Pulp papers create the loveliest cauliflower blooms and back runs. Once we know the characteristics of any art supply-paint, paper, whatever…we can use them to their fullest advantage. Thanks again for magnificent tutorials, Paul. Happy New Year from me to you 🇺🇸 🇮🇪 🎆
Paul, another great tutorial, as always. I see Jenna Rainey has placed you in her favourite artists list AGAIN. She says you are her favourite. The lady has good taste as you are my favourite as well. I have learnt so much from you over the years and just love your painting and video style. Happy 2024.
I'm so, so happy you're bringing out the positives with good quality cellulose paper here. I feel so bullied loving it for some of my works sometimes. I do not dislike cotton in the slightest, I just don't like using it for some subjects and projects.😢
I heard you mention Hahnemuhle a few times on your tutorials and I found the loose sheets at my local art store and I think it is my favourite brand ever. I have never been able to like Arches as they always cause hard edges on my paintings, except the 3 300lb sheet which is decent but I only use it occasionally . We have Cansen and Fabriano here in Canada too but I am not convinced by them. loose sheets are much cheaper than blocks. so I usually just get them.
I completely agree that cellulose paper can be better for some projects, or some painting styles. Actually, I use it more often than cotton paper, and I have 30 years experience in watercolours. I like that cellulose paper keeps colours brighter, it also reduces the amount of paint you spend. If one doesn't paint in many layers, only 1 or 2, good quality cellulose paper is fantastic. I love the paper you use, Bockingford, it's a bit expensive where I live, but totally worth it. Another great paper I like to use is Fabriano Studio 25% cotton. It's relatively cheap, and I like it's texture. The best unexpensive cotton paper if definitely Baohong.
Paul, Thank you for the great lesson. I followed you along on each brushstroke for painting the ship. I learned much from your great comments about color mixture and shadowing and texture. Thank you sir. Don Sylvester, Houston, Texas
Thank you! I am not "good enough" to afford the heavy paper so thats why my super wet paintings are a mess. Relieved theres a reason actually! Love your tutorials!
Thanks for all you do. You remind me of Matt; you bring so much joy to many people. You make me laugh, and I've been struggling with that lately in this crazy world. Thanks for the dance.
Happy and safe 2023 to all❤🎉. Thank you for the tutorial. Can't comment on thee papers as I haven't used mant brands/ types Of papers. Before online shopping, had to use local made paper and now have to use the most economical brand because oof financial reasons (except when my daughter gifts Arches/ Chitrapat sheets, God bless her).
Love the ship, and i was using arches and hahnamuele cotton, and then mistakingly purchased hahnamuele pulp and noticed a huge difference!!! Once i realized this, I learned to paint less wet and wet into pulp and used it to practice. Its perfect for botanicals
Happy new year , all the best in the world for you and your loved ones. Thank you for years of wonder and delight in the world of art, hope for many more.
It's been more than two years I'm watching Paul's tutorials,he's a great teacher and mentor to me...I've improved a lot and people like my paintings too big thanks to you Paul..may god bless you...and all out there❤
Bellísimo!!! Me inspira para pintar. Los barcos son mis favoritos y los atardeceres, con todos los colores que se ven. Mil gracias, por compartir su experiencia. Felicitaciones!!!
I purchased a pad of Baohong Meeden 100% cotton cold pressed, 140 lb on Amazon which I'm quite impressed with. Quite a bit cheaper than Arches as well. I believe it's made in China
I really appreciate you pointing out your colors religiously...some of us being partially color-blind have to find a work around, and your tutorials are really helping me with that.
I have a large amount Winsor and Newton Cotman paper bought several years ago but I have no idea what it is made from. I guess that it must be pulp? I am using it up as I practice and have managed to complete a few paintings not too shabby! I feel really inspired with this tutorial, so honest and down to Earth. Thank you once again Paul.
I echo many with thanks for this. I appreciate the touting of the qualities and characteristics of each type rather than just bashing one or the other for what it doesn't do well with. I'm looking forward to whatever treats you have in store for us this coming year and I hope it is a wonderful one for you!
Thank you for this video Paul, Happy New Year! My favourite cotton paper is the Baohong artist paper, it is more affordable then Arches and Bockingford, which are very expensive here (Hungary), and I found that the same quality.
Thank you for the demo on pulp and cotton. The effects are different but the quality is what you spend. Both paintings look great. And two different styles meaning one is structured as in following a drawing and the other is abstract and spontaneous.
Good morning Paul and Happy New Year 2024, I look forward to another year with you and Margot ! Such beautiful tutorials and explanations of the types of paper ! I appreciate the shorter paintings as I recover from this foot surgery , it’s been a challenge keeping up and I can’t wait to get started ! Blessings to you and Margot and thank you for all you do for our group !!
Happy New year Paul thank-you for all the tutorials throughout 2023 i am looking forward to another year of of your paintings i love them all not only do you have a exceptional artistic gift but you are an excellent orator and teacher and a warm friendly nature
Happy New Year! Thanks for the comments on the various papers…sometimes in depends on the subject as to what I use…favourites..Arches,Bockingford,St.Cuthberts,LanAquaelle …thank you for your excellent videos
Thank you for painting the ship. I tried this one in the Let's Go Sailing challenge and it helps a lot to see how Paul would tackle it. Plan on giving it a go again.
Paul, love the unbiased look see at the "watercolor paper" issue. Some teachers I have encountered would not even listen to me when I made the case for pulp or pulp/cotton mix papers. As always it seems to matter more what type of painting you are doing that will determines the materials best to be used. I like to at times paint with lots of special effects so pulp or pulp mix would probably work better for me. For my more formal (stuffy) works the 100% cotton will be a better match. Thank you for finally clarifying this issue for me with such wonderful examples.
Ive been using both for years having good results, i like to cut my paper in half so i get twice as much to play with. And the smaller paintings are easier to store. 😊
A happy new year! And thanks for another lovely tutorial! Just what I needed. I've recently started actually using my expensive Arches papers 😆 and experienced some of the difficulties they present, if one is not used to them. But I've also come to appreciate the advantages. I'm looking forward to further exploring the potential of different papers. Hahnemühle offer a 'Watercolour selection', which is a bundle of 14 different sheets of paper from their range. It's lying on my stash, waiting to be tried. A lot to do in 2024 ... 😀
Пол, хочу сказать большое спасибо за ваш труд, за уроки. Спасибо за вдохновение, за ваш прекрсный канал! ❤ Спасибо, что делитесь своим творчеством, секретами. У вас очень красивые картины!
I have to tell you you sent me down an elaborate and wonderful rabbit hole Paul. Watching where the hell is matt brought me to tears... and an hour and a half later I was listening to Rorogwela Lullaby sang by Afunakwa.. It was a good cry, and I feel rejuvenated. Thank you.
Paul, thanks so much for making the different papers clearer for us. I pretty much stick to Arches 100% cotton but may try pulp. Beautiful paintings. Sherry
Happy New Year, Paul! You are a joy to watch, and I never missed one of your videos. Thank you so much for all the work, talent and wonderful sense of humor that you put into every videos. I love it!!! Cheers and all the best for 2024!
Happy New Year! Two fantastic paintings and tutorials to kick off 2024. It took me a while to get used to 100% cotton paper. Love the Fabriano rough texture.
Happy New Year! Strathmore and Canson papers are the most readily available brands in my area. Arches is also sold in some stores. I'm mostly working on Strathmore 400 series and Soho Urban Artist mixed media bricks. I use the Soho brick with Derwent Inktense watercolor pencils rather than watercolor paints.
I wish I could ‘blag it’ like you do, Paul. The ship painting is lovely, but my favourite is the landscape painting. It’s absolutely glowing and stunning. I love the abstracts, especially yours. I tried cotton paper for the first time just before Christmas and I wasn’t too keen. It’s a bit difficult to sketch on, and the marks on the paper looked like tiny bricks when painted over. Maybe a fault in production. I’ll stick to the pulp paper, especially as I’m still very much a learner. Thank you for another wonderful tutorial, and Happy New Year to you and Margot. 🎉😊
Thank you for this paper information. You are ine class act Paul, and you always give me a reason to smile... something needed so much!!!! I AM from Alabama and the Arches would get me the stink eye, lolol!!!!!
Absolutely stunning work! The comparison between pulp and cotton paper in these watercolor tutorials is enlightening. Both paintings are truly marvelous, and the results are beyond words.
A very Happy New Year to you, too, Paul! Your tutorials have helped me improve over the years. It's always a pleasure watching you creating something beautiful. Thank you and all the best!
Thanks for demonstrating and explaining the pros and cons of each type of watercolor paper. It helps with understanding how to get the desired results. Hope you and Miss Margot are having a wonderful new year ahead. Cheers 🥂🎉🥳🎊 Mr Clark.
After years of using nothing but Arches, I'm finally trying out Fabriano Artistico. More out of necessity than choice. The art shop didn't have my usual 300gsm Arches in stock. As a substitute for Arches, I have to admit Fabriano is pretty good. I've noticed the paint doesn't "lift out" quite as readily. Looking at it in terms of budget, Fabriano is cheaper than Arches. (Though not by much.)
Thanks again for your very useful information, as a watercolourist for many years no one has ever told me the differences or characteristics of these papers, and I wasn’t aware of the different properties and what can be achieved with both
Happy New Year to you and Margot! This is extremely helpful. Regarding the comment left about ambiguity- I have never thought your "any decent paper will do" was confusing; you have often mentioned the texture of cold press and why you like it.
Thanks for this Paul. As a novice artist I have found that if I buy better quality paper I can get away with cheaper paint. Honestly it works. Paper is the key. Just a sheet of Arches cut into smaller pieces will give you the chance to try blending, watching bleeding techniques, lifting out colour and granulation will all happen with good paper. Thanks for the tutorials. Xx
Happy New Year, Paul! I have been following your tutorials for almost a year now (joined the Facebook group as well) and appreciate your sharing your expertise, knowledge and humor. Looking forward to another fun, informative and challenging year painting with you. Thank you🙏
Wow! I did not expect a silly dance to bring about so much emotion! Thanks to you and Margot for bringing us all together with paint and paper, whether it’s cotton or pulp. 🤍
Two great paintings, Paul!!! The second one looks better in the portrait shape - in my eyes. The most papers I use is 100% cotton, Hahnemühle, Arches, Fabriano, Centenaire from Gerstaecker, (it's a big art shop with some shops in Germany and own brands) But I also use pulp cellulose paper. I still try a lot of brands to find out what is the best for me. Thank you for sharing your works 🙂🌻❤️ Susanne
As a newly evolving painter I appreciate your supporting the options available and the Lovely examples on the different effects the different paper offers. I have a friend who teaches in the middle schools and she loves to allow the students to even use scraps of paper from various sources to show examples of how water color varies its effects on the different papers.. it’s a fun lesion and so nice not to take art so seriously. Just play and explore. Thank you Paul. Love this channel you have created
I did your seaside shack on pulp! Turned out just like yours! I run water over my paper first….I let the outside just get slightly dry. So the inside is still damp and the paint moves wonderfully and doesn’t sit on the top! So far so good!
Thank you so much for the Where the Hell is Matt video link. I’d never seen it before and I’m still smiling. My favorite cotton paper is probably Hahnemühle The Collection as I like the texture better than Arches but I use Arches a lot too. Good economy cotton papers I use are Baohong Artist’s or Baohong Academy (student grade but still good), and Leyton which is 160 lb. I’ve tried Fabriano Studio which is 20% cotton but don’t care for it. I will give Bockingford a try if I can find it in the States. Happy New Year to you and Margot and thank you for all you’ve taught us!
Many thanks for clarifying "any decent watercolour paper will do" by way of these excellent tutorials.

Baohong is better than some expensive watercolour papers
Boahung and Meeden seem to have similar branding. Are they related or even the same?
Paul,
Thank you for the great lesson. I followed you along on each brushstroke for painting the ship. I learned much from your great comments about color mixture and shadowing and texture. Thank you sir.
Don Sylvester, Houston, Texas

Really stunning paintings, too. I cannot wait to meet you and Margot and study with you!!!
I hope so too!
Canson Heritage is my favorite. I do use pulp paper to test my mixes on and I use the cheap Canson paper for that. I like Arches and Baohong also.
Great stuff - thanks for sharing!
Have a happy and healthy year, Paul!
Thanks for sharing. I love it. 🇹🇷

Hahnemühle offer a 'Watercolour selection', which is a bundle of 14 different sheets of paper from their range. It's lying on my stash, waiting to be tried. A lot to do in 2024 ... 😀
Thanks! - The Hahnemühle 'Watercolour selection' sounds a great idea.

Glad you enjoyed it….. I have the same reaction when I watch it 😁
Winsor Newton has granulation and texture mediums. You could test them out some week.
Cheers Steve ... I'll add it them to my list!
Paul, thanks so much for making the different papers clearer for us. I pretty much stick to Arches 100% cotton but may try pulp. Beautiful paintings. Sherry
Happy to help Sherry!

Happy New Year! Two fantastic paintings and tutorials to kick off 2024. It took me a while to get used to 100% cotton paper. Love the Fabriano rough texture.
Cheers Ann - yup, it's great paper!
A very Happy New Year to you Paul, looking forward to to watching all your paintings this year and learning so much from you!

I sometimes use khadi (cotton) paper.
It's good stuff!
Absolutely stunning work! The comparison between pulp and cotton paper in these watercolor tutorials is enlightening. Both paintings are truly marvelous, and the results are beyond words.

After years of using nothing but Arches, I'm finally trying out Fabriano Artistico. More out of necessity than choice. The art shop didn't have my usual 300gsm Arches in stock. I love using Baohong 100% cotton paper from China. It works super well but the rough paper is too rough. The Baohong hot press paper is fantastic.😃
Thanks for the tip!
KEN Bromley do a sample bundle with 11 different papers, most of which you mentioned. A good way to try different papers out.
Fab - thanks for sharing Shirley!
Thank you for these lovely paintings. I really like the galleon. I use Arches paper, Saunders Waterford and Hannemuhle.
Happy New Year!
Thank you! You too!
Wow! I did not expect a silly dance to bring about so much emotion! Thanks to you and Margot for bringing us all together with paint and paper, whether it’s cotton or pulp. 🤍

That's a lovely comment Janet .... and thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much Paul, for your considered comments. An invaluable exercise today ❤
As an extra, Where the Hell is Matt is a total hoot! Thankyou!!!
You're so welcome! Thanks 😊
I did your seaside shack on pulp! Turned out just like yours! I run water over my paper first….I let the outside just get slightly dry. So the inside is still damp and the paint moves wonderfully and doesn’t sit on the top! So far so good!
That is awesome! - it show it can be done!
Thanks for the info and so pleased you enjoyed Matt! ....and a Happy New Year to you to!
