MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further. - Навчання та стиль
Mike - gloves and work boots, please! You walking into that dumpster full of debris with just tennis shoes made my safety engineer heart hurt a little bit. Following your progress and looking forward to another quality build!
Yes! Also the no respirator a majority of times. If he only realizes the loads of dust of all kinds even if it’s not super “noticeable” is everywhere and extremely dangerous. Even if it is “nature” like the saw dust.
i agree on the sneakers should be banned from most construction sites - steel tips aren’t necessary but finishing nails are super sharp and puncture wounds suck
Yeah and maybe some safety glasses and respirator
Your dad removing that bedroom wall stud is was the definition of work smarter, not harder 😂. So good!
1000% 😂
Hi Mike! That tile you found looks like a vinyl glue down 8x8" . In my experience they are asbestos tile and you need to do a proper remediation as it can be real dangerous to handle. Cheers and enjoy the project!
Jeff you da boss!
We need a Jeff and Mike collab!
@@ryanharden23 thanks for letting me know, I’ll grab a test kit to check 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
@@ModernBuilds Vinyl asbestos tiles are not dangerous unless you're turning them into dust and breathing it in -- people generally just cover them up and forget about them. It can be super expensive to remove professionally. Other people just spray them down and remove them. Your state's laws will dictate what you have to do re: removal and disposal.
Yeah came here to say those small tiles likely asbestos. Also, homes of that age, may have ACM not just in the tiles, but in the mastic adhesive and joint compound. Frankly, the paint is likely LBP (lead too). You shd be wearing tyvek suit and a respirator plus goggles.
Mike, I'm onto my 60th renovation unit and I can tell you your first mistake is NOT buying your own dump trailer. It pays for itself on the first job and you have no weight or size capacity limits.
Legally speaking you still have a weight limit on any Dump trailer as well as dump fees per ton.
But how is that convenient especially if you are just starting out your first project? Storing it etc?
All that old flooring can be reused where there was not hardwood underneath.
He's throwing out some good wood.
Pallet wood can be used to make other things.
If you can decide beforehand what your exit strategy will be (flip, rent, air bnb) then you can decide to what level you can remodel it. Rentals typically call for different type of materials then flips. It's a way to save money in the long run.
Pacing and editing of the video is on point. Made everything you were doing really easy to follow.
best way to remove backsplash is to just take the drywall with it, saves a lot of time in trying to skim it or tile over it
It’s great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. Of course, I'm pleased with the outcome and this Ryan’s ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans was extremely useful to me as a guide.
love the colab with the parents, this was awesome. looking forward to the rest of this series
Couldn't be more hype to get this out to you all, this'll be a fun experience, I'm going be doing my best to vlog and bring you along more than I have before, so I hope you dig the new content!!
Mike where's your GLOVES!!!😊
I have to renovate my entire apartment in less than a month & I am absolutely dreading it. No idea how to do most of the stuff, which guys to hire, what I wanna do with the apartment when it comes to details. Watching this give me encouragement, so thank you.
Mike please keep the original hardwood! It all looks so good and having the kitchen and bathrooms in tile wpuldnt look badly at all!
Keen Pittsburg steel toe utility boots also…they handle the work damage….one misstep on a nail, or something heavy dropping on your a foot can cost a lot of time and pain…
Those vinyl tiles look like VAT, Vinyl Asbestos Tile. Be careful and I would recommend getting it tested and properly abated or incredibly cautious in the future.
Mastics and sealants and popcorn ceilings are also typically hazardous in older homes. Be smart and keep alive/healthy. That crap can really be very damaging years down the road.
This is exciting. A linen closet in the hallway is a long forgotten storage space. Linens i.e. sheets etc not just towels. But a larger closet in the master is a great idea.
This is so great!! Can’t wait for the next episode. Production quality on these videos is 💯
I love seeing this project. I’ve been renovating my house I bought a year ago. You are going through so many steps we did so it’s encouraging to see, I just have a few plumbing projects left to go then it will be done. Great video! I have enjoyed your content since the dog house days!
I'm glad your mom is having fun, I think? She's a good sport. It's great to see you all working together on this. I'm looking forward to the reno.
love seeing you apply everything you've learned along the way - super cool that y'all are teaming up on this !
Exciting! No worries I'm sure you can do all the work. I'll be waiting for all your progress!
WOW! That was a lot of work. Your parents are amazing. I love your thoughts on the tile & the kitchen counters.
very exciting to see a new project being started. can wait to come along for the ride.
MIKE!!! YOU SHOULD HAVE WORN GLOVE WHEN REMOVING THOSE TILES! Some of those old linoleum tiles can contains asbestos! PLEASE tell me you had them tested?! Just want you to be safe and not get sick or have that in the air of the new home.
Opening up the door way and bathroom was such a relief and eye opening
I never knew that it was a freakin choice 🤦
More of these long vids please
Love this renovation series where you are showing the progess in a lenghty detailed video 🙌🏿
I'm so excited for this series. I loved the Joshua Tree house series and know this will be equally as good, if not better!
Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep making. God bless.
Can’t wait to see the next video. Everything looks like it is going well.
So proud of you Mike. I'm excited to see this series. It's extremely relatable for me at the moment! Good luck. Super pro as per usual.
I am so pumped to see all these videos!!!
Good thing you are so super handy!! I hope you are keeping track of and can let us know how much this entire project ended up costing you once it's done.
Have a good one!!
Saving the old 2x4s can save you some money if you're doing any new framing. I saved every old 2x4 out of my house that I remodeled they are all mostly used up now through various projects
I really enjoy you home improvement shows very much.
Awesome video, stoked for this flip after the Joshua Tree house. Also glad to see you getting your parents involved more. Keep it up 👍🏼👍🏼
I really love that its a family project.
I have solid surface and no one talks about it ! I love it !!!!!!!! It looks like stone but isn’t a sponge!!!!!!! Loveeeee
Been waiting excitedly for this! Great to see your progress Mike
i like this kind of episode, its nice to watch the demo and fliiping homes.
4:10 You should wear a respirator when you do that, especially if the house was built before 1980.
Cant wait for part 2!
Love watching your video, you have alot of energy.
The hardwood flooring could probably be buffed/sanded to get rid of the stains and then a new finish/top coat and your all ok
So satisfying to watch!
Two personal time and work tested essential residential demo tools: Stanley Fatmax functional utility bar-virtually indestructible, and Hart 15” flat bar. Both well designed and strong tools. Inexpensive also.
Your parents are awesome man. Love it.
Loved all the progress in this video! Right on
Not sure the house would be old enough and could be very different to here in AUS - But I’d be double checking that roof space insulation isn’t Asbestos.
Absolutely love your videos, keep it up Mike ❤
You can sharpen a chisel. Take a few min with a grinder.
I prefer to use a multi tool to cut the drywall and tile out when removing kitchen backsplash it allows you to take it out in sections and for me it's quicker to replace a squared section of drywall than it is to chip away the tile then try and repair a chewed up section of drywall.
wow, congrats on the invetment! Looking forward to this series
Oh my gosh we have the exact same situation that you have at about 25/26 mins!! We even have the same chunk out of our ceiling!
This is so cool and i really can't wait to see this project finished. Makes me want a property of my own to reno!
Hey! Demo tech for a restoration company. As for your question for the backsplash there really is no fun way to remove it in a timely manner. A flat bar and hammer works but with certain tile it comes out much nicer if you chisel or grind out the grout from between. Time consuming yes, but it will save the drywall!
I’ve always heard that it’s easiest to just cut and remove the drywall with the tile still on it then just replace the drywall than it is to try and remove just the tile then repair the damage
Dude you and your Dad are serious beasts
Team up modustrial maker for your counter tops 👍👍
Awesome stuff! I really enjoyed the video, great work and looking forward to the next episode :)
Hey Mike - yay!! Love the video - I’m so excited for you guys!! Now I’ll be waiting every week for the next 5 days if orogress - this place is gonna be beautiful and if you sell it - the buyers will be lucky buyers - and they’ll get to see the quality of your work (their new house) from the inside out!! Really exciting - great job!! Really great job!!!❤
Five years??
I've faced my fair share of challenges in this business, and I appreciate how you handle them with grace and skill.
Good Job!!
You mentioned several times about wearing safty glasses. I wear bifocals and have worked in residential construction. The last time I went in for an eye exam I asked if I could get my prescription as safty glasses. It turned out that not only could I the style I chose it didn't cost any more than just getting standard glasses. Check into while you can still see.
Love your parents! ❤
amazing video!!!!!!!
That attic looks like a massive fire hazzard
Getting excited
This was a really enjoyable watch
Yooooooo Big Mike!!! Super proud of you Youngblood!!! DO NOT feel pressured to explain or name these How To videos. Just show us your journey cause the REAL ones will be here watching!! Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
Incredible ❤
Good luck!!
Great work on that reno Mike! Turned a few properties in my time and am glad that I will never have to do that again! You are young & have help from your parents & that's a good thing! IMO, rental properties are a real PITA to manage. If you can get a good price for the property after reno, I would sell it and move on. Don't ask me how I know this! Anyway, good luck going forward! 👍👍
Great video, keep it up.
Dude great choice. I'm in OKC too. Been here for years. Would love to work for you. Been watching your stuff for a long time, like really early on. Thanks for all your videos and info. You keep it real. DIY hero.
Need extra hands, I'm in.
Pro tip save as much of that old lumber as possible.itks better than the new stuff and it will save you money on materials
The title sequence with the music: Hilarious!
Love this content
On that backsplash, do yourself a favor and replace that drywall. I have tiled on a rough damaged drywall surface and will never do it again. It’s so much easier on a clean and true surface 👍
Excited to see what you do with this house! May I suggest that the linen closet open into the bathroom instead of the living room? Door might be in the way.
OMG, your tearing down the whole huis. 😮
21:05 But if you find out how to do all those things, be sure and posts videos of the whole proces, so we can still learn from you!
Awesome project, Mike, looking forward to tag along on your flipping-journey!
That looks like fun
I recommend just one type of floor for everything. Looks better in my opinion
Did your Dad fall at the end? 😂😂😂😂 love all your videos man! This is inspiring me to start on my house. I have a ton of weird closet space that is unnecessary.
Seeing how he demo and dumped those wood floors, I feel like Mike is over-flipping the house like someone who is building his own home. Such over-renovations in flipping project may hugely lower your profit or even make it a loss in reality. But as a home buyer, I wish all house flippers were like Mike!
that dumpster walk through gave me nail through the foot anxiety.
I know you're way past the kitchen tiles now, but I've seen folks cut the drywall and backsplash apart while they're still connected. You could probably use an reciprocating or oscillating saw to cut the edges into manageable chunks. That way you can remove big panels with tile attached instead of trying to remove individual tiles and then drywall.
Mike, when removing tile backsplash, save yourself a lot of time and energy. Cut it out and replace the drywall. Less mess, half the time.
Helluva time to flip a property
Great 👍
I would paint the bedrooms a darker color. It has been shown to promote better sleep.
You probably want to add some screws to the ceiling drywall around where walls were removed.
mike congratulations on your first transformation! I have a question! To do the work yourself, must we also get a permit from the city?
Demo-ing that place looks fun, however my inner reclamation wood worker is crying at the dumperster full of opportunity.
Great journey thus far though.
So how much did your dump trailer cost?
Does it hold 20 yards?
How many flats have you had on your truck and trailer going into the dump?
How much time is involved for the landfill trips that could be used doing something else?
How much is the landfill fee for each load?
There is a convenience factor in owning a dump trailer, but all things considered including storage of it when not in use, it isnt always the best choice.
This video was so much fun to watch. I had to rewind the part where your dad said “fat boys don’t belong in attics” a few times because it was funny. Thanks to mom and dad for always being awesome! ❤❤❤
What an honor and pleasure to work with Dad. I see where you have such energy from.
You better save the lumber in the dumpster btw, it’s always comes handy if you want to build stuff! 😅
I’m not sure why but my reaction to the video was “Fun!”, with full honestly.
