- Roy Buchanan at the Crossroads Nite Club, Bladensburg, Maryland. March 28th 1988
Picked up as part of a videotape trade with a friend in the USA about 1992, recorded on Maxell T160 at SP. Though I am in Scotland I do have working American VCR's, that I imported from a B&H Photo Video in New York

Hello again!
I've seen this bit of film before somewhere but the sound quality wasn't nearly as good.
I was lucky enough to see Roy play live in 1973 in London (Imperial College) then again at the old Edmonton Sundown on the same tour. An amazing player. Thanks for the upload.
👍
@@picknick3591 You are the only UK person to leave a comment saying they saw Roy, I am jealous & I wish Had been there. Hope you still have the ticket stubs. 🙂
@@ScottishTeeVee 😀I was never one for collecting tickets or the stubs - looking back, I wish I had done!
I did have a collection of Marquee Club monthly programmes and kept them in a folder, only for my Mother to throw them out in a house move, along with a signed poster by Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart) when he played Bracknell Sports Centre in 1974. I never collected autographs either - although I had plenty of opportunities to do so. Back then I was going to many gigs and just saw it as yet another one!
Hindsight for you!! Never mind hey? I had a lot of fun and still have the memories . . .🤔
@@picknick3591 THANKS for your regrets & memories, I also had similar, lol, but it's interesting to hear it. It must have been thrilling to see the incredible Mr. Buchanan at that time. Isn't that guitar a beauty? he makes it sing like a nightingale here!!
Roy Buchanan - Champion and Legend
Stumbled upon Roy Buchanan recently. Couldn’t fathom what he was doing to make the sounds, but watching videos like this has helped me understand. Absolute monster player. He made it look so easy.
He blows my mind every time I hear him play, and I’ve been listening to him for over 50 years.
Thanks for watching and commenting Lenny 🍻
Since '87 for me but if got all this old albums.
exactly the king of the Telecaster guitar no effects pure guitar he didn't need any effects
Roy Buchanan ...I'll be listening to this master player until they put pennies on my eyes He's right at the very top ......don't know any guitarist that plays so effortlessly. R. I. P. Roy
really!!! share with everyone too..
ME TOO my go to comfit music .. the memmorys it brings back ... emotional ...
Yo si...con todo respeto..Fué un guitarrista fuera de encuestas...pero como Hendrix nadie
rory gallagher
A protege of his, danny gatton
Roy Buchanan is the best example that really great guitar players have their own tone!
I saw this guitar god at a small festival outside peterbough Ontario, Canada! I was stoned, Roy was jamming it! I fell in love with his guitar!
This is one of the most amazing videos i have ever seen, I'm umm, over 50. My county connects to the county he unfortunately died in. He's been my favorite since being shown the PBS best unknown guitarist video tape in the mid 80's. My first guitar teacher had me watch the whole thing as a lesson.
The same teacher was "the barber of P'ville"... played music at night and a barber in northern VA. He had his telecaster and amp in the store for when there were no customers. One day this cat walks in and sits down for a cut. Asks about the telecaster... shows more interest than most customers. "Who's your favorite guitarist?" asks the customer... Teacher's answer: "No question. Roy Buchanan." About that time, the Barber recognized the face of the customer with a grin on his face. Roy came back occasionally and these interactions were surely a highlight in the Barber's life. I wish I would have gotten a chance to meet or jam with him.
This is so priceless, thank you so much for converting and posting!
I just noticed your comment. Thanks for watching commenting and sharing the memories
It truly is. I copied it and posted it to a Facebook group administrated by one of his daughters. I got a reply from a gentleman named Buchanan who says he owns the original VCR tapes.
Both are pretty cool for one day for sure.
It’s so sad to realize that he passed away only 5 months after this performance. Rest in Peace, Roy. You were one of the all time greats. ❤
SEE HIM AT CAP CENTER SHOW WITH RORY GALLAGHER AS FIRST ACT AND HE WAS MAIN EVENT.
@@chrisscovitch7237 must have been tough to stand up against Rory though
@@jcmangan
If anyone could follow up Rory Gallagher, it would have been Roy Buchanan. The man had tricks up his sleeve that could tear the roof off of a venue.
Telecaster master the father, son and holy string indeed!
Thanks for watching and commenting 🎸
I got to see Roy at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh literally decades ago. He truly is, and was just a legend and pioneer
Was it December 30th 1983? I was there. That was the first concert I was allowed to go to with my friends. I was in the front row. At one point he looked at me and nodded when I gave him a thumbs up!
The Stanley👍😎
Was that the time that some idiot lit up a smoke bomb ?
My girl and me got down on the floor to get air from the floor vent .
Roy Buchanan played an abbreviated "Messiah" and left , couldn't blame him ..
He was so ahead of his time and peers in the sixties and hell even better here!!
RIP thank the lord we have recordings like this ❤
Thank you.
I saw this amazing guitar player at least 8 times and most of the time it was with Larry Coryell. An incredible brilliant guitar player.Whether people accept it or not Jeff Beck clearly was greatly influenced by this man. A-man who could stand next to any guitar player Jazz rock it don’t matter. He was as Good as it gets. Seeing him play at the Village Gate was invigorating.
You were very lucky to have seen him so many times, I am jealous. 🙂
omG! and with Larry Coryell!! he is a beloved musician to the best players. I i have to say it is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen~ I cannot imagine how incredulous you must have been that night at the Village Gate, how we all wish we had been so fortunate to hear & see the great Buchanan perform, and so genuine & humble too...
Jeff certainly was influenced by Roy. Both of them were the most naturally gifted electric guitarists ever for my money.
I hear some Dire Straits influences as well.
@@brachashighhopeshomestead226 saw him also at auckland town hall NZ in abt 85? with stanly clarke and anther bassist last name started with a V ,, tour called the guitar greats ... totally amazing ...
Used to work at peace cross bladensburd md. Half mile from the crossroads. Went there with 3 hippies I worked with, they didnt warn me. At the break, he was on the stage, I went up, and said, who are you? He told me, I remember that day and always will. It was that day, I decided to play a little every day. I can think of no greater praise for this very special artist. RIP Roy, you made the mark, and we miss you very much.
Honestly when I first uploaded this, I wondered if anyone who attended this place would ever see this video and leave a comment, so thank for your doing so and being the first to do so.🙂
Thanks 4 the upload. He was the Best. Better than all the rest, imagine the Stones getting him, WOW !! Talk about Exile On Main Street 😮
Roy, Jeff and Danny. The High Trinity of guitarists. They changed the instrument and took it to a whole new level. Thank you.
Danny gatton?
@@AlexMass5 yes
THOSE GUYS MADE A DIFFERENCE
You are 100% correct. hard to believe they are all in guitar heaven.
I just came across this vid on youtube . I'd seen Roy a few times in the boston area
This video has roy like I've never heard before , up close and personal . Thank you for posting.
I was very young 12-13when I first heard of Roy. My older brother was just learning the guitar at this time and got me into Roy and have been a huge fan ever since and he a major influence as a guitar player. I was fortunate to see him twice.
Thanks for watching and commenting Hoop, you were lucky to have seen Roy live
so close to his passing great to have this piece of history
Thanks for watching and commenting 🎸
Damn I wish there were more live video recordings of Roy like the Town Hall New York 1974 We were lucky to get the live video of his Austin Texas show wish there was more He was the master of the Telecaster guitar nobody I mean NOBODY could play the Telecaster like Roy Buchanan I was lucky to be able to see him live at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto back in the 80's. I even got to see Muddy Waters live at the Colonial Tavern in Toronto very early 80's
I worked at a place a mile and a half from Crossroads and many Friday nights a bunch would have our happy hours. Roy and Danny both played there.
Funny. My office was an old bank on rt 1 walking distance from there. Block up on left side .We had another at the top off post office 410 rt 1 Mile up
Can't say it enough , This guy !!!
Wow, just blown away with his technique and talent stringing ear bliss. A true musician the tele king. Sizzling... 🎸💥🏆
excelente video ,gran contenido ,belisimo el ultimo tema ,finisimo
Man I've never seen this one before
I thought I had all the Roy footage out there that you could get but this one evaded me. His playing is impeccable
You could see exactly where Jeff Beck got his influence. 🙋
Download it if you know how to, just incase this channel ever vanishes
@@ScottishTeeVee Thank you 😁
String bending beyond compare. Pinched harmonics beyond compare. This guy truly lived up to ‘Master of the Telecaster’. @scottishteevee you did it again.
Proud to say - brag - saw Roy Bichanan live.
Only 3 songs'worth - a second show on a 2 show event - late evening start and some loser up front threw a cup of beer at him. He was PISSED naturally. Stopped playing, stared at the guy and curled his pick finger at him to come on stage. Mr tough guy declined the invitation and Roy, still steaming, stood stock still for a minute then announced, "Show's over" walked offstage.
Somehow everyone understood. Roy had spoken and that was that. Shortest concert I ever attended but for sure one of the most memorable. RIP legend you were THE Telly-master.*
No offense intended to Danny Gatton & others but ...
How nice was that! Roy playing so calmly in the last number. Nothing fancy just hitting every note perfectly.
That second song is just so beautiful.
I am not a guitarist but Roy's guitar playing is so intense you can't help but listen for the next piece of masters hip!

Remarkably good quality footage given the source and the intervening years. RB was unique, a great loss to music.
Amazing! Thank you for sharing. Love Roy! RIP.
Mi guitarrista preferido. El genio de R. B. Gracias por la publicación.
This is a gem. Thank you !
R.I.P roy you were awesome never to be forgotten.
You hear people say he's got "it". Well Roy had more of "it" than anyone.
Nice thanks for sharing Roy was my moms cousin he was a cool cat
My word, what a tremendous guitarist was Roy Buchanan.
And doubly intetesting to hear him commenting on his guitar and technique.
RIP.
I grew up in that neighborhood. My parents were always going the Crossroads to see a band.My Dad knew Roy pretty well. He had some wild stories about him. He was living in Virginia when he did the Crossroads gig. One of a kind. His cousin told me the Police beat him really bad and covered it up by hanging him ? I guess we will never know.
I heard that s lot around town. It was strange.
Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton were the 2 Tele-Masters. Hard to say which of the two was more gifted. Danny may have been a bit more technically precise, but I think Roy was more unique & original. Danny was more controlled, while Roy was really out there with some of his playing, like a train almost going off the rails but somehow managing to arrive at the intended destination. Kinda like Jimi Hendrix in that regard, but vastly different styles, of course.
I grew up in the DC area and there were times when you could go to a club to see Danny for awhile and then go a couple of miles and catch Roy. They were both great and fun to watch. Sometimes late at night, they would see some other local players come in and try to learn some of licks and tricks they played. You’d know the other players were in the audience when during a difficult solo, the guys would turn their backs on the audience.
if i may add, Albert collins as a third. Not out of skill or technicality but he made an art out of showmanship with the telecaster and certainly made his own style with it.
Fender should make two monuments. one to Hendrix for the Stratocaster and one to Buchanan for the Telecaster.
Lots of great Strat & Tele players out there past and present. No denying the two you mentioned but let’s not forget James Burton, Steve Cropper, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore and so many more.
Wow. Thanks for this one.
Sensational. 5 month before his death.
+ rare Interview.
Uncroyable, Impossible.....
ty i saw Roy 5 times and this is great insight
So much soul
I got to know Roy when he came to ATL in the 70's. We became friends and he showed me some of his secrets, which elevated him to mentor for me.
My old boss office was off that street. They went. Drinking there 4 nites a a week. We saw him so many times
You were very lucky to have seen Roy more than once
@@godbyone 100 times, WOW, I am jealous, wish I had even just attended one show. Danny Gatton, now there's a name I had almost forgotten about, I hope you saw him a few times. I was sure I had some video of Danny, but I can't find it, must dig deeper into my tapes. Thanks for watching, commenting and sharing the memories, what you and others do in leaving such comments is one of the great things about this channel, the memories of people who saw bands, worked with them, were friends with them, all sharing little memories and keeping them alive.🎸
@@ScottishTeeVee I saw Danny a lot. I actually got to record. With band . On my UA-cam site. I did a song a nod to Danny. The title made him laugh “ kiss my bluegrass 3” . Check it out. I have nt put the ones with the band yet. He had a drummer Tim biery played with Frank marino. That was great. The bass player a lot of people used around dc wade Matthew’s. Was unreal. I wish there was more recordings of him. .
Бьюкенен один из лучших👍🏾
The man bro 🙏
Saw him play at local community college in early 1970s. Its refreshing to see a clean player showing off his guitar details. Rather then a myriad of pedals and enhancements
You were so lucky to have been there. Thanks for watching and commenting.
How good was this bloke?!!! Saw him in Brisbane, probably '85. As a rule not overly enthused by guitar shredders, but he was beyond that by some stretch!
Probably in 1987 when he toured Australia and New Zealand .

Damn! Guitar lessons from Roy Buchanan, what could be better? An upgrade from my $150 Squier Tele, maybe. Hey, came with a hard case! Sounds ok to my down front wall o' sound stadium blitzed ears, anyway. RIP Roy!
Listen to anything recorded. He never missed a note.

Reminds me Jeff Beck style a bit, fantastic playing. Sad they both are gone.
where do you think jeff took some of that style from? Both jeff and clapton were both into roy
All things Roy (to their own) ! That “Tele” is better than any Broadcaster, No caster 50-53 Tele! Hands down! Same sound! better range! Does everything better!

Lol. Loved ol Roy too!!
Aah Yes
Lot of people don’t realize that Roy was the first choice of the Stones to replace Brian Jones. They “settled” for Mick Taylor.
he was a genius - too good for the Stones but it would have been lucrative. not worth selling your soul to you know who.
According to keith him, clapton, and ronnie wood pissed in roy’s beer at a recording session because he was being a asshole. They also made the right choice getting mick taylor, roy doesn’t know how to write songs and wouldn’t have fit image wise, i also think that story about him turning the stones down was absolute bullshit and was made up
@@knightfall9394 Lot of good it did Mick Taylor to write with the Stones. He got little or no credit for his efforts. They would have screwed Roy also.
@@knightfall9394I read that somewhere too - Roy offered the job. Also how do three men control their dicks enough to piss in the same pint glass and it doesn’t runneth over? Absurd. Unless they pissed in three separate pints over the period. Equally absurd.
any coward that would piss in a mans beer is scum@@knightfall9394

So in the end Nancy went and he got his signature model(?)
I been a Roy Buchanan fan since the mid-1970s, but this has to be the weirdest infomercial I've ever seen. I wonder how many guitars he sold--he's not exactly an articulate salesman. But how good was Roy? Name another rock god who could wear a sweater vest and still receive worship.
Whats the name of the last song?

It's Roy Buchanan Bluesmaster signature model guitar by Fritz Bros. I had the literature back in the day and was considering ordering one once. They still make them apparently.

"Roy Buchanan is one of Me most influential Tele players who ever lived according to everyone. His playing turned the heads of listeners in many styles including, R&B, Metal, Rock, and Country. He is considered a master by his peers and fans. I am and always have been a huge Roy fan, and had the ultimate honor of being able to design and build him his signature guitar in 1987. Working together, we developed his guitar, the “Bluesmaster.”
He was looking for something unavailable at the time, so 1 had to invent the features he wanted in a Tele style instrument, Roy bent a lot at the nut and had very strong fingers causing string breakage, as well as tuning problems with conventional nut materials. So I came up with the patented stainless nut to eliminate those problems. It really worked. It even increased the sustain of the guitar for more steel like smoothness.
New at the time were Sperzel locking tuners that added to the tuning stability. From there I added tall, but not fat frets, for his style, along with a smooth but not slick ebony fret board. To facilitate the upper frets, I made the angled neck pocket and for the problem of the 60 cycle bum we used EMG Tele pickups with an EMG Strat pickup in the middle position. These pickups are the lower output EMG’s for a more natural sound. We also developed a simple 7 position switching for the pickups using a push/pull pot in the tone control. Thees features plus our stainless steel bridge and control plate make the “Bluesmaster” a solid choice for the professionals."
