Great job and tutorial. I have made similar cages but hung them in a wood frame with a wood floor covered with plastic to scrape droppings. I really will be interested in seeing the feeder solutions you come up with. This stuff really helps people.

How neat. Thanks Terry. Will soon construct another Hutch, but from a Crab Traps Box (that holds the bait) wire. It may not have an egg rollout, for being kept outdoors, but tilted enough to roll to the front edge, opening the doors to collect them.

I use the pvc coated 1" x 1/2" pvc coated for my floors. It's more expensive, so I do not use the floor material for the back and instead use the 1" x 2" for the front, back and top (2 bends). If I'm making cages for sale that I will need to ship, I cut all the parts separately (floor, walls, top) and hog ring what I can so that it folds upon itself (flat) and fits in a flatter box (less costly shipping). I include zip ties for the buyer to complete the build, but I also sell j clips/pliers if they wish a metal clamp solution.
I would like to see a update or explanation of which trough feeder you used and how you mounted it on these specific cages I am in the process of building these exact cages for my breeders! Thank you!
i like the material you are using to make the cage. i believe your copping the store bought pvc cages. witch is a good idea, but you have to remember that they are designed it in many pieces for shipping. you better off making the sides and back of the cage one piece. install the top, bottom, and sides. then build the individual levels. starting with each bottom,(poop tray)then egg roll out bottom, then dividers. finish off with the fronts of the cage, and doors. a welded angle iron base with casters would be great if you plan on taking it out of the room for a power wash after each run.
Battery power impact driver will make your job easier.
You can get one from Harbor freight good quality and low price.

We did something similar when building our rabbit cages. After building the first dozen of the cages, I would also add some sort of ear protection and gloves to the mix to save your hearing and hands.

Use a fiberglass ('driveway plow marker") or threaded metal rod across the rollout lip of the cage to prevent bending and help support the food tray cover.

Harbor Freight has a $299 36" metal brake suitable for this material. Comes with a floor stand. They make a 30" cheapo one for sub$100 (no stand). The $300 one allows you to make feeders, poop trays and egg tray lids fairly professionally. Plus, when you're finished, you can resale it for $200-$250. Let me know... I've been looking for a used one every day... they go like "snap" that!

@Pete Wilson a "metal brake". It's a sheet metal angle bending machine (used to bend the wire cage material in perfect 90° angles), up to 36" wide material. Called a metal "brake" (think 'break' or fold line)

Just an idea you might wanna try Terry, use 1”x2“ wire on back wall and mount the cups outside the cage. Things will stay a lot cleaner.
Not sure why you didn’t use Horizontal Nipples, 100% clean water at all times.
HN and water cups screw into same hole. Try them out in 1 cage. I think you will be sold!

Would this mod work for outside? 1/2 wiire mesh all around and another top piece for the egg rollouts that could be "hinged" up to prevent anything engressing. Thanks
I am a a new quail mama. Watching several quail cages being made. I’m a repurpose mama. I have two small animal crates with the bottom trays. I am wondering if you could modify the crates by raising the floor and make a roll out egg tray, perhaps by putting a new floor in the bottom of the crate with the hard wire you are using for the floor. I might have to build a wood frame to support this repurpose floor but on a fixed budget and two crates sitting around why not!
The animal crates are small crates 18.5” L x 14” h x 12” All I might have to do is add a hardwire piece to the opposite side of the door and anchor that on so when i raise the floor on a slant I have something to hinge it to and slate it down for the egg roll out. Looks like the hardwire you are using might be the width of what I have.
The holes are 2” w x 4” - might work! Will keep you posted. I will be keeping my quails inside. The crate cost $29.99. This might cut cost even more. I think I will use PVC to build a moveable frame, keeping my PVC building like my chicken mansion 😂 like I build for my chicken coop. Wood is expensive.

If you're going to sell quail, why not offer cages & other equipment. After all, the goal is for all our "neighbors" to be "growing their own Protien"!

Dewalt makes a pre-loaded hog-ringger. Uses j-clips (wider rabbit cage clips) and hog rings for professional results

if you put the waterer outside of the cage it won't flood the poop tray if you have a leak
Having a lot of problems with bumble foot, would just using the heavier gauge 1/2x1 wire help or does it have to be coated.. currently have 1/2 x1/2 hardware cloth. Don’t need and can’t afford a 100 foot roll of the coated and can’t find smaller roll..

Just a suggestion, I've seen on some rabbit cages where people put plastic guards that snap on around the sharp metal edge's where the door's are.
I've used those (on rabbit cages); eventually they get loose and fall off, which is a nuisance.

So the frame is just at each end and then you mounted the cages to each end? If I screw another two pieces of wood that goes lengthwise on top and make a smaller square will this support a full 5 gallon bucket of water on top? Sorry for so many questions. I'm an old dog trying to learn new things.

Sorry if I missed the answer, but I'm not sure why you want to limit it to 20" deep if you have to cut off the extra wire anyway.
20 inch depth seems to be a standard for Quail cages. GQF makes theirs that depth. I have a few of them.
I know you might not have the chance to respond, but I'm hoping you do! I'm planning to follow your method for my quail setup but I'm having trouble finding 2x1 inch HWC/welded wire here in the UK. Would using 1x1 inch mesh work just as well? Are there any adjustments I should make if I go with the 1x1 inch option?

I still have not learned how to search the comments so I will have to be impolite and ask a question I expect is already answered somewhere. What gauge are the two rolls of wire? I looked over the Amazon links but the description there are for multiple gauges so I cant tell about the ones you are using in particular.
Someone that has a predator or egg stealer could make a lid for the egg roll out either out of wire or light metal like you have on the sides

This type of cage is for inside a shed / room with protection from predators .. the 1 by 2 wire is big enough for any raccoon to steal a birds life easy!
@@MrsStevenBrown yes I use all 1/2" hardware cloth.I merely was talking about covering the egg roll out. With hardware cloth or solid sheet.
Just a thought, why not just bend the top back up as a tray holder instead of cutting it.

You certainly did not ask me, but my solution is to keep my quail in 1/2" wire cage, 4' high to prevent feet nabbers, and outdoors away from me (stankie). Each day I release 80 free range chicken hens who require no additional feed thanks to the quail throwing it all out!
@@brianandlynphilippines not certain how you afford that! Mine are all outside in separate cages but in my chicken coop but they seem to get it in the manure tray I’ve tried all sorts of different feeding methods. Thanks for your input
@@gcranch9913 I don't think Doesn't Matter has manure trays so the feed just falls on the ground for the chickens.
@@smckee9063 that be true! I keep seramas, chicken chicks, and quail on wire and let them kick the feed down to the ground, I add enough 2x a day for them to be fed, but definitely do not fill for playtime/boredom. The chicken hens are fat and produce eggs thanks to this system.

Maybe I missed it, but do you have an estimate of cost for the entire 3 tier system? I know you mentioned the cost of the wire rolls, but that would be enough for 10x the amount of cages of this 3 tier, correct? Seems like what I was looking to do.
Not sure that any estimate would be accurate with inflation of materials costs lately. Quail is a step towards self sufficiency. I hope you have a good journey!
Wynola ranch makes a 2 tier system for 220 dollars with watering and feeders and trays the whole deal, seems pretty reasonable, all you do is put the legs on basically

I ordered 100' rolls, but I see it is only available in 50' now.
Correct, the 36" rolls aren't available right now (10/17/212). If you are wanting some soon, you can order online from Home Depot and they will drop ship to your house. I ordered from Amazon but didn't like the delivery time so I also ordered from Home Depot. I paid about $20 more from HD. They both ended up arriving on the same day, lol!!
I live in the country and would be worried about the occasional rat or weasel. Would you think this would be a good choice or you wooden design that has smaller mesh? Thanks

Hey I'd like to build some of these, having a hard time finding the right wire. Where are you buying it?
If I remember correctly, I ordered mine from HD online (that was the coated 1/2" x 1". Then, I bought some more wire at Tractor Supply. We were getting ready to move but I saw stuff running out and I ordered it before they were totally out. NOW, all I have to do is figure out if i got the right width or not because I got quail cage wire and rabbit cage wire, LOL! I've got to have the correct dimensions in there somewhere.
Terry I realize its been a while since this video but where did you get your wire? The coated wire seems to be harder to find.
TSC had some, but the wire I got was 24 wide. I should have looked to see if they had 36 wide. It just means more pieces and reinforcing.

Standard quail are 3.5 birds per sq. ft. Jumbo quail are 3 birds per sq. ft, per Zack at Myshire farm.
How much do you charge for a fully built cage like this?
My wire arrived today! By chance do you have the dimensions of the stand or a pdf of the project?
He said in a different vlog that the lumber was 1 x 2", with an inside dimensions of 36". Then drill 1/4" holes and use a pan head bolt 1/4 20 that is 2 1/2" long with a flat washer and nut to secure the cage to the frame, 4 sets of those bolt/washer/nut combos per cage. He said he could fit 3 cages per wooden frame. About 8 inches off the bottom of the uprights he had a rectangular 1 x 2" frame with a center support as a mess-catcher pan holder for the bottom cage. I believe the cages themselves provide frame integrity, and I don't remember seeing any cross pieces at the top. Only the two side frames.

It's an auto drip pan for when changing oil or fluids. I'm pretty sure he said that in another video I watched. Can't recall where he orders from but I think it was a pack of 10 for $98. Or something close to that.
Is it necessary to separate the cage into 2 sections for strength? Also, what gauge wire did you use? If you told, I missed it.

4 or 5 jumbo coturnix hens and one roo per cage.
Most folks keep 6 in such a cage. 6 layers or 1 rooster/5 hens (%90 fertility without over exerting the females).
Why different size hardware cloth/wire for floor? Am wondering if my current sized wire floor is too hard for my birds feet
The 1/2 x 1 coated wire is easier on their feet and is large enough to prevent manure buildup.

Hi, I checked previous questions first but did not see an answer. About how many birds do you put in each side?
Check my math?
I calculate 18" x 20" area per room for 360sq inches. (2 rooms per cage built). If jumbo quail need 25sq inches per bird that's 14.4 birds. Subtract 1.4 sq inches for feeder and water cups(+pipe) and you have enough room for 13 birds per room or 26 birds per cage built.
Why are the tops of the cages angled down? Why can’t they be flat? Wondering why the cage can’t be square.
If I had to guess its because of the slant needed for the egg roll outs to work. In their final mounting the tops seem to be fairly parallel to the ground. Close anyway.
I feel like you would waste less wire not cutting the wire off the back and bending it down and over lapping on the back. And make the front/back the same height while speeding up the process.
Where did you find you bottom trays for poop.
