Today for the first time on the channel, we are checking out Danny Gatton and his tune Redneck Jazz Explosion! I didn't know what to expect going in, but it definitely lived up to the name! One of the absolute best ever! So blessed to have been able to see him several times, Danny and the boys never disappointed! Buddy Emmons is a complete beast on pedal steel. This entire album is unreal.

That's Steve Wolf on bass. Still plays in the DC area with Tom Principato, I believe. Danny did a record on the Blue Note label called New York Stories. Killer disc. Gone way too soon.

That is called his "Magic Dingus Box" it controlled effects, stage lights, I think possibly a Leslie but not sure on that, he had it where he could switch it from one guitar to another, self built, but people were claiming that was a big part of his sound so he quit using it and just plugged into his amp. He is known for Tele's, there is a Fender Danny Gatton signature tele that was one of their best selling artist models. His guitar tech Joe Barden invented the single coil size humbuckers using Danny as his test subject and that Tele used those pups, they are still regarded as some of the best pups out there I've had a few in various guitars, very hot and clean and not for beginners because they pick up everything. He did a half of an Austin City Limits that is def worth watching, thought about requesting that one instead but it's 25 ish minutes thought that might be too long.

He plays all styles, jazz, rockabilly, blues etc. said he always fell back on jazz because it always paid the bills, he is probably known for his rockabilly though as his famous The Humbler bootleg was all rockabilly, there is a documentary called The Humbler making the indi movie rounds now.

If you like this kind of stuff, you should check out a guy named Johnny Hiland. Ricky Skaggs once said he was the best living guitarist. Check it out, You won't be disappointed. Kurt from Maine

Speaking of unexpected jazziness and complexity, I'd also suggest "Symptom of Life" by WIllow or really almost anything on that Empathogen album. It looks like you guys are already somewhat aware of Dirty Loops, Snarky Puppy, Chris Thile and now Jacob Collier.

Appreciate the suggestion! So much talent out there that’s literally mindblowing! You a musician yourself? Thanks so much!

@@setonhillstudios Began as one at a music conservatory, but no - not in a long time But seeing Jacob Collier live at the Kennedy Center did re-awaken my interest in music of the last 10 years. I'd largely lost interest in corporatized new music in the 1990's.

This is why Roy Buchannan comparisons are ridiculous. Danny was also a great straight up jazz player. He was heavily influenced by Les Paul. And also played Gibson guitars from the beginning to the end, not just the Telecaster.

I would check the "Relentless" album with Joey DeFrancesco.
Also Danny was heavily influenced by Lenny Breau. See "One for Lenny" on the "New York Stories " LP.
I am pretty sure Danny would put Lenny Breau above all others.
