The singer/guitarist is literally playing his ass off. If you saw him as the lone guitarist in a club you’d be blown away, yet next to Gatton he is just dwarfed. If he were throwing out bricks, then Gatton is throwing out walls of music. Any amount of praise Gatton gets, it will never be enough. He lived full time in a universe that even the greatest guitarists could only hope to visit occasionally. Goat 🐐
When it's time for a guitar lead, Danny plays it and then gets out of the way and plays pure rhythm to make the other musicians sound better. What a concept! Too bad that so many other guitarists don't ever catch on to this simple way of doing it right.
Classic Danny Gatton, always at his best - he was the best true lead guitarist - playing without any distortive effects - no one has ever come close to his skills and technique!
Got to see Danny at the Troubador Los Angeles As I make it a point to see super talented muscians!! He could jump from rockabilly to country to blues to jazz you name it he played it. I met him very very briefly a lovely gentlemen. Heard about the gigs he did in D.C packed like sardines intense!! Very saddened when we lost him. Family of Ronnie Scott's London P.S so glad people are becoming aware of this giant!!
This is gold. At this time I was playing guitar at a club in Morningside MD 5 nights a week. I remember the music scene around DC was varied and fantastic. Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, Chick Hall, Garrick Alden, all GREAT players. Killer pedal steel players too!
I think it speaks very highly of Danny's character, that he brought this at the time, a very young, and very talented guitarist onstage with him, and allowed him to shine, because he certainly did not have to that, but he did, and that was Danny.
Pete Kennedy, John Previti, Dave Elliott. Danny Gatton. Yeah there were some advantages to growing up in the DMV. I always remember Pete wearing that vest back in the day.
Awesome upload!!... great condition for the age. Well shot. Ahhh tripods. Hats off to the bass player. Solo at 1.22 pretty sick. All super talented. Danny's bottle neck is off the show 2. Pub gigs can capture so much magic and this ain't no exception.
Somewhere in Massachusetts was a young man , not as good as Danny , on the circuit ….ALMOST made it. Couldn’t control his demons . As a matter of fact, I could think of several cats around this time , none that could touch Danny , but man , they were still amazing. That’s how GREAT GATTON WAS. I was blessed to tag along with my father during this time . What an amazing experience. Danny was the best .
Haha, same for my Strat when I watch the SRV at the El Mocambo DVD from 1983. But we're just taking their spirit and energy and doing the best we can with it, and I like it!
Awesome video. Maybe as time goes by and technology becomes cheaper and easier it use it would be unbelievably great if this video could be ran through the process that cleaned up the Beatles video "Get Back". I would definitely purchase it.
Talk about two entirely different procedures for cleaning up film, it certainly benefited peter that he probably had all the negatives and everything to help that restoration process.
I don't know ..I think it being as what some would say distorted.. both visually and sonically is what probably makes this more priceless than anyting... The only way for it to be true visually and for the ears you would have to be down in front live.. and that's what makes this video great.. you actually have to imagine
Never saw this video and the other guitarist is an amazing guitarist,at the top of his game but Danny is just on another level. Inspires me but at the same time it embarrasses me to play the guitar.
Priceless video! Great band. Yes, Danny Gatton is top dog here and I can never say enough good things about his playing. Danny is on a level all his own and second to none! But the other guitarist "Pete Kennedy" is no slouch and is holding down his side of the stage with some impressive guitar work. See min. 1:18:40. If only I could go back in time and be there live.
I found out that this is Pete Kennedy playing. Seriously heavy guitar slinger man! I thought this was Steuart Smith because a commenter on another video said so. Sorry for spreading rumours!
There is extra-ordinary phenomenal playing here ... But someone please tell me what is going on with Danny, the weird hat & what looks like dyed jet back hair.
All these Gatton pub gig clips are priceless
You got that right!!

Well written.
Great post 👍
@ John O'Mary - Excellent and precise observation!
He had more talent in his small toenails than I have in my entire body, lol.
Pete Kennedy is VERY GOOD... but when you are on stage with GATTON, you ARE HUMBLED!!!
Singer in the 1985 Marty McFly life preserver

I love comping well more than anything when playing. Fitting in just right.

Fabulous. So sad he passed aged 49. Amazing talent gone. RIP
49 just a kid

Danny AND his band were always world class go go go Danny go!!!
Pete Kennedy's playing is the big revelation here - great stuff.
Is that the guy on the Strat, singing?
@@sgt.thundercok4704 yes
When Danny took the cigarette out of his mouth and stuck it in the headstock of his Tele , you knew the fun was about to start. RIP Danny

Great Video - good sound - good tunes - Gatton is Boss.
incredible!
Wow!!! Thanks for sharing this. Just now seeing it. Love it.
Love this stuff. Keep it coming. I only got to see Danny once and I didn't know who he was at the time.
No body giving props to that other guy on guitar on "Sleepwalk"? Devastating! What's his name? Definitely holds his own along side Danny! I love him!

Wow...I feel like throwing my Tele in the trash. lol

The other guitar player how good is he? Unbelievable, yet, he had to play in the shadow of Danny, this world is so not fair
Thank you for posting this!!
awesome!!!
Ah danny tu était le meilleur
a full bottle of Jack lol...go Danny go!
Deep Urts ! Gatton Is The Boss !
Man, I feel bad for the singer-guitarist. He's a really fantastic player...but...being in a band with Danny Gatton? Damn lol
the hat
Anyone notice Danny's cap?
Gotta be intimidating to play with Danny...
Is the other guitar player Arlen Roth?
I've been under the impression that this is Steuart Smith. I'd like to know for sure though. Great playing!

Steuart Smith was in Switchblade with Ratso around that time I think
Hats off to this guitar player that hung in there, with mf Danny Gatton.!!! Held yer ground against a titan.
Well done dude!!!
There's only one

January in DC and old VHS or BETA tapes.
No better full on 10 finger player
Pete Kennedy is VERY GOOD... but when you are on stage with GATTON, you ARE HUMBLED!!!
Wow, the guitarist who played the opening track on that horrible, horrible tv show that shall not be named, STOLE it outright from Danny, for shame.
