- Here's some of the raw interview footage that Doug McKelway and his NBC crew shot at Dannys' garage next to his house in 1993 for the profile on Danny called "Homegrown Hero" which aired on Ch 4 in Washington,DC
This is where UA-cam shines.
I had the pleasure of meeting him about a month before he died. He was in town along with Jerry Donahue for the opening of James Burton's club in Shreveport, La.. He was a down to earth guy and a true guitar master. RIP.
"Playin' fast isn't as important as getting a tone." Amen.
No wiser words have ever been spoken. RIP Brother
All them bullshit shredders should take note
This footage is priceless
"Playing fast is not as important as getting a tone"! Danny Gatton
Danny was a true master of his craft. Every time I get down and feel like taking my life I think of Danny and people like him and remind myself of all that I still have to give to the world. So sad such a true artist that I cant even fathom the things he would have done with a guitar if he was still with us. A true spirit of greatness was in his soul and he will be missed by millions that he never thought would miss him.
I feel underneath the great humour danny was a restless guy, all the unfinished projects, kind of similar to his playing where he had many ideas going at once in his mind. Danny deserved a great career
Elvira, Elvira, My Heart's on fire for Elvira. 🎼🎶
Deserves got nothin’ to do with it
Cassandra is her name, I'm friends with her, and she's a lesbian now, so your hearts on fire for another girl 😂
Damn please post more of this !!!!!!!’ Danny was an incredible genius that shouldn’t have left so soon ! RIP Danny love you
Only came across this amazing guitarist last week. Watching this has made me realize he was also a down to earth guy. Why should a guy with so much talent end his own life? so sad.
What a straight-up bloke he was. Thanks for posting this great footage. It'd be fascinating to see more if it exists.
Danny Gatton will be remembered, loved and missed for a long time, God bless
Kind of hard to watch. Only because that garage is where he took his last breath. God Bless Danny Gatton. One of the finest that ever lived! The problems and trouble of this world are no longer your concern brother. Rest well and teach the Angel Band how to chicken pick!
Jackie, did you know Danny ? I loved hearing and watching him in the late 60s and on.
His garage was amazing.
@@pattynVABeach No I didn't but I feel he and I had a kinship. We are both Telecaster players, we both love classic Fords, and we both struggle with depressed
Spend time in that garage. It’s oddly very quiet and empty feeling.
I was thinking the same. I see that Vice clamp and my stomach still turns all these years later. So thankful for this kind of footage though.
Thank you for posting these videos of Danny Gatton. I play harmonica, 45 years and was full-time pro by 20. Started out in Bluegrass Bands, then Honk-Tonk Country, had a Swing Dance Jazz band for 10 years, play Blues, Pop, Folk, Funk, etc. and listen to Drummers, Bass Players, Horn Players for inspirations and hope some of the "groove" will assimilate. Danny Gatton of course has all these genres and I jam along with his recordings (like with Joey DeFrancesco) to pick up ideas. Love that with every chorus you never know what is next! Coll seeing this Fender Tweed Twin, I have a pair of 1959 Bassman.
Little John harp player is in my band, he toured with the who's who of blues players, he was a prodigy when young kid, there's documentaries about him here on UA-cam
Wow. Danny is one of the best guitarists .... and probably the BEST Telecaster guitarist ... I've ever seen. He was at a roadhouse called "Doc Holidays" in Shakopee, MN back in the early 80s and it was one of the best performances I'd ever seen. And, we hung out with him and his skeleton crew until the girls showed up and we moved away from the scene like we should have as respectful men.
So kool to see Danny in his other natural surroundings. You can tell much about a person by what is in their shop. Thanks for posting this.Miss you Danny.
Danny was like alot of genius ....he was immensely talented but also a tortured soul...it's kind of sad watching this video because it was only like a year later that he would take his life in that very garage...we all sure miss your genius Danny....🎸🎸🎸
*"If I was talking to another musician and I wanted to warn him about Danny Gatton....I'd say you better have your act together....this guy's heavy. He'll have your lunch."* ~ _Les Paul_
Actually, Les Paul said. "he will have you for lunch"... from an interview I did with Les Paul...:-)
We're dying for the Humbler movie to be released. Theatre's, DVD, streaming video?? I'm sure it's gonna be awesome.
I live in D.C. and used to go see Danny play any chance I got.. Danny &the fat boys or playing with evan johns & h-bombs or lots of other good shows with the Danny Gatton Band..good stuff
Danny blows every one away 🎼 Sad loss !🎸
"He dug street rods more than music, but he could still play the breaks off anyone." This is absolutely amazing. Thank you!
Jeff Beck was the same he too loved hot rods and was a master machinist RIP both of them
Thanks for the video Bob!
This is great stuff really nice to see danny in this informal way
Cool... Thanks for these Danny Gatton clips. One of my favorite guitar players. Only wish I got to see him :(
When it cut off I went "AUGHH!" like if your cable cut out during the big play of the Super Bowl.
Me too!!!
First The Sopranos, now this?!
Yep.
Sadly, kinda how his life ended...
I would of been fast friends with Danny...Even though i only lived 70 miles from him i never met him...Im a guitarist and into animal sanctuary and classic cars...Sure do miss Danny...
Belongs on the Mt Rushmore of guitarists.
This short clip is really revealing in a way that "OK I'm ready!" final cuts rarely are....the man in his element.
I had the privilege of him being my mentor spent many hours in that garage we were either hot rodding cars. . Mainly just me watching him spin wrenches and he loved that as much as he did playing.
Great interview!!
This is one of those people who you wish lived in your neighborhood so you could go over and drink beer and help him work on the cars, and maybe later he might break out the guitar and play some.
The man really seems like regular folks.
So cool to see this raw footage. Danny was a MONSTER. Such a sad story...
Danny was the best mechanic who ever lived and he wasn,t a bad guitar player
I wasn’t sure if I should watch when I related where they were… but I am glad I did. The man had it all. Or so it seemed. Under appreciated but much missed.
Listening to tunes WITH DANNY in his hot rod garage. I didn't want that to end.
I miss Danny Gatton and his performances. I wish he was still with us...............
Awesome interview... thanks for posting! :)
wow felt like i was hangin with one of the greatest ever... the untouchable ,the humbler , the tele master legendary heart o gold. im sure he made a great angel. ✌
hometown hero something to be
He was so much more
What an amazing talent. So sad he was gone by his own hand in less than a year after this was filmed.
This is great!
wish there was more
Great stuff!
Danny❤️
But it cuts off right when it’s getting really good! Fantastic stuff!
There's more footage that will be available soon from this interview.........
@@bobdavis1694 thanks for posting this! I'd love to see more footage
Yes - that's the man
This is the garage where he ended it all, RIP Danny, hopefully you've found peace
In a few weeks, it will marks 30 years since the man took his life in that garage. RIP to best picker ever walked the earth
"My pet raccoons used to sleep in the bed just like havin a dog or a cat" .....lol !
Take two....wish there was more
That tape is rad too.
Virtuoso mechanic like Beck...!??
i learn more about guitar when he talks about his dashboard, than 50 youtube guitar heroes put together....
I knew Danny well and if I had known he had taken a lesson from Sophocles Pappas, I would have told my father, who was his attorney. Pappas gave my dad free lessons, but he was more of a vocalist. My dad thought Danny was the "cat's meow" having heard him play in Annapolis with Charlie Byrd. He was unaware that I knew Danny but usually thought my "musician friends" were all potheads.
This is Danny's last stop, where he took his life
Been in this garage multiple times. It’s massive and actually larger then the house.
The best musician by far
Danny didn't mention it, but he did all his own pearl inlays and also was a master tinkerer, hence his "little black box" which was attached to his twin reverb.
I wish there was a part 2
Same garage Danny ended his life in just a year later.
He was miscast as an entertainer. He was meant to be a studio musician. By the time people found out about him he was a relic of a bygone era. He really did not have the personna to be a great entertainer. He was too much like the guy on your bowling team or the guy who fixes your car. But Nashville is full of guys from his tribe. Just my opinion.
Is there more of this?
Sky King is such a good song.
Danny makes a mixtape!
BOO, why it end early?
Doug McKelway, interviewer?
Hell yes, elvira
Well, lastly what was in his shop was lots of Danny. Kinda all over the place.
Still sad twenty five years later.
:' man sad shit for sure
He died right there.😕
Americana!
How’s he doing?
He died; blew his own head off.
the counter of likes was stopped at nuymer 666 i am the 667 :) RIP Danny what a loss!!! 🙏
I got a telecaster but I don’t got a car as nice as that.
Danny loved raccoons!!! 12:20
just doesn't strike me as a guy who wants to end his life.. I mean he wants another racoon FFS
danny seemed a little nervous and self concious ....
A little resentful sad to see
