m pretty sure it can handle 7 kg on the opposite direction.
I had the same seat clamp. A bargain for the weight but after some time it will probably crack... mine cracked over night. Recognized it as I was trying to lift it by the saddle.
Philipp Straube thanks for the heads up, will keep a close eye on it!
Philipp Straube thanks for the heads up, will keep a close eye on it!
@@ridesofjapan my guess was it was caused by temperature change over a winter's night... the aluminium shrinked more than the carbon post I guess.
This makes me feel better about ordering the service SL 80 bars rather than the service course 80. $50 more dollars for 50g.
Easily worth it! ✊
I have those bars. You won't regret it!
Yea I want that same route with the SL
Went*
Bargain!
Why don't you cut the fork steerer tube ? Are you still fiddling with position ? Or do you change your position depending on the type of ride you're going on ?
Michel Giroux-Burroughs correct, I often raise my stem when I’m bike packing, mostly to get some extra tire clearance.
Funny how those shoppig carts seem to fill up more than anticipated.
It's like going into a grocery store for a Coke. You'll still end up buying all the sweets at the children corner..
Can you elaborate on how you broke the previous saddle? Always nice to know what NOT to do.
Your cost per gram saved really shows diminishing returns in action!! Great stuff, love your content!
Have to say for Garmin attachment that comes with the Easton ea90sl is perfect and easy to adjust the angle, my 110 length, weighs in at 112g with it’s ti bolts.
Checked here as my aim on aero bike with dropper seatpost is 6.76kg but normal seatpost be 6.37kg and that is me going disc and electric and not really aiming for light weight but aero and durable, 38mm front 50mm rear for rims but tubular 22mm front and 25mm rear and might off-road a bit in future (22mm as aero on 23mm wide rims), trek Emonda alr might start off with at 7.14kg, swap frame later
Good video, as usual. Not using the Fidlock bottle anymore? I just ordered one so wondering if there is a reason you're not using it.
I still use the fidlock when I use a framebag.
It’s still heavier than a normal cage/bottle setup though. I also prefer having the squeeze valves on my bottles which the fidlock doesn’t have.
Do you have a long-ish torso? I thought Open frames were designed for zero-setback posts.
Thanks for the recommendation on the Berk saddle. Love it.
Mark Chauvin Bezinque Pretty ”normal” torso, but I have longish femurs.
Cheers!
His bike stand is a weight scale! :) Nice video as always!
Damn, I got the weight weenie virus because of you :-) Just bought a new Farsport wheel set and a pair of crankbrother eggbeater pedals (Ti nr 11).
You just violated UCI rules with that weight for a gravel bike!! .... Just kidding, no rules for this...yet. Nice video, as always. Take care mate.
It never stops! Thanks for the void hookup
I love your work. The videos are great.
Apologies if this has already been mentioned in the comments, but as beautiful as the saddle is, it's a porker compared to the new Gelu K-3 which weighs in at 38g! Time to go shopping again?
Itsa Secret cheers mate!
I’m getting (already got) another padded Berk, so I’m adding more weigh 🤪
Weight is secondary to comfort in this case, and after years and years of trying saddles I finally found a saddle I can ride 250km and not cry in pain... it just happen to be one of the light ones, massive bonus as mentioned.
Saddles are the most personal part of the bike though, for some people the Gelu might fit as good as the Berk fit me, they can count themselves lucky ;)
You have become the Colin Chapman of cycling. "A Lotus in Japan". Perhaps flocking the slick new saddle will get you the butt purchase you seek!!
rest ur bike against the rear wheel, not the shiny saddle... and prehaps, a lighter computer? or pedal?
FWIW, I put a bit of heat shrink on my scale's hook for safety. Wouldn't want to accidentally scratch all that carbon :).
Andrew Van Til good idea!
Looking for a bigger hook as well.
@@ridesofjapan I use a bit of thin, but very strong rope in a loop for things that don't fit on the hook. Works perfectly.
Andrew Van Til yeah, I use a rubber coated wire (seen in the opening of the video) a bit long to bring out on rides though ;)
And I'm excited that my CXC weights 11.7 kg with a carbon groupset.
Steel or Titanium CXC?
@@simo782b steel!
The yuniper clamp is beautifully made and even has a titanium bolt, i had one too until it broke while going downhill. So just don't overtorque it!
P.S. my yuniper seatpost clamp is being used as a key ring pendant now😂
If I was you, I would have looked to the Gelu saddles and seat tube! 😉
I have 2 friends with Gelu and 2 broken Gelus. Ive had 3 Berks and all 3 are fantastic with one even surviving a crash (just scuffed). I have the Darimo T1 seatpost and its amazing. The Dyneema seems to actually hold better and safer than standard clamp system. Its a pain to set it up though.
I thought seat clamps bolts are supposed to be to the rear.
Honestly, breaking during warranty isn't too bad, I always break most parts just a few months after the warranty expired (Like my Fizik Aliante R3 Versus Evo)
Maybe you could add some sandpaper grip tape or even just some masking tape (comes in blue to match the bike) to the carbon saddle to help with slipperiness. I'm not sure what material is best, but it's worth experimenting with, I think.
RoJ: "I was just after a new Seatpost, but..."
Me: "That's how it starts." 😉
The Yuniper seat clamp is nice and while I had one on my bike, it snapped after 1,000km. I had to de 16km standing to get home.
I think I torqued it to 5nm not 3nm so that could be the reason for the failure. The spec on the clamp was so small, I thought it was a 5 not 3nm. Besides, at 3nm, I don’t think it would have held the seat post in place. LOL
LOL I ride a sub 24lb Windsor Wellington 2.0 7speed aluminum frame/steele fork road bike and do pretty well on it. I am looking at purchasing a new bike just because after about 3 seasons on it, i'm pretty much out growing it. Need more gears tbh. Also it's a bit too big for me but i made the proper adjustments to make it work. Another problem is it's hard getting different components for a 7 speed. I like changing thigs up here n there and it's very limited whats available.
It would cost too much to buy rims, shifters/derailleurs cassette/cranks etc etc to upgrade to say 10 or 11 speed so i'm just going for a whole new bike in the propper size. Maybe try selling my other bikes. We shall see.
It's kind of sickening that your gravel bike is lighter than my road bike... I'd be interested to know how much all this bike cost. 😂
Oh and MY Gravel bike is 12kg... and I actually like it like that. It makes me appreciate and stronger on my road bike. 😂
Very very good weight. Love the glossy and blue berk too. I’m using padded berk dila, after trying many saddles but definitely not as many as you haha. Love the dila
Omg I fckn LOVE your edits 😍
Your editing skills are so damn good!
Spends 400 euros on weight savings on the bike. Goes riding "brings scale". haha I love these videos.
why is a 100kg rider watching this? Must be good production cause I have zero need of anything you updated. Good entertainment though, thanks
Same here 😂
tewaewae cheers mate! Much appreciated!
Me too. Even the music is groovy
Same, I weigh 250 lbs. of course I have a Merlin Extralight, too, LOL but I got it for a really good price.
6.755 kg with pedals and bottle cages? (And headset and paint, which some 'weight weenie' calculations sometimes leave out...?)
That's amazingly light, congratulations!
Yep, it actually includes a metal pump holder as well.
ride ready weight is the only acceptable weigh in my book.
Cheers!
Hi, Berk make a short Lupina (custom). It's a touch lighter and IMO looks better.
Congrats, your bike and wallet have gotten trimmer
Have you tried crank brothers egg beater 3 upgraded with a titanium spindle. Should save a few grams compared to shimano and they don't clog with mud and ice like shimano.
Peter Bee no I haven’t, reason being this video ua-cam.com/video/Ivzzx2P7ybI/v-deo.html
im gonna start bringing my scale in my mountain rides again! ever!!
Hey you, what's the model/name of the UNO Stem and how heavy is it? I'm looking for a light stem that's 110 mm and 6 or 7 degrees max. Preferably a 7075 Aluminum... not too expensive.. Thanks Mr Japan
Dick Tchairdjian check the description ;)
Have you heard about berd spokes ? They are dyneema and weight half of what a sapim spoke weighs. I think you could get your wheels sub 1kg with em.
Yeah, I know about them, not ready to jump on that train yet though.
Haha, did I perhaps inspire Rides of Japan stem-wise? :)
Also, I feel this channel is kind of forming into a shopping list for the 3T Strada I plan to build. Aero seat tube=no ultralight seatposts, though.
Darimo does custom seatposts so you are in luck. darimo.eu/en/darimo-t1-loop-seatpost-aero-not-round
How many miles you done on the Carbon Seat so far? Did you get use to the less comfort and the slipperiness after a while? I am considering this saddle.
Thanks for the tip on the Kalloy stem! I have been looking for a budget light stem in a 31.8mm diameter. Trying to squeeze all the weight I can out of a fixed gear bike to get it down to below 9.07 kg. Any suggestion for budget weight weenie bars and saddles? Both my drop bars and saddle are 300 g each. It is just wrong lol.
David Adamus hard to find anything really light AND cheap when it come to bars and saddle. Nothing like the kalloy uno.
Something like a selle italia slr with Ti rails would get you under 200g but still not super cheap though.
Love your video style.
07:39 😂😂😂😂😂, another great video👍👍👍
Oh man, how'd I miss this one.
Watch those two pieces of wood don’t break the seat clamp on that Darimo seat post! ^^
Greatest compromise I saw was calling 101.9g ....
102g.
Do you plan to actually sit on that saddle or did you just buy it for weighing it?
What is lightest saddle to support 120kg? I love solid carbon without padding but want round rails
Have you considered an sp mount that screws in the place of your stem cap with a lightweight bolt and a sticker on the back of your computer?
Nope, I have not... having it mounted on top of the stem is hard enough to see for me
Love your review; thank you. Wondering if you have tried Bjorn Saddles.(you mantises you have tried many); trying to decide between Berk Carbon and Bjorn Carbon; thank you.
I have not, sorry.
Those bolts on your top tube that are just filling in the holes- you could replace with aluminum bolts.
They are aluminum bolts :)
Also have nylon bolts to replace them with eventually.
@@ridesofjapan Toroughly clean the threads those nylon bolts will go in. Like with carbon fiber, there could be some quelling if it gets in contact with grease or not hardened threadlocker. (Q-tips and some heptane will do, or lesser alcohols.)
Are those decals on the post adding weight?....
Matt Taylor don’t give me ideas ;)
You are very much making me want to turn this into a competition. If I showed you the extent and $$ (Yen in your case :) for my sub 5kg Cervelo build you wouldn't feel guilty about all these pieces you are acquiring :) - I might just swap the Cervelo running gear to the Open.... Then I just need some gears and wheels :) Nice work. Love the videos. Come to Australia and ill take you bike packing :) Or I might hit you up next winter for a tour guide in Japan :)
Bike packing or cave maning lol
any particular reason why the seat clamp bolt is on the front side :D?
W.J.G. van Klaveren protect the bolt from tire spray. The original clamp was the same.
But is there a lighter kit than your void stuff? Never tried reducing weight on KIT🤔🤔🤔
Do you have old bike parts u wanna sell to me..?
@RidesOfJapan can you give us a update on the extralite stem. is it stiff enough? does the bar slip ? cheers
Never had a stem that wasn’t stiff enough, so yeah, stiff enough for half anorectic climber like me ;)
No slippage, bit of carbon paste and 3Nm.
* I would not get any WW parts at all if stiffness was the top priority.
Love your videos man 👌👌 what’s bars are those???
Lee Joseph Elliott cheers mate!
T3 superghiaia 40cm
nice video man as always. just a quick tip, your seat clamp is installed the wrong way. the bolt should always be in the area where the relief cut-out is in the tube. you could crack the carbon. careful!
8 grams dude...thats like, a bag of weed in my pocket...lmao
I feel like you could have just took a nice big poop before your ride
and you would have saved all the grams in this entire video for free
So the only thing left really is upgrading from the OPEN UP to the UPPER frameset, right? 😄
fragfarmerCA I wish.... it came in something other than black ;)
It comes in a ready to paint option too! Has me thinking...
Steel rider here! Funny as watchinh the weight weenies doing there thing. My bikes 9.7kg! You could save more weight, do not use bar tape, ride without a saddle or seat post lol.
