thanks for sharing sir!
I like your cage I'm be making some but the big ones on the right of the room how long are they thanks
So about 5 days ago I had the idea to raise some quail with no prior background or experience. I started watching your videos and they gave me the confidence to jump right into it. I'm making your 3 stack design right now and including the egg roll out bins. Great content and detail, i'll be following. Thanks!
Hi how is your quail journey going a year later?
@@MimiSupreme I started with x20 1day olds and ended up with x14 after I culled the extra males. I only used the top 2 tiers of the cage. 2/5 male/female ratio. They started laying eggs and after a couple of weeks I incubated the first batch. x36 eggs in the incubator, x33 ended up fertile, and all x33 hatched and were healthy. When those x33 were about a week old we got hit by hurricane Laura, devastating damage with my home and property and everywhere nearby. 10% of homes in my neighborhood we're unlivable or destroyed. I kept up with all the quails best I could and all 33 survived until adulthood and started laying. With all the hurricane damage I just couldn't keep up with them all and had too many eggs to deal with. I ended up giving everything away to my sister in law. If I do get back into quails I won't do a tier system, just a single layer cage where poop goes on the ground outside for easier clean up. The max I would put in the tiered cages is 7 per tier. Anymore and you have to change it daily because the poop tray stays wet, even with alot of pine shavings and its a fly breeding ground. In all, the family really enjoyed them and it was well worth the effort.
how did it go?
@@garballs1443 My high school biology teacher dropped by one day and filled up 2 Gatorade bottles with fly larvae. Said he would toss in the freezer for fish bait. So they are good for something. If nothing else, to feed the chickens
Me too
@Cortunixcorner. I made this today and followed your directions. All’s I can say is wow. What a great set up. I love it. I have the cage from hatch time it is just too pricey for me. This I did for about 175 dollars. Thank you for sharing this
Built halfway through my quail condo today; framework came out solid so far :) THANK YOU so much for sharing clear instructions on how to do this!
Glad you are enjoying the videos, thanks for commenting!
So for the budget minded you can also buy 2x4s and cut them in half. They are the same price as a 2x2 furring strip (worth checking in your area). I suspect you could also do the math on larger lumber as well but I felt this was a good balance of time savings vs cost for me. Hope that helps bring this into the budget for someone else as well. Great video, I'll be working on the self watering system next!
Thank you for this video , very clear instructions. Going to attempt to make it with my father
Made it, the perfect quail cage. Thanks!
Super easy to make...thank you! Finally something I can follow along and build!
Great and thanks for the comment!
Thank you! I just got my quail this year and my wife and I were so happy to see our first eggs!
Some of the most informative videos on youtube I've seen, from coup build to modifications to feed mix ratio. Well done Sir. Thank you. 🏆
Thank you
I’m so grateful I came across your guide! I was having trouble with my measurements/design even tho it was basically the same set up as you. Thank you for doing this!!
I'm glad you found it helpful Sara. Good luck with your cage build and thanks for commenting!
Just getting started with quail. My friend gave me 4 8 week old hens and 1 rooster to get me started. I may order some eggs to incubate once I have a few pens built. Thank you for these videos.
I am loving your DIY videos. Quail aside you could have a channel just on building stuff and I'd watch that too. I am just getting into quail and I have found many of your videos very useful. I am not building this exact cage but something very similar. Thank you for the great videos!
Thank you from Atlantic Canada
Save a lot on material and very clear instructions not leaving us guessing
Going to start the build next week and order the quail eggs as soon as all is ready. 😅
Went to buy 2 x 2's and 1 x 2's today. Both Major big box stores did not have any 2 x 2's and the one store that had 1 x 2's looked like they were dragged down I-35 before they delivered them. So frustrating. Thanks for the detailed instructions. The changes I will be making are to have the back and front legs 2 inches difference so I can put a slanted roof on and paint the wood for outdoor use.
Just finished this build with the egg roll out trays. It works well so far
Appreciate the information
Ah thanks for this video! Going to make one for Father’s Day!
I am building a cage using your plan and I enjoy your videos. I plan to get my quail from Zack at Myshire Farm soon. I look forward to seeing the both of you tonight on your first live Stream.
I love your videos. Try using green treated fence boards ripped in 3 for your wire shelf. The treated lasts a bot longer and they are cheap.
Great detailed video! I'm going to try and build this soon. I'm sure my quails would appreciate a proper cage.
My hubby and I are looking for a new coop design for our quail this spring, we're gonna be doing this! Combined with the automatic waterer, j-feeder, and egg rollout, this will be absolutely perfect for our space constraints. Thanks for posting!
What model of J-Feeder works with this setup? Thanks!

Loved the ease of assembly. Great design. Thanks for your videos
Welcome
That looks like an excellently planned cage system, that is easy to build. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Thank you for the comment!
Used a similar build for my grow out cages, except I installed an insertable divider in the middle on each tier and had two horizontal opening doors instead. Once the birds in each tier are able to be sexed, the divider will go in and they can be separated by gender. This helps when I'm selling them or move onto culling them. The horizontal doors don't need another mechanism to keep them open and they can't block the other doors.
Sounds like a nice setup ... thanks for the comment.
Really great video . Thank you .

I think i can start making cage now, thanks a lot for the instruction sir !!

Building mine now this video is so great full of info
hello my friend your great work arrived in Brazil and inspired me to build on this same model YOUR WORK WAS WONDERFUL A GREAT HUG
Thank you very much!
Thank you so much for the video. This is the first thing I’ve ever tried o build . It was a success! ☺️
Thanks, I'm glad to hear it was a success. Thanks for the comment!
So I'm currently building this I've learned two things that the 2x2 I got are not really square so when you mark your 16 on center go up .75 inches and make another line this will ensure that everything is nice and square. Also beg steal or borrow a miter saw flush joints ensures alot more stability and strength. I'm no means a carpenter but thought this help.
The quail cage came out awesome. The only thing I did different on the water system was put a shut off valve right after the bucket. That way of you have to do any repair
on the cups you don't have to drain the whole bucket. You shut the vale then drain your lines only. The water remains in the bucket.
Great! I sincerely appreciate your wisdom and prompt replies! Quail on!
Love the supply list and measurements at the end! Thank you!
I do recommend making the cage somewhat narrower so the poop trays fight a little tighter. I made mine like this and there is large gaps on the ends and in between the trays.
I guess I should say I made mine "twice" as wide. So my front and back rails are 74" which is just a bit too wide.
It had build mine twice to get it right since I am not a professional and it as a hobby...
Thank you for putting these videos up. I just got my first quail chicks and need a lot of help with the learning curve. Much appreciated!!!
Most welcome ... thanks!
This is the perfect video! Just what I was looking for. Thank you
Thank you!
I like your set ups for the cages, I’m following you, Thank you
I love these cages. This is definitely going on my saved lists. I like the wood back and the hardware cloth. I’ve always worried about little cat paws or animal hands being able to reach through those 1x2 wire fronts.
Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you like the video.
Actually I was brain storming about how I could add egg roll out trays then noticed you were one step ahead of me and already put a mod video out for it!! So they are even more perfect!!
@@amechelb Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you are enjoying the channel.
In our case snakes would fit in through the larger wire. I love our black snakes but do not want to share eggs & quail with them. ;)
Really excited about doing this project with my dad. Thank you for the comprehensive step by step instructions.
Building today Love your vids!!! always seem to find the answer I need with little trouble!
Thanks heaps mate, great design.
Hello, thank you so much for taking the time to explain how to build this excellent cage setup. I got all the wood I need to make this setup. I decided to pick up 2x4s and rip them to width instead of buying them individually; this saved me lots of money. I see that the bottom cage setup has a center bracing. I think you have 6 2x1s, but it needs 9 2x1s. Am I wrong, or did I not read it correctly. Once again, thank you so much; your knowledge is priceless.
very good design thankyou very much for your videos, if you are screwing ply on the back and top you dont need the diagonal bracing
Thanks for this Terry. 2 questions and a request: 1) You just use the drip pans instead of screening the ceilings? 2)Know a source for the vinyl coated floor wire for less than $450/roll?...and request: I for one would look forward to your plans for a table top incubator. HAPPY 4TH !!
I bought 15' hardware net for 36$ nearly 3x cost of galvanized and not as stiff but hoping with the cross support that it will be sturdy enough while providing a softer surface for the feather friends to walk on :)
I'm wondering if buying galv 1/2 and using a poly dip would be more cost effective
What a great and informative video, Is there a cut list for this project?
wonderful work friend. I love your video.
thank you
First, thanks for the thorough video and the supplies/cut list! Second, I just want to note that I think there are a couple small goofs on the cut list. I bought (18) 1x2x8s to make 2 sets of cages, and just 9 of them provided all the pieces I needed per the list (12 each of 37" and 22-1/2") for 6 floors (2 sets of cages worth). However, I've realized that since you put a center support in on the floors, the cut list should specify 6 @ 37" and (not 6, but) 9 @ 22-1/2". Either way I map out cutting the pieces, (6) 1x2s would be enough for a single set with that number of pieces.
Also, the (6) 21" 2x2s that go in alongside the floors didn't make it to the cut list (which would increase the number of 21" 2x2s to 20). I had two 2x2s left after cutting all the items on the list, so I'll be able to cut those six pieces out of those.
I'm looking forward to getting our growing birds into these quickly-and building the cabinet incubator from your other video!
Hey Rebecca!
Where did you get your eggs, which breed did you choose, how many eggs did you start your incubation with, what was your hatch rate succces, which incubator and egg turner racks did you use, and what are your likes and dislikes on the incubators!
Sorry for all the questions, but I'm crippled up, and having to transition to something different to make a living and that 'different' is raising quail to sell eggs and meat to pay the bills. I'm using the Wuhan Virus money to pay for it and I can't afford to make any mistakes.
Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY
@@jrbailey3208 Hi, JR. I got my eggs through a friend who ordered them from her supplier. They are jumbo pharoahs. She incubated them for me in her cabinet incubator. We had 86/120 hatch rate, and I plan to build my own incubator per Terry's video on this channel. If we ever get our stimulus money, a portion of it will likely be spent on a pair of egg turners, otherwise I'll have to jury-rig a turning system up.
Before my friend offered to order and hatch eggs for me, I was going to order jumbos from Myshire. I did some comparison shopping, and their reviews were very good with a good hatch rate, and their egg/shipping costs were slightly less expensive than many of the others around. Sorry I don't have more detailed info on the incubator and racks. I wish you luck!
Oh! One other cut-list note (which I'll edit into my original comment) in case you plan to build these cages or a modified version: During the video, he cuts another (6) 21" 2x2s to go in alongside the floors, which didn't make it to the cut list (so increase the number of 21" 2x2s to 20 so that you don't have to pull out the saw again). I had two 2x2s left after cutting all the items in the list, so I'll be able to cut those six pieces out of those. I also realized that (3) 22.5" pieces of 1x2 are missing from the cut sheet: it should be 6 @37" and 9 @22.5" cut from 1x2s. Good luck!

Hey again Rebecca!
Thank you for the quick and full reply, I DO appreciate it!
My stimulus money showed up today and I'll be using it to start my limited quail biz, so every penny counts!
After much research, I've decided to start out with the Hovabator 1588 model (Forced Air with Digital Temp controls), but using the Little Giant Quail Egg Racks/Turner. I contacted Incubator Warehouse (by Wyoming standards, they're 'right next door' in Idaho) couple of different times, once by email and the other by Online Chat, to confirm if the LG Turners would fit in the Hova1588. They confirmed it did, but oddly enough, the Hova Egg Turner will NOT fit in the LG incubator (the LG bator does NOT have a reliable Temp control according to all my research).
The reason I want the LG is that it is supposed to have a little larger egg cup size compared to the newer Hova egg cup size. The Hova E.T. cup size allows eggs to roll OUT of their sockets and get cracked, crushed, which of course kills the chick, contaminates the incubator, and can kill the healthy eggs still intact. Not something I want to experience, as the cost of fertile eggs is NOT cheap (as you well know).
Things are starting to open up in Wyoming (gyms, barber shops, salons) so I'm hoping that by the time my chicks are in the home built brooder, the restaurants will be opening up, and that might well create a nice market for my Cull Roosters (since appx 60% of a hatch is male). Once my chicks are in the brooder, I'll be ordering more eggs (probably on Lock Down Day, but may have to adjust that due to shipping expectations from the hatchery).
I'm also going with the Columbus Aqua Horizontal Nipple Waterers, but in PVC piping. However, I'm exploring using a Pressure Reducer/Regulator for the Watering System, so instead of using a Gravity Feed system like most folks do (including Terry), I can hook a water hose directly to the PVC line with the Reducer cutting the pressure down enough to work with the HWN; that way, the 3 herniations in my lumbar and the 3 compressions in my neck, along with two really bad knees and one bad hip, will NOT be screaming at me for going up and a ladder with a hose and standing there to fill up 3-5, 5 gallon water buckets.
Anywho, thanks again for the info and I look forward to hearing how your flock is doing!
Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY
@@rebeccakosierowski9537
Forgot to thank you for the extra Cut List info.......I already have 2x4's laying around, so I'll be using them instead of 2x2's. Heavier, but they're already paid for and the money I'd spend on 2x2's can go to other items to build my system! I think I'm also going to install a 'bumper bar' on the catch rail of the Egg Feed system, to minimize cracked eggs.
Sir that is super awesome you say quail cage am thinking brooder with a few mods thanks for sharing sir
Terry, first I am new to this and love your channel as well as My Shire Farms. This is my first comment in whole so please share with My Shire as well. Just wanted to let you know the plastic netting I have heard mentioned on your channel and what to look for. It is actually polypropylene. You can find it by searching polypropylene bird netting amazon has it. You will have to scroll thru to get the proper one as there are many varieties of it.
Thank you so much for this video and the cut list! So helpful!

very nice instructions. Not over detailed and slow to follow but just the right amount of detail. Nice cages too. Do you not add a sand box? Mine will be outside so I may add a foot so I can enclose one end with plywood but I really like this design. Thank you.
Thanks for instructions, how many quails fit in one cage?

Thank you so much for this video
Hi there, great tutorial and build plan! I ended up making these with the egg rollout trays for my birds and absolutely love them, with one caveat - I found out two of my birds escaped through the gap for the rollouts! If anyone else has had the same issue, I found a cheap but effective remedy: cut some mud flaps down to size to cover the opening and staple or screw them down. I cut the door half separately so I can open the door easily but it's still secure when closed, and even though we have raccoons I have yet to find any evidence of them trying to get inside the cages or under the flaps. Hope this helps someone!
Thanks for the FYI
So I love the idea. I’m building one similar to this but for outside. making it a bit more like a bunny hutch and adding a roof. Can’t have a water system though until I build a quail shed
Got everything to build that tonight. But I was wondering how to you add a heat lamp?
good job mr.
Very nice set up!

Nice work and thanks for sharing!
Great video! 👍🏻
Thanks!
Great video! Thanks
Great video Sir! I had a few questions I was hoping you could answer. 1. So each tier holds 18 quail each? 2. You power wash it every 6 months outside correct but in between you just clean the drip pans. 3. How do you collect the eggs? 4. So if you did this in the basement you'd just have to leave on a light for them 16 hrs a day or so correct? Thanks again
This is what I've been trying to double check. Need to know how many
Hi thanks for sharing your knowledge and videos
I purchased a set of 3 quail cages without housing, do you have any suggestions on how I can build a housing for all 3 and they have a divider each from wynola ranch
I like this one a lot! Want to build one but mine will be outdoors so I will be using PT wood.
Also, for a little added weight/stability I am considering using 2x4 for the legs. Do you think that's a good idea? We do have some high winds occasionally but I will be putting it in a protected area from the predominant winds.
Thanks for what you do!
good luck sir
i wouldn't recommend using a hammer due to how thin the wood is, and how variable the quality of the wood i've received from my local home depot. great video, i still managed to screw it up a little lol.
Very helpfull infomation.Thank you.
You are welcome and thanks for your comments!
Great video, I'm going to try this. Does it matter if I use treated or untreated wood? Thanks for the thorough video.
Thanks for sharing!
Just building one of these set ups myself. I was wondering what people use for the poop trays here in the U.K. oil pans are over $30 each here.
Thanks sir, very informative!
Great vidieo, How many quail do you put in them? Do you use them for layers? Or grow out cages?
7:25 “We’re going to go ahead and screw up the other side”
Same.
LOL, yep I can do that!
Thank you for this video. I have all my pieces cut and will be assembling soon. Mine will be outside in AZ so I will seal the wood first. I'm wondering if this will work for rabbits as well. 🤔
Great video! Thanks for sharing. Are you going to make a video on how u build the cage for the layers? Thanks

Another good video. What is the thickness of the wire for the floor
Nice job.
Thank you, this is very helpful. I'm starting my build and noticed you have a nice gravity feed water system as well as water inside the cages.
I'm wondering why both? Do you have a link to the water system for parts? Thanks again.
I had no interest in quail at all.... watched two of this guys shows about quail and now here I am with 20 quail in my backyard. True story
Thank you, I hope you enjoy your quail.
Hi Terry Great film on your cage build. In your opinion does the plastic coated 1/2 x 1/2 wire floor reduce the amount of foot problems in the birds many thanks in advance
It helps quite a bit, especially with the heavier birds (jumbos). I used to get blood in the manure trays from my larger birds with foot issues, since I've changed out the wire I haven't had anymore bleeding and the birds with bumblefoot have cleared up.
@@CoturnixCorner Thanks for that Terry Ive had the same issues will change for plastic coated many thanks again
Do you treat the wood or apply any water resistant sealant for when you pressure wash or do you just use whatever comes from HomeDepot?
