    Danny and Joey D.'s album "Relentless" is a superb album that brings out the best in both artists. Many years ago at a gig in Denver, I asked Joey about that album and playing with Danny and he said, "Oh man, that guy..."

      That's one of my "desert island" CDs. Heard Gearheads on local public radio on my way home from work and was astonished. Speaking to no one, I said "Who the hell is this guy?!?!" Amazing.

    You can see how hard he was on himself and deeply seriously he took his music. Thank you for this clip of a truly one of a kind virtuoso at work. ..

    I could literally listen to this forever. Danny was great in so many ways, but the cleverness of his phrasing was my very favorite thing about him. I think this video shows that well.

    These little clams that happen (another at the 9 minute and 25 second mark) seem to me to be an indicator of Danny's discomfort at times in the studio. The lines he flubs would NEVER happen in a live room. Unfortunately a lot of truly brilliant musicians tense up when that red light goes on and sadly this can be a sign of feeling inferior (if you can believe THAT) I can just imagine the thoughts going through the head of the world's greatest guitar player. " damn it what the hell is WRONG with you? You don't DESERVE to be playing with these guys"..and on and on. The perfectionist can never attain happiness and in the end Dan probably couldn't take the pressure of not being able to deliver the kind of performances that HE felt measured up. While the rest of the guitar playing world fell to their knees in stunned awe and praise.

      I have this album/CD and have jammed along with it hours on end. I do not recall this track. I play harmonica, 45 years and was full-time pro at 20. Started in Bluegrass, then Honky-Tonk, had a Swing Dance 7 piece Jazz/Blues band for 10 years too. Just spent 7 years in Austin, now in San Diego. Had albums by both Joey & Danny G. so, this was a great find and many great grooves they play on this one.

    Would like to know "the rest of the story" on this track that didn't make the CD. Being the perfectionist, was it cut live w JD and overdubbing his part to get a better take?

    • @TimmBieryMusic
      @TimmBieryMusic 6 місяців тому

      This track and a few others didn't make the album. There was talk of a follow-up, but that never happened, sadly.
      Danny did overdubs on a few songs from this project, but we all lobbied for the live takes. Joey was heavy into the live takes, as was I. In the attempt to put out the playing Danny liked best, there is at least one tune where they cut between entire takes in mastering, I believe, making for some interesting cymbal changes, to say the least! I mentioned it to Danny when I heard the final masters (I'd been away producing an album for another artist and wasn't there for that stage of the project) and he said, with a big ol' smile on his face "well, you weren't here!"
      Man, I loved his sense of humor!
      Cheers!
