Ok. Great video. But i have an updated idea for your pan cubny and your cutting board. Pan cubby, you should think about switching the door from opening down to up. Easier to slid pans in and out without damaging the door itself. Cutting board, should install your trash can pull out under the cutting board for easy disposal and be able to hid your garbage at the same time. Good luck!
Induction is safer and more efficient than a normal electric top, but it only works with stainless steel and stuff similar to it. It works using magnets so the surface doesn't actually warm up, only the pan does.
Are hurricane ties okay for holding those ceiling joists up? Whenever I've seen load bearing wall demos, I've seen them cut away the joists to put the header between them where they meet, and then use joist hangars to connect them to the header
Everyone pointed this out on the last video where he showed this. Really disappointed he doesn't seem interested in doing the header correctly. Laura Kampf could admit when she did it wrong I don't see why it would be of any detriment for him to do it?
Wall ovens are great as you don't need to bend over to use them. I don't know why every place doesn't have two. Also I would have a traditional range oven because during family events like Thanksgiving and Christmas you can never have enough ovens.

Tip from a contractor: cut the hole on your caulk tube smaller and at a 45 degree angle. No need for windex or for getting it all over your hands. Cutting steps out to get the same result. Imagine having to caulk a whole house. It’ll make you want to NOT use windex and getting it all over hands and cloths.
Great video & transformation, especially on a budget! Though I don’t necessarily agree with the order you completed the projects. I feel like there would have been a much better and easier way to phase the reno.
Love it , very well done! But one thing: the colour of the kitchen cabinets is too pale and bla. Therefore the kitchen still looks kind of like a too cool and dead corner. It would help to apply a more lively warm colour: yellow or pink would make a difference. And it would add to the retro charms of the house.
I love everything, the tiny cabinet for baking sheets, the fridge is *chef's kiss*, I also really like the induction cooktop! But just one thing, you didn't explain what kind of and where you got the big light fixture. I'd really like it for our bedroom and kitchen for my 6'4" husband!
Lol @ buying an induction cooktop without knowing what it is. It needs ferrous cookware. If a magnet sticks, it'll work. No aluminum. Instead of heating the cooktop which transfers heat to the cookware, it heats the cookware itself with a strong electromagnet that rapidly changes polarity
People that cook occasional simple meals will like induction cooktops. People that like cooking hate them. They're easier to clean and are aesthetically more modern and again, clean. But I'll take gas burners anyday.

I’m doing the same thing man, just recently lost my mom about a year ago, and now I’m back in the house my brothers and I grew up in. After my moms passing my grandpa was helping me with the renovation and sadly we lost him also about 8 days ago on my moms heavenly birthday on September 22. And it’s been tough going through grief and depression, but my grandpa always told me to just keep my mind and body busy with some old school hard work and elbow grease. And I just want to say thank you for showing us DIYers and helping me continue this journey for not only me and my brothers but for my angels watching over us! 🙏🏽
Dang brother! I’m really sorry to hear all that happening! Losing a sibling is hard, remember when I lost mine and all I did was build stuff to stay distracted as much as I could. My prayers are up and seriously, good luck with the house. Make it awesome in honor of your mom!! Send me a photo or two sometime on Instagram!
I'm not religious or anything, but when I saw this post it hit home ............a lot! In January I lost my grandfather. He was 94, a WWII vet, a father of four, and one of the funniest people I've ever known. I worked for his electric company for 4 years and he taught me just about everything I know about industrial control systems. His death was expected but still hard. 2 months later, my mother died of Parkinson's disease. We were not very close because of who I remind her of but it still hurts. So now, here I am, doing word work and running our micro farm. I can just hear ET, thats what everyone in the family called him, telling me that it doesn't matter what you do as long as you stay busy and do things that are visibly productive. That way you will never think that the things you do are a waste of valuable time. He was a wise dude. I will miss them a lot.
You may want to readdress that header. It looks like you just tacked it in above the joists, which is odd, without connecting it to any load bearing member. Otherwise, loved the renovation. A lot of good inspiration and tips.
Did you watch the video where he actually puts that header in? While he was doing it i was thinking how does this help anything? Comments confirm it's improperly done and dangerous.
@@JamMastaJew I did not. Will have to go back and watch it. His response to one comment pointing it out was that it "sets on load bearing walls on either side of the wall’s new opening".
Looks great Mike! I'd be very interested in a 1 and 2 year check in on how the concrete skim coat on the countertops hold up because I am very skeptical of it's long term durability, so it would be cool to see a follow up. We did quartz counters so I was definitely not installing that! So many mistakes were made too. The project was the biggest DIY project Id ever taken on. I opted for an induction range for my stuff as well. I had pans that were rated for induction and its much fast to heat up stuff. I love that thing and it was a little bit of a spluge. 😊

I added a junction box inside the upper cabinet that the vent plugs into. The wires feed down from the ceiling so I had plenty of wire to work with, I just had things capped off until it was re-wired for safety.
Not only that but those joists still need to be supported somehow from underneath. Even if the full wall is removed, you need some kind of support posts on the side.
It’s all for clicks, don’t do any of these ideas, the countertops and floor will not hold up. Not to mention wiring up the oven and vent fan without the proper grommets and connectors. When he goes to flip this house the inspector will have a field day
Induction Stoves use magnets to excite the metal in the cookware thereby heating it, which has to have some kind of magnetic metal in them. This tech allows changing the heat to be more like cooking with gas. The "burner" area doesn't even get hot other than from the radiant heat from the cookware, and they usually have sensors that will turn off the stove after it stops detecting the cookware for a while as a safety feature.
