The AAC version of Vmax is a good bit hotter (and cheaper) . Probably the best expanding round in 5.7mm is Speer Gold dot. By FAR the best armor penetrating round is Elite T6B. Good video! This is probably my favorite handgun caliber of all time.
I wonder if those are still stable at long range though, because I really enjoy taking advantage of the insane accuracy of this cartridge. But certainly gel test worthy...
@@BuckeyeBallistics I am pretty sure that Buffman has done some testing, I am not sure about long range though. I dont think he ever tests past 100 yards.
This is interesting, and seems to fly in the face of some tests I've seen. However, you've also checked your gel with the BB so that lends some credibility. Based on what I'm seeing here, why not run FMJ? It's reliably penetrating to FBI standards and tumbling. I'm not really sold on expanding ammunition in 5.7 because it seems it will tend to shed weight and underpenetrate.
@@BuckeyeBallistics $$$$$$$ once upon a time i had about 1000rds of Elite ammo of all types on hand. There was a ban panic, and I sold it all (and my FN Five Seven and PS90) for absolutely obscene prices. Literally used the money for a big chunk of the down payment on my second house.
Interesting results. Not sure what to think. Cavities in gel look seem pretty decent once they stay to tumble. But can we rely on that type of performance in a self defense scenario? I have considered this or the Ruger for my wife as a home defence option. But I just don't have confidence it is going to effectively stop a threat fast. As we get older I/She like the soft shooting properties. She doesn't like a shotgun any longer and isn't comfortable with an AR.
Yeah I'm trying to find data for real world use of this caliber in self defense from a pistol. But shot placement is key more so than bullet performance, and the low recoil and superb accuracy of these certainly aid in shot placement... not to mention the soft armor penetrating capability.
@@BuckeyeBallistics The interesting think is that she switched from a 1.0 Shield 9 to a 2.0 Shield 45 a couple years ago. And it isn't a huge difference in recoil in her mind. But a 45 HST is really attractive to her. So a 22 isn't likely to entice her at this point.
Not sure if my second response went through as I do not see it now, but I was saying what about the Ruger Security .380 then? I love it and recently reviewed.
@@BuckeyeBallistics Interestingly she switched from the 9mm Shield to the 45 Shield a few years ago and didn't notice a huge difference in recoil. I see it but it isn't as felt in her mind.
All right and Brownells has it for 20 bucks a box right now with free shipping on orders over $50. Literally just placed an order before finding this video. Starting to think maybe it's more than just Target blasting ammo. Looks like it would be good self-defense ammo as well which is something I never thought I'd hear myself say about FMJ.
Have you had any problems with the federal ammo? I have 500 rounds i bought 3 years ago and am very paranoid to use it withh all the complaints online. Thanks
@@BuckeyeBallisticsI’ll just be happy if I can figure out how companies make them completely clear. Every home made gel I’ve ever seen is yellow, including mine.
Well, prepare to be happy- the perfectly clear gel is a synthetic gel, not organic gel like we make. Probably the most popular company that makes it is "Clear Ballistics" - I have used their blocks in the past. They are much more expensive, but they do not need to be refridgerated and can be used over and over again. Only problem is, they get less and less clear each time you melt them back down. There is a huge difference between each type, and I would have to write many paragraphs here to explain all the differences. But I made a video explaining all that if you care to know. I would post the link but youtube deletes comments now with links, even my own... The title is "10% Ballistics Gel Comparison Differences Explained - Clear vs FBI"
@@BuckeyeBallisticsoh awesome, and fuck you UA-cam. Stop being pricks. I’ll definitely look that up. Thanks! Idk about more expensive though. Well, maybe with pork gelatin. I bought beef and it actually cost more than just buying a clear block lolol. Didn’t know you could melt and reuse though until like yesterday so that’s cool. That’s the only synthetic stuff I can think of that reminds me so much of gel.
The AAC VMax is actually better than the FN ammo. The AAC actually has the velocity needed to expand from pistols. The FN ammo is overpriced and doesnt deliver. I really wish Speer would make the 5.7 Gold Dots faster, they barely expand. Usually Gold Dot is the Gold Standard for defensive ammo.

Pro tip guys, the 62gr subsonics will penetrate many types of IIIA armor. That makes this caliber an incredible suppressor host.

I'm sorta with you on that analagy
Noticed the FN bluetip made a bigger jump of the jell than the Fed every shot.
Thank you for not using clear gel.
My pleasure! I hate that rubber stuff...
Now test Elite Ammunitions T6B and Devestator rounds. They’re far superior and will outperform the black tip FN SS90/190 rounds.
Thanks for the recommendation

Fiocchi 40grain black tips please

No but mine was newer production
Go with green tip & red tip plus gold dot please

5.7 Is made to tumble. Except the gold dot. It will expand
I’m just wondering when the ammo makers of 5.7 are going to make better ammo for self defenses
There is the Speer Gold Dot and Hornady just released an FTX version...
Better ? Did you see the energy dump and tumble ? Please stick with your lame 9mm
Can you do the black dragon fang from vanguard outfiters.
Added to the list

No

Not sure what they're using these days.
