Imagine if there was some type of browser add-on that prevented those pesky ads from popping up.. someone should really do something like that. An "ad-blocker" if you will. Or maybe for mobile users they could create some entirely new front end application that does the same thing and call it "Vanced".

I'm 4 years late to this party, but I just bought the 5.7. One of the features of this pistol that you didn't mention was the very light recoil. Making it a much more controllable firearm than say your .357 or .45, which greatly increases accuracy for double or more taps. I was very impressed with it at the range, and so was my partner. She said that it was a much more comfortable pistol to shoot than the Ruger P-89 that she uses. This video just answered any concerns about using it for my every day carry sidearm. Thank you Paul!

    • @whiplash636

That's awesome that you got one. I'd been wanting one for years and finally caved a few months ago and picked up a Ruger 57, and I absolutely love the thing. It's so pleasant to shoot and I swear, you almost have to try to miss a target.
I handload for everything I shoot, now including 5.7x28, and I verified safety and function of 40gr V-Max projectiles up to 2,040fps out of my Ruger. Paul mentioned in this video that the ammunition he used (40gr V-Max) was pretty much loaded towards the top end of the cartridge's capability at 1700fps. He didn't know at the time, FN's actually quite a bit conservative on their factory ammo. 40gr @ 1701fps = 257ft/lbs; 40gr @ 2040 = 370ft/lbs - *substantial difference*
I ultimately settled on a powder charge which gives me an average of 1950fps, and tested it in 20% clear ballistics gel with excellent results. I have several other projectiles to try out as well and can't wait to see how they do... Hornady 35gr NTX, Berger 40gr FBV, Cutting Edge 32gr MTH, Cutting Edge 30gr Raptor, Lehigh 32gr CC Frac HPBT, and Barnes 36gr VG.
Apologies for the unsolicited info, lol. It's always fun to talk about 5.7x28.

What people don't understand about high velocity small rounds is how they work, what they are doing is using a physics principle called supercavitation when the bullet hits the target at high speed there's a vacuum bubble behind the projectile that is ripping up your insides and as the projectile slows that bubble expands until it dissipates so you get the neat little holes in the ribs, and then as it slows the wound channel enlarges. The Five Seven is designed for liquid targets like the human body where it can take full advantage of supercavitation, unfortunately most people will look at the cinderblock test and say it underperforms without taking into account that test favors rounds with more mass.

Yes, you are correct. For close personal protection after a lot of tests we opted for 40g Vmax round out of 7.5" barrel in .223. The 40g provides effective lethality on soft targets, with minimal risk of collateral damage. Hornady TAP barrier 55g for barrier issues. it didn't make sense to go with the 5.7 applications pistol/carbine due to the platforms available as well as not having the flexibility to go with heavier barrier rounds if needed.I wish Paul would have done water jug tests in slow motion. You can really see the hydrostatic cavitation of the higher velocity rounds as opposed to something like a .45acp

    • @geronimo5537
      @geronimo5537 5 років тому +27

Simply put, any 5.7 round under 1900 fps is under performing for the caliber which is capable of 2200+ fps. The best 5.7 rounds on the market market are at least 2000 fps.

One more thing I would add is that as a “specialized” round, 5.7X28 with 28gr bullet is incredibly fast, almost twice as fast as regular 9mm Luger, and that quality also is very useful in particular scenarios, like shooting at very fast moving objects at the angle. And, on top of everything, the Five Seven pistol’s uniquely designed feeding system is incredibly robust and fail proof.

I'm sure he's covered it before, but for anyone who doesn't know, the FN 5.7x28 cartridge was designed for exactly 2 guns: the five-seven and the P90, a select-fire, very light "assault rifle". The set were designed almost exclusively with military use in mind as sidearms for non combat-arms personnel. The main requirements were long range accuracy, light body armor penetration, interchangeable ammunition between the pistol an rifle, and light weight in general for personnel who would likely never be in combat.
Also, double checking the number crunching:
    5-7: 348J
    45: 433J
So yeah, the math was right despite my doing it in metric.

Well in the UK they want to ban knives now for the same reasons they want to ban guns in America. Removing a tool will only force people to use another tool in it's place. But instead of the mindset of providing legal citizens with defense options. Some government heads would prefer to provide all the defense choices to those who do commit crime, all in the name of safety. Because what to do they care they will find a way to get it. If you cannot defend yourself, you are or will be a victim. It's really that simple. Sadly governments think people should be defenseless in order to remain legal. Good thing criminals who murder, rape, and rob also follow the rules of legality...

We can’t let people be confused by the false arguments claiming that more gun control laws will make us and our children safer. How many mass shootings have there been in police stations or gun ranges? How many have there been at “gun free zones”? Their real goal is absolute control over the populations that they govern. Tyrants prefer a toothless society lest they end up on the wrong end of a firing squad. Thank God for Boris Johnson!! I will pray for England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 as I pray for our United States 🇺🇸.

I hope the Ruger 57 helps make 5.7x28 more common and less expensive. I also hope it helps bring similar ammo like 22TCM more interest. I didn't even know that caliber existed until I saw Paul's video on it but it seems like it could definitely have its uses, especially since it can share duty with 9mm in the same gun with only a barrel swap.

After LC9, PC Carbine and LCP II .22Lr this is another Ruger marketing dept. lumbersexuals' fail, IMHO.
To make it clear: I am not a Ruger hater by any meaning and I like my 10/22 Takedown a lot. Moreover, from what I see, I really like the design of R57 itself.
What I don’t get is the choice of caliber. Should Ruger make it in 7.62x25 Tokarev, I would traded all of my pistols just for a couple of those.
Just compare 1600 fps of 40-gr 5.7x28 to 1600 fps of 85-gr 7.62x25 Tokarev and you will get my point.
Too bad that Ruger failed again to deliver an innovative practical pistol, that can be appreciated by majority of US gunners, not only by wealthy hipsters or misinformed newbies who will be unsuccessfully trying to trade their "safe queens" R57 for G19 by the end of this year.
In the videos below, both official Ruger representatives say “great for home defense” while in fact it is very poor choice for home/self defense.
      ua-cam.com/video/l-Nyal0r36Q/v-deo.html&feature=emb_logo
      ua-cam.com/video/g-qoLGCbj1E/v-deo.html&feature=emb_logo
Let’s settle this once and for all, forget any and all bias reviews, advertisments, paid endorsements, and the ballistic gel tests where the 5.7 got it's butt kicked. Just look at the math. Since the .40, 10mm, 357 mag, and 45 are vastly more powerful lets just compare the 5.7 to the century old 9mm.
Here are the stats on both of their hottest loads in pistol barrels. 4" for the 9mm and I'll even give the 5.7 the advantage of it's factory 4.8" barrel. Bullets for comparison are the top of the line S4M and the Buffalo Bore 115gr. Even though the guys in the five and seven forums say they are not getting the advertised 2600 fps we will give them the full benifit of the doubt and assume the advertising is accurate despite the fact that people have recorded 2400-2500fps in their crono.
      ------------------------5.7mm S4M----------9mm 115gr
      Energy----------------405ft/lbs------------500 ft/lbs-----Advantage 9mm
      Momentum----------10lbs--------------------23lbs-------Huge Advantage 9mm
      Frontal Area-.-------.0394-------------------.1007-------Huge Advantage 9mm
      Sectional Density---.08----------------------.130--------Large Advantage 9mm
Now forget the ultra high performance hard to find ammo and lets focus on the stuff you can buy over the counter at any halfway respectable local gun shop.
      -------------------------SS195LF--------Carbon 115gr JHP
      Energy-----------------255ft/lbs---------466ft/lbs----Large Advantage 9mm
      Momentum----------- 7lbs---------------22lbs--------Huge advangage 9mm
      Frontal Area---------.0394--------------.1007--------Huge advantage 9mm
      Sectional density----.08----------------.130---------Large advantage 9mm
By every measurement we know of the 9mm is superior to the soft tissue performance of the 5.7x28, I have asked on many occasions for the 5.7 junkies to explain to me what magic energy somehow makes it more deadly and nobody can explain it to me, I wounder why. Even the most hardcore 5.7 fan should understand why I am so skeptical of it's "advantages" over conventional handgun rounds. If you do the same comparison with the 40, 10mm, 357 Sig or any other modern handgun round the comparison get REAL bad for the 5.7x28.
Once again, regarding all talks about Fort Hood shooting’s victims being killed with single 5.7x28 projectile.
      www.foxnews.com/us/soldier-who-charged-at-ft-hood-gunman-was-shot-12-times-before-dying
So many these days base their beliefs on nothing but feelings.
With all recent drive-by shootings, home invasions, etc., I value more and more the projectile's ability to penetrate at least 14" of a body tissue; or a glass, a car door, etc. - without significant loss of Ek = 1/2 mv2. So, unless it is $5 ea. of SS190 armor piercing rounds, otherwise commercial 5.7x28 ammo does not meet that criteria and even .22WMR from pistol barrel outperforms it.
      www.quotemaster.org/Ammo#&gid=1&pid=6
Therefore, without SS190, 5.7x28 is out of its element. 5.7x28 was designed to be a low-power, low-recoil round with penetration capabilities for body armor, a combination that can only work with penetrator rounds to punch those holes. Otherwise, it's mostly about novelty and perhaps wishing civilians could somehow get the good stuff and Ruger clearly exploits this.

It's phenomenal for a firearms novice that you examine effectiveness in multiple ways and especially for multiple situations and circumstances while most other firearms examiners on youtube presume a CERTAIN situation when analyzing the effectiveness of a firearm or type of ammo. I think you should start a firearms training school or the military should hire you for choosing effective firearms.

Hi Paul, another great and diligent video. I was glad you brought up "energy foot-lbs", (Kinetic Energy) as this fundamental physics term is often not mentioned but is fundamental to ballistics. KE is proportional to bullet mass X velocity squared. As such, if you double the bullet mass at the same velocity, you double the KE. If you maintain the mass and double the velocity, then you quadruple the KE. Therefore, when comparing calibers with varying bullet mass and velocities, it's important to keep track of KE. :) But the ultimate measure of course is the Paul Harrell patented Meat Target!

  • @Fudmottin

That 40gr vmax seems to be an excellent varmint round. And I can say I wouldn't want to be shot with any of them. Well, that is exactly what the VMax is, the only difference between the ones loaded in 5.7x28mm and the ones available for reloaders (or in VMax loaded .223/5.56) is the blue polymer tip, which Hornady makes exclusively for FN.

That you dismiss the VMax as being designed for varmint shooting (it's literally how hornady markets them www.hornady.com/bullets/v-max#!/ ), or the equivocation you make in bringing up the Ft. To me FN 5.7×28 is a modern take on 7.62×25 Tokarev. I don't quite see a lot of point in comparing 5.7×28 to .45 ACP but great informative presentation nevertheless :). Of course 5.7×28 is a compromise to give the shooter high capacity in a light and relatively compact package. Remember, P90 can have 50 rounds capacity and the whole package is still very concealable. I don't get this whole 1 shot stoppage concept. I'd rather have option for a lot of quick and accurate fallowing shots than to rely on one shot solving the problem.

Tomasz Zajac some would say that it is better for one shot to be effective enough, than to need to shoot again. Sometimes half a second is the only thing between a knife and your stomach. I still think an FN5.7 would work- I just might not use it as my every day carry.

This is always in my head. I wish I was a better shot, with a pistol, at defensible range, under stress, in order to always hit my target with 10+1. But frankly I'm not, so I'll happily sacrifice the 62 ft.lbs for 10 extra chances.

I would rather the 7.62×25 to be honest.

A 5.57 round is good against meat shots as its designed damage organs as it slows by supercavitation. But using it as a head shot round may less successful because of the density of bone in the skull. Any ideas?

Consider the amount of time you have to take your shots. Just because you have more rounds in the mag doesn’t mean you have more time, so when hitting once with a bullet you want this bullet to deal as much damage as possible

👍👍 would love to hear more about the common pistol calibers and how they compare to each other when used for deer hunting. 👍👍

Due to the low recoil, high capacity, flat shooting aspects of the 5.7 you can get a lot of rounds on target, easily and quickly. On the other hand the damage done is not what larger calibers would do. Is that a bad thing, yes and no. Looking at real world we see that that creep that shot up the army base in TX used a 5.7 and killed 13 and wounded over 30. He himself was shot at least four times but unfortunately survived. So here we have an interesting case. The creep, whose name I will not name, may he rot forever, was shot at least four times by what I would assume to be standard issue military ammo which would be 9mm. Creepo fired the majority of the 214 rounds fired in the incident. How many hit people I cannot find but but it half did then we are looking at about 100 rounds hitting target caused 13 deaths and 30 wounded which is 40% casualty rate. That is not much different than larger calibers. So if we look at the 5.7 from an effectiveness standpoint it seems to hold up well against other calibers and as Paul mentioned in certain niche areas is superior. Would I prefer a 5.7 over a 9 or 45? Jury is out. I'd like to have a 5.7 but I'm unconvinced that there is any advantage of it vs other hand guns and vise versa (at least when not in those niche areas).

Great video Paul, I think you made a great point with people in different walks of life choosing a CCW or home defense firearm. I think a lot people take the "what could happen" in their own life and apply that to others.
