Irene Moran - It's a neat caliber for sure and a great choice if your primary concerns are low recoil and defeating body armor (where high velocity and high sectional density are paramount). but it's a poor choice for a self-defense round IMO as the 5.7mm simply lacks enough weight to penetrate any more deeply than a traditional pistol caliber after the initial energy dump takes place (which is very evident in Kentucky Ballistic's pine board test of the 5.7 vs 9mm, .357 sig, and 10mm) and simply isn't going fast enough to cause hydrostatic shock sufficient for the temporary wound cavity to contribute to permanent wounding the way that a rifle caliber does, so it kind of falls into no man's land in the world of niche calibers. If you like the wild cat rounds and high velocity is your thing, buy a 10mm pistol and get a 9x25 dillon barrel for it - it's a 10mm case necked down to accept a 9mm bullet, and absolutely embaresses the 5.7 in the ballistics dept. It has about the same velocity but with a bullet that weighs over 2.5 times as much and has over 2.5 times the energy. Underwood's 90gr Xtreme Defender makes for a good comparison here as it's a solid copper round traveling at 2000 fps, but with a whopping 800 ft. lbs. of energy. Yeah, ouch! Personally, though, I'd go with a 9mm, .40S&W, or 10mm if you're primary concern is self defense as they're just far more versatile rounds and in most cases, more effective as well. :)
That TSC threshold velocity wise is in the theoretical 1700-2200 fps range, which the 5.7 rounds designed like this certainly meet. It penetrates on par with common pistol service calibers in the 12-20+ range (depending on load). How many " of penetration do you think you need?
@@BuffRANGE - My concerns with the round are not so much with its total inches of penetration, but more with its ability to maintain it's trajectory throughout its penetration range, which these little yawing bullets don't do well and can cause well-placed shots to miss vital organs as a result. Add in barriers that you may have to shoot through such as walls, car doors, automotive glass, etc., and you've got a very unpredictable round that has about the same starting energy as a 9mm but will dump it far more quickly as a result of it weighing about 1/3 - 1/4 as much. This is why the 5.56 NATO falters in similar scenarios (especially at long ranges) when compared with the 7.62 NATO, though we're also talking about a round that weighs twice as much as the 5.7 and is traveling at well over 3000 fps with a lot more energy and far more hydrostatic shock delivery (assuming the 5.7 even achieves hydrostatic shock, as Fackler's research has been inconclusive with regards to the threshold - most reports I've seen state 2500 fps minimum). Then there's the fact that these types of bullets don't always yaw reliably, sometimes putting little pin holes through the target instead of creating a large wound cavity, and as we all know (or at least should know) that knockdown power is a myth and that unless you shut down the brain with a head shot, death comes purely from blood loss, and small wounds drain less blood than big ones. A good friend of mine who served in Afghanistan told me horror stories about assailants getting hit square in the chest with a 2-3 round burst from a 5.56, falling down, and then getting right back up again to return fire for well over a minute before they bled out and collapsed. Other times, they'd go down immediately and never come back up at all - it was very unpredictable. Granted, this can happen with any caliber, but the odds of it occurring with a tiny bullet are far greater than with a larger, heavier bullet. Anyway, don't me wrong - I'm sure the 5.7 will do its job in most situations (barring the scenarios I mentioned earlier) and I certainly wouldn't want to get shot with one, but I think it's nothing more than an attempt by FN to utilize the same concepts as rifle calibers like the 5.56 without actually having the power to mimick their effects, and you know as well as I do that there are no free lunches in life and there's no cheating physics. All that said, I want you to know that I really enjoy your videos and appreciate what you do, so please don't take offense or feel that I'm insulting your purchase as I'm only stating my opinions based on my experiences and current understanding of things (which is always evolving, thankfully). Take care, buddy. 😉
No offense taken. These are always valid discussions. I think with the 5.7 we lack a lot of street evidence of it's use. Ft Hood could be argued either way, and there was one instance of a patrolmen being killed with 1 round of SS190 to the back (penetrated vest, heart, and out the front). You are right though. Typically the long for length 5.7 rounds will penetrate forward X inches, then usually will curve to the left/right/up/down 3-4" towards the end.
@@BuffRANGE - Indeed. And sometimes, no matter how effective your weapon and ammo of choice supposedly are, things just go wrong. 2022 and the 5.7 is still viewed as an over hyped .22 mag by alot of people who don't know. If you HAVE to look at it like that. It's closer to .22 hornet than .22 mag. It is however finally sinking in ad we have multiple pistols chambered for the round as well as a few pcc's. The softer copper is more malleable and absorbs more shock than a harder copper. Hardness equates to brittleness in most situations. It's exactly why we have case hardened steels and why conversions and coatings like hard chrome ,various nitrides like melanite. Titanium nitride , nickel boron or even ceramics work without immediately failing. It makes a thin, super hard layer over a comparatively spongy shock mitigating core . Balancing hard but brittle with malleable but tough . Bonded lead core/controlled expansion projectiles also work from that concept to a lesser degree.
5.7x28 is a very good pistol. If this bore is made in clash design, I say with full confidence that it will be in demand not only in the world, but in Pakistan. It is that people are buying their local and not foreign ones. Patak is very good. It should be designed in Kalashan but should be made in every assault rifle. People will also get this bore in their favorite gun. The company will also do good business.
I've seen no evidence to suggest the M&P 57 can't run any of the supersonic 5.7 rounds so far. I hope to have one day to confirm, but I think you'll be fine.
@@BuffRANGE thanks will be getting some of these rounds then I put about 70 rounds in so far & only had one hiccup with the American eagle but other then that I love it and look forward to increasing my ammo supply.
It makes sense that they wouldn't make those projectiles as hard as copper can be made. At some point of hardness, the copper slugs would just start shattering on impact.
@@squidlybytes Nope. As soon as that brass breaks apart, you've lost the majority its kinetic energy. Hunting/self-defense cartridges are supposed to make the largest temp. wound cavity possible, and you can't do that with tiny pieces of obliterated copper. This is only a good thing if simply wounding your target is your goal, and if that's the case, you've got some issues, dude. Just look at my initial comment. I was praising them for not over-hardening their projectiles. If total projectile obliteration was the goal, I wouldn't be praising them for such a thing. Use your head, man. Just look at hollow-points. If a hollow-point falls apart on contact, it wasn't a very good one. The job of the hollow-point is to expand and create a larger temporary wound cavity, not break apart and go all willy-nilly. There are hollow-points out there that are designed to "petal-off", but only psychos buy ammo like that which is designed to maim rather than kill.
Underwood manufactures an interesting .357 Sig cartridge that averages ~2100 fps. It’s weight is 65 grains. Withe same projectile in 9mm it averages ~1800 fps!

I'll give this round two thumbs up for the impressive hydro-static shock. That shock wave was massive and easily seen while in slow motion. At any rate I'll stick with my SS198 rounds. SS198 will do close to 2400fps out of a 5inch and well over 2600fps in a 16inch barrel.
@@BuffRANGE I stand corrected. I have the R57 and LC Carbine. The carbine will do 25-2600. Cool thing is the AE FMJ least expensive stuff will penetrate level IIIA out of the carbine. Thanks for the response, since we’re talking 57 and there’s a lot of chattering about the Ruger 57, do you have an opinion on the lack of a passive firing pin block and the owner’s manual warning about carrying it loaded? I entertained getting one but Jay Wolf at Elite Ammunition has some pretty scathing data points about the trigger ( he says, “and don’t even think about a trigger job because it would/could make an accidental discharge very likely”) as well as rust and finish issues . Because his company is all things 57 it’s hard not to believe him. Especially with the potential increase in his sales if the Ruger is successful. He’s certainly not helping his cause with all the negativity. Your Thoughts?
At those speeds of +2000 ft./s anybody would be a moron, to even doubt how good that round is, and the real OG knew that this round was an underdog before it became popular
It's a toss up. Out of the box commercial, the .22 TCM has the edge, but reloaders close that gap. The 5.7 shines because it can use long and light bullets, whereas the 22 TCM must use short bullets because it doesn't have case volume for a long projectile and the powder..

On paper they look to be promising. Lots of nice attributes. Best if all we don't have to listen to Jay WoLLf whine and complain that they were his design or that his Elite American Eagle rip offs were his design. But seriously I think your subscribers would like to see what the FRAGS can do. They are my primary home defense round in 5.7. I shot a full box and kept 2 for safe + 2 mags. THANKS! Keep up the good work!
I wonder if the military uses these? Making this a 50 cal that would definitely do a lot of damage
Secret service uses P90, not sure about the sidearm.
That round i need for my Ruger 57 as its Gods Rocken Roll machine..one badassed pistal round.
They are available for pre order off their site.
@@BuffRANGE Okay thank you.
I got 100 rounds of that ammo for my Ruger 57.. Sold out most of the time but with a little patience, I was able to get 4 boxes.. People are selling that ammo on gunbroker for many times the price that Vanguard charges. I'd like to get some EA T6B also but it appears that they are permanently sold out and don't take orders :( and I'm not going to pay $150 per 25 round box on Gunbroker).
Planning on doing a book test (shooting at a stack of phone books or regular books) and compare it to the penetration of my CZ52 with the Tokarev round. That will be interesting...
That's a wicked looking round, I'll bet they're expensive. Thanks for the cool video, I love the five-seven!
Fumasterchu $50 for 25 rnds
@@miltonparker8353 thats not too terrible
@@plack_benis382 now they’re $250
For 25 rounds
@@trentmclellan1037 FUCK
@@trentmclellan1037 lol, no they aren't.
You can order 100 for $170 right now.
I have about 400 of these in an ammo can.
I've never paid anything close to what you're talking about.
Vanguard is actually producing their own 5.7x28 brass now, so the already solid availability is going to be even better.
After passing that body armor it looked like it really went to work on that gel compared to bare gel testing
Probably caused the bullet to become more unstable so it was prone to yaw/tumble :D
The 57 is a game changer.
intro music that doesn't suck, nice.
Who remember the black talon rounds made by Winchester back in the 90s ?
I do :)
@@BuffRANGE I Do Too....
i'm here for the double base... good tune
Waw some dragon named equipment and consumables do live up to it's name
so unique ammo havent seen before. now I'm waiting for buffman range NGSW ammo test videos 68x51 vs armour, ballistic gel and accuracy and etc
I would love to test legit US army 6.8x51mm ammo :D
When I get my Ruger 57 I’m going to get some of this ammunition!
Bingo, that's what I want to hear. Tell your friends!
I’m watching it and didn’t even realize you had 3A in front of the block til the 4th shot that’s insane
Insane indeed :D
Well done, nice review
I too tried to get the nat off my screen! :)
WE NEED A RUN DOWN....fully automatic one
It is a damn good tumbler.
Love 5.7 best civilian round ever made
I would like to have some of the black fang ammo
It's in stock all the time on his website.
subbed for the metal in-between!
LOL how you said it, that was exactly what I was thinking when I read the name
I watch too much DragonBallZ and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure :D
Buffman - R.A.N.G.E. I just watched some Dragon Ball today, it was a good time haha
A South Paw just like myself. I like it...!
Hello! What is the most devastating round for 5.7 you have found out of the pistol?
Elite Ammo T6B, EA Dev 3.0, The Black Dragon Fang, R&R Weapon Systems R37X, SS198, SS190
@@BuffRANGE :)
@@BuffRANGE I AM SURPRISED the SS190 ranks so low.. It has a steel core. i guess that dont matter..
@@donblade5405 I don't necessarily rank them in order, just listing the ones I know work the best. SS190 only has a steel tip, and an aluminum core. If I ranked them, T6B or BDF, Dev 3.0, SS190, RR R37X, SS198 LF
@@BuffRANGE THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO RESPOND..I notice u did not put BLACK FANG 5.7 ammo on your response.. I am guessing its not as good as SS198LF -- which confused me a little cause I would think SS192 would rate better than SS198, but then again I am just throwing things out there from my youtube reseach. It appears T6B has strong copper, then would come the REAL Belgum stuff.. Dev 3.0 SS190, BlackFang 5.7 , RR R37X have to be rigth around SS192 and SS198LF. i guess we can throw in SS195LF too...LOL. Lets not forget L191 which is the same as SS190 minus the tracer.. now i am confused more..lol
Nice i love jello shots
Is there a copper jacketed tungsten round in 5.7×28mm ?????? Anyone out there know????
probably but not for public consumption.
There is, but we can only sell to federal and state agencies since it constitutes an AP round
Impressive. Been waiting to see what improved ammo would become available before getting into this caliber for a back up gun and maybe a carry gun for my girl. My primary is a 20 shot 10MM Witness Elite Match. You got my sub for this vid, because you included the 3A panel test
I know this sounds petty and I should probably do it myself but a video comparing SS198, and vanguard dragon fangs and possibly SS190 would be pretty cool
The data is there. In Terms of all out soft/armor SS190 > Black Dragon Fang > SS198. In terms of actual terminal affect on soft targets BDF > SS190 > SS198LF.
Good content even when you gave an opinion you still gave objective data and your opinions were pretty much just hypotheses based on experience that you then tested. First time watcher but I enjoy the content and format of this one.
Thanks for stopping by :D I do and try to be objective, as sometimes there are not cut and dry winners when testing ammo, unless of course the round is a complete dud. I'm not the one to push someone to a product, but if I can help give you info about it, that's why I'm here :D
Saw it mentioned somewhere that the black color is what gives the chrono the headaches and not able to get readings on both sensors. Just ordered me 4 boxes. Javalinas squadrons that want to chase me down the street again?...be advised!
These would be perfect for my AR 5.7 pistol I just completed. I gotta have these lol.
A definite like for the metal at the beginning
When you said we'd do gel shots I thought you meant something else
HHEHE :D
Do you know if these will function in the S&W considering the gas barrel system or is my concern unfounded?
I've seen no evidence to suggest the M&P 57 can't run any of the supersonic 5.7 rounds so far. I hope to have one day to confirm, but I think you'll be fine.
@@BuffRANGE thanks will be getting some of these rounds then I put about 70 rounds in so far & only had one hiccup with the American eagle but other then that I love it and look forward to increasing my ammo supply.
It makes sense that they wouldn't make those projectiles as hard as copper can be made. At some point of hardness, the copper slugs would just start shattering on impact.
Isn't that the point of these though?
That's a mouthful!
Holy crap for a second I thought it was a rifle caliber APDS bullet
Underwood manufactures an interesting .357 Sig cartridge that averages ~2100 fps. It’s weight is 65 grains. Withe same projectile in 9mm it averages ~1800 fps!
Holy shit that cavitation
What I have discovered in testing Kevlar soft armor, is that pointy copper projectiles defeat it easily.
Vanguard has what looks to be a new round coming, and available for pre-order...And guess who should get some and do some testing with it?? (besides me) .......YOU!
ha - thanks for the vid...and seriously would love if you tested their new MONUMENTAL VO - 36 GN GPM 5.7.
I will send a link in a follow comment, in case they get blocked and doesn't wipe out all this wordiness.
It's like the Black Talon's edgier son.
Clever!!!
This video has 5.7K likes...5.7...coincidence? I think not! 😂
This is one of few flavors I don’t have. Went T6B instead
Better get some.
It would be interesting to enclose that bullet in a Discarding Sabot. And load it into a 6.8 Special Purpose, or perhaps a .300 Black Out.
I need more about this ammo. please send more!
1+1 always equals two. Thank you so muuuuchh
mac catrett what?
I'll give this round two thumbs up for the impressive hydro-static shock. That shock wave was massive and easily seen while in slow motion. At any rate I'll stick with my SS198 rounds. SS198 will do close to 2400fps out of a 5inch and well over 2600fps in a 16inch barrel.
Ss198 is only a 2150-2200 fps round in the pistol. I have verified this many times :)
@@BuffRANGE I stand corrected. I have the R57 and LC Carbine. The carbine will do 25-2600. Cool thing is the AE FMJ least expensive stuff will penetrate level IIIA out of the carbine. Not sure what the overall speed is out of a 16.25inch barrel but its fast enough to get the job done. AE only gets up to 1400fps and not enough to pen any armor.
@@BuffRANGE The round will penetrate up to level III out of the pistol. That is my main concern.
@@danielwhite9205 do you mean level IIIa? And yes 198 can on certain lower end IIIa but BDF seen here vastly outperforms it against soft armor.
@@danielwhite9205 Just to confirm SS198LF will do about 2600 or thereabouts in the 16". AE TMJ will do 1600-1650 in the pistol, and about 1900 fps in the 10.4" and 2000 fps in the 16" :D
Хороший калибр!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
very nice test bro 👍
Just a heads up for the people that ordered this round it will take about two weeks for you to get it and that's with it not being on backorder
Perhaps the increase in exposure? He's a small time shop
@@BuffRANGE that's what I figured but there just wasn't any way for me to leave a feedback just giving people a heads-up
No worries. I have a good contact with him and if something arises I can get ahold of him.
I know this is old video, but you have model# (5728-90415) & LOT# (136CEB) listed at 0:10...
do you happen to know or recall where you were able to get those two #s from...website/box/receipt?

@@BuffRANGE ah haha...watched again, a bit further this time and yes, it's right on the box @ 0:27. Thanks!
My PS90 has a longer stock barrel.
I'd like to see those results.
I may revisit longer barrel testing when I have the updated version for testing.
@@BuffRANGE thanks bro, I'd like to see those chronograph results! I'm sure it'll be more than a couple of hundred than my stock FN 5.7. Thanks 👍
Wild looking bullet

I have the same shirt...thats the real awesome part of the video ;)
Would love to see what the updated round does.
Working on it. It's in the mix for this year
Buffman - R.A.N.G.E. Is the new devastator also a good defensive round. I know it really penetrates but does it yaw as good as t6b?
@@icecorebaby That's another round I want to test more now that I have samples. I believe the T6B IMO has better yaw since it's longer than the dev 3.0
Buffman - R.A.N.G.E. Thanks man I ordered another box of t6b and was gonna order a box of devastor
Buffman - R.A.N.G.E. Actually ordered a box of devastator
Love to see an accuracy test say at 50 + yds I have a PS 90 and a FN57 that I’d like to take hog hunting but I have some concerns about accuracy with these rds. Can’t seem to find any videos testing the exotic rds at even moderate ranges
I'm working on a 16" gun from Excel Arms to help test accuracy. Now that I have the CMMG Banshee as well, they can be put in a sled and I can get some #s
Cool video thanks.
No problem 👍
Would like to see this cartridge in a 20 inch Rifle bbl bolt action or semi auto rifle 20 inch bbl.
APCR pistol round, nuff said
very nice video and interesting ammo. I want ask which ammo is more powerful.22 TCM or 5.7×28.
It's a toss up. Out of the box commercial, the .22 TCM has the edge, but reloaders close that gap. The 5.7 shines because it can use long and light bullets, whereas the 22 TCM must use short bullets because it doesn't have case volume for a long projectile and the powder..
I love that you used floater music at the end of your video. Not a well-known band kind of giving away your geographical location LOL just saying. Either way great video thank you
